Vosburgh Swamp WMA 📍

The Vosburgh Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 290-acre protected natural space located in the towns of Coxsackie and Athens within Greene County, New York. Managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), this vital piece of the Hudson River Estuary features a diverse mix of forested uplands, tidal marsh, and freshwater wetlands. It is entirely free to enter and stays open year-round

The WMA is a prime stop on the New York State Birding Trail. It serves as a crucial habitat for migratory waterfowl, marsh birds, songbirds, and raptors. You can regularly spot species like herons or track recent sightings through platforms like eBird.

The main trail is a relatively easy, 1.6-mile out-and-back foot path that takes about an hour to navigate. Be prepared for rugged, unpaved conditions—sections can become very muddy and waterlogged. In the winter, the flat terrain makes it an excellent route for snowshoeing.Accessible Infrastructure: From the middle parking lot off Four Mile Point Road, visitors can access a short boardwalk and a wheelchair-accessible wildlife viewing and waterfowl hunting blind situated at the north end of the swamp.

Regulated hunting and trapping are permitted on-site. Because the swamp is tidally influenced and very shallow, fishing is mostly limited to carp. Non-hunters visiting during the fall season should take safety precautions and wear bright colors (avoiding deer colors).
