China Is Quietly Setting Global Standards

China Is Quietly Setting Global Standards

"High-level trade talks last week between the U.S. and China grabbed headlines around the world, but in many ways they were beside the point. In the years ahead, tariffs and industrial policy — the main focus of the talks — will probably matter less in the growing competition between the two countries, while another, much quieter initiative will matter more."

"As China boosts overseas investment through its Belt and Road infrastructure program, it is increasingly dictating not just the terms of financing but also a broader set of technological applications. In doing so, it is altering the global competitive landscape by defining and exporting technical standards for everything from artificial intelligence to hydropower. This push into global standards-setting has gone largely unnoticed. That's partly because it's boring: Even broaching the topic will make investors' eyes glaze over, and few Western governments have given it much thought."

Are Cut, Raw Onions Poisonous?

Are Cut, Raw Onions Poisonous?

"“There is no validity [to this myth] at all,” Ellen Steinberg, PhD, R.D., L.D., food safety specialist, told me. For starters, the chemical makeup of onions just doesn’t support bacteria growth, she explained. Their low pH (i.e. acidic nature) and low protein content mean they are not an ideal breeding ground for germs, viruses or other pathogens. In fact, the opposite is true: onions contain compounds that have antibacterial properties."

May 7, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Suddenly Monday’s come back around again. A brief intermission for monetary purposes until the weekend. Three weeks to Memorial Day 🇺🇸. Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 43 degrees. The skies will clear around 3 pm.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞 , with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal. North wind 8 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1930. 0.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.❄

The sun will set at 8:02 pm with dusk around 8:34 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies and60 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌞 , with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2017, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1968.

This morning one of my eyes was feeling a bit irritated and my nose congested. 👃👀I think it’s a usual case of the Mondays. I’m sure by midday I’ll be fine.

I think it was worthwhile to take Exit 24 on Thruway rather than the Exit 25 clusterfuck trolls during rush hour and just pay the extra 25 cents. No congestion at Exit 24 although it was a bit slower crossing Lark Street and getting on the South Maul Arterial.🚒🚑🚐🚈🚓🚗🚙 I’m not sure there was any real time saving but avoids that awful merge and the fight to get through the place where you feed the troll with your EZ Pass or take one of those tickets. Maybe when the troll👻 goes completely virtual the Exit 25 troll booths won’t be so bad at rush hour although you still have to cross traffic to get to Interstate 90 west.

The electronics solder I ordered came and it seems to flow and stick well. 🔬The flux seems a bit more irritating than the old stuff I had but this time of the year the windows are open so it’s not such a big deal.

In the rainy weather yesterday, I noticed that my big VMS display📺 was malfunctioning so I added another capacitor to the power and ground mid module to do more voltage smoothing. ⚡Then all those modules stopped working all together. I think I just loosened up a solder joint on the data or clock line. I was thinking I could have damaged something by using a capacitor larger than recommended but up review and bumping the thing I’m convinced it’s just a bad connection.

Next weekend right now looks pretty nice but I’m thinking of staying in town so I can mount and wire the solar panel on my truck prior to the Memorial Day Weekend. 🚒 It’s a lot of work to go out camping and I need a break.💤 Plus the best time to go camping is once things are nice and warm for swimming,🏊 the black flies are gone and the Adirondack roads are all open. I might also get asked to help out with the Save the Pine Bush Booth at the tulip festival too. 🌷

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Memorial Day 🇺🇸 when the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. On that day in 2017, we had cloudy skies and temperatures between 74 and 60 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 73 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.
