Why Big Solar is the Best Neighbor We’ve Got
For anyone raised where the dirt is thick and the air smells like cut hay or livestock, the sudden appearance of a utility-scale solar farm feels like an insult. Watching thousands of acres of open country get swallowed by a grid of glass and metal looks like a violent, corporate invasion. My first instinct was to hate it. It felt like an incredibly stupid, naive reaction to the climate crisis—wrecking massive tracts of hard-worked land for a measly handful of megawatts. It looked like a scam cooked up by soft-handed urbanites who wanted to feel good about “saving the planet” from their city apartments, completely blind to the fact that they were turning our valleys into an industrial scrapyard.
But out in the country, you learn to look at things as they are, not how you want them to be. My mind changed because the reality changed. This isn’t a choice between a pristine, untouched paradise and an industrial wasteland. It’s a choice between control and absolute destruction. When you look at the raw math of land economics, utility-scale solar isn’t a threat to rural life—it’s the only damn thing keeping it intact.
The real threat to the countryside isn’t solar panels; it’s the parasitic spread of suburban residential subdivisions. People worry about the physical structures of a housing development, thinking the concrete and compacted soil are the issue. They aren’t. Concrete can be broken up, and soil can be repaired. The real, permanent death of farmland happens when a big tract is sliced and diced into a hundred tiny parcels owned by a hundred different suburban families. Once land ownership is fragmented like that, you are never, ever getting it back.
Solar farms do exactly the opposite: they keep the land consolidated. Giant tracts are leased from local farmers, keeping the title intact under a single name. And unlike a subdivision, a solar array is temporary and incredibly easy to tear down. The vast majority of a solar farm’s weight is premium, high-value scrap metal—copper wiring and heavy steel and aluminum frames. Even the panels have secondary value for off-grid set-ups. Despite the scare tactics and rumors, they aren’t toxic waste. They are mostly glass, plastic, and silicon bound tightly together. If you had to, you could bulldoze them into a ditch and cover them with dirt with virtually zero impact on the environment. Try doing that with a subdivision full of moldy drywall, asphalt shingles, and abandoned plumbing.
Let’s be even more brutally honest about what it means to live in the country: residential neighbors absolutely suck. True country living is noisy, smelly, and rough around the edges. If I am out on my property shooting guns, running heavy machinery, or spreading manure, the last thing I want is a city transplant next door calling the cops or crying to the zoning board about the smell of my hogs. A housing development brings people who burn synthetic garbage, play amplified music over your property line, and complain about the grit of rural life.
A solar farm is the perfect neighbor. It doesn’t call the sheriff. It doesn’t mind the smell of manure. It doesn’t cultivate fields or run combines at two in the morning, and it sure as hell doesn’t look or smell like a regional landfill. Traditional farming relies on heavy doses of pesticides, and commercial timber operations drench acreage in glyphosate just to kill off weeds. Compared to that, a quiet, motionless solar array that minds its own business is a blessing.
And let’s drop the act—the climate crisis isn’t a myth, and it isn’t hitting the cities first. It is hitting us. It is the rural homesteads, the family farms, and the orchards that are getting wiped out by freak late-spring frosts, unseasonal droughts, and torrential floods that wash away topsoil. We need clean, carbon-free energy to stop this bleeding, and we need a lot of it because electricity demand is through the roof.
Look at New York. The state has already exploded past 8 gigawatts of solar capacity, with a massive chunk of that coming from distributed and utility-scale installations. During peak summer heatwaves, solar has surged to provide nearly 30% of New York’s entire grid demand in a single hour. This is real, massive power generation that costs nothing in fuel once it is built, produces zero toxic ash, and emits no greenhouse gases.
Solar is land-intensive, and we shouldn’t sugarcoat the resources it takes to build it. But it is an aggressive, working solution to a crisis that threatens our livelihood. By generating massive amounts of cheap power while locking down massive tracts of land from predatory developers, utility solar isn’t a woke conspiracy—it is a steel wall protecting the rural landscape for the next generation.
