Had Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini not decided to take an expansionist policy, invading surrounding countries, would have the global community tolerated them on grounds they were anti-communist through the 1960s and 1970s?
Congress and Population Density
There are 106 Democrats with a population density greater then the median Democratic district, while only 12 Republicans with a population density greater then the median Democratic district.
There are 112 Republicans less dense then Median Republican district, but only 24 Democrats in a district less dense then median Republican district.
Congressional Districts, Malapportionment in 2021
While Congressional Districts are evenly propositioned within their states, the formula that allocates the number of districts to states makes some under and over populated.
In addition, over the past year, people have moved since the 2020 Census was completed, which has further distorted the population in each Congressional District.
Thoughts on immigration
I was listening to the radio tonight, thinking I really don’t understand the purpose of border walls or limits on immigration. It seems silly, if not an outright failure of mankind, that people aren’t allowed to roam and cross from one part of the world to another.
There is no wall or even a clear cut between New York State and Pennsylvania, just a sign along the road that informs you are crossing into a different state. Both states have their own laws and policies – certain activities that are totally lawful in one state can result in thousands in fines and years of incarceration by just crossing that imaginary line shown on maps. But you are free to travel between the states or even relocate to a different state if you should so choose.
Rather than building a wall with Mexico, the United States should work closely with Mexico to tear down the remaining differences. People should be free to cross the border without restriction, there shouldn’t be tariffs or restrictions on the movement of goods and people. While each country may have their own laws, let them compete for people and jobs – and let the best country win.
Why is Quebec and New York or Texas and Mexico so much different than New York and Pennsylvania? Sure, there is a needs for extradition in some matters and concerns with industrial pollution crossing borders, but people crossing borders in search of a better life should not be discouraged. Competition will improve all states, make them improve their laws and policies to increase their competiveness.
Ultimately I think the goal of leaders should be to tear down walls and bring forward market forces. To work together cooperatively to bring forth innovation and freedom of movement without delay or cost to the economy. Existing walls and border crossing delays hurt all, by delaying the movement of goods and services, needlessly wasting away potential economic growth.
I guess not all government workers are bad people 👨🚒
I guess not all government workers are bad people 👨🚒
Maybe it’s the field I work in — political communication — but the impression I get of most government workers is they are in for the money primarily, and that most government jobs are about patronage and unwarranted attention seeking. Maybe government workers fill a needed jobs, and some are competent at what they do, but they hardly are the noble public servants, helping those in need, that they use the mass media to portray themselves as. Maybe a necessary evil, but not as noble as they like to portray themselves.
But my views have softened a bit since the fire recovery efforts at John Wolcott’s house. With some careful negotiations with the fire inspector, and some help from current and former local elected officials, we were able to recover a lot of his files. The fire department was very sympathetic and helpful with the recovery effort, working to haul heavy, stinky, soggy wet boxes of files out of the house and ultimately allowed us to secure even more things from inside. They seemed genuinely caring and helpful, willing to go above the bare minimum of their jobs to help out the community. They took time they could have spent doing other activities, they spent actively assisting in the recovery efforts.
So maybe government workers do care about the communities they serve. There are good people in government, even if the incentive structures of government workers sometimes mislead them — be it campaign contributions, promotions, or other benefits from serving the politicians over the people. It’s good to know people in government sometimes actually serve the people, are willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Not all government workers are just political hacks out for themselves.
