April 5, 2012 marks 25 years since the collapse of the Thruway Bridge over the Schoharie Creek. As the bridge crumbled near Fort Hunter, five vehicles fell into the water that morning back in 1987. Ten people were killed. After an investigation, faulty design and poor maintenance by the state were blamed for the disaster. To prevent future accidents, New York and the federal government have changed inspection regulations. Here is a story we ran on that day. The video contains footage of remaining parts of the bridge collapsing, as well as then-Governor Mario Cuomo commenting on the incident. Airials of the collapse follow the story. DATE: April 5, 1987 REPORTER: Unknown.
