Vermont Doubles Down on Wood Burning, with Consequences for Climate and Health | InsideClimate News

In a state where winters are cold, forests abundant and people celebrate self-reliance, wood has also made its way into the Vermont's latest renewable energy planning, billed as a way to cut climate-warming pollution. But is it a clean energy solution?

Wood burning means tradeoffs, though—for air quality, public health and the climate. Wood smoke contains a diverse mix of pollutants that can harm people's health: carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds such as benzene and formaldehyde, and copious amounts of sooty fine particles called black carbon that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cross into the bloodstream. Vermonters already produce about 22 pounds of particulate matter emissions per capita from wood burning each year, by far the highest in the nation. And then there's the climate problem. Living trees absorb planet-warming carbon dioxide and store it, but once trees are cut down and burned, that carbon is released.

I think this analysis misses the point of how relatively clean rural air quality is compared to the big cities. Sure wood smoke pollutes a lot, but it's small compared to industrial sources of air pollution or pollution from tailpipes of automobiles in the cities. In polluted air basins, it makes sense to restrict wood burning, but in rural areas with generally good air quality -- at least compared to the cities -- wood is a renewable source of energy and supports healthy forests, even if it's not a good source of energy for the big cities.

So it’s official that I have Lyme Disease …

So it’s official that I have Lyme Disease 🐞

It sounds so scary — and some people who don’t get treated when the disease is either misdiagnosed or goes undetected — it can be scary. But honestly, as we inch closer to 2020, the treatment and recovery for early-detect Lyme Disease is trivial with basic, inexpensive doxycycline antibiotics.

I will be on a dose of doxycycline, twice a day for 21 days — a slightly longer treatment then the default 14-day one, as it’s been about a month since the initial bite, and they don’t want the bacteria, more extensively spread in the body, to mutate before the antibotics have a full chance to kill them off. 💊Antibiotics are pretty amazing products from health science — you take a pill and in a few days you start to feel better and within a couple of weeks it’s like the infection never happened.

Probably the most obnoxious thing is you can’t consume milk or dairy products (e.g. cheese and butter) while taking doxycline and similar antibiotics. Apparently modest amounts of alcohol are permissible but dairy can bind to the antibotics, blocking their uptake. Beer is fine, but not the beverage of the gods – milk. 🐮 I guess only around the time you take the drug, so it’s not a complete ban on drinking milk.

The whole process would have been a lot worse, had I not gotten a bullseye rash, and could be in an out of the doctor’s office in an hour and a half. I didn’t need to be tested for Lyme as the rash is symptomatic — along with myself spotting an removing the tick, there is no question that I have Lyme. 🎯 The doctor inspected the bullseye rash, listened to my symptoms and when I got sick, wrote the script and sent me on the way after handing the receptionist my $25 payment.

It probably would have been quicker, had I an appointment with my regular doctor, but he was moving and closed for three weeks, so I ended up visiting the local urgent care center. 🏥 Not urgent for sure — I waited an hour and fifteen minutes after opening to get in and see the doctor, but it was fine — I had my phone to play with while I waited and watched some Youtube videos.

The Vault — Louie Louie (The Song)

FBI Records: The Vault — Louie Louie (The Song)

You have to admit the FBI is certainly thorough in its investigations of alleged crimes, as was the case with the "Louie Louie" song. Take a look at their now public 118 page investigation above.
In 1963, a rock group named the Kingsmen recorded the song “Louie, Louie.” The popularity of the song and difficulty in discerning the lyrics led some people to suspect the song was obscene. The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity.

RECYCLE Act proposes $75M for education, with widespread industry support | Waste Dive

The legislation enters an increasingly crowded space of federal recycling policy proposals, but comes with broad consensus among many notable stakeholders.

It's exciting and interesting to see how many difference pieces of legislation are out there and actively being debated on solid waste policy on the national level. It seems like this might be one area that President Trump moves forward on, maybe kicking and screaming, but ultimately signing something, probably not exactly what the advocates want.
