A hacker bought a voting machine on eBay. Michigan officials are now investigating : NPR

For those not in the know, Hursti said it sounds shocking to hear that voting machines can be bought and sold for little money.

"People think it's a big deal but it happens all the time. Most of the time the seller is a government, a county, or it is electric recycling. ... And it is a good thing because hackers are a resource to make things safer."

Hackers like him, he said, are not interested in weaponizing the weaknesses they find. "The reason you pop open the machine is to learn the vulnerabilities" of each machine, in order to safeguard democracy, he added.

And there are plenty of other machines to tinker with, while he waits for the Michigan investigation to unfold.

"I bought two others last month, so I'll get started on those," he said.

This article just makes me cynical -- why election official so worried about people getting their hands on scrapped voting machines if they aren't rigged or terribly insecure? While there are plenty of legal ways that elections are rigged, such as voting laws and gerrymandering or simply stuffing political candidate's favorited groups coffers full of public cash. I tend to think lawful corruption and lawful ways of stealing elections is much more common illegal means, but who knows, this just makes me suspicious.

Daily Update – September 8, 2022

Good morning! Happy Thursday. 🌁

Kind of a dark and dreary morning. I am not moving fast, despite waking up before 6 AM and barely catching the 8:30 AM local downtown. I don’t know why, I think it’s the darker mornings with September underway. Usually though I’m good at catching the express, as I really don’t want to take the local when I can avoid it.

Overcast, with fog and 60 degrees at the CDTA Bus Stop #10595. 🌫 Calm wind. The dew point is 59 degrees. They are talking about more sun later, but first we have to wait for the fog to burn off.

I am still wearing my muzzle on the bus 😷 even though the Governor dropped the mask mandate yesterday, in celebration of the upcoming election. But if the politicians tell you not to do something, then it’s probably best to do it otherwise. As politicians primary care about getting re-elected and patronage jobs and not public health. Especially with cold season upon us 😖 it just some prudent to wear a muzzle especially in tight spaces like a bus. 🚌

The weekend is rushing towards me again, 😀 I have made no real plans for the weekend. I thought about heading out of town but maybe not. It’s a Thacher Park weekend on the Nature Bus 🐸 so that’s always a fun and easy choice that doesn’t cost anything. I’ve been thinking about doing a Schoharie trip or maybe Rensslearville State Forest in a future weekend, when I can remote work on a Friday. 💻
