Tonight will have a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low of 47 degrees at 4am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2016, it got down to 39 degrees with rain and mostly cloudy skies. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

Waning Gibbous Moon tonight with 73% illuminated. You should see it around morning once the clouds push off. The Last Quarter Moon is on Friday night with partly cloudy expected. The Full β€œStrawberry” Moon is on Friday, June 9th. The sun will rise at 5:33 am with the first light at 5:00 am, which is one minute and 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 21 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 62 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees below normal. Breezy, with a northwest wind 18 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had rain, mostly cloudy skies and a high of 52 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

Going to warm up and be sunny by mid week. Maybe hit 90. I’ll see what the impact of the landlord cutting all of the various trees in the yard will be, although honestly I think that by the time I get home most nights the sun will be below the tree line. Not going to be really humid this week although possibly some more muggy air could push in on Thursday. Have to watch it.

Next weekend looks like it might be perfect weather-wise. Next Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 46 at 6pm. Next Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 70. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees. Too bad that’s the weekend I have to work. More than a little annoyed but work is important as pays for ammunition, beer, gasoline, jacked up trucks and guns. But maybe it will be a pattern lasting for most of the summer. I’m hoping for some really nice summer weekends.

In four weeks on June 11 the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm, which is 22 minutes and 56 seconds later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had thunderstorm, thunderstorm rain, rain, fog, shallow fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 68 and 45 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 55 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

As you can see who follow me on Facebook, I’m reconnected between the blog and the Facebook site. I hate messing with the Facebook API which always seems to be changing and breaking things unnecessarily. Still image previews are broken, I got to research that further.

I’ve been researching adding preview images for graphics and Google Maps that I make but that requires a screenshot be rendered and that is a bit more difficult than might appear at first glance. That said it’s in my long term list of coding projects.

More charts and maps of school funding data coming up this week for you to play with as our local school district votes come up. It’s important to participate in our democratic process so get out and vote on Tuesday.

March 19, 2017 Night

Good evening! I thought it was a good final day of winter, going on the Pine Bush Hike that we ended up doing at Thacher Park. Beautiful day for skiing for sure. Now, clear and 30 degrees in Delmar. February 26, 2017 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a east breeze at 6 mph.

Saturday this weekend was so beautiful in the morning. I really had wish I had planned to go to Hannacroix Preserve or maybe some place more distant on Saturday. But I got my taxes done. So that was a good thing. It was nice hiking at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for a few hours on Saturday, but it’s really not my favorite place to go as it’s much too suburban for my taste. Albany Pine Bush hike I led today was pretty successful, as a few of the regulars showed up, despite the cold windy weather. My expectations were low as soon as I stepped outside this morning. But it turned out good. Out walking it wasn’t so bad as the calories you burned made up for the cold. I got my shopping done, so I have food for the week and don’t have to go anywhere except maybe the car wash.

There pretty good thunderstorms last evening, although it was mostly heavy rain and sleet with a few clips of thunder and some brief wind. During the half hour between when the front went through and when it was over, the temperature had to drop 20 degrees. So much colder this evening.I had to turn the heat back on at home and close, lock, and put storm windows back in.

Fixed a bunch of bugs on my blog last night. And made some new bugs. Most of those bugs are minor  but they should reduce the number of messed up charts, posts scheduled for the wrong time, and glitches setting up picture locations.  Also added some user adjustable charts and the code implementing a new weather chart. Of course in the process of the fix, I managed to create new bugs including a nasty one that accidentally revealed all my recently saved drafts posts to Facebook.

It was a pretty good weekend until I things started to go terribly wrong on Sunday evening. First off, I decided to get my truck washed – putting it off until the rain could wash the salt off the pavement – and by then the car wash by closed for repair. Damn kids with their muddy trucks. I might go back tomorrow after work. I pushed forward several minor blog fixes but that all went terribly wrong when a single line of code went wrong. All kinds of draft content posted, clogging up people’s Facebook feed, getting at least one person angry at me because I said something in a draft that wasn’t exactly the most artful of words. People get over their egos.  And it’s deleted now. Drafts are meant to be private, used to work out ideas. I got to be more careful what I put in drafts, should they ever go public again. On top of that, I’m concerned I’m getting an ear infection in my left ear, which feels kind of like there is fluid in it. And I broke my headphones. I bought a new set – another $7 set of ear buds at Walmart. But if I get a full blown ear infection, I don’t think I’ll be wearing them anytime soon. I’m hoping it will be fine by morning, if not ill give it some time then it’s off to the doctor. I hate using antibiotics but I don’t want to lose my hearing like so many older people I know.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 25 degrees at 11pm. Five degrees above normal. East wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. In 2016, it got down to 17 degrees with periods of snow. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1940.

Waxing Crescent Moon tonight with 5% illuminated. The First Quarter Moon is next Sunday with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œWorm” Moon is in 2 weeks. The sun will rise at 6:33 am with the first light at 6:05 am, which is 1 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then yesterday. Tonight will have 12 hours and 49 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 52 degrees at 3pm. 16 degrees above normal. Breezy, with a south wind 9 to 14 mph becoming west 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. I wish we had weather like that today. A year ago, we had snow and a high of 39 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1997. 3.6 inches of snow fell back in 2013.

Looking forward to wiring up those gang plate switches and the dimmer next weekend. I think I will put the shelf/gun rack strip and the cap roof lighting on the same dimmer switch but with separate on off switches. It looks like I can also wire the built in USB port and volt meter to an on off switch so it won’t be glowing all night or wasting power unnecessarily. Nice blade connectors that are easy to crimp, use and move around as needed. I also want to get the low voltage disconnect hooked up. Since I pulled the solar controller, it seems like the accessory battery isn’t going flat so quickly. Maybe I won’t have to rush out to replace it, although I may still do it before peak camping season. I hate sitting in the dark at camp.

In four weeks on March 26 the sun will be setting at 7:15 pm (Daylight Savings Time), which is 1 hour and 33 minutes later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 52 and 34 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 49 and 29 degrees. The record high of 74 degrees was set back in 1986.

Looking ahead, Daylight Savings Time is in 2 weeks, Palm Sunday is in 6 weeks, Easter is in 7 weeks, Mother’s Day is in 11 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend is in 3 months and Father’s Day is in 16 weeks.

January 26, 2017 8 AM Update

The corrosive weather of the rust belt continues today with cloudy skies and saltΒ encrustedΒ everythingΒ with temperatures around 36 degrees on our way towards forty six. Galvanized steel and billions in largess from the New York City somewhat covers up the rust but that road salt ultimately does its damage. On mornings like this you have to wonder why anybody in their right mind would stay in the rust belt. Millions have already left.Β

I did not sleep well last night.Β Maybe that’s why I’m cranky. Β I was in bed by a little after 10 PM but I laid in bed listening to podcasts until after midnight and kept waking up. I guess I should have put the red light on earlier and had less screen time, and taken a sleeping pill. Maybe draw the curtains. I forgot to turn the heat up when I got home last night, so everything we frigid in my apartment by early morning. I hate sleeping in the winter, I find it incredibly difficult. Kept hearing about Trump wasting taxpayer dollars on the stupid wall and going after undocumented immigrants, who just came to our country to work hard scrubbing floors and milking cows, so we can have clean office buildings and delicious milk in our cereal.

Despite the clouds, days are getting noticeably longer.Β Β The sun will set at 5:01 pm with dusk around 5:31 pm, which is 1 minutes and 17 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 47 minutes of daylight, an increase of 2 minutes and 11 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 31 degrees at 6am. 17 degrees above normal. West wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, it got down to 20 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1994.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Ground Hog Day when the sun will be setting at 5:10 pm with dusk at 5:40 pm. On that day in 2016, we had partly sunny skies and temperatures between 46 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1981.

I’m still giggling over that article that I had some country boys calling Hillary Clinton a mean old heifer. Like all stereotypes, there is a lot of truths about it, even if it’s ugly and awful. Hillary was one of the worse candidates Democrats have had in a generation. That said she was put forward in era of rising expectations by Democratic activists and forced to be a bad candidate by those who pushed her so far to the left. I told people that 2016 was going to be a lot like 1968, and so it turned out to be. Unfortunately for us all, the Republicans nominated a megalomaniac fire cracker that’s going to blow up in all our hands. So be it, we are all victims of the results of our elections. Public policy can always be reversed in future years. Β So far, I’m not a fan of the new President, but that’s not to be expected as a liberal Democrat.

The first chart is up on the blog today. Didn’t work earlier in the morning, but it has been fixed. Minor typo in the code.Β Many others are being worked on, and as I master ChartJS, I expect the diagrams and charts only improve. I’ve been wanting to add charts for a while on the blog but I had to implement and fully test the supporting code. There is a few glitches to fix over the weekend and I hope to further automate the code to make it easier to create new graphs and charts.

Ground Hog Day 2016 Morning

Good Morning! Happy Ground Hog Day. Early spring it looks like. Currently 40 degrees and sunny this morning in Albany. This afternoon we are looking for a high around 45 degrees. Light breeze. Going to be a nice one for early February. Sunset at 5:09 PM with darkness around 5:30. Should be a nice sunset. Tonight the Waning Crescent Moon with 36% visible will rise around 2:03 AM. Early risers and those up before tomorrow’s sunrise are most likely to see it. The new moon is next Monday.

I left my cellphone home this morning, so I guess I won’t be able to use it at work today. I realized I didn’t have my cellphone with me, so my choice was either to run home and catch a later bus or leave the phone home. I decided on the later. At least it will be well charged when I get home.

Certainly the bright sunshine nice this morning. It’s been so cloudy, dark, and gray lately. Sunshine just gives us some hope, especially as we enjoy it’s warmth. All things considered, this has been a rather depressing winter season. But maybe the early spring will mean warmer temperatures with adequate rain to prevent the fire risk. We will see. I heard that January was pretty darn dry by historical standards. I’m sure we have to get at least one good snow storm this year.

It seems like January came and went fairly quickly, which is nice because I’m already pretty tired of winter. It’s not so much the cold and the snow as the extended darkness. The nights are just so incredibly long this time of year. That said, I wouldn’t mind a nice weekend up at Moose River Plains once summer comes back around.

I think so much of the obsession over the Iowa Caucasus is a bit silly. NPR had three hours of analysis on the Iowa Caucus results last night, which I have to admit I did tune into hear a bit. Like many Americans, I was fascinated by the race between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Ms. Clinton won the Iowa Caucus but not by a lot. I was surprised how well Mr. Sanders preformed. Iowa is a fun state with good gun laws and not a lot of restrictions on open burning in the country. If it burns, you can burn it within reason. They as a state are a bit devoid of public lands, but they do have some good dirt for growing crops, which is why they produce a big chunk of the nation’s corn and soy, and they also feed a lot of hogs and cattle. Food is good.

That said, I think Punxsatawney Phil can tell us more about our country’s future then the Iowa Caucus.

Chapin Brothers – Ground Hog Song
Come out little ground hog.
Put your head above the ground.
Can’t you see there ain’t no shadow, on that cold, cold ground?
But if you dance your song, and you know that winter’s gone.
Come out little ground hog, spring a spring on me!

There are 2 months, 23 days until Arbor Day. Looking forward to the warmer temperatures and some green popping up. Maybe the Ground Hog is on to something.

This day in 1934, the Export-Import Bank of the United States is incorporated. The bank finances and insures foreign purchases of United States goods for customers unable or unwilling to accept credit risk. It was suspended for several months this year, when Congress refused to renew it’s charter, suggesting the bank was corporate welfare, and allowed risky American corporations to succeed when the market alone would not sustain them.

Grooving along, living in the new world with Oliver Anthony

Songs about about of populism and nostalgia dominate the radio while people think back to the simpler more innocent times of the 2000s and 2010s when Climate Change induced storms didn’t lead the news headlines a leading presidential candidate wasn’t an octonian or an multi time indicted felon. As we count down the days until America turns 250 with all the signs and banners to be erected and days to be celebrated with fireworks and picnics.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear Saturday around 4 am.

Woke up early ⏰ as I was asleep early at nine 9⃣ and made an omelet with chopped zucchini and tomatoes that I ran through the food processor with garlic and onion. Added a little bit of milk and corn starch to make the egg extra fluffy. Breakfast first then the walk. Normally I prefer the other order but it was dark out early.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 3pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 69 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. South wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1947.

Maybe it won’t be a wash out today🌧️ but I think it probably best to take the bus 🚍 in today to work as it likely will be rain by evening. I’ve also noticed a numbness in my finger tips πŸ–• and that’s a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome developing in my hands πŸ‘ by putting too much weight on them and pinching the nerves. Not as bad yesterday as I was more careful about putting so much weight on them heading home climbing that big hill out of gorge but I got to be careful about pinching the nerves and causing permanent damage needing surgery.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.5° from the due south horizon (-12.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:07 pm with the sun in the west (280°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-northwest (286°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:45 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 8:13 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south-southwest (194°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 234,641 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:51 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I rode out to Voorheesville πŸš‚ along the rail trail and spent a little bit of time out at the park 🏞 with a book before it got dark out. 25 miles ridden and 4 miles walked yesterday. Today I doubt 🀷‍♂️ I’ll do much riding today but I’ll walk five miles plus do the stairs at the office. As previously noted, I was in bed before 9 PM and didn’t bother to watch the Republican debate. 🐘 It’s not like I plan to vote for any candidates, as I’m an enrolled Democrat and I think I prefer Biden over any of the GOP candidates, not that I’m a big lover of Biden either but he does seem to be doing some meaningful things on the environment and climate change — to say nothing of labor and civil rights. Maybe he’s the best option, but I’ll cast my protest vote come November 2024, as New York is almost certain to go blue regardless of my vote. πŸ’™

Oliver Anthony’s Rich Men North of Richmond, 🎀 might be rocking the country charts, with it’s anti-establishment critical view of what’s happening in our government, but he also has a pretty good mixture of other songs worth listening to even if you don’t like his controversial lyrics for putting the government in a bad light. 🏰 I was listening to more of his songs, and really enjoying it. There is a lot of other good artists over at RadioWV.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. 🌧 Low of 63 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 1am. πŸ–οΈ Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1940.

Been researching how to bake bread 🍞 as I am thinking from fresh homemade bread would be good come this winter, and I could make it with less oil and sugar then many of the commercial breads. Not looking at recipes that much, but trying to learn how all the ingredients play together and alternative forms of bread, especially whole grains and oatmeal. 🌿 Thinking it would be good with a good split-pea or other homemade soup, or dipped in extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Already using balsamic vinegar for acidity in many of my foods, it really gives a lot of meals a lot of extra flavor.

Back in 1967, the Yippies of Abbie Hoffman’s Youth International Party temporarily disrupts trading at the New York Stock Exchange by throwing dollar bills from the viewing gallery, πŸ’΅ 🀑 πŸ’Έ causing trading to cease as brokers scramble to grab them. As they say, it’s all about the money. Or something like that Dan Halloran said in his bid to sell the NYC Mayorship. πŸ‘©‍βš–οΈ Money matters a lot, it’s a way to get a lot of things done.

Weekend forecast is improving. ☺ Saturday, a slight chance of showers between 8am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 65 at 11am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Columbus Day β›΅ πŸ‚πŸ when the sun will be setting at 6:20 pm with dusk at 6:47 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 71 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1954.
