Joe Biden — Experience Matters 👴🏻

A few times recently I’ve mentioned that Joe Biden has been involved in elected office since 1970, or fifty years ago. While that’s a sign that he’s old and an incumbent, it’s also a sign that he is experienced.

Often experience matters is a cliche used by politicians unsuccessfully. When you think a bit more about it though experience is quite important. Having delt with an issue in the past means you can recall first hand what works and what doesn’t work. Experience develops maturity, it makes you listen and trust experts over your gut instincts.

When I first graduated from college, I thought I knew it all. Looking back a decade and a half later, I recognize how little I knew back then and how much I’ve learned over time. I’ve become a better listener and know more often to call a friend when I don’t know the answer for sure. I’ve seen and learned a lot of things. As they say, the older you get, the more you realize you don’t know.

These days, as much as we need fresh blood and ideas in government, we also need experience. Coronavirus is an enormously difficult situation, and a calming inspirational voice can do much to help our country during these difficult times. I don’t see Joe Biden jumping to conclusions, I think he will listen to his advisors and keep the public’s interest first over raw politicking.

I am only 15 years in my life journey since college. I’ve never served as a United States Senator for decades, so my experience is far below the president elect. But I’m not planning on moving to the White House anytime soon. But I can see the benefits of being an experienced elected official, one who has lived through many difficult times and had to address challenging situations.

I didn’t vote for Biden – I cast a protest vote for the libertarian – but I am glad that the American people chose such a steady hand to lead our country. It doesn’t look like the 20s are going to be an easy decade for our society but I’m hopeful Joe Biden will be a steady hand, a mature and thoughtful leader for our nation.
