The swamp has arrived โ›ˆ๏ธ

As have the very scammy swamp cooler advertising you see on social media which I like to reinforce by clicking on those ads. It’s humid!

Good morning! Happy Saturday! Clouds and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 65 degrees. It’s definitely summer.

Today will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Maximum dew point of 70 at 1pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1982.

 East Branch Sacandaga River

Another rather dreary Saturday ahead ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

After a busy week that went by like a flash, we made it to another maybe not so nice of a weekend. Tomorrow looks better but with a cold, blustery conditions. But then warmer and sunny for the eclipse on Monday, and the same with Tuesday but then rain comes back in for the second half of next week. But things might improve come next weekend. Is that an opportunity to get out out town?

Good morning! Happy Saturday. The weekend has arrived already again. Seemed like the last time I looked it was Easter weekend and I was in the Adirondacks.  ๐ŸฆŽ Time goes by so quickly these days. Clouds with rain showers, a damp 36 degrees in Delmar. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Started the morning with some johnnycakes with sweet onions and spinach. ๐Ÿฅž Topped them with cottage cheese then had a small side of ground oatmeal and banana ๐ŸŒ as sort of a dessert. โ˜•๏ธ And more coffee. I had much too much caffeine yesterday, and it impacted my sleep during the middle of the night last night, but it wasn’t too bad. Will need to go shopping tomorrow early. ๐Ÿ›’ Usually Sunday morning early, the crowds are thin and the stores well stocked.

Today will have a chance of showers before 10am, then a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 46 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Apparently they’ve not gotten the news at the weather bureau that the calendar says spring. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1921. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1982.โ„

It’s not the nicest day out, but I’m hoping as the day goes on the weather can improve, and I can ride out to Voorheesville. ๐Ÿšด‍โ™‚๏ธ Later on I might also want to go to the library to upload some things to my blog, ๐Ÿ“š ๐Ÿค– and maybe get some books out. I am taking a bit slow today, as yesterday was a long day after getting up at 4:30 or 5 AM then going to work at 6:30 AM on my bike, then going to the other office by around 9:30 or so, and then working there until quarter to six, and riding back home, as I missed the bus by a few minutes. ๐ŸšŒ But it’s all good, I got my exercise in. ๐Ÿ’ช

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54.1° from the due south horizon (-16.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:50 pm with the sun in the west (274°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (280°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:28 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 7:56 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:31 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

My neighbor who had that big pile of trash next to his unit has moved out ๐Ÿš๏ธ and they’re remodeling the unit next door. Doing work today too, but not super noisy work. It’s a good sign they’re remodeling the other unit. As it seems like they won’t be in a rush to tear down my unit. I should be prepared to have my rent bumped up $100 a month come June, as it expected from the notice of the increase to $800, but so be it.

The thing is I still need time to research and think about buying or building a home.  ๐Ÿ’ญ I am not so aggressively looking at that right now, though I do keep my eye on Zillow and Landwatch to see what is popping up these days, ๐Ÿ„ and houses to for the right one. Even if I do end up signing a lease in June, there will probably be an escape hatch or at any rate, it’s going to take time, especially if I’m thinking of building. I am undecided though, as renting remains the most affordable option due to the low cost of heat and electricity, and being able to bike or take public transit  ๐Ÿš๏ธ to work each day. The thing is if you save and invest in things like stocks and bonds  ๐Ÿ“Š you have a lot more flexibility. You can move cash out of state, you can’t move a house.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 9pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 33 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. North wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 13 occurred back in 1982.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Powerlines Cut Through Moreau Lake State Park

My urge for camping ๐Ÿ• got the best of me โ˜ƒ

You know I’m happier in the woods than in any city, next to the fire burning things and having a good ol time. I knew last night was gonna be cold but it turned out not that bad though today will be cooler. Worked out good bar some issues with the camp stove last night and forgetting salt for the icy campsite and I’m glad to get away even if it’s just one night.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Mostly cloudy with some snow flurries and 30 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 22.

I decided to take option 3 and do a quick overnight trip to Rennselearville State Forest. โ›บ I think I’m going to take down camp soon and then head home before the front comes through and brings snow squals with strong winds and it’s cold enough the roads will ice up. I kind of wanted to do two โœŒ๏ธ nights but I decided it’s not that far if it ends up being one night. It is probably my best chance to get away a bit, next weekend I’m busy with the Reszin documentary and it looks even colder. โ„ Winter has arrived as we enter the coldest part of the year. Little worried too that I’m starting to get a bit of a chest cough, ๐Ÿ˜ท you know the one that’s been going around. I’m hoping it’s just a breathed in too much smoke last night.

But first a second pot of coffee โ˜•. Few snow ๐ŸŒจ flurries around and I shouldn’t procrastinate but the morning turned out nicer than I had expected with blue skies and a fairly slack wind. Enjoyed the last of the Mariaville Farm Bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ from local hogs on sale by Farmer Alice at For the Love of Bacon with the eggs ๐Ÿฅš and veggies this morning. ๐ŸŒ… It’s a treat with camping. Wasn’t sure if I was going to get the camp stove working, regulator is giving me trouble again. Wasn’t working at all last night. I slept with it to keep it warm last night and fiddled with the connection and dipped in rubbing alcohol and now it’s working again. Going to add a propane line filter and maybe pick up a second regulator to avoid problems in the future ๐Ÿ”ฎ.

Today will snow showers likely, mainly after noon. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 35 degrees at 9am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 9th. Breezy, with a south wind 9 to 14 mph becoming southwest 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1932. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1999.โ„

The wind is what concerns me. ๐ŸŒฌ Some forecasts are talking about windchills especially tonight around 0 degrees. I am not sure I want to be camping out in, plus my camp stove has been acting up in the cold. I’m having issues again with the campstove regulator getting jelled up and plugged with dirt and condensate. I think when I can get home this week, I am going to order a second regulator for the campstove, plus another Big Buddy filter. โ™จ My other propane stove, whose burners ultimately burnt out a second time, had a few issues with this occassionally but this new stove I got last summer has constant issues now that it’s cold, though oddly not all on the Christmas trip to Madison County, though I stored it in the warmth of my truck. ๐Ÿšš Though if the Big Buddy filter works like it does with the Big Buddy Heater and the lantern, I expect smooth sailing going forward. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ It’s good to have back ups.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:03 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (216ยฐ) at an altitude of 29ยฐ from the horizon, 226,294 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 29 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 16. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 22 mph breeze โ›… from the west with gusts up to 44mph. Today will have 9 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 33 seconds over yesterday.

I am worried enough about the possibility of white out conditions driving home ๐ŸŒซ that I want to be on the road by 11 AM. I am going to sip my coffee, then take my campsite down before it gets too late. I could for a walk, and the road is hard enough for a bike ride now, but I think I’d rather just head home and avoid the risk of driving on snow-covered roads. Its not like I am on the other side of the earth — it’s a 21 mile drive that takes roughly a half hour, as most of the road is 55 MPH bar Clarksville and Rensselearville. I’m right on a plowed dirt road, and 1,000 feet from asphalt so I’m not worried about being snowed in, but driving home on those hills in snow and ice, could be kind of miserable.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 17 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 11th. Maximum wind chill around 9 at 3am; Breezy, with a southwest wind 17 to 22 mph decreasing to 9 to 14 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Other weather reports are calling for a wind chill closer to 0. I don’t mind such cold when I’m in the truck protected from the wind, but during the evening next to campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ that would be downright cold, I’m afraid. Wind worries me more then cold, as it sucks the heat away from your body. That said, my gear is really good for camping down to about 10-15 degrees, much colder then that at night in my unhreated truck cap it gets cold. In 2023, we had light snow in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1957.

Still I’m glad I got away for one day. ๐Ÿ˜€ Just a night in the woods puts a smile on my face. Despite the woods being wet from rain we’ve had, it was cold enough up here in the State Forest that ground was frozen solid and was able to have a good fire. I’ll head home, get unpacked — it’s not that much stuff for one night ๐Ÿ’ผ — and shower. ๐Ÿšฟ Maybe go for a bike ride this afternoon ๐Ÿšด or down to the library ๐Ÿ“š if conditions aren’t too harsh. Or maybe cook up a big pot of chicken soup, ๐Ÿฒ especially if I’m not feeling good. I am thinking my next trip will be Presidents Day to Moscow Hill Horse Camp ๐Ÿ‡ in Madison County, but we’ll see. Get some nice weather, and maybe I’ll head back to the wilderness sooner for a weekend trip, like during my 41st birthday weekend, though winter is tough. Next weekend will be too cold it appears, plus the Reszin documentary.

Looking ahead, next Sunday starts the Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:26 pm. Martin Luther King ๐Ÿ‘‘ weekend is early this year. On that day in 2023, we had snow showers, cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2006.

Abandoned Farm House

The first snowy Sunday of winter 2024! โ˜ƒ

Winter has arrived though it’s not the dire emergency the weather pundets made it sound yesterday. A few inches of fresh snow, landlord hasn’t plowed the driveway yet but it’s not deep. Even the library is expected to open later on, though with an hour delay due to the snow.

Good morning! Happy Snowy Sunday. Snow is falling and 30 degrees at the in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

While I was up I stayed in bed ๐Ÿ› until nearly seven this morning ๐Ÿณ when I started my day frying an onion and ultimately spinach and eggs. I’m planning a quiet day at home to do some reading ๐Ÿ“– and studying.

Today will snow, mainly before 5pm. ๐ŸŒจ High of 30 degrees at 9am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1915. 7.2 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

Went to the laundromat ๐Ÿ‘• and the grocery store yesterday ๐Ÿ›’ after the snow started ๐ŸŒจ but the laundromat was still surprisingly crowded and Hannaford was so picked over and no bananas. ๐ŸŒ It’s kind of frustrating ๐Ÿ˜ค as I really like bananas. Also no whole wheat flour ๐ŸŒพ and the coffee โ˜• they had was really pricey.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 25ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:53 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:09 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:45 pm. At sunset, look for snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Thinking it’s a cold day and would be good for soup. ๐Ÿฅ˜ It would be good to use up the rest fresh spinach I have in the soup before it wilts and it’s a great way to warm myself up. Also thinking about using some of the corn meal I bought to make corn porridge for lunch. I still have some bread ๐Ÿž but I should think about kneading some dough up for baking tomorrow morning. We’ll see.

I think there is too much snow for biking ๐Ÿšณ and my skis โ›ท๏ธ are broke but I might go for a walk later ๐Ÿšถ and maybe go down to the library. ๐Ÿ“š Also want to clean the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ and kitchen. ๐Ÿงผ And just have a quiet day, maybe work on the blog code.

Tonight will have isolated snow showers before 10pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 24 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Maximum wind chill around 14 at 4am; Northwest wind 5 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1878.

Looking ahead, there are next week is the Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ when the sun will be setting at 4:55 pm with dusk at 5:24 pm. On that day in 2023, we had snow showers, cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2006.

Hoping to get out of town for Martin Luther King Day Weekend โ›บ but I’m not how good the weather will be. โ˜” It’s actually looking like rain for next Saturday then seasonably cold.

Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Seems like the most appropriate John Prine song for this Flag Day 2023. I was going to post it Memorial Day being the irreverent SOB that I am but whatever. Loving America is also about criticizing it when our leaders are wrong. But what do I care, I’m leaving this town come tomorrow morning for the Adirondacks.

Good morning! What day is it? Flag Day, of course. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ At least in the parts of America that still celebrates such things. You can taste the wood smoke, cow shit and heavy fog ๐ŸŒซ around 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. It’s kind of nice when you live enough on the outskirts of the city to have the smells of the country. ๐Ÿฎ Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees. The AQI is 43. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Woke up at 5:30 this morning and had reheated egg quiche ๐Ÿฐ with coffee โ˜•. Went out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ and came back home and ran to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ and splattered shit all over the toilet and my boxers. They were fun to wash this morning. ๐Ÿ’ฉ I almost thought about tossing them as they don’t really fit anymore. In my rush to get out to the Bike Rescue ๐Ÿšฒ last night I decided to have the last chicken patty I had left in my freezer from before I decided to cut out processed unhealthy food from my diet. ๐Ÿ” I think it might have already gone bad or maybe I’m not used processed food, though I had it with plenty of beans, celery, onions and brown rice to supplement it. But it left me hungry and feeling sick ๐Ÿคฎ for the rest of the evening. It had a ton of salt in it and pretty high on fat too. My gut doesn’t like change, I had a similar situation when I first started eating a lot of oatmeal and fiber rich foods. I still don’t feel great but I think I’m past that now all cleaned up and showered. ๐Ÿ›€

Today will have a chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 74 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1892.

I drove down to the Trinity Center last night in the South End ๐Ÿšฒ, hoping to get some advice on rebuilding the back wheel of my old bicycle.I was still hoping for some advice on the wheel, but when I got there, the door was locked on the Trinity Center and the lights were off. ๐Ÿšช I walked around back to see if I missed, then moved my truck a little closer, deciding to double check that nobody was there, ringing the door bell but nobody arrived. Maybe they didn’t have volunteers, that happens, they’ve been closed the past few weeks. ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ

It’s fine, I decided I’ll bring the rear wheel to the Adirondacks this weekend and play with it some more. I am starting to doubt though that I’ll ever get this bicycle back on the road, ๐Ÿšณ as I keep discovering new issues. The thing about it was when I was unloading my bicycle I noticed my front wheel is now out of true, among other issues. But I do want to learn how to replace spokes, and learn more about bicycles. ๐Ÿ“š I got two books out of the library about bicycle repair, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ง and I want to learn more about bicycles before I plunk down money for another used or rebuilt one. I think I will continue to cannibalize parts from this bicycle, and eventually donate it somewhere, but the mean time I can store in the crawl space. But next time I’ll call or email in advance โœ‰๏ธ before going down there.

It’s fine, I needed to get propane, some supplies from Walmart and fuel for my truck. โ›ฝ All much too expensive but I wanted to have everything I need for the trip, including an new air pump to inflate my tube or in case of emergency, a little bit of extra rubber cement to patch any leaks, some more kidney beans, olives, and a few other groceries. ๐Ÿช Going to get fresh veggies and fruit on my way up to camp, probably stop in Gloversville at Price Chopper to get those things. Often the quality is better then Walmart, and it will be hopefully more fresh shopping on Thursday. But more expensive. Everything has gotten so darn expensive these days. ๐Ÿ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6° from the due south horizon (-0.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 27 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 63 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce small hail. ๐ŸŒง Low of 56 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 8th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1985.

Heading out of town for a Long Weekend starting on Thursday morning. ๐Ÿ• I was going to take off Friday and Tuesday, but it looks like the legislature will be back on Tuesday, so I best be back on Juneteenth. Plus Thursday looks like one of the best weather days of the long weekend. Friday looks cold and wet. I am going to bring my propane heater, along with the tarp for sure. It will be nice to be away from it all for some time. My radio doesn’t work, so I will be fully off-grid without cell service. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Hoping for some sun for swimming and to keep hte solar working well so my batteries are good.

Kind of a mixed bag but cool for the long weekend. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Thursday, sunny and 78. Friday, best chance of showers on and off all day, high 72. Saturday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Juneteenth, mostly sunny with showers late. High near 78. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

As Looking ahead, next Wednesday is Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938. That means the Mine Kill Pool should be open then ๐ŸŠ so if it’s nice that’s a lot of fun. But next weekend is a way off and I want to look at bicycles that weekend first before deciding if I want to go swimming. But also it would be great to get some fresh produce at the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley, do some camping and adventures not so far from home.

Powley Bridge

February 10, 2023 Night

Good evening! Another work week has come to the end, the weekend has arrived. Should be a nice one but maybe a bit cool on Saturday compared to the rest of the warm winter this year. But it’s a relative thing.

Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ and 41 degrees in Delmar for the evening walk. ๐Ÿšถ I swear I felt a few rain โ˜” drops mid walk. There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing around 1 am.

Walking home from the Park and Ride lot ๐Ÿ…ฟ I was thinking this was the last time I’ll have to do it but I might continue to get off there if the weather is nice on days when I have to dress up for work. But those days when the weather is bad the express is a good option and I don’t have to depend on asking the driver to drop me off at home. ๐Ÿก Plus it’s really good for all those session mornings and it gets me to the office ๐Ÿข a little earlier than which is good as a director to be in early.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers between 1am and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 15th. West wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 12 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1962.

Last month, January my gas and electric bill was $103 which isn’t bad figuring its January and inflation. ๐Ÿ”Œ I don’t like paying much for gas and electricity as I don’t think I get much value out of it. It was outside of that first week of February that one Friday and Saturday a very mild month and I’ve been keeping my heat to a minimum level especially now that I have that heated blanket. But it’s mostly been do to that very mild weather.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 75% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:28 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:31 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:00 am in the east-southeast (109ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 4 seconds.

Pasta for dinner tonight. ๐Ÿ That used to be my go to but it has a lot of calories and it’s not real filling so I eat too much. I just abided by the one bowl rule, no second helpings, included a lot frozen corn ๐ŸŒฝ and had a bunch of frozen strawberries and bananas for dessert. And now I have at least two or three more meals I’ll freeze for next week for lunch and dinner. I try to mix things up.

Sunrise is one minute and 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:41 am with sun in the east-southeast (116ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 34 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over last night.

Going to bed ๐Ÿ› fairly early as I want to walk down to the Norman’s Kill Gorge ๐Ÿž before the crowds. ๐Ÿ‘ช Maybe leave as soon as dawn for the falls at 6:30. It’s a reheat breakfast morning so it should be quick and easy.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 26 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1981. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1933.โ„

In four weeks on March 10 the sun will be setting in the west (265ยฐ) at 5:56 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 5 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 56 and 20 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 43 and 24 degrees. The record high of 72 degrees was set back in 1977.

Looking forward to the longer evenings ahead. ๐Ÿ“š Already thinking about going down to the park in the evening with a book, or even just for a nice walk. Four weeks from Sunday that will be possible with the time change. ๐Ÿ•’

Looking ahead, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is Next Friday, St. Patrick’s Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 5 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 8 weeks, 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 2 months, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 12 weeks, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 3 months, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 22 weeks, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 29 weeks, September ๐ŸŽ is in 29 weeks, Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 29 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 7 months, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 32 weeks, Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 41 weeks, December ๐ŸŽ„ is in 42 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 10 months, Bill of Rights Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 44 weeks and Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ is in 45 weeks.

Sledding Hill

May 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ ! Days are definitely getting longer, with lots of daylight in evening after work. Three weeks to Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ . I can’t believe that’s so close. It won’t be like last year for sure. Mostly sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind.

A nice spring morning. ๐ŸŒธ I’m thinking it won’t be long before it’s real hot out. 70 degrees days are quite rare in the Albany area. Usually it’s cool in the 60s in May until it’s in the 80s and 90s. The official 70 degree days in range are usually just due to averages, not actual conditions on the ground. It just turns out we rarely have truly average weather, it’s more a combination of the extremes. That said, with the current weather pattern, I’d say it’s going to be quite a bit on cool side of things for a while.

The express bus stop remains empty this morning, ๐Ÿš but it looks like it’s ready whenever service returns. I can’t imagine it will be long, the New York City Subways are restoring full service in the next few weeks, and it seems like they are bringing back more state employees every day. ๐ŸšŒ I am going to be working downtown more over the next few weeks, and maybe it will be transitioning back to a more normal way of doing things. But it will be a pain until they fully restore rush hour service and end capacity limits on the elevators ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ during the evening rush. Maybe I can take the stairs. ๐Ÿง—‍โ™‚๏ธ Honestly, I kind of liked remote work and doing things from the Spectulator library, ๐Ÿ’ป while camping in back country, but I guess things have change, although I think it’s silly as the way we’ve done things over the past year works okay.

Been thinking about what the best way to do weather average for the blog. ๐ŸŒฉ Do you use the 15-year climate averages or the more typical 30-year climate averages? Good question! I feel like the 15-year averages from 2006-2020 might be too based on decadal trends that are particularly unusual and it’s possible that the 2020s will be cooler, although with climate change I have my doubts. โ„๏ธ Most meteorologists use the 1991-2020 averages, which I might end up using just for consistency sake. Plus this allows me to celebrate at least in my head on what a nice warm day it is, even if it’s not really the case. Even with the longer averages, there is no more time periods at least in Albany where the average high temperature is no longer below freezing. So weeks of icy roads and sidewalks seem increasingly unlikely, a thing I’ve noticed in recent years. Climate is getting warmer.

Today will have patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, increasing clouds ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. 6 degrees below normal, which feels like April 25th. May hasn’t quite arrived yet in the view of Mr. Weather. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1930. 0.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.3° from the due south horizon (-6.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:23 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (288°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:03 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 8:33 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:13 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over yesterday.

I want to get to store and get groceries and supplies some time this morning. ๐Ÿช I have a meeting at 1 PM, and I like to go out during my lunch time, but I might take it a bit early to get it done. Last night, I put some baking soda on the carpet where I think I noticed the smell yesterday, and left the windows open last night, vacuuming things up this morning, and now it doesn’t have that pungent smell I noticed last night. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ I still want to get some air freshers and additional cleaning supplies too. While I don’t know when my landlord is coming over for repairs, I figure I’ve done my due diligence by notifying him of problems I’ve notice and it’s good to get things cleaner. ๐Ÿงน Often I delay cleaning, but it’s nice not having dust and dirt everywhere.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. 6 degrees below normal, which is similar to April 25th. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2020, we had light rain in the evening, which ended and it became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1968.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 56 degrees at 4pm. 13.9 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1936. There was a dusting of snow in 1977.โ„ If it’s not too wet, maybe that’s a good day to walk out to Five Rivers with the binoculars and observe spring birds, like I do nearly every weekend these days when I’m in town. ๐Ÿฆ

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 62. ๐Ÿ˜Ž West wind 7 to 10 mph. Maximum dew point of 39 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 69 degrees. Sunday seems like the best day of the weekend, I am probably going to go hiking somewhere in the Heldebergs. Maybe Thacher Park, although I kind of prefer to go some where a little more wild with fewer people. Maybe Rensselearville State Forest, after noon when the spring turkey hunters are done. ๐Ÿฆƒ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid weather with temperatures between 83 and 68 degrees. I remember that well from working up in Spectulator and camping near Mason Lake. Busy, working weekend holiday, but at least I was up north. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.

Not sure what my Memorial Day Weekend will be like this year, ๐Ÿœ but I know that the black flies wait in waiting. Maybe I should plan somewhere are fewer black flies. I could do wilderness camping this year, and avoid crowds at one of state forests outside of mountains. Or I could go up to Vermont or the Adirondacks and swat the black flies. Not sure which days I will be in the office and which days will be remote, so that might depend where I have to go and how god my cell service must be. ๐Ÿ“ฑ If I am planning to work remote, I’ll have to be somewhat near a WI-FI signal as I am reducing my plan to correlate with spending more time in the office, and because I don’t need it as much with things re-opening. I wonder how long before the library is fully re-opened for work inside? ๐Ÿ“š
