Cold start to the winter camping season โ›บ โ„

While I was warm and comfortable under the covers in my unheated truck cap last night my toes were cold and stiff. Cold getting up but the heater was warm as was the coffee and eggs with all the fixings. Didn’t get up until after seven as the morning was so cold and dark.

Good morning! Partly sunny and 17 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

That coffee is good. โ˜• Stove is still a bit slow from the plugging to got last time I was camping but it’s working fairly well. The heater is nice and warm. Eggs for breakfast. ๐Ÿณ Plus enjoying a grapefruit. ๐ŸŠWatching the sun rise this morning, very cold but still.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 5th. South wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1990. 12.3 inches of snow fell back in 1969.โ„

The plan for today is to visit Oxbow Falls County Park then head to Canastota. ๐Ÿšฒ I want to ride the Erie Canalway to Rome as time allows. Should be a good day, hoping it warms up a fair amount by midday. โ˜€ At least it shouldn’t be cloudy and it looks like the wind will die down.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 23.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 30 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the east-southeast (104ยฐ) at an altitude of 38ยฐ from the horizon, 232,306 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of over yesterday.

Yesterday when I got to camp it was a mess. ๐Ÿšฏ There had apparently been a party ๐Ÿป at the campsite since I was last here and a ton of broken glass, beer bottles and half burnt pallets everywhere. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Nails too, I’m a bit worried about getting one in my tires. I tried to pick things up to the best of my ability, at first sorting out as many of the recycling as possible โ™ป but ultimately just scooping a lot up into the ever growing ash pile at the edge of the campsite.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 27 degrees at 6am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 2nd. Maximum wind chill around 23 at 6pm; South wind 6 to 9 mph. Much warmer than yesterday. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which and it cleared oytby the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1955.

Last night ๐ŸŒƒ I had a nice camp fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and the moonlight was great but it was cold โ„ with lows in the single digits and a breeze that slackened a bit as the night progressed. ๐Ÿฅ“ The bacon I got was good though.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 17th. South wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. November 5, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 51 degrees at the Stoney Pond. ๐ŸŒŒ There is a south-southwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 42 degrees.

A nice evening quite mild ๐Ÿ for November out here in Madison County. ๐Ÿฎ Quite mild but the leaves are all gone and the nights are quite long at this point. It was a nice drive out here but kind of a long trip because I had to stop ๐Ÿ›‘ for remote work ๐Ÿ’ป calls ๐Ÿ“ž and meetings. Plus I also got food ๐Ÿฒ at the Hannaford in Esperance – I was a bit creeped out by the clerk touching my shopping bags ๐Ÿ› and my ID. I’m just so used to people so aggressively social distancing in the Albany area and not wanting to touch others property. I mean the check out lady ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ was very friendly in the small town kind of way.

I did enjoy the drive out here along US 20 and the rural countryside. ๐Ÿšœ Still farmers bringing in the high moisture corn ๐ŸŒฝ but the land is very gray with lots of browns. Not much has changed along the road in recent weeks, the homes are still old and ramshackle ๐Ÿš๏ธ, people doing the best they can to make a living off the land. The fields are being fertilized, the air has that pungent but essential smell ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป of dairy country ๐Ÿ„ in the autumn months. I hope to eventually live in such deep rural areas but where there aren’t so many restrictions on guns ๐Ÿ”ซ and having a burning barrel ๐Ÿ›ข and bonfires ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I just want to own land out in the country where everybody leaves you alone. I love rundown houses with piles of manure, broke down tractors, goats ๐Ÿ tied out front and of course a burn barrel out back.

I was actually surprised how few big TRUMP signs I saw along the way. ๐ŸšฉWhile I did see some Trump flags and signs, I’ve certainly seen more over the top displays on the back roads of the Adirondacks or Pennsylvania. At one level, I do get the appeal of the president – some of those urban laws and policies do come down hard on farm families and country boys who are trying to scrape a living from the dirt. ๐Ÿšœ

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then becoming mostly clear toward daybreak ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Still can see some stars โœจ but I wouldn’t call it a really clear night. But definitely mild. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 2nd. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had light rain. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1951.

I had a nice big fire tonight ๐Ÿ”ฅ as I was fortunate somebody else had left a pile of wood at their campsite. Thats good because after reassembling the camp lantern ๐Ÿฎ it didn’t work. Had a couple of beers ๐Ÿป and a big pot of macaroni and cheese ๐Ÿง€ with diced tomatoes ๐Ÿ… and topped with bread crumbs. A fitting meal ๐Ÿด for a long winter night. โ˜• Also had some coca and chocolate ๐Ÿซ candy I bought on sale after Halloween ๐Ÿฆ‡.

I sat and listened to the radio ๐Ÿ“ป coverage of the presidential election. No real big news ๐Ÿ“ฐ right now but I seems like Joe Biden is pulling ahead. I’m not a big fan of Joe Biden – I voted for the libertarian Jo Jergenson ๐Ÿ—ฝ but I do ultimately think ๐Ÿค” Biden would be far more professional than Trump but I hope congress keeps him on a short leash. ๐Ÿถ I think every president should be impeached from time to time to keep them accountable and honest. โš–

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 74% illuminated. The Beaver ๐Ÿป Moon is on Saturday, November 21. Sunrise is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:25 am with sun in the east-southeast (118ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 6th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 1pm. West wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2015. 3.2 inches of snow fell back in 1933.โ„

Going to be an absolutely beautiful day tomorrow. โ˜บ All weekend should be nice. I’m going to work from Cazenovia library ๐Ÿ“š and then spend some time down by the lake. ๐Ÿž Saturday and Sunday will be much more relaxed and I’ll head home before dark on Sunday which happens early this time of year.

In four weeks on December 3 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) at 4:29 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 42 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 32 and 22 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. The record high of 63 degrees was set back in 2009.

Looking ahead, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 3 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is a month away, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 7 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 8 weeks, National Bird Day ๐Ÿง is in 2 months, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 10 weeks, Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 12 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 14 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 15 weeks.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Rain today but clearing out tomorrow. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Four weeks to Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ. Light drizzle and 51 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Calm wind. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 6 am.

Busy day today and it’s raining out ๐ŸŒง๏ธ so no morning walk. ๐Ÿšท But that’s fine this morning started with an issue I fortunately caught but didn’t catch until late into process ๐Ÿคฏ but it’s all good now. The a big pile of work ๐Ÿ“ฅ hit my desk but I’m good now. More to do but shit ๐Ÿ’ฉ is getting done.

I thought I left my Bluetooth laptop adapter and USB travel hub at the library yesterday ๐Ÿ“š but I didn’t. I found it. Fell out at home. ๐Ÿก I do need to fix the hole in my bag ๐Ÿ›„.

Today will rain, mainly after 11am. ๐ŸŒง High of 53 degrees at 11am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 7am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1947. There was a dusting of snow in 2009.โ„

I have a midday Zoom Meeting ๐Ÿ’ผ so I’ll have to go down to the library after lunch and it’s not a real nice day but it will be fine for working from my truck ๐Ÿšš. Not too hot at least. ๐Ÿšฟ I should shave and shower today. I still haven’t put my contacts in yet. ๐Ÿ‘€ Been busy working from home. ๐Ÿก

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:41 pm with sun having an altitude of 38.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-32.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:34 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (252ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (258ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:12 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 6:39 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:13 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 57 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1947. There was a dusting of snow in 1970.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 60. ๐ŸŒž Light south wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.

I think I may go out to Madison County ๐Ÿฎ tomorrow although I doubt ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I’ll go as far as Stoney Pond and Cazenovia as that’s a long trip and I’m going to head home either Sunday or Monday. โ›บ I do need to figure out where I can find a library to work from for the Zoom Meeting on Monday. The weather isn’t going to be perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป but good enough come the weekend.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:04 pm (Standard Time). July 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly sunny with fog and 65 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. ๐ŸŒ Calm wind. The dew point is 62 degrees. A rather pleasant morning with a breeze on a soon to be hot old July day. Clouds might keep it cooler though.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny. โ˜€ But later on becoming cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 78 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 4pm. Already seeing the clouds start to push in a bit Light southeast wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

I have a few projects to work on today ๐Ÿ“ but I expect a fairly quiet day working from the hammock to replying to emails ๐Ÿ“ง and taking calls ๐Ÿ“ž from my hammock. The work laptop is charging using the solar power now, I’m sure there will be some kind of project come the afternoon to do. ๐Ÿ’ผ Probably at four o’clock. I do want to hit the swimming hole ๐ŸŠ later.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. At sunset, look out for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over yesterday.

I think my plan for today is to work in the Green Mountains ๐Ÿ—ป and maybe hit the swimming hole a few times and then head home after work, assuming it’s not raining too hard for unsafe driving ๐Ÿš˜. It’s been a fun week but I don’t want to camp in the pouring rain ๐Ÿ’ฆ which it looks like we are right on to get a direct hit from Tropical Storm Fay here in the Green Mountains. Plus I’m low on ice but I’ve eaten most of the pershibles.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒง Low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ East wind 15 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. Yeah purty wet. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1986.

I keep finding litter ๐Ÿšฏ around this campsite which I keep picking up. Some people are pigs. ๐Ÿฝ I know that when I camp, anything that doesn’t completely burnt gets packed out for recycling. โ™ป I don’t put aluminum or glass in the fire pit and while I may burn out cans to clean them of food residue, I always clean out the fire pit and remove the cans and any unburnt plastic or similar residue. I bury my poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ and I try to leave wood at the fireplace and tidy up the site before I leave. Nobody wants to see or smell your pile of poop or deal with your garbage. ๐Ÿšฎ

On this day in 1890, Wyoming is admitted to the United States as the 44th US State. Many liberals regard that as a mistake, although it has some beautiful country out in Yellowstone and lots of grass to feed cows and oil and coal. ๐Ÿ—ป And in 1962, Telstar, the world’s first communication satellite is launched. ๐Ÿ“ก

Tomorrow will have showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒง High of 78 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southwest wind around 6 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1936.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

October 22, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. Gray and cloudy and 50 degrees on Delaware Avenue catching the late bus into work ๐Ÿš. Kind of a normal late October day in Upstate NY. โ˜ Dark and gray and smelling like cow shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Well, at least out in the country, the corn is chopped, ๐ŸŒฝ they gotta fertilize before the put in the cover crops. ๐Ÿ€ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 am.

Nice mild morning, dark but that’s expected this time of year. ๐ŸŒ… It little more sun and less gray would have been nice, but it certainly was mild drinking coffee. I barely needed the heater this morning, it was 47 degrees by the time the sun broke.โ˜• Enjoyed my coffee as I sat out back with the dog, having some cereal as I took down camp.๐Ÿœ

This morning I was running late, caught the late bus in, ๐ŸšŒย as I took down camp at my parents house. Going to rain tonight, so I figure I wouldn’t want to camp in the backyard and tear up the ground unnecessarily.๐Ÿ• I don’t want to tear up the grass any more or compact it, and it’s my last day out there come tomorrow. I am glad, as I really don’t like driving. There is always school buses, ๐ŸŽ’ construction, ๐Ÿšง and generally traffic and delays to deal with. I used to drive a lot more, but now I really don’t like it.

Today will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Damn, should have brought my rain coat โ˜”. Maybe I’ll get wet going home. I can always change. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 59 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 19th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 5pm. Southeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1979. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.โ„

The sun will set at 6:02 pm with dusk around 6:31 pm, which is one minute and 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ Won’t be long until the time change, less then two weeks, then it will be dark an hour earlier. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 50 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 23rd. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1969.

Today in 1897, using a filament of carbonized thread, Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb (it lasted 13 1/2 hours before burning out).๐Ÿ’ก This was the technology widely used for decades, until the florescent bulb came out and later the vastly superior LED lighting. It’s hard to remember even when incandescent bulbs were common. Been a long time now that LED technology has been quite widely adapted, and even the old florescent fixtures are being replaced with LEDs. Some LED bulbs can last for decades, although the capacitors in the power supplies may fail before the LEDs themselves are buried in the landfill, or burnt in the incinerator or burn pile.๐Ÿ—‘ Too bad it’s so hard to recycle โ™ป these somewhat rare earths but they don’t do that much.๐ŸŒ

I keep hearing different reports for the weekend. ๐Ÿค” Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 54. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Other models, namely Weather Underground says more rain coming in early on Sunday.๐ŸŒฆ Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees. I am inclined to go out to Charles Baker or maybe Stoney Pond in Madison County, but only if the weather is nice. I haven’t been there for a while. I would probably leave work on Friday around 2 or 3 PM, that way I can get set up before dark. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t mind a quiet weekend at home, maybe doing some more canvasing for David Bissember ๐Ÿ‘Šโœโœ… on Saturday and then hike in the afternoon. Maybe next weekend will be nicer. Early voting starts on Saturday, so I could vote this weekend if I wanted to git ‘r dun and avoid the election day crowds. Maybe Monday evening would best for me though. Ballot is a shit-ton long., although few are competitive unless you like casting protest votes like I do.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:43 pm with dusk at 5:13 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 48 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1994.

Christmas in October?
