Well-planned landfills have only recently come into widespread use. Recently, waste managers have found that they work a little too well and now the landfill is being reinvented.

Maybe this episode glosses over some things and makes other things sound less problematic than they are in reality but it’s a good overview on how landfills work.

But as they say in the rural living handbook, The Code of the West, you can’t burn everything, and folks live in town need a place to dump their garbage as little of it is actually recycled, to say nothing of all the business and other facilities that create tons and tons of trash and always have full dumpsters.
