What adventures come next? βΊ
- Next weekend I’ll probably stay in town, catch the Nature Bus to Thacher Park, ride trail and road, hammock read on Saturday
- Following weekend I might hammock camp in north west Schoharie – such as Cotton Hill or Dutch Settlement, explore the Gas Up Tractor Festival
- The weekend after that stay in town, maybe go to the Gas Up with dad or a family trip to the Roger’s Center in Serburne
- The week after that maybe go to Schoharie and Mine Kill Pool with camping at Burnt-Rossman or the Potholers on Piseco-Powley
- Independence Weekend take off Wednesday and hopefully have Thursday and Friday off to spend at the House Pond campsite floating down the East Branch Sacandaga River in the tube
- Then the second or third week of July head out to the Finger Lakes National Forest from Friday to Sunday, a week later to do the usual summer vacation
- August come back to the Green Mountains National Forest or maybe Spectulator area. Will need to camp places with cell service for work
Hammock Camping in a clearing along George Aitken Wilderness Road
Sleeping in the hammock with the bug net was how I spent much of the first half of the Memorial Day Weekend as I couldn't get a roadside site on Somerset Airfield Rd which was closed to motor vehicles.

I mean I would have never discovered those wonderful campsites along Prospect Mountain Road in Woodford, Vermont or for that matter the hike back to Little Pond and the snowmobile trails that would be mad fun on the mountain bike.
Woke up early this morning around 5:30 am to cook breakfast π₯ β and start taking down camp before the rain comes in. After discovering this most wonderful of campsites the last thing I wanted to do was take down a bunch of wet gear and have to dry it out at home especially when rain β is expected the next two days. With the stiff breeze this morning and the clouds, the black flies aren’t too bad. A few sprinkles here and there by besides the hammock and two flags π – American and Don’t Tread on Me – I have little to worry about getting wet.
And while I was disappointed π₯ that Somerset Airfield Rd was gated and I ended up hammock camping the first two nights it was still an adventure and I’m glad I discovered several additional campsites and attractions near Woodford and Bennington. π² At least in my mind, Prospect Mountain Road is such a jewel – the campsites are spread out but close to town, the road is fairly smooth and there is cell service π± which is nice for remote work and streaming radio π».
Little Pond was nice, πΈ some nice views along the road, until you reach the wilderness barrier it’s very mountain bikable but I didn’t know that and didn’t ride. πΆ Still it’s sometimes nice to take it slow and walk and observe nature. π¦ I was sure after the hike I would he driving π home after exploring Bennington on bike but then I discovered Prospect Mountain Road on the map πΊ and the wonderful camping.
Last night turned out to be beautiful, π after the sunset and the black flies π were done. Sat by the fire π₯ until 11 pm, listening to podcasts and music. πΆ Earlier on in the evening I rode along the road to the UTV trails and then along the trails for a while. π² During black fly season dusk is always such a relief when you can emerge from the safety of the screen tent πͺ and screened hammock.
Even those long weekends go by so quickly it seems β³οΈ but I’m happy π how things ultimately turned out and I’m certain to be back here as I discovered a better way around Hoosick Street – namely Oakwood Avenue to Plank Avenue and Cooksboro Road. While twisty and slow no red lights π₯ or traffic going that way. Plus with cell service up here there is many remote work possibility. Now if I could only find a good swimming π hole.
