Flight 93 Memorial – 1993 and Today
The Flight 93 National Memorial commemorates the crash of United Airlines Flight 93, which was one of four aircraft hijacked in the September 11 attacks. The memorial is located in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, about 2 miles north of Shanksville and 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Back in 1993, the site was a coal strip mine that was starting to be restored. History changed things on September 11, 2001, and over the past twenty years has been restored into a Nation Monument, recognizing that tragic day.
Flight 93 Memorial
The Flight 93 National Memorial is built on an old coal strip mine. The gold colored pools along Approach Road in the National Memorial are Acid Mine Discharge, a highly acidic chemical caused by pyrite rock exposed to rain water as part of the former coal mining process.
