Roughly $2.5 million allocated for the National Park Service will be diverted to fund President Donald Trump's "Salute to America" Fourth of July celebration, two unnamed sources familiar with the matter said, according to a Washington Post report published Tuesday. The funds were reportedly diverted from entrance and recreation fees generated by the National Park Service. Denis Galvin, a former Park Service deputy director, told The Post that the Fourth of July celebrations at the National Mall in Washington, DC, normally cost the Park Service around $2 million.

We should think about permanently removing infrastructure and roads in the national parks, managing them more as wilderness and managed forest rather than developed recreational lands. National parks are too costly, too environmentally destructive and give a false impression of the natural lands they protect. I believe we should make national parks wild again.

Fees To Enter Popular National Parks Would Skyrocket Under Interior Department Plan

I don't think there should be any fees for parks. After all, we don't charge fees to use the public libraries. Certainly doubling fees at national parks is the wrong way to go. Why not tap the billions the Department of Interior is bringing in on off-shore leases and Bureau of Land Management Lands from fossil fuels and timber to pay for the needed upgrades of parks? The reason we allow logging, coal mining, oil and gas extraction on public lands after all is to provide a public benefit, namely revenue for the lands upkeep.
