Six dollar gas limit โ›ฝ

I decided that I am going to set a six dollar a gallon limit on how much I am willing to pay for fuel for a potential summer vacation out to Upper Peninsula Michigan.

I figure that if I average 15 MPG on SuperDuty during the trip (which is reasonable as a lot of it will be highway, and flat highway in Midwest), that means that if I end up driving 1,500 miles it will use 100 gallons of gasoline. At six dollars a gallon, that works out to $600.

Not sure if gas will be that expensive by August when I most likely will be ready to take the trip, but that still provides $400 for tolls, food and miscellaneous expenses while keeping my budget under $1,000. It’s possible I will stay a night or two at state or federal campgrounds, though that’s hardly a desired outcome except maybe for taking a hot shower. If I plan the trip for 10 days, that works out to $100 a day. It’s possible I will get a bite along the way to eat, but I much prefer to eat healthy and just buy ordinary food I normally do and cook along the way.

Who knows if gas prices will be as high as $6 a gallon by the second half of summer. While some analysis are calling for elevated gas prices to stick around for a long time, a recession or peace in the Middle East could lead to dramatic drops in gas prices in the meantime. Of course, shortages of fuel or other supplies, could be a bigger threat to this the great Midwest trip. I do want to get the oil changed on SuperDuty before heading out, as it will be first change of the break-in oil since I got the truck from the factory. And who knows what else that is essential for travel could be broken by summer.

At a certain point, even if things are going to be expensive, you just got to suck it up and enjoy life. May fuel prices will be cheaper next year, but who knows if I’ll be as free to travel or if now is the time to do it before time is too late.

Micro Hydro Electric Power System In Colorado Part 17

When I toured that off-grid house in college, they had a microhydro system that was pretty neat. Microhydro is fantastic if you have water on your land, because water power is constant and is very energy dense. Even a fairly small stream with a decent head can produce quite a bit of energy.

Are you heading out camping this weekend? ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Somebody asked me that yesterday and I was kind of annoyed. I got thinking I really should call Andy Ruth to find out what is going on with the truck cap, as I realized it’s now six weeks since I ordered it and it’s possible that he lost my phone number or his number is blocked in my phone.

It’s going to rain most of Memorial Day Weekend โ˜” and I am sure the black flies will be furious ๐Ÿœ so I don’t care but I really should find out about the truck cap, as it would be good to get installed next week if it is avaliable, and then start wiring things up the following weekend so maybe the weekend of June 7-8 I can head out of town. I still keep chewing over getting that box of relays I want to use for wiring things up.

Honestly, I am probably in denial about getting just another plain old but overpriced truck cap just like on my old truck ๐Ÿ›ป but the old set up worked pretty good so why change? I am not going to lift my SuperDuty, I am good with its ride height and size, being much bigger then a 1/2 ton and I don’t want to fuck with the suspension on the new rig. The 33s are a good size tire, and not expensive as the 35s. Still I want to get up to the wilderness and have a big ol fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ as its’ been a long time. But I am glad to be missing black fly season, ๐Ÿœ and I enjoy the quiet. I would have hammock camped this weekend if hadn’t been so rainy. Saturday and Monday don’t look like complete washouts, assuming the bike keeps working relatively well.

I woke up around 3:30-4:30 AM and was in and out of sleep, ๐Ÿฅฑ and by quarter to five I needed to pee ๐Ÿงป so it was off to the toilet at which point I figured I’d start the coffee, start shredding carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and whole-wheat flour ๐Ÿฅฏ I got yesterday at the store for the apple fritter pancakes. Good start to the morning, but early. I think I want to leave around 7 AM this morning, as again I have a lot of things to get done once I get in the office being the last Friday before the communication moratorium gets underway this weekend. It feels werid going into Memorial Day Weekend with no major plans, but I’m hopeful about the truck cap for next weekend. I just got to call today. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I realize it’s possible the truck cap has been sitting at Ruth’s and he hasn’t been able to reach me, but I also fear that parts delays are holding things up as I did spec the truck cap out the way I like it – with the racks, the side-opening windoors, sliding front window that will allow me to ventalate from the cab to the cap once I install some insulation between the two. Still planning on using that sticky door gap foam strips for that. Maybe I am still uncertain if I made the right decision on the truck cap – it was $5,000 when I could have gotten a used one for 1/10th of the price but I don’t think I would have gotten one that properly fits or with all the features I like for camping. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I often question my judgement, but yeah, I don’t want a plastic house that I have to drive to every day, sitting in traffic while the cops ๐Ÿš“ sit along the road with their penises sticking out, waiting to sick the next unlucky motorist that comes along.

A much cooler Thursday ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

Clouds and grayness to start out the day with the rain showers mostly trending to the south. Busy day in the office and I was to bed early last night so once I have my blueberry pancakes, coffee, shower, pack a lunch, it will be off to the office on the mountain bike. Leave early to help my mind with paranoia about the bike chain breaking again.

Yesterday was a pretty quiet day, ๐Ÿ›๏ธ made it home without getting rained on or bike problems. Still keeping a careful eye on the chain ๐Ÿ”— and the alignment of the derailuer. Maybe it’s golden now, but I have my doubts. Only two more real busy days in the office then it should quiet down.

Continuing to work behind the scenes on improvements to the blog ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป fixing little but long standing bugs, documenting some of the places I’ve been with coordinates, maps, stories and other content, using AI when it’s useful but trying to always proof and put my own stamp on things. โœ…ย  I really like AI as a force multiplier, but yes, garbage in produces garbage out. Nobody thinks a garbage burning barrel is going to smell like a rose unless your burning rose pedals and not plastic. ๐ŸŒน

Haded in my Absentee Ballot ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ yesterday, at the post office, ๐Ÿ“ฎ I should be good on voting now until October. Work at campaign committee has been busy with scripts and data processing for the primary elections, state work has been busy with the robo dialer ๐Ÿ“ฑ and scheduling everything out. I should call about the truck cap, ๐Ÿ“† it sure would be convienent if it’s ready to have it installed on Tuesday before the work picnic. ๐Ÿงบ And I need time to move money to pay for it.
