33 Nights I Camped in 2022

This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.

Ultimately I camped 33 nights, which is about normal for me, though the trips were longer and closer to home.

My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.

Campsite 2

Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.

East Branch Sacandaga River

Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.

Swimming Hole Off Old Edick Road

Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.

Powley Campsite 10

The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.

Campfire

Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.

Finger Lakes Sunset

Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.

Morning view

Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.

Catskill Mountains

My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.

Cheese Hill Road

My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.

Taconics

The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.

Back camping at the same site tonight

The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.

Winter camping ?

Conclusions

I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

July 4, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ! Not the greatest morning ever to celebrate America’s birthday, kind of cloudy and damp. Now is a good time to count all ten fingers, to confirm all are there before you loose a few tonight. ๐Ÿคฒ  Next Sunday is World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ง. I don’t think that’s a pretty politically correct topic these days. Probably going to celebrate that occasion up north in the Adirondacks, as I am heading north on Friday I think after my eye appointment. Clouds, drizzle and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒง Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. The skies will clear around noontime. It would not have been a real nice holiday weekend up north.

Yesterday despite the drizzle, was super nice up at Thacher Park. ๐ŸŒง I think I liked it particularly because there wasn’t any crowds. If there wasn’t the free bus, I wouldn’t have gone, but I figured it was something to do and was free. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ I am always looking for low-cost and free things to do that don’t involve burning any gas, โ›ฝ because money is always so tight especially in the summer months. Plus I have to make that quarterly tax payment in two weeks. At least my cellphone bill is paid for next month, although I’m not happy about the reduced service plan I ended up deciding to get, to cut down my use.

Independence Day will have isolated showers. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 73 degrees at 5pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 23rd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 2pm. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 104 was set in 1911.

No big plans for today, โœ I might want to do some blogging, working on some data and some minor improvements to the blog and some research regarding the industrial solar facilities that are the newest form of sprawl inflicting our state. ๐Ÿ™ I also want to watch some of the videos I downloaded the other day and maybe go for a walk out to Five Rivers later if it gets nicer, and maybe do some more cleaning around in the apartment. No plans to drive anywhere today. ๐Ÿ“š I also want to get reading some of the library books I got on Friday at library.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.2° from the due south horizon (-0.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 15 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:56 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒ† , with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 15th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. Calm wind. Kind of a cool night to balance out for earlier in the week.  In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1982.

On this day in 1776, The United States Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Second Continental Congress. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Happy Birthday, America! Starting the day after Independence Day 1967, you would be able to FOIL the Federal Government, ๐ŸŽ† after U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Freedom of Information Act into law on July 4, 1966. Then citizens could request information on how much the federal government spent on fireworks the night before.

While this weekend was a stay in town weekend, ๐Ÿ• I am planning on heading to the Adirondacks after eye doctor’s appointment. ๐Ÿ‘€ It will be at least a three day weekend, although I might either take off Monday or maybe more likely work remote from Speculator on Monday and Tuesday, heading home Tuesday night and to the town meeting to speak out against even more development in the Albany Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ It would have been fun to head out of town this weekend, but it’s been so cold and rainy, and it would have been even cold weather.

As previously noted, next Sunday is World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ง when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:07 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid weather which was partly sunny with a few rain showers and temperatures between 90 and 74 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1936. I think that was right after I got back from the week I spent working remote from a very remote part of the Green Mountains.

Pride. It comes in all colors.

June 22, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday, Primary Day. At least in the big cities, there are no primaries locally in Bethlehem at least. All of the polling places are closed, confirming what I already knew. Four weeks to Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš. Rain and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

I was thinking it was one year ago today, ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ป that I was camping and doing remote work from Horsehoe Lake and Lows Lake in the Adirondacks. What a blast for sure, it was pretty wild. I don’t know why I haven’t done that again, although part of issue is that there is really only one campsite and also down by the lake that has really good internet up there, and it’s a long ways north — plus I kind of got busy doing other things with more in-person sessions in Albany. ๐ŸŽ‘ Those photos I took from Lows Ledge though a pretty amazing. Maybe I should do a real vacation up in Horseshoe again this year, and maybe even tent camp on Lows Lake. ๐Ÿ˜Ž A bit of a trip but it’s nice.

I didn’t get a real early start this morning with the clouds, ๐ŸŒฆ which meant by the time I was out walking, the rain was coming down. Really picked up about the time I got home, but that’s fine I got milk ๐Ÿฎ to and are taking a shower shortly. ๐Ÿšฟ The good news is today is a lot less humid then yesterday – it was really a dog day yesterday. ๐Ÿถ

I worked from home yesterday, ๐Ÿ˜… mainly because I didn’t want to face masking up in the heat and going into the air conditioned office. I put the big box fan right on me โ˜ข and worked at my computer for a while before laying back in bed with the fan and following email and hopping up to make calls. โ˜Ž๏ธ It really wasn’t a pleasant day, and I skipped my evening walk because it was so humid and nasty out. Just moving a lot made you sweat like a pig. ๐Ÿท I kind of wish I found a way to work from the Adirondacks yesterday, although it was pretty wet up there in Speculator yesterday, so I would have been huddled in my truck, trying to stay out of the rain.

Today will have showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 67 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 3rd. Maximum dew point of 58 at 8am. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 95 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1954.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.8° from the due south horizon (-0° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the northwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 28 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡

At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the south-southeast (148°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 226,522 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear โ˜, with a low of 48 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 16th. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 75 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1940.

I was glad I was able to quickly fix the bum connection ๐Ÿ”‹ on the exciter wire to main battery relay. It turned out it was the just the butt connector that I noticed was loose was bad, as soon as I cut it and found voltage, โœ‚๏ธ I was able to patch the cable together with a new butt connector as I left extra wire slack, and things were working again. โšก

Hot, humid with showers this weekend. ๐ŸŒฉ Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 70 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

I am thinking Saturday, catch the Nature Bus ๐ŸšŒ to Thacher Park, hike up to Thompson Lake, go for a brief swim, ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ do some nature observation, ๐Ÿฆ and then head back to Thacher Park and do some reading. Also, going to bring may back up battery for my phone ๐Ÿ”‹, so I don’t have to worry about charge, especially if I end up sitting by the escarpment doing some blogging or even watching a Youtube. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I figure it will be cool by escarpment. The following weekend — Independence Day Weekend — it will either be to the Adirondacks or maybe Schoharie backcountry to camp. But it might rain. Who knows. I do want to do a long weekend at the Potholers once it gets hot out again. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 87 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1991.

Along the Lake

June 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Four weeks to Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜…. That with the new climate normals is 85 degrees, although it will certainly be warmer than that today in Albany. Not quite as warm though in Spectulator. Sunny and 66 degrees in Speculator, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees. Going to be hot and muggy, though not as bad as back home where the shades are drawn.

Yesterday was a nice day ๐Ÿ– did some swimming at the Spectulator beach ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ after hiking back to the Kunjamunk Cave and the Kunjamunk Creek by the gravel permit although the increasingly high grass, likely filled with ticks, snowmobile trail didn’t lead me to Elm Lake, at least it did take me back to the road. I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด though after all that time in the sun โ˜€. Got ice cream ๐Ÿฆat the Sacandaga Creamery and ice and apple ๐Ÿ juice at Charlie John’s which I certainly needed with the heat.

Today will have isolated showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 84 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ Light west wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1999.

I am hoping to work entirely from camp today ๐Ÿ’ป although I’m fully prepared to head into town should a Zoom Meeting be called so I can use my laptop with the virtual background over the library Wi-Fi. Otherwise I’m content with using my phone for streaming video and the Hotspot and laptop for most other tasks. Going to be a late night at work but my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ should work good assisted by my laptop as necessary. I booted windows earlier this morning to ensure it was working.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:53 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 31 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 39 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an increase of 56 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy , with a low of 66 degrees at 3am. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10pm. West wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1951.

On this day in 1965, the Supreme Court of the United States hands down its decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, effectively legalizing the use of contraception by married couples.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, scattered showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 7pm. Sunday, scattered showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:41 pm with dusk at 9:17 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 92 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938.

 Blue Skies and Brilliant Tulips

June 4, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Friday! Up in the Adirondacks for a few days of camping and remote work ๐Ÿ’ป while Albany bakes in the heat wave, although I do have to be in Albany come Wednesday and maybe sooner depending on how things go. Six weeks to Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ†. Partly cloudy and 62 degrees in Speculator, NY. โ›… There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. While it was raining โ˜” when I left Albany it is super nice here, maybe a bit cold with the lake breeze there is a lot of sun and it’s quite nice up north. I kind of wish I brought my kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ but that gets difficult with remote work and needing sunshine to make solar energy so I can stay cool and my laptop charged.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. ๐ŸŒฉ It’s called summer. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 57 at 9am. Southwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1919. Probably not that warm in Spectulator, as that’s the Albany record.

I am planning to camp somewhere in the Greater Spectulator-area for the weekend, and then decide how long next week to stay up north. ๐Ÿ• The thing is on my remote days, it’s a lot cooler to work from the woods, but I will need to be back next week by Wednesday for my in-person days in the office. I figure it’s best to maximize remote work until we have to be back in the office more days of the week. Next week I have my therapy session ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ but the following week I will either go out Schoharie County or the Potholers if it’s nice, as it’s a three-day weekend with the new Juneteenth Holiday. If I do the Potholers, then I will definately want to bring the kayak, for either the East Branch or Lily Lake. By then maybe lillies will be out?

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 69° from the due south horizon (-1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 29 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 45 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 8 seconds over yesterday.

My fishing license is expired but I plan to renew it today, ๐ŸŽฃ so I can do some fishing tomorrow. I don’t have my kayak and it’s a few weeks before bass season opens up, but based on the number of anglers there was in Wells this morning, I probably should go down there to fish. That said, I am a bit tethered to Spectulator as I need I need to have good cell service and wi-fi to work, especially if I decide to stay up this way for the first half of next week.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, partly cloudy , with a low of 55 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 2am. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1990.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 80 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 1pm. Southwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1925.

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 83. West wind around 9 mph. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:41 pm with dusk at 9:16 pm. The average high temperature is 76 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1919.

Big Alderbed Mountain

June 1, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Suddenly it’s June ๐Ÿฎ ! Dairy month with all those cows eating delicious first cut hay and corn silage popping up out of ground, ๐ŸŒฑ Gay Pride month so hang your flag, ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ and Black Lives Matter month. โœŠ๐Ÿพ Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset. ๐ŸŒ‡ Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. A bit gray this morning, but it’s expected skies will clear around noontime.

I can’t believe that the we are starting out this morning so cloudy โ˜๏ธ, but I’m hopeful that we will see more sun โ˜€ later. At least it’s a nice enough of a morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. My laptop is fully charged so I can work out back later on when it’s gets nicer. Might as well work outside today as tomorrow and Thursday it’s back in the office ๐Ÿข. I don’t mind but I like the sunshine when I can get it.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1918.

Today I will work from home after my morning walk. I need to get groceries, ๐Ÿ‘œ contact solution, ๐Ÿ‘€ and some other supplies at lunch time so I want to head to Walmart today. I probably should get groceries for the weekend, although maybe I can get out on Thursday night after work. I will probably start packing for the weekend, ๐Ÿ’ผ as I might have to work late on Thursday night or end up over in the archives continuing to sort, pack and dry John Wolcott’s files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I plan to leave early Friday morning at this point to work remote from Lake Pleasant and camp up that way over the weekend. ๐Ÿ– Going to be a hot weekend and even hotter next week. While I could probably work remote on next Tuesday, I probably will come back Monday night after work so I have time to prepare for next week in office and Wednesday and Thursday and work from home on the following Tuesday.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:45 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 47 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. Light southwest wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Today I expect my Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š to arrive in the mail โœ‰. The old one I’ve had for six years now stopped charging ๐Ÿ”‹ and the battery life wasn’t great. I thought about trying to take it apart for parts or repair ๐Ÿ›  but opening the waterproof case will be a rather destructive process I fear and the result wouldn’t be great in a wet and muddy camp environment. I kind of think it would be fun to shoot ๐Ÿ”ซ it and then burn it but that rubber would stink to high heaven and I couldn’t salvage parts. I hope I got a good quality model, I researched it over a couple of days but I don’t know. Always hard to know which on line reviews are legit. As long as it’s loud enough to be heard over woods and road noise and the battery life is reasonable I’m good.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Maximum dew point of 66 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees. Yeah, that’s going to be a toasty one especially back in Albany. With that heat I’ll definitely want the screen tent not just to keep cool but control the bugs. Thinking of doing some swimming in Speculator and maybe some fishing. ๐ŸŽฃ I thought about going to the Green Mountains but I like being closer to WI-FI should something come up, and I prefer to do my Friday meeting using the laptop rather then the phone, especially when I’m away from home with the virtual background.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 81 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2011. It is quite possible we break that record this year, it seems like the dog days of summer will be coming early this year.

 Bourne And Grout Pond

May 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . The unofficial end of black fly season, although I tend to think they’re around until July 4th, although come late June it’s mostly mosquitos then July comes around and things aren’t so bad. Rain and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I wanted to walk around to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ this morning before the rain, but it’s already raining and I did not get up early enough apparently. ๐Ÿ˜ด I’ve been bad this weekend about getting started, after getting up at 6:30 AM each day last week, so I could go for my morning walk before heading downtown on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Memorial Day Weekend will continue to be cold, damp and rainy but the skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm in time for picnics, although you’ll definitely want a long sleeve shirt. ๐ŸŒญ ๐Ÿ”

Today will rain, mainly after 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 50 degrees at 4pm. 25 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. North wind around 9 mph. It’s already become a very wet day, and it looks like it only will get wetter. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

Yesterday, I was over at the apartment where they are storing the recovered documents for John Wolcott. ๐Ÿ“œ Didn’t find a lot of interesting things, more papers and photos, mostly personal stuff. Important for him, but it wasn’t a lot of great historic value we found yesterday. But I’ve been mostly looking through photos that we’ve been saving by soaking, separating, and drying. ๐Ÿ–ผ ๐Ÿ‘ƒ At least the files don’t stink as much yet, although we are starting to run the clock with the damp weather ๐Ÿ’ฆ and mildew starting to grow on the wet documents. I’m going to head back there later today.

I was worried that the Fairchild Aerial Photos of Albany Pine Bush in the 1920s were misplaced, but Lynne was able to find them. I really want to get a high resolution scan of them, maybe because I’m a bit biased towards them with my love old aerial photos. ๐ŸŒฒ But they can also really tell a story about the Albany Pine Bush and world long gone. The USGS photos taken in the early to mid-1950s for stereographic mapping of the land for topographic maps is great, but it’s from the 1950s, and a lot of land use change occurred earlier then the 1950s in Pine Bush. ๐Ÿ”

While I should have done this a long time ago, ๐Ÿ“ธ I finally took high resolution photos of my guns and their serial numbers, along with various diplomas and certification documents including my truck title an birth certificate, ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŽ“ and family photos, and put them in an encrypted file both on my laptop and for off-site storage. Just with my ordinary camera. ๐Ÿ“„ This way I figure if I am ever a victim of a natural disaster, be it fire, riot, tornado, flood, I’ll have my photos and important documents backed up, with all the numbers and key information. ๐Ÿ’พ Sure, I’ll probably have to get a new copy of my birth certificate, et. certera at some point but when you have the information it’s easier to get. Data storage is cheap, and while I don’t do the whole cloud thing, โ˜๏ธ off-site is important in case the building I live in is destroyed or my laptop is stolen or damaged. ๐Ÿ”ซ Likewise, with the guns it’s a lot easier to file a police report if you have the serial numbers and photos. Salvaging all those charred documents ๐Ÿ”ฅ really makes me want to be a lot more careful at backing up everything. Plus I’ve purged a ton of paper documents that aren’t relevant anymore. ๐Ÿ—‘ I need to tackle the crawl space and get rid of some worn out clothes and other things this summer. ๐Ÿ‘š โ™ป๏ธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (-1.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly before 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day will have a chance of rain before 7am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. ๐ŸŒฆ Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

I had higher hopes about Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ but it seems like the bad weather will continue until Tuesday when it will get nice. I can work from home on Tuesday, and while I have to work in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, I’m thinking of working from the Speculator area on Friday and Monday, just because there is that great library there and decent places to camp in the area. ๐Ÿ• I am going to hold off on the Potholers for this weekend, although looks plenty warm. I could go for a swim at Speculator Beach.  ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Not sure if I will bring my kayak — my initial feeling is no to that, because I will need the solar power to work. ๐Ÿ›ถ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold but otherwise partly sunny day and temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892. Back before my time, and I suspect yours too.
