Evacuation order lifted after compressed natural gas truck fire on the NY State Thruway
Montgomery County, NY (WRGB) — A tractor-trailer transporting compressed natural gas caught fire Tuesday morning on the New York State Thruway, prompting evacuations and a large multi-agency emergency response, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 9:02 a.m., January 6, 2026, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a call from the operator of a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on the Thruway. The driver reported that the vehicle was on fire and advised that it was carrying a full load of compressed natural gas (CNG) stored in numerous individual cylinders, which officials classified as a hazardous materials emergency.
