In this video I want to share my experience with implementing solar at my off-grid cabin. I'm often asked how much it costs to have solar and that's a loaded question. There is no easy answer because everyone's power needs will be different. So in this video I hope to help steer those thinking about solar in a general direction of questions they should ask themselves and I try to provide some tips to help you avoid the mistakes I made.
The video is broken up into 5 parts.
1. How much do you need and how often do you need it?
2. Always have a backup plan and where you are geographically matters.
3. The Goods! What I have plus some tips.
4. Size matters!
5. The cost (for me). Is it a good deal?
my first setup:
100 w solar panel (not enough here in the winter)
10 amp charge controller (cheap - and again, not enough)
2x12v 100 ah deep cycles batteries in parallel (not ideal for solar)
1000 w pure sin wave invereter. (the only smart thing I bought)
• Cabin Life - My 100 watt solar setup
current setup:
2x235 w solar panels = 470w (that's better!)
40 amp mppt 4-stage charge controller (worth every dime)
2x6v 420 ah Trojan L16 batteries in series (waaaayyy better)
1000 w pure sin wave invereter. (still have it)
• BIG solar upgrade for the cabin! …...more
