THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RECONDITIONING CENTER (NWSRC) REPLACED THE AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEM THERMOMETER AND ASSOCIATED ELECTRONICS AT THE ALBANY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT YESTERDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 AT 9:30 AM. THE THERMOMETER WAS REPLACED WITH A MODIFIED SENSOR AND CALIBRATED WITH A MODIFIED ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE.
A REFERENCE THERMOMETER, RUNNING SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE ASOS THERMOMETER, HAS COLLECTED DATA FOR COMPARISON SINCE JUNE. THE PREVIOUS THERMOMETERS INSTALLED SINCE JULY 17, 2020 LIKELY HAD A COLD BIAS (THERMOMETER RECORDS A COLDER TEMPERATURE THAN THE ACTUAL TEMPERATURE).
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL CONTINUE THE INVESTIGATION ON THE COLD BIAS IN THE ALBANY TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THE PERIOD JULY 17, 2020 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 29, 2021.
September 30, 2021 – Looking Ahead This Week
Thanks to the Omega block looks like October will start out cool π
I was hoping for a nice weekend, but especially up north it doesn’t look great. π I think you can say stick a fork in it at least when it comes to leaves around Pillsbury in the Adirondacks. Maybe I should have gone north last weekend.
This weekend might be okay π if I stay locally. Money is kind of tight after my car insurance and rent check π΅ and I thought I had a lot of vacation days but if I take off six days to do West Virginia during the end of October π I will be running low especially if I take sometime mid November to camp out in Cazenovia. I’d like to do some more of the trailway – I’ve actually done most of it – but I’d like to do some of it again.
One possibility is to hike at a local state forest and camp βΊ although the nights are getting cool and long so I may want something more than just a hammock and a flashlight. I thought about Schoharie but I’m thinking that for the following weekend.
Plus I’m just not sure how early it will cloud up and rain π§οΈ on Saturday. Definitely looks a lot wetter up north. I still want to do more of the Catskill Scenic Trail but if I go to Schoharie I want to do more than one night.

Good Morning – September 30, 2021
Good morning! Where did September go? π
I know you can ask that about any season and indeed it will be November and then Thanksgiving before you know it. But first things first with October. π¦
Mostly cloudy and 49 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. β There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. π. The skies will clear around 10 am.
Just waiting for the bus, π it should be here shortly. Then it’s downtown. Yesterday I was in the office π’ early enough that I could drop off my lunch and then go for walk πΆ on the Plaza. I might do the same today.
I got to laundromat last night π so I’ll have clean clothes for the next few days. I was going to run to the store while at the wash but I was running late and with the winos taking up all the parking π Ώ and getting late I decided to skip that. I have enough food π² and I’m undecided on weekend plans. I wanted to go to the Adirondacks but the forecast doesn’t look particularly good.
I did get my 10,000 steps in yesterday, πΆ although I wasn’t sure as it started to drizzle when I got home at 9 PM last night and I was tired. But I toughed it through the walk. Actually it was closer to 12,000 steps. It would have been more but the bus driver gave me a ride part of the way from the park and ride to home.
