National Forest Ahead

That drive through Kansas, Vermont to Kelly Stand Road shows the plateau that is made up by the shoulder of Glastenbury Mountain and Whetstone Bluff. It's more dramatic in person then in the Adirondacks.

September 3, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. There is a southwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees.

A nice evening but pretty chilly. πŸŒƒ The moon πŸŽ‘ rising and I’m sitting by the fire. This is a nice campsite with lots of sun but I’m having problems with the data service on my phone here so I’m going to have to move to a new campsite β›Ί before work so I have reliable service for walk.

The drive up here along US 7 was pretty ⛰️ especially around Sutherland. Very little traffic in Albany at rush hour, mostly because of everything is still remote work with the state. 🚘 A few parts of Kelly Stand Road are a bit rough in a few places from being so dry and washboarded.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 55 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 6th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 10pm. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became thunderstorm by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 59 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1946.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous πŸŒ– Moon with 96% illuminated. The Harvest 🌽 Moon is on Friday, September 18. The darkest hour is at 12:52 am, followed by dawn at 5:51 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:20 am in the east (79Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:58 am with sun in the east (86Β°). Tonight will have 10 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. West wind around 14 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1929.

It sure gets dark early this time of year. πŸŒ† I guess that’s not that surprising in the grand scheme of things, autumn is rapidly approaching and summer is rapidly fading away. But I guess it’s a good thing because everybody wants 2020 over sooner than later although I doubt there will be much toasting out New Years Eve in 17 weeks.

In four weeks on October 1 the sun will be setting in the west (266Β°) at 6:32 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 50 minutes and 9 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 78 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 66 and 45 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 1927.

Looking ahead, 6:30 Sunrise πŸŒ‡ is in 1 weeks, Constitution Day πŸ“œ is in 2 weeks, October πŸ¦‡ and Harvest Moon πŸŒ• is in 4 weeks, Average High is 60 πŸ‚ is in 6 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends πŸŒ‡ is in 2 months, Election Day 2019 πŸ—³οΈ is in 2 months, Thanksgiving πŸ¦ƒ is in 12 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise βŒ›οΈ is in 14 weeks, Christmas Eve πŸŽ… is in 16 weeks, New Years Eve πŸŽ† is in 17 weeks, Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„οΈ is in 4 months, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is in 19 weeks, Wolf Moon πŸŒ• is in 21 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day πŸ₯› is in 23 weeks and National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 24 weeks.

May 29, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Definitely summer out there, with temperatures around 75 degrees here off of Branch Pond Road in the Green Mountain National Forest. A warm but nice afternoon. Black flies are pretty bad but with ample DEET soaking my clothes, cowboy hat and to a lesser extent skin, they are manageable. I strung up a tarp to block out the sun and provide some protection when the inevitable thunderstorms come with the summer heat of recent.

I found a decent way to get out to the Green Mountain National Forest, by taking NY 43 out to Sand Lake, then NY 357 to Brunswick, then NY 2 out to NY 22 then North to NY 7. There are probably a few more small towns you have to go through this way but my trip out here was congestion free and most of the route was posted 55 mph. In contrast, NY 7 is constant stop and go on the weekends from left turning cars, Hoosick Street is awful, and there often are crashes. Kelly Stand Road is open although no camping along the reconstructed area, but then again, there never was much good camping up there.

Today I’m going for a hike back to Stratton Pond but I’m not sure if I will go all the way back. I’m watching the weather. Like yesterday, I want to spend some time in the truly frigid waters of Grout Pond cooling off. Then maybe go for a paddle, assuming that the thunderstorms hold off. I have firewood stored under the tarp for later in case we get rain.

All and all, it’s been a somewhat buggy and hot weekend but it sure beats being stuck home in the heat.

May 25, 2016 Night

Good evening. 67 degrees at the 11 o’clock hour. Mostly clear. Dew point is at 53, so not too sticky. Went down to the park for a while. Then to Walmart to pick up some cold cuts for lunch tomorrow, along with a headphone wire extension, so I can finish wiring up the PA speaker in my truck. The speaker seems pretty loud and fits perfectly behind the front bumper, above the skid plate.

I still got a lot of packing tomorrow. I also need to buy some groceries. But it should be a nice weekend. I am still considering whether to leave from work or take the bus home then get my truck. I’m a bit worried about leaving the truck out in the heat in the city and having the ice melt in the cooler or even worse, the propane leaking out of the escape valve and making everything stinky and a mess. The other concern I have is getting up to Kelly Stand Road early enough to get a decent campsite.

September 1, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Today is September 1st. Three weeks to Autumn Begins.Β I know what your thinking. Already? Sunny and 49 degrees in Albany. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. It seems like summer sure ended quickly. Maybe a big warm up though for the kiddies as they go back to school on Tuesday. At any rate, I don’t think we will be seeing any significant snow storms for at least a few more weeks.

Today will be sunny, with a high of 66 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1953.

The sun will set at 7:28 pm with dusk around 7:57 pm, which is one minute and 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly clear conditions and 60 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees below normal. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening. Going to be a cold evening. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1991.

This weekend I’m heading out to Kelly Stand or Branch Pond in the Green Mountain National Forest. Β Unfortunately for me, I have to head home and do some final packing because part of my apartment is all torn up for repairs to the leaky shower faucet. Apparently not only was the faucet leaking, but so were pipes and the unit was a big rust bucket, so they couldn’t just replace the washers in the faucet. Landlord promises to have it all back together by evening though. I couldn’t fill my water containers or take a shower with all the construction going on. But I was told the project would be done today, and I should have less moisture in my apartment, and it will save on his water bill. It will help keep the ice cool for camping though.

I was going to go up to Moose River Plains, but I didn’t want to drive up there in the dark or deal with the traffic on the Northway.Β By going up to the Green Mountains, it will be much shorter drive, and I expect it will be late enough by the time I get home and leave from there, that even if I take Hoosick Street, traffic will be modest. I also think I may head home on Sunday, due to the rain and cold weather that is expected — some models just show rain showers — but I think it will be more of an all day rain with a significant amount of precipitation. I might go for a short hike tomorrow back to Branch Pond and will enjoy two nights camping, and depending how bad it’s on Sunday come back home. Monday, ironically, looks quite beautiful. Maybe I’ll go hiking locally on Labor Day.

Last night I got packed, and then wired up an additional USB port on my truck cap shelf.Β While I already had plenty of USB ports for my truck cap, I wanted one that didn’t produce any light — especially not blue light — when sleeping at night. The one in switch panel is black lit and has a bright blue LED light that can’t be disconnected. Walmart sells these $10 USB/cigarette lighter ports, which work well, and the USB blue light in them is easily covered with tape. IΒ have one in the back Β of the truck cap, but I wanted one on the shelf. I wired it up, and should be good for charging my phone or any other equipment while camping.

Still need to get a few more supplies.Β I was going to make pizza this weekend, but I forgot those supplies. Maybe I won’t. I need to get lighter fluid, for the charcoal and to make starting the campfire easier (and much safer then gasoline). IΒ have firewood — the heated treated stuff I can lawfully bring across state lines, and I might be able to get a pallet at the place down that road, that had “FREE” sign on several of them this morning, assuming they aren’t taken by the time I get home. I like burning pallets, as they are free and heat-treated for pests (legal to bring across state lines) but I’ll make sure bring a magnet to pick of the nails and staples.

On this day in 1985, a joint American–French expedition locates the wreckage of the Titanic. It turns out that the big boat wasn’t just a movie but an actual sinking of a boat. So not fake news.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Autumn Begins when the sun will be setting at 6:51 pm with dusk at 7:19 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 82 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.
