Dolly Sods Road

Dolly Sods Road, straight as an arrow part of the way through Dolly Sods, reminds me of a true wilderness, like you might in Alaska or Idaho. It is always terribly washboard, because of the high elevation means it often dry. Strangely enough, parts of Dolly Sods are quite soggy because storms hit the east side of the Allegheny Front quite hard but the actual top of the front is quite dry as water quickly runs off it.

GOB Piles On North Mountain

West Virigina is a coal mining state, but historiclaly and today. From here, you can see GOB piles -- garbage overburden piles -- from old coal mines on North Mountain, just north of the North Potamac gap.

After The Fire

After the controlled burn at the Pine Bush, often the pitch pine turn a bright red. But they are not dead. They will quickly sprout new leaves and become healthy once again.

Bear Rocks View

My camera was almost dead when I reached Bear Rocks at the end of the day, but it still has some beautiful views of the valley below.
