Who owns Data Centers?

The majority of data center capacity is divided between Big Tech “hyperscalers” and specialized real estate/private equity firms

1. Cloud & Tech Giants (Hyperscalers)

These companies build and own massive, customized campuses to support their own cloud services and AI workloads. Just four companies account for the majority of global hyperscale capacity.

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): Operates the largest portfolio of data centers globally.
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Google Cloud
  • Meta Platforms

2. Commercial Real Estate & Private Equity

These are wholesale colocation companies that buy, build, and lease data center space to enterprises and the tech giants mentioned above. The leaders in this space include:

  • Blackstone: The largest owner of data centers globally (through holdings like QTS and AirTrunk).
  • Equinix: The largest retail colocation and interconnection provider.
  • Digital Realty: A massive global real estate investment trust (REIT) specializing in carrier-neutral data centers.

Trimmed Mean Personal Consumption Expenditures

The U.S. Trimmed Mean PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) inflation rate over the 12 months ending in April 2026 was 2.3%. Calculated by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, this measure excludes extreme price fluctuations to provide a clearer signal of underlying inflation trends. [1, 2, 3]

Key Inflation Measures Compared

When evaluating U.S. inflation trends, the trimmed mean often provides a different picture than traditional headline numbers:

  • Trimmed Mean PCE (12-Month): 2.3%
  • Headline PCE (12-Month): 3.8%
  • PCE Excluding Food & Energy (12-Month): 3.3% [1]

How Trimmed Mean Works

Unlike standard “core” inflation—which entirely removes food and energy prices—the trimmed mean removes the most extreme price changes of all items in the consumption basket each month.

  1. Sort: Price changes for all individual components are sorted in ascending order.
  2. Trim: A specific fraction of the highest and lowest outliers are dropped from the calculation (e.g., the Dallas Fed drops components in the bottom 24% or top 31% of the distribution).
  3. Average: A weighted average of the remaining items is computed to reflect the baseline inflation trend. [2, 3, 5]

Still tired on this Sunday… 🥱

Yesterday was kind of a cool and cloudy day, more lazy then anything else. Still, I don’t know. Just kind of waiting for the truck cap to arrive and I didn’t have anywhere to go really yesterday besides the Pine Hollow Arboretum on the mountain bike and later down to Norman’s Kill West and Hannaford.

This morning it got down to 45 degrees ❄️ no snow and I had my windows already closed. Today is only going to get up to 70 degrees with more clouds moving in as the day progresses. Not planning a big day, though I was still up early with the sun and needing to run to bathroom. ☕ Coffee gets cooking and you know how that goes. 🤷‍♂️

Think I am going to ride out to Five Rivers 🐸 this morning for a walk, then come home, shower and probably do a quick hike up Bennett Hill before going out to see the folks for Sunday dinner. Get home fairly early and get a good night’s sleep 🛏️ by not staying up too late tonight. I ended up having to replace a spoke on my bike yesterday, as I noticed one was loose when trueing the wheel up, so I had to pull the rear tire. Front wheel is also out of true I noticed, going to tackle this first this morning. Inflated the tires good and hard using the pump plugged into the SuperDuty. Unfortunately the accessory plugs don’t work on the truck unless it is running so I fired it up to get tires good and hard. Hoping to ride into work all week this week. 🚲

I guess I could go out to Cole Hill or Partridge Run today, 🚶‍♂️but honestly I don’t feel like it. I just want a quiet week as I wait for delivery – hopefully – this week for the truck cap. I am thinking about a second solar panel and have been researching my options but I think I’ll stick with a second 100-watt Renology panel – more on this later on the blog. ☀️ Order the relay/fuse box for the truck wiring. I think I have most of the other connections. Still pondering over my options for the dash cam for recording my trip. I might get another VIOFO – my existing camera still works but it has crap inside of the lens I can’t seem to get apart to clean. I got ten years out of it before I will toss it in the flames. 📽️ I went to Hannaford after Normans Kill West yesterday.

A Go-Go Summer 🩴

Once I get my truck cap, I plan to do a lot more traveling. While the epic trip will be Michigan come August, I plan to spend as much of the summer and autumn out of town, on the road and in the back country once I get I get my truck cap and equipment mostly installed. Not going to have everything completed right away – no diesel heater, no cellphone booster initially – but I will have 200 watts of solar, the two batteries from my old truck, the shelf, lights and other gear for camping.

The way I look at it is with having done no real trips this spring time or even all the winter, I feel like I don’t have to say no too many trips this summer, and the truck should provide many reliable trips. With the bigger alternators, the 200 watts of solar, I should be able to pack and just set up camp without having to worry about running the batteries too low once everything is wired up. Hopefully get out and enjoy many long weekends at Piseco-Powley and also Moose River Plains this summer, and work remote from Green Mountains and Perkisn Clearing.
