The High Price of Eggs 🥚

Eggs are remarkably expensive these days. At least the ones at the grocery store – – I spent nearly $6 on a dozen eggs at Hannaford the other week – – Walmart was closer to $4.50 and I’ve heard Stewart’s might have the best deals at or below the Walmart price. I’m not convinced there is much different in quality or health benefits between fancy brown or organic eggs and white ones you get at Walmart in the Styrofoam pack that burns black and kind of stinks at end of it’s life.

Eggs aren’t a big part of the budget but they do have a bit of sting at the grocery store. I like eggs, not just for scrambled eggs but also when I do a lot of baking – like making pancakes or cornmeal pancakes. I add an egg not just increasing the sickness of the batter but also to add some day filling protein to the breakfast.

Truth is though I do eat too many eggs per week, and they have a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol. Like any animal protein, they should be enjoyed in moderation. I’ve tried to cut back somewhat, reducing the number of eggs when scrambling them, going from 3 to 2 and adding more vegetables to fry, even if at times the ratio of egg to vegetables seems a bit on the lean-side of things. I try to make up with it by using more spices like paprika and freshly chopped garlic and ginger keep the breakfasts interesting.

It would be nice to have chickens but wit grain prices, it’s hardly a deal. Eventually when I move back out to country, I’ll probably do that. As not only do you get eggs and meat from chickens, you get ever so valuable nitrogen-rich manure to compost. And you use a lot less Styrofoam trays, which mean less noxious trash to send up in smoke.
