Notable Events in NY State History – September 15th
- 1776: During the American Revolutionary War, British forces under General William Howe captured New York City. This marked a significant turning point in the war and initiated British occupation of the city until 1783.
- 1830: The Liverpool to Salina Railroad, the first railroad in New York State, began operation. It connected the village of Liverpool on the shore of Onondaga Lake to the village of Salina, a few miles to the east, facilitating transportation and commerce in the region.
- 1963: The New York City Ballet, under the direction of George Balanchine, premiered “Jewels” at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. This ballet is considered one of Balanchine’s masterpieces and remains an iconic work in the world of dance.
- 2008: Lehman Brothers, a global financial services firm based in New York City, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, marking one of the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history. This event played a significant role in the global financial crisis that followed.
- 2009: US Airways Flight 1549, piloted by Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, made an emergency landing in the Hudson River shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. All 155 passengers and crew on board survived the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
- 2021: New York City held its mayoral primary elections, marking a crucial step in the city’s political leadership. The election ultimately led to the selection of Eric Adams as the Democratic nominee for mayor, who later won the mayoral election.
