Sliding Rocks Falls
Sliding Rock Falls (also spelled Slide Rock Falls) is located within the Hannacroix Ravine Preserve in Clarksville, New York. As the single waterfall of the 415-acre preserve, it serves as the centerpiece of a moderate 3-mile looping trail.
Key Features of the Falls
- Appearance: A steep cascade where Hannacrois Creek flows over rock formations within the Helderberg Mountain range.
- Viewing Points: From the standard orange-marked loop trail, the falls are primarily visible from the ravine rim. In months with full foliage (summer), the view from the trail can be obscured.
- Proximity: For a close-up view, adventurous visitors can perform a creek walk upstream from the southern crossing, though this is difficult, slippery, and involves getting wet.
Visiting Information
- Best Time to Visit: Spring or after significant rainfall, as the flow is generally low otherwise.
- Trail Difficulty: The Orange Trail is considered moderate with some steep inclines and can be muddy. It begins on Cass Hill Rd and features a boardwalk at the trailhead.
- Safety Warning: The ravine is subject to flash flooding; visitors are advised to check weather conditions before attempting to approach the base via the creek.
- Preserve Details: The area is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is open year-round during daylight hours for free. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash.
