Sixty Eight MPH

Sixty eight miles per hour.

That’s my preferred speed for the cruise control driving on flat, open interstates. At that speed my truck with it’s relatively low factory gearing and the large tires can move along in sixth gear at somewhere between 1,550 to 1,600 RPM. Basically a fast idle, moving along quite efficiently on the interstate for all it’s size and weight.

Sixty eight miles per hour keeps me going close to the speed of traffic, while ensuring I remain safely below the 73 or 74 MPH where you risk getting a speeding ticket in New York. Sometimes cruise control does speed up on the hills and you often lose speed climbing – sometimes dropping down to 63 or 64. But for the most part, you slightly above the posted speed limit of 65 MPH and remaining close to the speed of traffic.

Sometimes in hilly country I set the cruise control to 67 MPH to make sure I’m safe, but not always. I just feel this is a good speed to drive at that gets you to your destination in due time, without feeling rushed or passing other cars unnecessarily. I like to cruise along at steady speed, without going fast, enjoying the scenery, feeling relaxed and not stressed about taking a few extra seconds on my trip.

Maybe I’m a slow driver, but so be it. I would rather get to my destination safely, then risk getting in a crash or a ticket. Sometimes the slow poke does get the worm.

January 9, 2017 Evening

Good evening! A fairly chilly evening tonight with temperatures around 16, and a south breeze at 11 mph. The current wind chill is 3. Getting closer to the full moon tonight and it’s definitely pretty watching it hang over the city tonight. Traffic seems to be moving well on the old 787.I don’t know if they adjusted the timing at the traffic light at Southern Boulevard or commuting patterns have changed but traffic on the end of the 787, aren’t what they once were. The prior seems likely as it seems like left and straight traffic seems more delayed. 

Pretty much a normal Monday at work, not too bad, got out in time for the rush hour commute. I don’t expect this week to be too crazy but things could always change. I heard their was a building evacuation at my building before nine but fortunately I missed that with the cold. I’ll be glad when the weather warms later in the week. 

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 13 degrees at 1am. One degrees below normal. South wind 9 to 13 mph. In 2016, it got down to 37 degrees with periods of fog and rain and thunderstorm. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1968.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 83% illuminated. The moon will set around 6:50 am. The Full “Wolf” Moon is on Thursday night with chance of rain. The sun will rise at 7:24 am with the first light at 6:52 am, which is 16 seconds earlier then yesterday. Tonight will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 1 minutes and 24 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will snow, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high of 34 degrees at 6pm. Five degrees above normal. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had fog, rain, thunderstorm and a high of 55 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2016. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 1984.

A nice weekend coming up with seasonable temperatures. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 30. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 34.Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees. Not too bad for the second week of January. We will have to see if that forecast remains true. 

In four weeks on February 6 the sun will be setting at 5:16 pm, which is 35 minutes later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 42 and 19 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 33 and 16 degrees. The record high of 55 degrees was set back in 1991.

Looking ahead, Martin Luther King Day is Next Monday, Presidents Day is in 6 weeks, Palm Sunday is in 3 months, Patriots Day is in 14 weeks, May Day is in 16 weeks and Memorial Day is in 20 weeks. It will be Memorial Day Weekend before you know it. 

Corrupt QGIS Configuration File May Cause QGIS Rule Based Layering to Lock Up

Are you having trouble with QGIS locking up with the Rule Based Layering Dialog? Try deleting the “UI” section of ~/.config/QGIS/QGIS2.conf. I believe but haven’t been able to confirm that the paneldialogEdit%20rule is causing the program to get confuse and not properly display the window, after the window position has been moved.

For now, once you delete that section and restart QGIS, you should avoid resizing and moving the Rule Based Layer Dialog window. I don’t know when there will be a bug fix, but this seems to fix the problem for me now.

“Key considerations in our decision to shut down Indian Point ahead of schedule include sustained low current and projected wholesale energy prices that have reduced revenues, as well as increased operating costs. In addition, we foresee continuing costs for license renewal beyond the more than $200 million and 10 years we have already invested,” said Bill Mohl, president of Entergy Wholesale Commodities. “Record low gas prices, due primarily to supply from the Marcellus Shale formation, have driven down power prices by about 45 percent, or by about $36 per megawatt-hour, over the last ten years, to a record low of $28 per megawatt-hour. A $10 per megawatt-hour drop in power prices reduces annual revenues by approximately $160 million for nuclear power plants such as Indian Point.”
