Honestly I think we should stop treating public employees like royalty. Replace the White House and the Capitol with non descript buildings in the suburbs, give the president a cubicle like the rest of us.

New York's problem is it's a very old state, burdened with an aging, rusting infrastructure, enormous legacy costs from pollution and retirees. Moreover, Upstate New York is largely rural and the rural population everywhere in America is declining outside of the reaches of the megatropolises. Rural and small cities lack the dynamic economic environments to are conducive to growth.
