This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.
My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.
Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.
Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.
Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.
The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.
Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.
Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.
Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.
My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.
My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.
The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.
The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.
I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Three weeks to Buy Nothing Day ποΈ. Mostly sunny and 25 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. π. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. π‘οΈ
Walked down to the Park and Ride π, it’s a nice day but it certainly feels more like a winter day then early November. The high in Delmar is going to only be in the mid 30s which is more common in December or January than November. The mountains and hills aren’t expected to break the freezing mark although the sun and the breeze should melt away most of the snow. β Bus driver gave me a ride part of the way down to the Park and Ride which is nice on this cold morning although I still enjoy my walk. πΆ Windy though downtown. π¬
So the heat is on in my apartment β¨ which definitely felt good this morning. Warm enough that the gas heat kept up easily and it was comfortable getting up in the morning – doesn’t take much heat to keep me warm. I was kind of hoping I could wait until November 13th after the meter was read toΒ turn on the heat, but no luck there.Β πΈ Cash flow isn’t great right now, after vacation and my truck repair in October but so be it. The shower πΏ isn’t leaking which is good too after today’s bath π. Feel clean and ready for a good day at work, that bright π sun is nice although once I’m in my basement office I won’t have much natural light to enjoy.
Today will be mostly sunny π, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 14th. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1975. 1.7 inches of snow fell back in 1894.β
The sun will set at 4:40 pm with dusk around 5:10 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds earlier than yesterday. π At sunset, look for partly clear skies π and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 24 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly clear π, with a low of 20 degrees at 4am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 18th. Maximum wind chill around 22 at 3am; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 11 occurred back in 1971.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny π, with a high of 39 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 6th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1975. Ten inches of snow fell back in 1900.β
Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of snow before 10am, then a slight chance of rain between 10am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, β with a high near 45. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.
Giving it some thought I think I’ll probably head out to Brookfield this weekend βΊ, and then Sunday drive out to Cazenovia. I was going to camp at Stoney Pond – and I might still if the weather is decent but I’m a bit concerned about the possibility of Lake Effect snow β leaving a few inches of snow unexpectedly and it’s an uphill drive out of there and I don’t want to risk it. It looks fairly white out there from the Hamilton and Cazenovia Webcams I’ve checked, although the snow fall reports are quite modest — and it’s expected to be in the mid-30s by afternoon.
Upper I Brown Road is plowed daily for fire department purposes in Brookfield and while it’s modestly steep its down hill and it should be warm enough that it won’t be icy. I really would prefer to camp at Stoney Pond – maybe I’ll play it by ear, camp there Saturday and Sunday do Brookfield which is sort of on the way back home π‘. I have fond memories of my time in Nelson and I want to hunt out that way, visit Nelson Swamp and Chittenango State Park. I’ll see how much snow is around heading along the Cherry Valley π bypass.
Not sure if I’m going to John Wolcott house tonight. π I am kind of tired and I want to get packed for my weekend adventure. π Honestly, this project is kind of getting rapped up, and I want to put a close on it sooner then later. He says he has more boxes, but I think there are others who could help him out. We’ve done six boxes over the year. π
Next week is my first paycheck at my new job. ItΒ will be a little larger then the my previous one, because I’m only doing 15% for retirement versus 20% due to the 401k limit being lower then deferred comp. But I’ll put the remaining money away into more mid-term investments like when I want to buy land and a home. π° I was reading that 15% should be enough to save for retirement, but I’d rather save more,Β just because I hate paying so much in New York State taxes. I literally pay more each month in taxes then I do on rent. Granted, I don’t have the nicest apartment in all of New York.
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Buy Nothing Day ποΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:55 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 56 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 2005.
"Susan Allen and I decided to travel the route to Whitehouse after witnessing the New York State Department of Environmental Conservationβs presentation to the Adirondack Park Agency of a management plan for the so-called βSilver Bay Wildernessβ in 2005. The environmental agency proposed to eliminate the well-maintained town highway leading to Whitehouse, a ghost town in Wells that is situated at the end of West River Road on the beautiful West Branch of the Sacandaga River in Hamilton County. A popular camping and picnicking spot for visiting campers and hunters, as well as local people, Whitehouse is today distinguished by two old stone chimneys and two suspension footbridges. One of the bridges is a substantial two-span suspension crossing over the West Branch. Under the plan, a historic town cemetery with several gravestones dating from the nineteenth century would be made inaccessible."
"In addition to closing 0.7 miles of the town road, DEC has proposed to eliminate many of the pleasant, spacious camping spots dating from its precursor agency, known as the New York State Conservation Department, at least forty years ago, before the Adirondack Park Agency was created in 1973. The most spacious camping area is even older. The Town of Wells relies heavily on the summer and fall visits by tourists, campers, and hunters to the area. The camping opportunities on the State-owned land along the West River Road to historic Whitehouse and at that historical site are an important factor in the townβs economy."
"By cutting off vehicle access to the campsites, the historic site of Whitehouse, and the cemetery, the DEC would effectively foreclose the use of the camping areas as they have been enjoyed by generations of campers and hunters. In addition, DEC would be promoting the destruction of local cultural heritage and violating the New York State cemetery law by preventing the maintenance of an access road required by law. Finally, DEC would be destroying local historic vernacular architecture and civil engineering works by carrying out its plan to allow the bridges and chimneys to fall to ruin or deliberately demolishing them. These effects of DECβs gradual, but radical, reworking of its policies within the Adirondack Forest Preserve are typical of the extremist viewpoint that holds sway in the agency."
