Another busy day, though of a lot of it spent reading 📚

There is a lot to learn about becoming a first-time homeowner. But I have a bit of time as I’m early in the journey, but it’s something I am pretty determined to do this year. It makes sense from a financial perspective, and even more so from mental and physical health perspective. I need the security of a permanent home, not one at the whims of landlord or a dilapidated, moldy building while I’m the director of an important state government agency making good money. I loved my years living in the city and spending my weekends in the wilderness, but all good things must come to an end, to be birthed into new things.

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a west-southwest breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. ☃ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. ☃️

It’s an exciting time to be me, but also so scary. 🤯 I just keep looking around at things, knowing that it might not be tomorrow that it’s the last time I have a view, but much in my life that I once new and treasured will soon be gone. Like those final days in my office in Alfred E Smith Building when there was times I would just stare into my sunlight-filled corner office, that was increasingly packed up and empty, and out of the of windows at the sweeping views of the Hudson River and Downtown Albany. Knowing it would be gone when I moved to the suburban office in Menands. 😞

Getting out of this apartment will be good for me. 🏚 My licensed mental health counselor identified this as a major problem — and action I should be taking — three years ago. Maybe I should have kept going to see him, but it became a major expense in time and cost. 👩‍⚕️ It won’t happen tomorrow, and I’ll have to deal with new landlord until things are closed, which is likely many months away as I’m at the start of the journey. The guy has made it almost impossible to pay him except through his personal Venmo (or via human bank teller at a specific bank only during Monday through Friday, 9-4 PM), of him in a swimming pool and cigar in his mouth, which he uses in exchange to buy beer for his friends at the bar. 🍻 🚬 Sounds like fun, but certainly not respect. No phone number or address, just an email in case of emergencies. One that he doesn’t reply to emails. 📴  Yeah, that kind of landlord. When I own a home, I’ll miss the weekends in the wilderness, riding back and forth to work, and all the niceties of living in the city — walk to the library and park, but getting out of city will be good for me. But having a garden, livestock, a place for bonfires in backyard, and a wood stove it will be great. 🔥 🐐 🐔

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 3am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 23 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 5th. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -07 occurred back in 1878.

Today I rode out to Voorheesville 🚲 and then went down to the library. Filled out more mortgage applications, 📞 chatted with another mortgage broker for a while on the phone. Spent a lot of time reading about personal finance, home ownership, and the process of buying a home. I’m on my third full-length e-book on this topic since Friday night. 📚 I’ve been quite the bookworm lately. Did more reading about my legal rights as a renter, and how to protect myself from the new landlord. Maybe I shouldn’t be so scared of him, but he reminds me of so many of school yard bullies of years past. But I have the law on my side, though I don’t trust this guy, so I am going to be real careful paying him, make sure I get receipts for all payments. Had red lentil soup for dinner, and white beans with leftover chilly for lunch. I’ve been exhausted from all the stress of it all. 😟 I’ve not been sleeping well. Maybe I’ll need more mental help as I go through this process. Good things are going to happen.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon with 72% illuminated. At 4 PM, the moon was in the east (89°) at an altitude of 42° from the horizon, some 240,347 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 19th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Snow ❄ Moon is on Saturday, February 24. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:21 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:50 am in the east-southeast (106°) and last for 3 minutes Sunrise is one minute and 26 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:29 am with sun in the east-southeast (112°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 13 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over last night.

Washington’s Birthday will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 31 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Northwest wind 9 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1981. 11.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.❄

Another chilly day tomorrow, 🌬 so maybe I didn’t miss out on much by choosing to stay in town. 🏕 It’s good to save money, big purchases ahead, lol. Really hoping to catch up with the landlord tomorrow and see if I can get answers to my questions I emailed him when he stops by. ✉️ Hard to say for sure, as I’m going to go grocery shopping in morning 🛒, then maybe for a hike mid-afternoon and then out to the folks house 👪 for Sunday dinner, a day late due to the holiday weekend.

In four weeks on March 17 the sun will be setting in the west (270°) at 7:06 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 34 minutes and 9 seconds later then today. In 2023 on that day, we had rain showers, cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 32 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 45 and 26 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1990.

Looking ahead, tommorow is Presidents Day 🧓, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 3 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 4 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 7 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 11 weeks, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 12 weeks, Fathers Day 👨 is in 16 weeks, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 4 months, National Nude Day 👱 is in 21 weeks, Average High 70 🎑 is in 28 weeks, September 🍎 is in 28 weeks, 7 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 7 months, Autumn 🍂 is in 31 weeks, December 🎄 is in 41 weeks, Bill of Rights Day 📜 is in 43 weeks, Bake Cookies Day 🍪 is in 10 months and Days are Getting Longer ☀️ is in 44 weeks.

Final Day of 2023

Made it to the end of year. Kind of a cloudy, gray, cool day to end out the year — certainly not the best day to be out doing outdoor activities, especially with the breeze and gray skies. Maybe it’s best that my planed camping trip didn’t work out after all.

I was originally planning to be out camping today, but when I got up to camp 🏕 the campsite was taken and everything up at Rensselaerville State Forest was a complete mosh pit, after all the rain we’ve had and above normal temperatures. I poked around the state forest for a while, thought about pitching a tent, but I would be setting up in the mud, and the other campsite — Campsite 3 was a mess because they’ve been logging off CCC Road. I think that red clay is as slick and muddy as I can remember due to it being such a mild, ice free winter. Maybe that black powder guy parked in the campsite did me a favor. I don’t think he was camping, though it seemed like he swapped off that site with another person, which makes me think maybe he had his stand up there and wanted to reserve the site. I’m not that heart broken 💔 about not camping this weekend. I might be back for Martin Luther King Day Weekend, ❄️ which believe it or not is only two weekend away this point. I’m hoping it will be cold enough at that point that I won’t be dealing with all that mud and slop. Some snow would be nice, and most of the big hunting seasons are done 🔫 though trapping is open and as small game.

Back to the table format on the weather, as my blog’s weather template always seems to break for the last day of the year. 🌆 There is a one-day-a-year bug which I should fix but it happens only once in 365 days. I didn’t blog yesterday, at least with a status update as I got a bit of a late start, and was planning to do it up by camp which didn’t happen. Instead, I came home, unpacked my gear 🎒 which didn’t take long as nothing was disorganized or dirty, made some lunch and spent the balance of the day reading and studying my machine learning course. 🤖 This morning I finished up the Udemy Neural Nwtworks for R course and started one on Support Vector Classification for R. 💭 I’ve been thinking I should also do some machine learning courses on Python so I get a full knowledge and various platforms. 👩‍💻 I’m not opposed to Python though I tend to use R more then Python.

Today for exercise 🚲 I think I’m going to ride out to Voorheesville 🚂 and maybe stop at Hannaford out there to get some baker’s vanilla which I like in my coffee and warm milk at the end of day, plus also some more apple cider vinger which I like in my glass of warm milk at the end of day.. That said, I’m still cringing after spending $200 at the grocery store on Friday, though fortunately I got paid early — I couldn’t believe I got my first 2024 pay check on Friday, when the official pay day is next Wednesday, January 3rd. Paychecks have been coming earlier and earlier, often on Monday mornings, and I know New Years Day or Monday is a holiday, but I just assumed the money would come in on Tuesday. 💵 It’s good though as I paid rent on Friday, 🏘 and I’ve been concerned about having the minimum in bank account.

I guess this sort of makes December, rather then January a three paycheck month, but as long as I keep things coming in and out consistently, I’m good. I just ended up buying a lot groceries, in part for camping but also there was a lot of things I wanted to keep my pantry stocked. That said, it should cut back on what I need in future weeks, as most of the more expensive things I stocked up are the kind of things that should last for a while. I don’t waste food, if things start to go bad, I cut off the bad parts and eat that first. 🍎 But I generally prefer frozen and vegatables, and aren’t afraid to use my freezer.

My parents have continued to be sick on and off 😣 so I’ve not been able to visit them in the few weeks 👪 and I’m not totally sure if we are going to do a get together for New Years Day, 🎆 though we’ve been talking about doing a holiday celebration 🎄 getting together next week for Mom’s birthday with my sister, niece and in-laws, assuming everybody is feeling better by then and the weather is good.

As you will note below, going to be a mild week to start out January, and we are definitely starting to pick up more daylight at end of each day.

A day to remind us of October days gone by ☀

Making a run at sixty degrees this afternoon but don’t worry the sun will be setting in the four o’clock hour so no bike ride home.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Sunny and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. 🌡️

Kind of a cold start to the morning, ❄️ for my morning walk. I was up at 5 AM to start the pea soup 🥘 but went back to bed until around 6 AM when I went out for my walk. Oatmeal pancakes, this time experimenting with an egg in the batter, some cider vinegar and baking soda to see if I can make them more fluffy. 🥞 Honestly, they were somewhat better. I should play with whole-wheat flour and a more conventional pancake recipe, though I don’t like the idea of adding sugar or oil to the mix. Plenty of sugar from the blueberries 🫐 I used in the mix.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 57 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 28th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2006. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

Riding to work today, 🚲 should be a nice one for that. If not so dark in the evening, it would be excellent for a bike ride home too. Going to be certainly mild enough, I’ll take October weather in mid-November. I’m hoping for a pretty mild winter, ⛄ being an El Nino year. So far no snow or even salt on the roads, as we’ve not had any icing or snow this year as it’s been mild and relatively dry. Probably the best chance for them calling out the salters in the mountains is that Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but even I’m skeptical about that. They’ve had them out a lot more in the highlands of West Virginia this year.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 28.7° from the due south horizon (-42.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:51 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (238°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (245°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:34 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 5:02 pm, which is 53 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the south-southwest (211°) at an altitude of 12° from the horizon, 231,427 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:38 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 53 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over today.

Dinner last night was 15-bean soup 🥘 but as I didn’t have enough soup, I cut up some spinach, celery, carrots, onions and added some smoked paprika to make it a meal, dipped in with lots homemade bread, this way the loaf without the shredded carrots. 🥕 As much as I like my bread with the carrots 🍞 I find it really tough on my stomach and guts, so I might end up cutting that out for just whole-wheat bread with some oatmeal put in the mix. Or just only whole-wheat flour, if I want things to be fluffier. Dessert was Greek yogurt with too much canned 100% pumpkin and some pumpkin pie spice. Tasted good but I probably eat too much. I keep telling myself I need to get pie pumpkins 🎃 and make my own pumpkin up at home. It would save the can ♻️ that I otherwise have to save for recycling. Rather compost then recycle, then tin cans usually still have a good market.

Last night I returned my library books 📚 to the library. I had a stack of books I haven’t read but I keep putting off returning them. I am spending my free time with the Udemy classes on Remote Sensing, so it’s not that I’m not learning, but it’s not with books. Most of the library books I get out are pretty out of date, and I am lazy and I just like watching video lectures, especially now that I get Udemy through my library for free. 📱 There are so many great online resources I’m learning I can access with my library card, physical books aren’t the only way to keep up with the world. 🌎 Plus I like being able to snuggle under my heated blanket with the phone, rather then a book. That said, I’m usually dog tired by 8 or 8:30 PM as I get up at 5 AM each day, to start cooking. 👩‍🍳

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 34 degrees at 1am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1972.

Looking forward to that pea soup when I get home 🍵 re-heated up with lots of good homemade bread and some balsamic vinegar. Just writing that makes me hungry. Not a real cool evening but it’s not exactly warm and with the sun set so early, it should be plenty cool by later in the evening.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, a chance of showers before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 45. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.

Turkey fans and turkey farmers will note that next Thursday is Thanksgiving 🦃 when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. So early! On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.

 Escarpment

Fifty days remain in 2023 🗓

Day by day. The fact that Thanksgiving Day Week is basically the week after next week shows how fast the year is coming to a close. While maybe it would have been nice to get out of town this weekend, I’m thinking today I’ll ride to Peebles Island and have some fun closer to home while trying to hold the line on expenses, though I’ll probably end up taking the 18 bus back home and will probably need to get to the grocery store and or Walmart this evening as I’m eating myself out of house and home again.

Good morning! Partly clear 🌅 and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY on this Veteran’s Day. 🏵 There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. ☃️ Not so cold for a mid-November morning, though it won’t warm up that much and it will be breezy.

Up a bit before six o’clock ⏰ though I was awake before then. Decided to do oatmeal-banana pancakes with chia seeds today, 🥞 topped with shredded apples 🍎 mixed with boiled apple cider, cinnamon, ginger and heated in the microwave. It was good. I have to admit I also had a bit more of that soup I made up last night — chicken soup I guess — 🍲 though it was more of a stew with rich earthy overtones with lots of cumin and ground chili spice. Also finally getting around to cooking some chickpeas, 👩‍🍳 might make hummus or just have them with various meals. Mom was suggesting putting them in soups. I also like them with fresh fruit, kind of like a trail mix without as much as fat as nuts, though they can certainly be good mixed in a handful of almonds, blueberries, and raspberries. 🥜

Today is Veterans Day, which will will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2002. 3.0 inches of snow fell back in 1906.❄

I am thinking about riding out to Peebles Island State Park in Cohoes. 🚲 It’s about 17 miles or an hour and a half ride each way. I am thinking I would likely ride up to the park, bring a lunch, walk around Peebles Island and maybe a little bit in Cohoes along the Canal. 📷 Going to be a nice sunny day with blue skies for pictures. Then ride back to Albany via the Empire Trail, and catch the 18 bus back home. 🚌 as I expect by then I’ll probably be running low on daylight and pretty tired as it’s a big trip. 🌆 Days are so short come mid-November. I am thinking my next out of town adventure will be in a little under two weeks — the day after Thanksgiving through the following Monday, probably Route 8 on East Branch. Some quiet time off the internet.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:40 am with sun having an altitude of 30° from the due south horizon (-40.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (247°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:42 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 16 seconds over today.

Money is just kind of tight 💳 after vacation and renewing my blog contract and all the trips I’ve been taking. ⛽ I ended up transferring in $750 from savings to ensure I had enough money to pay my credit card bill and maintain adequate balance in my bank account through the money. It’s not a pay week but come Wednesday, $1,300 goes out to the credit card. Already earned $135 from blog advertising, though I won’t get paid until mid-December under the Google Ad Sense rules that require a $100 minimum unpaid balance at end of the month to get paid, and then they hold your check for three weeks to verify it and collect interest on it. 🏨 I know, it’s kind of obnoxious but I’ll probably earn at least another $30 or $40 bucks before the month is done to tack on the $135. Web advertising is a bit of a mystery, based on bidding — one day I earned like $11 in ad revenue which is crazy compared to a buck or two most days and when you multiply it out over the months, especially for a small little blog like this. It’s good I’m staying home this weekend.

Truth is I have a lot of money coming in, 🔀 but the thing is as soon as it comes in a lot goes out. I am continuing to invest heavily into my retirement accounts 👴 as now is the time to do it while I’m relatively young and making good money, 💵 and also into my investment accounts so they can continue to grow and own my own land eventually. While interest rates are up on my savings account — close to 5%, with inflation I figure it’s better to be going into the stock and bond market, especially over the long term. There will be a recession 📉 but eventually we’ll come out of it and things will grow. I am hopeful I can pay back my savings account in the next few months, especially as some of those short term expenses like vacation come and go, though soon I’ll have heating bills, though so far I’ve avoided using the heat, though yesterday ♨️ I finally put the screens in my window and patched the air leaks around the door, 🪟 as I know I’ll need the heat before long. I have the heated blanket ready to go but I haven’t put that on the bed yet, though I will be ready when those days come.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1976.

Yesterday, I rode out to Voorheesville 🚲 and spent a lot of time reading and watching video and reading material for yet another Udemy class that I get free from the library. 📱 Last week I finished a class called the Fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis, now I am a few hours into a class on Remote Sensing and QGIS. Basically it’s all about using data collected from satellites 📡 to learn about what is happening on the earth’s surface. 📚 I was going to go down to the library last night but I was tired and comfortable in my bed, after enjoying that soup that I made earlier int he day. 🛌 I figure this is the time of year to learn more, and Remote Sensing is only going to improve my GIS skills, especially combined with the use of raster math both in QGIS and R programming language.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone 🦌 when the sun will be setting at 4:32 pm with dusk at 5:01 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 43 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 48 degrees. Opened this morning in Vermont. We hit a record high of 71 back in 1928.

Old Railbed Follows the Creek

Fifties at night, seventies in the day 🍂

Its been amazing weather even though most of the leaves are done in the High Country but also quite quiet without the crowds. And it doesn’t get dark until around seven here but the mornings are quite dark too. But I’m enjoying it.

Good morning! No idea on the day lol, I’m on vacation. Those camel 🐫 milkmen with their fast letdown can do their thing without me commenting. 😂 Partly cloudy and 56 degrees in Canaan Heights, WV. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. No need for the propane heater either this morning or even last night.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 5pm. South wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.❄

Going to be another absolutely beautiful day in West Virginia today. ☀ Riding my bike about 7 miles along the Canaan Loop Road today to the Table Rock trail, 🚲 which is a mile further to a scenic rock ledge high above the Red Run and across from Mozart Mountain with the Otter Creek wilderness in the distance. Photos 📸 at some point but probably not today, see the next paragraph lol. I could drive the road but it’s narrow and steep and probably rough – and I figure I would likely see far more on the bicycle where I can stop 🛑 wherever without worries of leaving my truck parked on a blind curve. Alternating driving and bicycling slash hiking from camp every other day. 🚶

I wouldn’t mind getting back to camp ⛺ fairly early mid afternoon and laying back in the hammock and reading 📖 for a while. Just some quiet 🤫 time in the wilderness. There is so little traffic on the road and I need some down time on my vacation. Then maybe around dusk, 🌆 like after dinner, I’ll ride up to the top of Canaan Heights and watch the sun set as I ride back to camp.

I haven’t done so good uploading photos 📸 to the blog this week as often my cell service is weak and it requires a better signal 📶 then on Facebook. I have posted a lot more on Facebook and will post more when I get back home. Same thing with blog updates. I’ve been busy and cell service is so patchy. I was surprised that even in the village of Davis I have only one or two bars off service and it’s not reliable for uploads. 👆

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 35.4° from the due south horizon (-35.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:50 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (248°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (254°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 6:57 pm, which is one minute and 27 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Full 🌝 Moon in the east-southeast (115°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 227,069 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 7:01 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over today.

Yesterday rode all around Blackwater State Park, the Blackwater River single track from WV 32 to the park, looped back through the village and did the part of Camp 70 Road not in the Little Canaan WMA. 🚲 While Camp 70 Road is closed to bikes for the season, due to hunting season. Lots of great views l my other camera. Colors are faded but the views from the park 🏞 and Lindy Point was great. 📸 Sat down at the river front park, and then got a few supplies and head back to camp ⛺.

The only grocery shopping options within 35 miles of Davis is Shop and Save Express and Dollar General 🏪 – that is roads with many hairpin turns, no matter which direction you go – Keyser WV, Oakland MD and Elkins WV are the nearest towns with a full size supermarket each about equidistant from Davis. Surprisingly though Shop and Save Express may be small by modern standards 🛒 (1/3rd size of the Greenville Tops) but it’s clean, modern, decent selection with lots of produce and reasonable prices. In general, groceries are a fair bit cheaper in West Virginia then the same in New York. Certainly much better than what you would find in the Adirondacks. 🐮 Got the milk, ice, paper towels and coffee ☕ I needed so so I wouldn’t run out before the trip is done.

Last night was a beautiful moon lit evening. 🌃 Rode about 7 miles round trip on gravel then back another 1/2 miles on the Allegheny Trail to one of the sods, 🚲 turned off the light and looked at the stars for a while. ✨ It was a great evening, stayed up to half past ten 🔟 which is super late for me but the mornings are super dark in West Virginia.

When I got back I fried up pumpkin – oatmeal biscuits with lots of pumpkin spice and ginger 🎃 which was a nice treat to end the day. 🍪 Laid back for a while in the hammock before retiring to sleep for the night.

Tonight will be mostly clesr 🌥, with a low of 46 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1952.

In 1962, in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Adlai Stevenson shows photos at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council proving that Soviet missiles are installed in Cuba. 🚀 Sounds like scary times.

I tell you all day yesterday with all that garlic and onion rice 💩 I was blowing up bathrooms left and right. I kind of overdid the spices on that one but it tasted so good when I was tired and hungry 😋 last night after drinking 🍻 a beer. Oh well I’m on vacation. I sought out porta potties rather than inside toilets 🚻 for just that reason. It was fine and now I’m over it.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, rain showers in the morning then becoming sunnier sunny, with a high near 69. Maximum dew point of 62 at 11am. Sunday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 60%. But by then I’ll be back in Penna on my way back home. Typical average high for the weekend is 57 degrees.

I am thinking Asaph Run campground on Saturday night ⛺ and then riding as much of the Pine Creek Rail Trail 🚵 I can before I have to leave, probably by around two. Which will become three. 3⃣ But the thing is I will be tired 😴 by then and with the early sunset and deer 🦌 in rut I don’t want to drive too much in the pitch black. I have clothes set out for work on Monday so I should be good on that front. Of course it depends on how wet Sunday turns out to be. ☔ I’m fine with driving in the rain but biking in the rain is less fun. Plus driving in the rain 🛻 after dark is something I would like to avoid.

Looking ahead, next Wednesday is Average High is 55 🍂 when the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. Not many more days of riding the bike 🚲 home from work. 🏢 On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny skies, and quite warm, with mist in the morning and temperatures between 69 and 54 degrees. Albany hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

Heldebergs

A cool gray June day… 🌥

The air certainly has the smell of rain, grass, multi flora rose and farm but not much rain has fallen at all. I probably could have headed out of town and it would have been decent with more sun this afternoon. I guess save it for a future weekend. I’m hoping for more rain during the work week, we could use it.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Clouds ☁️ 62 degrees this morning in Delmar. Definitely a change from yesterday. There is a northeast breeze at 13 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 59 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm.

Out walking 🚶 this morning closer to eight am. Banana 🍌 oatmeal pancakes this morning. I was up at six o’clock but decided to do breakfast first. Feeling a little tired and nauseous this morning, I think it’s the weather. I do think I should have gotten out of town but I told John Wolcott I would visit him today so I’m committed to staying in town this weekend. I started a pot of brown rice and lentils on stove for the coming week week, turned it off before the walk. 🍲 No to taking the Nature Bus 🚍 this week to Thacher Park. It’s kind of silly, I could drive my big jacked up truck there any week and spend the day. I have a state parks pass for unlimited use. Mom and Dad get it for me every year.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 1pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. Northeast wind 13 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1925.

I told myself that I was going to look at used bicycles this morning 🚲 but I don’t know. I just need to figure out how to repair the bicycle I have. I’m so enthralled by the throwaway culture we live in. The bicycle I have is fine, I just need to figure out the spokes for the wheel. I have the parts. And maybe I don’t want a bicycle after all. 🤷‍♂️ Walking is fine. I can’t get to the Albany Bicycle Rescue to a week from Tuesday but it’s fine I think they are closed next week. After talking with them I can get a better idea if it’s worth me rebuilding on my own 🛠 with some guidance or donate the old bicycle parts and get something used. I really don’t want to spend $800 on a new bicycle only to have it break down or be stolen. 🪚

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.7° from the due south horizon (-1.1° vs. 6/21). After going to see John this afternoon I plan to hike in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve 🦋 to see how many Karner Blue butterflies I can see and maybe get some lupine pictures before it’s gone for the season. I was thinking last night looking at the lilies at the town park it might be too late for seeing many lilies on Lily Lake in the Adirondacks even if I visit on Juneteenth Weekend. 🌺 Maybe some year. Next weekend I promised dad I would go with him to the Gas Up Antique Tractor 🚜 Festival.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 48 degrees at 4am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 16th. Northeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1947.

Yesterday had a work lunch at Juniors in North Greenbush. 🍚 It was nice though the food was so unhealthy. I ordered a gyro bowl, the healthiest thing on the menu with brown rice, quiona, black olives and tomatoes 🍅 and when it came, it was an enormous portion, biggest bowl I’ve ever seen, and was loaded with carbs and not many vegetables. And of course being my unmindful self I eat it down. But I didn’t order beer 🍻 and went very light on the shared nachos. But I tell you it’s hard to even eat somewhat healthy when out with folks. Much rather cook at home when I have control over the ingredients. 🧑‍🍳

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Latest Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.
