When Does Spring Begin?

"Most people consider the first day of spring to be the Spring Equinox, which will start this year at 6:29 a.m. EDT, March 20th. This is because, astronomically speaking, the sun is directly overhead of the Equator as the Earth`s tilt begins to point the northern hemisphere towards the sun.

As the earth rotates around the Sun, the Sun will be situated directly overhead at mid-day at different times of the year. The Vernal (Spring) Equinox is the day the Sun is again highest in the sky at noon over the equator as the apex progresses north. The day the Sun is straight up at noon over the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn (23.5 degrees N and S latitude) are the summer and winter solstices, respectively.

Many refer to Astronomical Spring on March 20, as the first "official" day of spring. Most meteorologists, except for this year across the East and Midwest, will argue that spring begins a few weeks before, on March 1st.

That`s because meteorologists observe seasons over different time periods. Meteorological spring began March 1, summer begins June 1, fall begins on September 1 and winter begins on December 1."

March 19, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saint Joe’s Day. Nothing like some good Italian Pastries. Three weeks to Palm Sunday. Partly cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 7 mph. The skies will clear around 10 am.

While I didn’t have Italian pastries for breakfast, I did use some blueberry muffin mix in the waffle maker, so I’m super sugar high. I could bounce off the walls with all the sugar energy I have this morning. It was sweet but I don’t think I’ll do it again because of how sweet the mix was. I do like the corn muffins waffles a lot though. And I will be looking at getting some premium waffle mix when I go to the store shortly. 

Sort of overslept this morning so once this blog post is done, I will get in the shower than off to Shoprite, and pick up supplies for the week. I want to avoid the crowds after people get out of church. I have to start Big Red for the first time since last week but it’s free of snow because of the sun and the fact I kept brushing it off during the blizzard. 

Today is the Pine Bush Hike at 2 pm. I’m not leading it so don’t blame me if you don’t like the route. I’m sure it will be good. I guess we will be cross-country skiing with all the snow. Should be a nice afternoon. I just got to get shopping before that. 

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 41 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees below normal. North wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had sunny skies and a high of 42 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 2012. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1971.

The sun will set at 7:07 pm with dusk around 7:35 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 12 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday. Tomorrow is the first day of spring. 

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 21 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees below normal. North wind around 7 mph. In 2016, it got down to 22 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1967.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Palm Sunday when the sun will be setting at 7:31 pm with dusk at 8:00 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.
