Rooftop Solar is Kind of Dumb

While rooftop solar is often the “default” due to space constraints, it comes with several inherent compromises compared to other mounting methods. Ground-mounted systems and solar carports often outperform rooftop panels in production, but rooftop solar remains the most cost-effective entry point for many homeowners.

FeatureRooftop SolarGround-Mounted Solar
Upfront CostLower (~20% less) as it uses existing structures.Higher due to trenching, foundations, and racking.
EfficiencyLower; panels trap heat and are limited by roof angle.Higher; 15–25% more energy via optimal tilt/airflow.
MaintenanceHarder; requires roof access, ladders, and safety gear.Easier; eye-level access for cleaning and snow removal.
ImpactMay lead to roof leaks or complicate roof replacement.Consumes yard space.

Problems with Rooftop Installations

  • Structural Risks: Penetrating a roof for mounts can lead to leaks, even with professional installation. Furthermore, if you need to replace your roof, the panels must be removed and reinstalled at a significant extra cost.
  • Safety & Access: Cleaning debris or removing snow is significantly more dangerous at height.
  • Heat Degradation: Solar panels lose efficiency as they get hotter; rooftop units often lack the airflow found in ground-mounts, leading to higher degradation.

Trump Administration Is Considering Pausing the Federal Gas Tax to Lower Prices, Energy Secretary Says – The New York Times

Chris Wright, the energy secretary, said on Sunday that the Trump administration would be open to pausing the federal gas tax to give Americans some relief at the pump.

“All measures that can be taken to lower the price of at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of,” Mr. Wright said on the NBC program “Meet the Press” in response to a question about temporarily suspending the federal gas tax.

As of Sunday, the average national gas price was $4.52 a gallon, according to the AAA motor club. Americans pay a little over 18 cents a gallon for gasoline and about 24 cents a gallon for diesel in federal taxes. If the taxes were paused today, the average price for gasoline would be $4.34 a gallon, still well above the average price of $2.98 a gallon two days before President

Study finds PV plants reshape land surface conditions, reducing wind speed and increasing soil moisture – pv magazine International

A China-based research team conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 147 studies on how solar PV systems alter land surface processes, covering 609 installations worldwide and 11 key climate variables. The results show mixed but mostly significant environmental effects, including reduced wind speed, albedo, and land surface or soil temperatures, alongside increased soil moisture, while air temperature changes remained largely non-significant.

Oil prices keep falling, while US stocks hang near their record highs | AP News

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market is holding near its records Thursday as oil prices keep dropping on hopes that a deal may be nearing to allow tankers to carry crude once again from the Persian Gulf to customers.

The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil, the international standard, fell another 4.5% to $96.70, down from more than $115 early this week. It and gasoline are still much more expensive than they were before the war with Iran began, but hope is rising in financial markets as Iran said it was reviewing the latest U.S. proposals on ending their war.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 added 0.1% to its all-time high set the day before after a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said, “We expect an agreement sooner rather than later.” Pakistan has been acting as a mediator between the United States and Iran. The hope is that an end to the war will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, whose closure has kept oil tankers pent up in the Persian Gulf and sent prices higher for crude and all kinds of products worldwide.
