May 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . The unofficial end of black fly season, although I tend to think they’re around until July 4th, although come late June it’s mostly mosquitos then July comes around and things aren’t so bad. Rain and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I wanted to walk around to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ this morning before the rain, but it’s already raining and I did not get up early enough apparently. ๐Ÿ˜ด I’ve been bad this weekend about getting started, after getting up at 6:30 AM each day last week, so I could go for my morning walk before heading downtown on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Memorial Day Weekend will continue to be cold, damp and rainy but the skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm in time for picnics, although you’ll definitely want a long sleeve shirt. ๐ŸŒญ ๐Ÿ”

Today will rain, mainly after 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 50 degrees at 4pm. 25 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. North wind around 9 mph. It’s already become a very wet day, and it looks like it only will get wetter. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

Yesterday, I was over at the apartment where they are storing the recovered documents for John Wolcott. ๐Ÿ“œ Didn’t find a lot of interesting things, more papers and photos, mostly personal stuff. Important for him, but it wasn’t a lot of great historic value we found yesterday. But I’ve been mostly looking through photos that we’ve been saving by soaking, separating, and drying. ๐Ÿ–ผ ๐Ÿ‘ƒ At least the files don’t stink as much yet, although we are starting to run the clock with the damp weather ๐Ÿ’ฆ and mildew starting to grow on the wet documents. I’m going to head back there later today.

I was worried that the Fairchild Aerial Photos of Albany Pine Bush in the 1920s were misplaced, but Lynne was able to find them. I really want to get a high resolution scan of them, maybe because I’m a bit biased towards them with my love old aerial photos. ๐ŸŒฒ But they can also really tell a story about the Albany Pine Bush and world long gone. The USGS photos taken in the early to mid-1950s for stereographic mapping of the land for topographic maps is great, but it’s from the 1950s, and a lot of land use change occurred earlier then the 1950s in Pine Bush. ๐Ÿ”

While I should have done this a long time ago, ๐Ÿ“ธ I finally took high resolution photos of my guns and their serial numbers, along with various diplomas and certification documents including my truck title an birth certificate, ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŽ“ and family photos, and put them in an encrypted file both on my laptop and for off-site storage. Just with my ordinary camera. ๐Ÿ“„ This way I figure if I am ever a victim of a natural disaster, be it fire, riot, tornado, flood, I’ll have my photos and important documents backed up, with all the numbers and key information. ๐Ÿ’พ Sure, I’ll probably have to get a new copy of my birth certificate, et. certera at some point but when you have the information it’s easier to get. Data storage is cheap, and while I don’t do the whole cloud thing, โ˜๏ธ off-site is important in case the building I live in is destroyed or my laptop is stolen or damaged. ๐Ÿ”ซ Likewise, with the guns it’s a lot easier to file a police report if you have the serial numbers and photos. Salvaging all those charred documents ๐Ÿ”ฅ really makes me want to be a lot more careful at backing up everything. Plus I’ve purged a ton of paper documents that aren’t relevant anymore. ๐Ÿ—‘ I need to tackle the crawl space and get rid of some worn out clothes and other things this summer. ๐Ÿ‘š โ™ป๏ธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (-1.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly before 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day will have a chance of rain before 7am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. ๐ŸŒฆ Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

I had higher hopes about Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ but it seems like the bad weather will continue until Tuesday when it will get nice. I can work from home on Tuesday, and while I have to work in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, I’m thinking of working from the Speculator area on Friday and Monday, just because there is that great library there and decent places to camp in the area. ๐Ÿ• I am going to hold off on the Potholers for this weekend, although looks plenty warm. I could go for a swim at Speculator Beach.  ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Not sure if I will bring my kayak — my initial feeling is no to that, because I will need the solar power to work. ๐Ÿ›ถ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold but otherwise partly sunny day and temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892. Back before my time, and I suspect yours too.

September 23, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Autumn ๐Ÿ‚! Back to work, I have ethics training, lucky me. Whatever that advertising at the bus stop said. It’s important not to be indicted for a crime due to ethic violations, because it can be hard to buy guns for hunting when you have an outstanding warrant. Three weeks to Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Partly sunny and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees.

Today will be scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. I brought my rain coat. Might be wet later and certainly warm. โ˜” Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 1pm. 16 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 3pm. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1895.

The sun will set at 6:51 pm with dusk around 7:19 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 58 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 30th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 6pm. West wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1963.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Maximum dew point of 57 at 4pm. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 58 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees.

No camping this weekend. I want to get Mr. Sqweak checked out before I hrd back out to the wilderness. Plus I should save money, ๐Ÿ’ต get packed up and ready for vacation. I need to research camping opportunities in Jefferson National Forest in Southern West Virginia. I just need a week off before I spend nine or ten days traveling. ๐Ÿš™

Mr. Sqweak Sqweak. ๐Ÿ Big Red is getting looked at next Tuesday. The first appointment I could get at the dealership was Saturday and I doubt a local shop ๐Ÿช could work on it before then. Or they’d want to work on it Friday and it would get stuck in the shop all weekend. I haven’t heard back from shop yet about my online appointment but they’ll call ๐Ÿ“ž today. I did get an email from Onstar saying that the system detected a maintenance issue but I’m not sure if that was because I filed ๐Ÿ“‚ an online request for service. I expect that I’ll be able to pick it up the same day.

Price Chopper Garbage Bags. The other day when I went to the store I ended up buying black garbage bags at Price Chopper. ๐Ÿšฎ I’m quite happy with them. ๐Ÿ˜Š They don’t seem to rip as much as the cheaper bags when I smash down the garbage. As I either burn or it in the woods or pay two dollars ๐Ÿ’ต a bag at the transfer station, you really need to smash it down as much as possible. As I compost, and at left recycle the cans and glass (and paper separately), I can take the trash to the outside can once a month or less after compaction with my boots.

Litter in the back country. It seems like since they’ve added the picnic tables and outhouses to the campsites on Pisceo-Powley Road litter has become a bigger problem. ๐Ÿšฎ More cans and just miscellaneous stuff. I will burn and pack out what’s reasonable in my campsite but I’m not going clean the whole area up. This one campsite I visited putting my kayak in to the East Canada Creek somebody had left doughnuts and a fire smoldering full of debris. ๐Ÿ’ญ I don’t care if people burn packaging ๐Ÿ”ฅ but people should take home and recycle โ™ป what doesn’t burn.

Credit card and vacation. ๐Ÿ’ณ I figured out that the expenses I have for vacation will fall onto the November card payment so I’ll have a few paychecks before then to build up savings to pay it. And I don’t expect vacation to be more than $500 and probably less, depending on gas prices and how many nights I stay at developed campgrounds probably mostly just for a shower ๐Ÿšฟ.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:15 pm with dusk at 6:43 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1920.

Helldiver 3

December 3, 2018 Morning

Good Monday Morning!ย Yeap, Monday’s come back around again. Those weekends keep getting shorter, but maybe that means summer is coming quicker. One can only hope.ย Next Monday is 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ. Partly sunny and 43 degrees in Delmar. โ›… There is a south-southwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. A remarkably pleasant morning, and while I didn’t leave in time for the express bus, I did catch the local from a bus stop down by town hall about a mile from home. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Definitely a nice walk down to the bus stop by the town hall, indeed I actually went one more stop below there,ย ๐Ÿšย but walked back as there was other passengers getting on and I didn’t want to make the bus stop twice.ย ๐ŸšŒย Almost could have walked down to the express bus but I was late due to dilly-dallying a bit, although not by much. It wasn’t a bad bus ride in though.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 14 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies โ›… and temperatures around 44 degrees. Breezy, 16 mph breeze from the west with gusts up to 28mph. Despite being sunny it’s going to be cool with the breeze.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 1pm, then a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 48 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around November 16th. West wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 2009. 5.2 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 9pm. Mostly cloudy โ˜, with a low of 30 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 23rd. Northwest wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1940. It sometimes get really cold in December; there is a reason it’s called meteorological winter.

Based on the latest forecast for Central NY and the Finger Lakes,ย I am thinking of leaving on Saturday morning and returning on Wednesday,ย for a five day trip. ๐Ÿ•ย Rifle season closes on Sunday, so I would have the woods to myself after that most likely, except maybe for a trickle of small game and black powder guys.ย I could do a whole week, but it’s December, with very long nights and I honestly don’t know if we will get that much time snow free. Plus the office holiday party is a week from Friday.ย  I am going to wait a few more days before deciding, but I could get out of a town for a long weekend it would be nice, and kind of make up for the shitty weather during the week I had planned in November.

I am thinking to head back to the Finger Lakes National Forest.ย ๐ŸŒฒWhile I spent a lot of time up there,ย I actually like it a lot as I have cell services there, it’s not so remote, and I think Potomac and Picnic Area roads are plowed year round. Upper Potomac Road is relatively flat, so it’s not going to be dangerous if there is a dusting of snow or a little ice on it — not that there is much snow left there according to National Snow Analysis. I will probably call the Forest Service first to confirm. The other nice thing about the National Forest, is I can camp there for up to two weeks without getting a permit.ย ๐Ÿ•ย

If I do camp there and it’s sunny, I’ll find a site with decent southern exposure, probably just walk back in the woods to small-game hunt or hike.ย ๐Ÿ”ซThe days are so short, so there won’t be a lot of free time for various adventures at this point. I do plan to check the oil and maybe top off the water in the accessory battery, as I suspect the water levels may be low with it being charged all of the time by the solar panel.๐Ÿ”‹ย I will most likely hot tent, hang some Christmas lights on the trees, plus the back lit flags. I expect with the sunny days expected, I should have plenty of power without ever turning on the truck, even with the long nights and cold weather. I would probably want a site well protected from the wind, just because it gets windy up there, and it’s going to be cold being essentially mid-December by then. I expect very dark and long nights, but reading and podcasts can keep them enjoyable.

This week in the evening,ย I will continue to work on writing Android Apps for my Smartphone,ย ๐Ÿ“ฑย to improve controls on the lamp over my bed and also to control the VMS sign in my bedroom. I actually really like working with Android Studio, once I got it going and shifted into offline mode, as I lack Internet at home. It’s kind of fun, because it’s drag and drop for interface building, and then a little object-oriented java code to hold it together. I didn’t think learning java was too hard, it’s actually a lot like most other object oriented languages. An interactive phone program with Bluetooth is much more powerful then just using an infrared TV remote, as you can have multiple screens and more options. Plus it’s harder to misplace one’s phone then the remote, and almost as easy to use with automatic paring in the code.

As previously noted, next Monday is 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. That’s the deep and dark of December. On that day in 2017, we had snow, patches of fog, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 36 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.
