Book Review: How to be an Anti-Racist

Last week I got out Ibraham X. Kendi’s relatively new book, How to be an Anti-Racist out of the Bethlehem Public Library as it caught my eye when I was browsing for books. It was the first book I read in my summer reading program.

I found it nearly impossible to put down once I got into reading it up at camp. It is a thoughtful discussion of the topic of racism, a reminder that we must all speak out against the unfair treatment of African Americans. For what laws are fair and just for blacks are just for all of us, because if laws treat blacks fairly when they are pulled over on the road then all of us will be treated more fairly.

Mr. Heredia is a 19-year-old volunteer with NYC Mesh, a nonprofit community Wi-Fi initiative, and he was there to install a router that would bring inexpensive Wi-Fi to the building. Mr. Cambridge’s family said they had become fed up with the take-it-or-leave-it pricing for spotty service that internet providers seem to get away with in this part of Brooklyn.

Mr. Heredia crouched to affix the router to a plumbing vent, positioning it so the Wi-Fi signal could avoid the tree down the block. An app on his phone beeped to indicate the strength of the connection. Higher in pitch and more rapid was good. Mr. Cambridge whipped out his phone to search for NYC Mesh among the available networks. “It just came up!”

Weather Update – July 16, 2021

I can’t control the weather but I can my attitude towards it as we head into another rainy and cold summer weekend. 🌧️

One thing I can say is it won’t be as hot but just as damp as it been all summer. ☔ I guess I didn’t pick a bad weekend to head out of town last weekend. I’m hoping the rain will hold off enough on Saturday though to catch the nature bus 🚍 up Thacher Park. I find the bus is a worry free way to get to the park and it’s a stress free, but orderly way to structure my Saturday morning with lots of reading 📖 in the hammock, hiking and nature observation. 🐸

One week until summer vacation 🏖, which hopefully will be less rainy but the early forecast isn’t promising. But the Finger Lakes National Forest will be nice regardless. I want to get a big bag of clams and even if it is rainy, beer boiled clams are good. 🐚 I plan to get some additional books 📚 out of the library to read and I’ll have tarps and bring my muck boots 👢 in case the woods is super sloppy. Who knows how much Robert Treman gorge swimming 🏊🏻‍♂️ will be open but unless there is thunder, the Watkins Glen pool will be good.
