That moon to rising at nine o’clock essentially over South Hill in Ithaca last night was amazing. 🌕
Maybe we are day past the official full moon but turning onto Potomac Road from Searsburg Road, the moon rise was most impressive and so large looming over the pasture lands. Not sure if it’s a super moon but it certainly was super from the angle I was viewing it high from the Hector Backbone looking down towards Cayuga Lake.

Long day yesterday, I didn’t get back to camp ⛺ until nearly 9:15 pm as I was in Geneva until after 8 pm and stopped in search of clams, Greek yogurt and milk at Tops in Waterloo. 🏪 But still the sunset is pretty late in the Finger Lakes but by the time I was past Ovid heading into Lodi it was definitely approaching dusk. 🌆 That said the open landscape helped a lot keeping things from being too dark as I drove back to camp. But regardless I was tired 😴. I was so fortunate to see last night’s moon rise.
Rode from Seneca Lake to Kueka Lake yesterday via the Kueka Outlet Trail. 🚲 Touched both lakes with the wheel of my bicycle. It’s a lot quicker of a ride then when I walked it. Poked around Dresden and Penn Yan for a while 🏫 I was very impressed with the Downtown on Penn Yann, it was largely untouched by urban renewal 🏗️ and still had many vibrant small businesses and shops. 🍬
I ended up driving 🚘 back to Penn Yan after getting Frozen Custard 🍦at the Spotted Duck 🦆 because I decided I had to visit the Penn Yan old fashioned bulk candy shop. I was going to get fudge but ended up getting black chocolate 🍫 peanut 🥜 brittle that I’m saving for a future day. That place is a throwback not many places like that anymore, especially on Main Street. Reminded me of the old Blue Churn in South Westerlo I used to go to as a kid before it burned down. Spotted duck blueberry Blue Fluer custard was good, the Carmelt caramel custard was amazing. 🍦 Maybe it’s vacation FOMO but who knows when I’ll ever get back to Penn Yan again.
The ice cream was wonderful 🍦 and the two scoups – duck egg 🥚 sized each, wasn’t too much but the sugar fueled a full out anxiety attack in my mind and kept me roaring with crazy 🤪 energy well into the evening though by 11 pm enough sugar burned off I was okay. Truth is I’ve been having a wonderful vacation ☺ but every time I consume any quantity of non natural sugar I get so sick 🤮. But I’ll probably get a small ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar again tonight and remember the crazy thoughts in my head are just that. But not a mega large dish 🍨like on Sunday. Go for the quality not the portion. I don’t know if it’s my fear 😱 of the calories and getting fat, knowing how bad sugar is for you, or something else but my mental health is so much better the farther I stay away from added sugar. I’m fine eating delicious fruit all day long 🍇 🍏 🍑 but give me ice cream and a few minutes later I’m super wound up.
With all that energy, I drove up to Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, 🏊♂️ hoping to get a swim in the lake and a shower 🚿 the later I did but I had forgotten they a few years back had replaced the life guarded beach 🏖 with a kids splash pad due to the pollution on the lake from blue green algea. Hell of it is, this part of state has been cool and relatively dry so not a lot of water pollution this year compared to many years. But I also wangtted to do the Cayuga – Seneca Bike Path 🚲 from Geneva to Waterloo, as much to say I did it. And to use time up. 🌽 Not a lot of exciting view along it, some view of both the Old Erie Canal and the modern barge canal, lot of marshland, corn and soybean fields. Poked around Waterloo for a while 🇺🇸 and visited the Civil War monument. 🦳 Ended up going to Tops in Waterloo on Mound Road, you know the one next to Seneca Meadows landfill and getting milk, plain non fat yogurt not Greek as they’re out, and a small two servings bag of salmon. Made it back to camp by nine o’clock, wasn’t super dark out at that point and had a fire 🔥 until eleven.

Honest, I’m trying to do better on the sleep thing. I was asleep by 10 pm last night, after I drove home from Cayuga Lake in Ithaca it was straight to bed. Plus I wanted to get started early today, as I plan to head to Dresden then bike to Penn Yann on the Kueka Outlet Rail Trail, poke around Penn Yann for a while. Then maybe Sugar Hill then Watkins Glen pool. Like if I have time, lol. Or whatever hits my fancy, I will need to get a few groceries later.

Decided to set my alarm ⏰ to catch the sunrise but by the time I made it to Searsburg Road I saw the sun had partially beat me. Regardless I got close to eight 8⃣ hours of solid sleep 😴 last night and the sun was just starting over the horizon. Still a good early start to the morning. Lots of coffee ☕ this morning plus cream of wheat with chea seeds for added fiber 🌱, some lemon 🍋 and stevia for sweetness plus walnuts and non fat Greek yogurt. Yum.

Busy day yesterday, 🚲 starting at Stewart Park 🏞 heading up to Ithaca Falls and spending the bulk of the day exploring the gorge through the historic Forest Home 🏡 and Beebe Pond 🦆 and then ultimately spending many hours in the Cornell Botanical Gardens. Hell of it is I ended up riding past the dairy bar and it was still open 🥤 but I didn’t realize until I was past it. The ride down Buffalo Street 🐃 in Ithaca was a blast, my bike rotators were so hot from the braking. University 🎓 Ave over Canachilla Creek didn’t offer much in views but riding along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail from NY 96 to the end at other end of Stewart Park was nice. Those suspension bridges 🌉 the trail crosses are neat, and the size of the Ithaca Farmers market building is impressive. I wonder when they are open, I could stop by and stock up. And the sunset 🌇 was great.

It’s now just coasting to the weekend, or so I tell myself. The hill has been climbed, now it’s just coasting to five o’clock. And next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, which the black flies want you to know is a three day weekend.
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly sunny and 48 degrees ☀ in Delmar for the morning walk. There is a south breeze at 11 mph. 🍃.
I hear that summer is coming 🏖 though lately there has been very little evidence of that lately. That said, things may get warmer for the Memorial Day Weekend though not by much. When summer finally arrives though I’m betting it will get hot.
I was thinking 💭 about eggs this morning 🥚 as I had too many carbs yesterday but I think with time limitations 🥣 and because I want eggs tomorrow I’m going to reheat the remaining barley and quinoa I have cooked in the refrigerator and serve with blackberries and cherries 🍒 this morning. 🥣 May add a little honey 🍯 just because otherwise the quiona is too bitter. Then some carrots 🥕. Tomorrow eggs 🍳 I’m thinking. I’ll make sure to limit carbs at lunch and dinner. Maybe I’ll crack open that other can of mackerel 🐠 or tuna with dinner and serve with kale to boost my omega 3 levels and vitamin absorption. Also need to use up more of the peppers 🫑🌶️ in the refrigerator they’re getting dried out a bit. I do make frozen spinach and especially kale 🥗 too big of a portion of my diet but it’s easy and cheap source of healthy fiber though I do need to mix it up more. Overdoing kale is better than overdosing on sugars and fats I tell myself.

I wasn’t going to head out of town for the holiday weekend ⛺ but with the warming trend and potentially sunny hot weather, I could be persuaded elsewise. 🤷♂️ Hammock Camping is more likely but I could consider the Spectulator area especially if I have to spend part of the week remote working. 💻 That said I don’t like the black flies and summer isn’t that far away. I’d still almost prefer though to wait for the following week when work is less and the woods is quieter. 🌲🌲But sometimes plans change.
I’m back to thinking 💭 about the Finger Lakes National Forest for summer vacation 🏊♂️ mostly because I’m thinking of all the trails and flat land up on the hump between the lakes for bicycle 🚲 riding. Plus lots of opportunities to fish 🎣 and the ease of setting up camp ⛺ for the week and nearby groceries at Watkins Glen. 🍏 It was fun paddling Seneca Lake on calmer days. 🛶 And doing the Black River Valley to camp and hunt come the autumn rather than West Virginia.
One month 📅 from now the Average High is 80 when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. Basically almost summer at that point, I should spend it at the House Pond campsite. ⛺
I have to say this has been the best vacation in my life ⛺ 🚵 🍦 🏊 🛶
The weather has been absolutely fantastic, my days packed with adventures and cold ice cream and swimming holes. I’ve ridden like 250 miles through farm and forest land. Many nights with campfires, watermelon cold beer and fresh squeezed lemonade. Dinners with Vadellia onions and peppers, lemon pepper chicken and salmon, beer boiled clams with sweet corn, zucchini and tons of fresh fruit with Greek yogurt. Many amazing sunrises and sunsets. Just not nearly enough hours in the day.
Good morning! Happy Sunday. I do know what this means, after 10 days all good things must come to an end. 😔 Don’t look so sad, life goes on this world keeps turning. Summer 2024 is but a few winks 😉 of the eye away, as is a long weekend trip up to the Potholers maybe next weekend or in two weeks. Then maybe an extended Labor Day Weekend at Spectulator Tree Farm to close out the summer. Except for the hammock, flags, bucket shitter and the kayak on the roof of the truck my home for nine short nights has been taken down. 🛶
Stunningly beautiful morning like so many this past week. Mostly sunny and 68 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ☀ There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 57 degrees. I heard the seven o’clock chime 🎐 on my phone and it was followed by the eight, nine and ten o’clock chimes on my phone about five minutes later as I took down camp, carefully packing things for the return trip to Albany.
This morning was a delightful breakfast 🥣 of cream of wheat, freshly squeezed lemon, a bit of stevia to make it sweet plus chia seeds 🌱 for fiber and the remaining Greek yogurt I had so it wouldn’t go bad without ice. I also had the last hard boiled egg 🥚 a little while after for additional protein and as I wasn’t sure if it would survive to mid day without any more ice in the cooler. Plus two cups of cold black coffee ☕ not that I really needed it as I made sure to get my eight hours of sleep yesterday for the long drive home.

I told myself that I should leave Ithaca by 4 pm to ensure my arrival home by 7 pm, 🏡 well before dark and so I have time to unpack and run to the laundromat and grocery store before bed 🛏 at 9 pm. I’d like to get back into the habit of rising at 6 am for the morning walk 🚶 and to bed nightly at nine, as I find that’s the most natural sleep pattern for me. Of course if I ride my bike 🚲 to work I can get a later start as I won’t need to do a morning walk before catching the express downtown. 🚍 Do plan to resume doing the stairs to the 18th floor twice a day at work 🏢 at least when I’m working downtown for that extra push of intensive cardio each day. Truth be told, I really should plan on leaving Ithaca at 3 pm knowing I’ll inevitably be running late, 🏃 stopping at farm stands 🌽 and pee breaks 🚻, parks and scenic vistas. 📸

Yesterday I mountain biked 🚵 riding both gravel and trails at Sugar Hill State Forest. Posted many pictures to Facebook some on the blog. About a fifteen mile loop. Swam at Watkins Glen pool 🏊♂️ but didn’t ultimately go floating on my tube ⭕ on Seneca Lake as it was too cool and the lake choppy 🌊 by afternoon. Rode another ten miles down Rock Cabin Road, 🚲 along old Airport Road at Catharine Valley WMA, then down to Montour Falls. Rode over to Glen Dairy Bar 🍧 via the Catharine Valley Trail and the Watkins Glen High School 🚸 and had a great hot apple pie 🥧 sundae with vanilla soft ice cream. Rode over to the Watkins Glen Pier and watched the sun set ⛵ and then through Clute Park 🏞 back to my truck and back to camp by nine. Dinner was sweet corn 🌽, peppers and peaches 🍑 that I got at the Burdett Exchange 💱 along with a hard boiled egg 🥚. Night rode over to Foster Pond, sat and looked at the stars ✨ for a while but didn’t see any shooting stars but I didn’t stay that long as it was chilly and I wanted to get back to camp ⛺ as it was after 10:30 PM for a small campfire to warm up 🔥 before lights out.
Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise 🌇 when the sun will be setting at 7:27 pm with dusk at 7:54 pm. Friday, I might stay in camp or just do the short drive over to the Queen’s Castle 🏰 on the lake which is a free National Forest Boat Camp Ground on a point on Seneca Lake that is nice to just sit down by and Ride my bike around the National Forest and read. 📖
Weekend looks nice TBD, probably Ithaca on Sunday – maybe Robert Treman or kayak 🛶 Cayuga Lake around the canal and Ithaca area. Saturday who knows, maybe Sugar Hill bike and hike then Watkins Glen pool.

When the ice cream makes you sick 🍨😔
Getting those large maple walnut sundaes at the Glen Dairy Bar is quite a tradition for me. But maybe not so much in my forties. All that sugar made me feel so sick and kept me up half the night. I might get ice cream later in the week but it won’t be a large portion for sure! I still feel kind of sick today from all that sugar. Soft ice cream has so much.
Good morning! Where did July go? Lost to vacationland I guess. Today is Ithaca day, exploring the city and the gorges on my bicycle. Beautiful day, partly sunny and 72 degrees at the Cass Park 🏞 on Cayuga Lake. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 58 degrees. Big day ahead. Monday, Monday on vacation. 🏖 It really doesn’t seem too bad.
As I noted, Today is Ithaca Day, that is I plan to do Ithaca is Gorges. Start out at Stewart Park 🏞 this time starting closer to 9 am then 11:30 am. I need to stop and get ice on the way back to camp, the Enfield Dandy’s should be good for that. Mostly for the coolers but I’ll also fill one of the water bottles with ice so as it melts down in the evening I can use it for lemonade with Stevia. 🍋
I don’t have cell service up at camp so I’ve been slow at uploading photos to the blog 📸 as it requires a lot of data, and even when I bike or hike where I have good service 📶 it seems like it’s still pretty weak up on the backbone and in parts of Watkins Glen. Ithaca today I should have better service but too much blogging 📝 takes time away from adventures. 🧗♂️ Ain’t got no time for that!

That sugar from the ice cream was so bad. 🤮 I thought I was going to have the runs all night spraying poop 💩 off the tailgate of my pickup, having to shovel it come the morning. Wasn’t that bad but I was bouncing off the walls well after midnight, riding the Forest Service roads after dark on my mountain bike 🚵,, hanging out at Foster Pond well into the moonlit hours of Monday early hours with no desire to sleep. Sugar is a narcotic when your not used to eating it. Hell of it was I was still a bit hungry when I got back to camp but frying up an onion 🧅 with some fresh spinach more than filled me up fine. No alcohol yesterday, and only other thing I eat all day was a banana 🍌 or two, the remainder of pancake 🥞 mix and sausage I had bought last winter. But they’re done now and I’m done with that chapter of my life in the thirties. I’m forty now.

This morning I avoided anything with sugar and instead fried up spring onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers with a bunch of spinach and an egg or two. 🍳 Added some parm cheese 🧀 and MSG plus pepper. It was good. No desire for anything sweet at this point. 🤮 My stomach still is rumbling from the sugar. I also hard boiled eggs 🥚 for protein later. Probably eat dinner on the run this evening.
Swimming 🏊 in Cayuta Lake at Taughannock, Buttermilk Falls swimming and Enfield Glen swimming are open until seven. That is after exploring the Casacadilla Glen at Cornell University and other bike 🚲 paths and trails in the city. Figuring a light snacky dinner when I get back, probably sugar free syrup plus kidney beans, or maybe I’ll cut into the watermelon 🍉 I got on Friday. That should be good but I know as soon as I cut into the watermelon the clock will be ticking ⏳and I’ll be eating a lot of water melon. Just like if I get clams 🦪 later in the week. Eat eat eat! Just hopefully not get sick like all that ice cream.

Yesterday besides my adventures in eating and ice cream sickness it was a busy day, bicycled 🚲 30 miles, hiked 4 ½, 🚶 swam for about a half hour. 🏊♂️ Did all of the Catharine Valley Trail from Watkins Glen to Montour Falls to the end outside of Horsesheads in Pine Valley at the Mark Twain Golf Course ⛳. Rode in the evening along Rock Dam Road, you can really fly down there on a mountain bike. 🚵 Then along Airport Road 🛬 at the Catharine Valley WMA to Boat 🛥 Launch Lane, then over through the village to the Watkins Glen pier on Seneca Lake. Walked out on the pier, it was colorful evening 🌃 but the sunset was kind of blocked by clouds that came in late. Went back through Clute Park then rode back to my truck around dusk disappointed by the lack of a classic sunset. On the whole it was a beautiful day!
Going to close out vacation next weekend with good swimming weather. 🏊♂️ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 66 at 11am. Maybe paddle Seneca Lake then swim at the Watkins Glen pool. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Maximum dew point of 64 at 11am. Swimming in Cayuga Lake? Then head home around 4 pm or so to be home by dark? 🏡 That’s a long way off, no need to think about it. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.
Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until World Mosquito Day 🐞 when the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm with dusk at 8:28 pm. Bugs seem worse this year then normal but no so bad now that the front came through and cooler. On that day in 2022, we had hot, partly sunny and temperatures between 88 and 70 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1916.
