Weather Update – August 15, 2022

I think hope of the drought ending soon isn’t in this week’s forecast πŸ€”

At least not so hot this week with ample sunshine. Maybe it’s a chance to get better at getting my steps in every day. I just feel better, less achy and more energetic when I walk.

It looks like it will be a decent weekend to get out of town, maybe the last chance to spend a Saturday totally off the grid until November. No emails or work one day would be nice.

Labor Day Weekend I might head up to the Spectulator area but it would be a working trip as I’m sure I’ll be busy. Might want to hike up Pillsbury Mountain Labor Day Saturday after dark to see the fire towers all lit up.

Looking below at the chart, you can see how much daylight we are losing in the plunge. But as God takes away, come April and May he will bring it back along with a ton of black flies.

Daily Update – April 1, 2022

Good morning! Happy Trout Season 🎣

River levels have to be raging after last night’s rain. But trout season isn’t a one day affair and indeed it’s April so don’t be fooled.

After last night’s heavy rain, just cloudy ☁️and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

It wouldn’t be a bad day for fishing 🎣 if not for the high water levels and the fact that I have to work today. Friday often is the busiest day of the year where I work. 🏒 That said most of this week has been a bit of a busy week. I guess it makes up for all of the downtime earlier on.

Last night I got home around 6 🏑 had a quick dinner 🍲 but the rain arrived before I could go for my evening walk. So I sat on the tailgate of my pick up πŸ›» and watched the rain come in before it really started to pour. Then I retired to bed around seven 7⃣. I was tired as I keep waking up earlier and earlier. I honestly thought πŸ’ it was going to be a much longer night at work.

Definitely a good rain storm last night 🌧️, probably good for a few inches of rain and lots of sewer overflows in the cities. We ended up with above average precipitation for the month of March due to the rain.

I thought about going out to Rennselearville to fish and camp over night this weekend but water levels are high, going to be windy and very sunny on Saturday. β˜€ Plus I’m thinking of going up north or maybe to Central NY either thr following weekend or maybe Easter Weekend. β›Ί

It might be another stay at home 🏑 weekend. Probably too cold to paint Big Red but that’s fine. I get tired from the work week and like to rest on Saturday. Then maybe take a walk out to Five Rivers. 🐦 Then maybe finish up my home work for the GIS class down at the library. πŸ“š

I was thinking about going to the transfer station β™» to drop off cans πŸ₯« and bottles but I might wait as I’m the about seeing if there is some garbage or e-waste that I can purge. I haven’t taken anything to the transfer station as garbage on about ten years, preferring to burn or recycle most of it with an occasional gas station garbage can. But you sometimes end up with things like broken metal chairs or a broken snow shovel that don’t fit into any of those categories nicely. It’s nice when you don’t generate much garbage but you end up with a lot of broken shit. πŸ—‘

Been researching Park and Ride lots in Schenectady and bus schedules 🚍 as that might be a convenient alternative to facing rush hour traffic getting out of the city when heading up to the Adirondacks this summer. There is that CDTA 531 express to Saint Lukes and Woodlawn Park and Ride plus the limited stop CDTA 905. 🚏I hate driving the Thruway at rush hour and while I would have to get an earlier start, most of the traffic would be going the opposite way plus I wouldn’t have to find street parking in Albany. Another possibility I saw was that CDTA is taking over or at least chartering Brown’s Amsterdam routes so I might be able to even park there. πŸ…Ώ

I don’t know about you but I’m glad April has returned. 🌷 The greening up of things is always nice as is getting out of town β›Ί and sleeping 😴 with the windows open πŸ”³. I’m sure with the rain last night and the relatively mild forecast for the week ahead it should accelerate the rate spring arrives. As much as I hate the black flies it’s nice to have nights in the wilderness by the fire with a cold beer πŸ”₯. And I’m really looking forward to laying in a lazy river with that big black truck intertube. ⚫

Good Morning – December 6, 2021

Good morning! It’s a Rainy Monday. 🌧

Going to be a warm day, already is. Maybe the fifties later, although by mid-week we might get some snow, though not too much. But usually when we have days in December in fifties, it is rain.

Rain showers and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a south breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ Snow showers maybe mid-day Wednesday, but it looks like I will dodge the bullet on the day Big Red is getting his new tires.

Right now it’s not pouring out, πŸŒ‚ but I am certainly planning on bringing my umbrella to work today, as it might be wet by later. It’s a dress up day for work, as clients are in town, but I am hoping it’s not so wet I can’t just wear my regular dress shoes and skip the boots heading into the office today. Winter is coming and there will be plenty of time to wear the boots. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’Ό

I have a bit of an upset stomach today, 😣 but that is normal for me on a Monday. There is so no such thing as feeling cheery before a 5 day work week, although maybe I’ll decide to take off a day some point in the week, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Today I am going to once again reschedule Big Red’s inspection, πŸ” this time for Friday, in hope of getting Red back on the road for the weekend. That said, it’s going to rain this weekend, so I’m not hopeful about getting out of town this weekend, but it far enough off, things could change. 🚘 Remember for a while, they were talking about a big snow storm the day Red was getting his tires put on.

Yesterday, I installed the Waffle R package on my computer, 🍱 so I will probably post some pretty waffle graphs on my blog. It seems like Waffle charts are very popular these days, probably for good reason.

I am thinking about walking down to CVS and getting my COVID-19 booster tonight. πŸ’‰ That way I can do my evening walk and get the protection of the booster before they run out of supply. I was told that I don’t need to bring anything, at CVS they have my health insurance card on file. I should look back at my blog and see when I got my first shot in case they ask. Of course if it’s raining maybe tomorrow. That said, it would be a whole lot easier if I could get it at the Empire State Plaza Concourse.

Good Morning – October 18, 2021

Good morning! Another dark Monday morning as we head into work week. πŸŒ„

Always the mornings are dark this time of year, with the sunrise this morning not until 7:02 AM. It’s even worse as you get closer to the time change. But then we get more time in the morning but then the evenings are dark. It’s called autumn, then winter starts and slowly but surely we start to get more light as summer approaches and everything is thrown in reverse. See the chart I posted last night for detail.

Mostly cloudy, cool and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. πŸŒ₯ Calm wind. I left one window open last night but the rest are closed because it was kind of a cool night. I will open things up again though before heading out for the fresh air though.

The bus is running on time 🚍 which is a good thing, although I’ve not had many problems with the 519 being particularly late. I’ve heard the earlier bus though is always very late. The right lane is closed getting onto Interstate 787 but traffic is moving well.

Out on the Plaza this morning I see they are draining the reflecting pool. πŸ¦† The ducks don’t look very happy about the fact but it’s obvious that they are preparing the ice skating β›Έ rink for winter. ❄ It’s been such a mild autumn season, often by now the ponds are drained.

Finally got my sheets washed πŸ›Œ, something that had been on my bucket list for a while but had been becoming increasingly dirty and smelly. πŸ‘ƒ That said, I take a shower each morning before going to work, so not a big deal. At some point I need to get to the laundromat and do my comforter too. Been a while since I last washed that.

Also, I need to go shopping tonight, πŸ₯ž as I’m out of pancake mix and other supplies. I also need gasoline β›½ as the tank in my truck is very low. Gas is so expensive these days, although compared to the historical record, I guess not that bad. Has to be bad news πŸ“° for the incumbent in the White House though.

I would like to get out of town this weekend, πŸ• but it all depends on the weather. I doubt I’ll do West Virginia or Pennsylvania this weekend but I’m thinking about Madison County, maybe Stoney Pond and Cazenovia if it’s nice enough. Honestly, I don’t want to work a five day week and things are still kind of slow in the office 🏒 although things are picking up a bit with the new year coming soon.

I saw one of kids I went to high school got himself some bacon seeds. 🐷 πŸ₯“ Lucky him. He’s been busy building a pretty nice homestead out in rural Rennselear County. Good for him. He’s a professional firefighters and he’s building a good life for him out in the country country.

Good Morning – October 4, 2021

Good morning! Happy Last Sunset After 6:30 PM πŸŒ† !

On a rainy morning it’s particularly dark but then again the evenings are also pretty dark. Winter is coming. But first a Monday. My goal is to make it to work on time and duck everything up as I stumble around.

Rain showers and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. More rain later.

It looks like I might be able to walk down to the express bus without getting soaked 🌧 assuming the rain hold off until I get to the office. For a while during the overnight hours it was absolutely pouring. But it at least wasn’t cold with the windows open. I refuse to close my windows at night, as I like the fresh air ⬜ although some mornings lately have been rather cold as the mercury has fallen into the upper 30s by morning a few days last week. But I sleep so much better with the windows open.

This was kind of a stay at home weekend, the highlight of the weekend was going to the grocery store 🍊 so that I had food in my pantry. Spent a lot of the weekend reading and learning, studying up on using Python for making graphs and charts, along with maps and GIS things. I did go for the evening walk on Saturday and down to the library, but Sunday rained a lot so I spent my focus on learning as much as I could. πŸ‘©β€πŸ« A lot of Saturday wasn’t bad, but my gas tank is relatively empty, β›½ and I don’t have any money, so that’s kind of a problem especially if Big Red’s suspension is getting fixed in two weeks and I’m spending $3,000 on tires and repairs for my truck this month. πŸ’Έ I don’t know what the alternative is — it’s a bad time to buy a new truck, and it’s not like my truck is that old, having less then 100,000 miles — and I’m not quite ready yet to give up motoring, although I do less and less of that lately. I just know that every time you get in your car, 🚘 it’s like smoking a cigarette 🚬, slowly killing yourself assuming you don’t crash and the environment one toke at a time, says the boy with the big jacked up truck who burns his trash rather then recycling. πŸ”₯

After reading that book on personal finance, πŸ“• and crunching the numbers πŸ“ I think I am going to get away from saving much more in CDs and high-interest savings, and move towards bonds to balance my portfolio. Not planning any big bond purchases in the short term, until at least my CD expires and the markets go back up — better to buy bonds when the stock market is strong as it depresses bond prices — but I think I will replace a big portion of my ordinary paycheck-to-paycheck FDIC savings with bond fund purchases, as I think that’s a better idea on the long haul, and I have too much put into savings with so little interest these days. Plus, I will roll back the rate on savings, but I am lately just struggling so much to pay the bills lately. πŸ“„ It just seems like everything is going up in price lately.

I am really trying to master the Python graphing and mapping πŸ—Ί libraries, as I think being able to make quality graphics and maps on the fly is such an important skill to master – along with being able to process and make maps. I’m pretty good but there are still skills I could get better at. πŸ–₯ It’s not about being a computer geek but just being able to effectively promote and manipulate data.

Good Morning – September 17, 2021

Good morning! Happy Constitution Day πŸ“œ !

I heard the constitution is a good source of carbon to tie down the nitrogen and smell from urine and manure in a hog yard. And confounding politicians of the opposite political party and their poorly thought out plans.

Overcast and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 62 degrees. The skies will clear around 5 pm.

Kind of a muggy morning 😰 but at the same time it just has a very mid September feel to it today. Out for the morning walk 🚢 as I try to get to the 10,000 step goal πŸ₯… which turns out to be remarkably hard to despite all the walking I do. The air has the taste of rubber on it, maybe I some butyl leaking out of the plastics plant down the road. ☠️

Traffic hasn’t been so bad around the High School lately 🚸 although it certainly helps when I get a later start. At least there are fewer idling cars 🚘 most days but crossing the driveway on the crosswalk by the high school is a bit dangerous.

I am glad it’s a Friday ☺ as it’s been a long week as I’m out used to working downtown five days a week with the bus 🚍 and everything else. But in some ways the consistency of it is kind it is kind of nice, as is not being home all of the time. πŸ’³

Tonight I’ll run to the store and get some supplies πŸ” and get packed so I can leave early in the morning for the Adirondacks β›°. I haven’t asked for Monday and Tuesday off but I have no meetings scheduled and I can hand my duties off to some other people or get caught up on Wednesday. I have the time, I should take both days off – pushing my autumn trip off a few weeks means I’ll accumulate more vacation time by the time I take off that week in late October or early November. β›Ί

I’ve working updating the graphing code on the blog πŸ“Š to work with Chartjs 3.5 as I’m still using the 1.x version. I wrote a wrapper around the old code but I want to be generating 3.5 code for future graphs so that it’s more future compatible and I can do more gradients on the graphs.
