Hays Brook Horse Trails
North of Mountain Pond in Paul Smiths is an old routing of NY 30 and several old fire protection roads that are used today for hiking, horseback riding, and accessing backcountry hunting locations. Known as the Hays Brook Horse Trails, there is a small parking area along Mountain Pond Road (Old Route 30), along with a falling apart wooden sign indicating the trail head.

The Inman Pond Trail is a 1 1/2 mile hike back with a 200 foot ascent to a 5 acre remote lake between the mountains, below Buck Mountain and Lake George on the other side.There are three designated campsites along the shoreline.

Pole Hill Pond Trail
Pole Hill Pond is a popular hiking and cross-country ski trail to the west of Tongue Mountain. The trail back to Poll Hill Pond is 2 miles long. The full loop is 6 miles, crossing several unamed hills.

Dexter Lake – Spectacle Lake – Waters Millpond
Yesterday, I hiked back to Dexter Lake, Spectacle Lake and Water Millspond in Ferris Lake Wild Forest, off of Hall Road and Seeley Road (which is off of Piseco-Powley Road). I could have driven Hall Road, it's not rough and there was plenty of parking as I was the only one there, but I often prefer to walk remote mountain roads to look at wildlife without having to worry about tripping on rocks.
It was about 15 miles round trip, via Hall Road - Dexter Lake Trail - Burnt Vly Trail - Water Millpond Loop, but it was well worth it as it was remote wilderness with many scenic views, including North Creek Falls which is rarely visited. I didn't see a single other person hiking for 5 hours.
Black Mountain
Black Mountain is a three mile hike from Pike Brook Road via a snowmobile trail. The snowmobile trail is a nice hike or ski and follows an old woods road to the summit. The summit contains an old firetower this is fenced off for DEC radio equipment, along with a picnic table, outhouse, and old ranger's cabin.
If you take the steeper trail down the mountain you will arrive at Black Mountain Pond with a Lean-To and Outhouse, and loop around to Lapland Pond, an older lean-to and outhouse on the shore of the lake. Trail blaze color underlays the trail routes on the map.
Fishbrook Pond
Here is a map of Fishbrook Pond, as accessed via trails around Dacy Clearing Road. Fishbrook Pond is 33 acres with a lean-to and picnic area. On the way there is Sleeping Beauty Mountain along with several campsites and other facilities.
