January 4, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. It seems hard to believe it was a year ago that the bus had that advertisement on it that said, “Green Means Go” ๐Ÿšฆ and the 8:26 would roll around, the air brakes released and I would be heading downtown on the first day of 2020. ๐Ÿš Then in less than two and a half months later everything would change. Three weeks to 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . More evidence that that 2021 is well underway and that at some point in the coming months it will thaw out.๐ŸšThe express bus stop is perfectly preserved in time, idle for nearly ten months.

Mostly cloudy โ›… with a fresh layer of snow on the land just below freezing at 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ Calm wind. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธA pretty nice morning for my walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป, sidewalks have been plowed and I’m ready for a busy day working from home ๐Ÿก. But first, the smell of silage on the air reminds me I need to get milk ๐Ÿฅ› for my coffee โ˜•.

It is going to busy once again, now that January is underway. โ„ That said, I kind of like how the winter months are often the busiest at work, because it makes the time go by faster. ๐Ÿ’ผ At least for the rest of the months I’ll be working from home, ๐Ÿ  which will save commuting time and make the late nights easier. I won’t have to worry about the bus schedule or catching the 11:30 PM bus home, as I’m already home. That said, I certainly miss the old routine.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers before 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 23rd. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1950. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 2003.โ„

I plan to work from home all day today. ๐Ÿ  I might start to dig out my truck, ๐Ÿ›ป but I don’t plan to go anywhere today. I do have a Zoom Meeting today, ๐Ÿ“น but I will do that using my phone at my desk at home. Got to maximize that unlimited plan while I have it and are paying extra for it to make it through the pandemic winter. Tomorrow I will go down to the library to work, ๐Ÿ“š just because it’s faster and then I can also get videos and other content that I don’t necessarily want to download over the mobile bandwidth.๐Ÿฅ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:51 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is 57 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:43 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 22nd. Light north wind. In 2020, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -24 occurred back in 1904.

An almost picture perfect weekend on tap for January. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 32. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

Not sure if I will head out of town this weekend, although it sure will be nice. ๐Ÿ• I always like to head out of town for Martin Luther King Jr. Day as I can get two nights out then, but it’s hard to know weather. ๐ŸŒƒ Few things help me sleep more than a good night in the wilderness.

Looking ahead, there are 19 weeks until Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.
