Maple Trees Tapped

This interactive google map shows how many maple taps were driven in for each county. New York State and Vermont are the nation's biggest maple producers, but there are several other states that have smaller numbers of trees tapped. This is a consolidation of county level data, those counties with only one farm reporting maple production, were not included in the survey results, which depresses tap counts in counties that are marginal maple producers.

Computers were faster when they were slower!

Luke makes some good points about computers getting faster -- they generally aren't for users -- because coders are getting sloppier and we are demanding more out of them all of the time. I know Luke, and so do I reject the fancy window managers that are popular, but still even if you don't use the resource intensive window managers, software in general from the web browsers to video players, are becoming more and more data intensive. Solid state drives are a bright spot in speed, but still technology just gets heavier and heavier, even as the raw speed gets faster.

Cuomo’s Prison Workers Say They’re Not Actually Making Hand Sanitizer – VICE

I am sure the hand sanitizer is just rubbing alcohol and glycerin, along with some fregrance. You could mix those things at home or buy pre-mix, although it's probably just as easy to buy the 55 gallon drums or the IBC totes pre mix. if they're made in the same factory, it probably makes more sense to buy pre-mix. That said, most people do consider bottling to be manufacturing, even if your just repacking material bought in bulk.
