Looking Back I Have Some Regrets About by 2017 Road Trip to West Viriginia

One year out, here’s what I regret about my 2017 trip to West Virginia.

I regret not spending enough time in the more southerly portion of the Monongahela National Forest, maybe driving down further south to see some of the coal mining towns and learn more about that part of the state. I did visit Corridor “H” and the Mount Storm Power Plant and saw some of the coal mining operations there, but I would have liked to see more.

I would have liked to visit some more of the impoverished parts of state — although I guess Thomas and Davis, WV aren’t exactly wealthy nor are the communities I’ve driven through in Sweedlin Valley and Morefield. But I guess growing up in rural, essentially Appalachia, near Greene County, New York I wouldn’t have noticed that.

I also think I made a mistake not to drive up Spruce Mountain, the tallest in the state. There were some really nice views from the top of the mountain state. I liked camping on the Gandy Run in 2015, and driving that back road through the forest, but that got missed this year. And there is so much of the Monongahela National Forest that I haven’t seen.

I did enjoy my drive the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound from Otter Peaks. But honestly, I think much of Virginia is a tourist trap, and I don’t know if I want to deal with the traffic or developed campgrounds the next time I take this big autumn trip. I prefer the wild country where there aren’t people out there checking to see if you paid your tribute for the tiny little campsite crammed against otheres.

I think I want to camp at Dolly Sods next time I come to West Virginia. Not the developed campground on the summit but maybe the road along the way up there. It’s a short drive or a longer walk up to the top to watch the sun set or rise. And then maybe do some of the hiking trails in the wilderness.

I also think the night I spent at Ohiopyle was a waste. But at least I know what the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania are like. Ohiopyle, with the natural peninsula is kind of interesting and the water falls are neat. But the campground is tightly packed, enforcement is aggressive (hide your beer!), and $26 a night seems steep even with taking a hot shower both before bed and getting up. Ohiopyle wasn’t as wild as I expected. Too much of a tourist trap downtown. The farms and the landscape of the Laurel Highlands could easily be much of Upstate New York or Pennsylvania.

I hate losing two days in both directions going up through Pennsylvania and Maryland to get to and from West Virginia, but I’m really unwilling to make the trip in one day. I don’t like driving more then 4 hours a day total, not including stops and parks. Anything more then that gets tiring for me and means I’m rushing to get camp set before darkness sets in early.

I probably won’t be back to West Virginia until October 2019. But I have some ideas what I will do differently — spend the bulk of the week in West Virginia, exclusive of the weekends for travel. There is much of West Virginia I would like to explore — and I could definitely pass on all the commotion and craziness of Virginia.

 Nestled Between The Mountains

October 4, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Four weeks to November πŸ₯§. Favorite month of the year. Heavy rain is a coming down (hopefully without too much Cesium-137 and Stronium-90) and 70 degrees in North Syracuse. 🌧 Even if it’s not radioactive, ☒ it’s still rather wet out there. β˜” There is a south-southwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees. The skies will clear around 5 pm. At least it’s fairly warm.

Today will have showers and thunderstorms before 3pm, then a slight chance of showers. High of 72 degrees at 11am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 1pm. πŸ–οΈ If it wasn’t so wet, I’d say it would feel pretty sticky outside. West wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. Autumns aren’t as cool as they once more. The record high of 86 was set in 1891. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 1987.❄

The sun will set at 6:39 pm with dusk around 7:07 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies and 64 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clearΒ πŸŒƒ , with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal. West wind 6 to 8 mph becoming north after midnight. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1965.

This morning, I am listening to Gordon Lightfoot. I actually started out listening to Tom Paxton but I’ve been moving through my folk music collection. just watching the time tick by on the clock, 🎢 Music always helps the day go by quicker.

Thirty-three days until Election Day.Β πŸ—³Β  Just have to keep things moving along. i will be glad once that day comes and goes. I am already starting to get a bit tired of being out in the field, especially with all the rain and clouds we’ve gotten lately. As much of a non-cook that I am I miss cooking, especially up in the woods.

Tomorrow I am taking a half day to head down to Jones Hill mid-day.🚢I will bring a hammock and take a nap up there most likely, then watch the sun set and the stars rise, heading back after dark. ✨ Should be a beautiful day, but kind of cool. But that’s fine, I’ve been looking forward to using my hoodie once again. Lots of pictures and maybe videos to upload this weekend.

Still looking forward to that big November Road Trip. I am thinking more about the places I want to visit in Western NY — probably not do East Otto / Zoar Valley again, but I could see visiting Rock City State Forest and then going down to Allegany State Park, especially if we have a beautiful warm late autumn day with lots of blue skies. Still chewing over if I want to go down to Elk Country, as if I do decide to go there, I definitely want to get a permit to camp two nights at Hicks Run. Walking up to elk grunting is magical. 🦌

I noticed that the starting battery voltage is a little bit lower then I like, so I left the solar panel connected both to the starting and accessory battery. I only really make short trips while I’m up here in Syracuse, so I decided it wouldn’t be bad to leave it charging all day. 😎 Not a ton of sun today, but maybe it will clear out later on.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until November πŸ₯§ when the sun will be setting at 5:55 pm with dusk at 6:25 pm. Elections! Road Trip! Hunting! Pumpkin Pie! On that day in 2017, we had rain, drizzle, cloudy skies and temperatures between 49 and 34 degrees.Β  Kind of chilly day that day last year. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

August 3, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Already it’s Friday! Two more days before I take down camp and head back to Albany. It’s been a very cloudy week but relatively rain free, at least compared to the previous week or even last year. With the end of vacation coming up on Sunday, we will already be in August, today marks three weeks to Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️.

The rain had stopped, but now it’s restarted and around 69 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector. ☁ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 66 degrees. The second half of this week has been quite muggy and cloudy although each day we’ve had a bit of clearing skies. The cowboys, or a guess graizers or farmers are out on the pasture across the street rounding up cows using four wheelers on this somewhat wet morning. 🐂🐃🐄

Today will have showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy β˜” , with a high of 74 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Today’s plans will be similar to Wednesday, probably head into Watkins Glen later to get on the internet and then for a hike in the gorge and a swim in the pool. 🏊 I’m hoping for more sun later, but I’ll take it hour by hour. I need paper towels, matches and gasoline too. β›½This morning, I’ll probably hang out at camp for a while, laying in the hammock listening to the radio, maybe going for a short walk later on.

Tonight in the Finger Lakes, the sun will set at 8:24 pm with dusk around 8:55 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for clouds ☁with a chance of thunderstorms ⚑ and 70 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 15 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy β˜” , with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1966.

As I brought my kayak all the way out to Watkins Glen, I really should put it to use at least once. 🚣 Especially as Saturday will be one of the most beautiful days of vacation. One option I’ve been thinking about is backtracking to Montezuma for a day and paddling along the Seneca Canal. That’s about an hour each way. Another option, is to put in on Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen and paddle the Montour Falls Canal, assuming that the lake isn’t too choppy and the canal isn’t flooding and mucky from today’s rain. After I did that I could hit up the Watkins Glen pool and deck one last time to soak up the rays before its done as far as I’m concerned for the year. Then obviously, one last hit of the Glen Dairy Bar.🍦🍧🍨 Another fall back is paddle and fish Lamoka Lake after visiting the Sugar Hill Firetower. Going to be such a beautiful and hot day on Saturday.

Come Sunday it’s the tear down that campsite day. β›Ί Yeap, vacation is coming to an end and I’ll have to head back to the old Albany to make more money, 🏢 so I can continue to invest in my future. 💰Going to be such a nice day, I’m thinking maybe I should get an early start taking down camp on Sunday, maybe hike Enfield Glen before eleven,🏊 then go swimming in the Gorge pool until 12:30 or one, then be back to Albany NY by four. 🕔

Despite the lack of sun, it’s been a good vacation. 😥I’m sure I will probably have a few more opportunities for weekend trips this summer, and I look forward to hunting season and my November road trip, which I’m thinking will have a day or two in the Finger Lakes, although the focus will be primarily more on the Western New York and probably Pennsylvania. West Virginia remains a possibility but not a certainty at this point, I’m still evaluating my options. 🗻

I love being out in the wilderness, and look forward to owning my own land and living off grid in a low tax high freedom state. 🔥🔫🐂 I wish everyday could be as much fun as my camping adventures, and not just be the daily grind in the city, with the toilet and refrigerator I’m always struggling with at home, or all the restrictions that come with living in the city. The rural landscapes and the hills and valleys really stir my soul and remind me there are things to life beyond that dirty, rundown apartment in the city that the rent keeps going up on.

When I get back home, I have to schedule an oil change for Big Red and I have an eye appointment on Thursday.👀 I have a coupon from the General for a $50 synthetic oil change and tire rotation, which is a good deal but it does mean having to bring it all the way back up to DeNoyer in Colonie.🚗 But then I shouldn’t need an oil change until late winter or early spring, and I’ll have contacts for the year.

I am going to create a new Facebook Page for my blog over the next few weeks. 📰 The new changes to Facebook API makes it impossible to automatically post from my blog to my Facebook profile, but if I have a page I can continue to easily post all my posts and photos to Facebook. I’ll probably share some of what I post on blog and Facebook Page to my personal profile but looking at the tools and options available for Facebook Pages, I think I make the switch sooner rather than later.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:23 pm in the Finger Lakes. Figure about 15 minutes earlier back in Albany. On that day in 2017, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 75 and 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

August 1, 2018 Morning

Good morning! It’s already August 🌻. Two weeks to Altamont Fair Opens 🎡. Yeap. Summer is rapidly coming to a close. I don’t mind that much, I like hunting season and November camping. There is nothing quite as beautiful as the stark blue skies on the land and in the woods in November.

Cloudy and 68 degrees in Hector, as I lay back at the hammock, listening to the local country music station, thinking about my mid point of the vacation. ☁ It’s humid but with the breeze and relatively low temperatures as I lay in the hammock doesn’t feel half bad. There is a south breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 67 degrees. There was some sun for a while this morning, but it’s come and gone, and without the sun the low voltage disconnect has killed the light strings.🐄 There is the light smell of cattle in the air, but then again I’m camping across from a cow pasture. Haven’t seen the cows yet this morning though.

It’s the hump of the vacation but at least for this morning it looks like the rain will hold off. 💦At some point I’m going to get a book out of my truck📘 and read for a while then I may go fishing at Foster Pond. 🎣 I’m not convinced we are going to get much rain today but without the sun I’m probably going to have to start the truck or go for a drive as the UV filtering through isn’t going to be enough to charge the battery.🔋 Plus I think I would like to go to the Watkins Glen library to get the latest podcasts and catch on the news and alike using my laptop. 💻 I also want to visit a winery that I met at Finger Lakes Wine Day at the Capitol which is nearby but maybe not today.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Cloudy 💦, with a high of 78 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 11am. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1933.

I don’t know how much rain we are going to get, but I tell you I’m prepared should it rain later. I collected up firewood for tonight and it’s under the tarp. 💦 I will probably head into town then and see if I can get on the internet at the library. 💻

The sun will set at 8:26 pm with dusk around 8:58 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for clouds ☁ and thunderstorms ⚑ and 74 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 12 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 9pm. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Cloudy ☁, with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1976.

Already starting to think about my November trip. 🚗 Probably for that one I may stay one night in the Finger Lakes National Forest then head west to the Western Finger Lakes and Southern Tier. I think I would camp at some of the state forests in Allegany County for a few nights, do some small game hunting. I might also want to visit the Zoar Valley and maybe Letchworth State Park. I might do an overnight at Stoney Pond and then visit Montezuma when the birds are migrating.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens 🀼/strong>󸐠when the sun will be setting at 8:07 pm with dusk at 8:38 pm in the Finger Lakes. Before eight back in Albany. On that day in 2017, we had rain, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 79 and 64 degrees. Temperatures start dropping as we head into August. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1959.

October 18, 2017 8 AM Update

Good morning! What day is it? Midpoint of my autumn road trip day, course. Decision day, have to figure out what to see and what to skip going forward. I guess I will pretty much stay to plan and head over to the eastern part of the state then tomorrow over to Virginia to see some of the backroads of the Shenandoah Valley.  Clear and 43 degrees at the Monongahela National Forest here in Davis, WV. Calm wind. Not as cold and certainly not as damp as yesterday.

Today will be sunny, with a high of 64 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees above normal. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 2015. Ain’t weather grand.

The sun will set at 6:33 pm with dusk around 7:00 pm, which is one minute and 24 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for clear conditions and 60 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday. Should be a nice day.

Tonight will be clear, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal. Light and variable wind becoming southwest around 5 mph after midnight. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is World Pasta Day when the sun will be setting at 6:24 pm with dusk at 6:51 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 47 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1963.

Columbus Day Road Trip Ideas

Over the past couple of days I’ve been thinking about what I want do for my Columbus Day Week Road Trip. While it feels like I just got back from my five-day August eclipse trip, that is really a fading memory, and I’m ready for another big trip.

One option, mostly discounted would be a Vermont Northern New York trip. This would be good if I don’t think I could spend the full nine days on the road due to bad weather, some issue with the truck (unlikely), having to do work (also unlikely), or family needs.

That trip if I do it would consist of overnight in in Southern Green Mountain National Forest, then heading up to Mid-State outside of Middlebury then head north and drive through Smugglers Notch. I’ve never driven through Smuggler Notch and that would be interesting. From there head east to the Northern Adirondacks or maybe outside of Malone to the Deer River State Forest then to some of the state forests I’ve long wanted to explore in Saint Lawrence County, like Wolf Lake State Forest and Frank Jadwin State Forest. Then come down through the Tug Hill Plateau. That might be an interesting trip, but that’s not the one I really want to take.

The October trip I really want to do is the multi-state trip that I did to years ago to West Virginia and Virigina. But with some different destinations then two years ago. I think I want to actually see the Blackwater Falls in West Virigina, visit Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania, drive through more of the farm country in the Shenandoah Valley and do more of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virigina. This year, I’m much less interested in Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive, as I feel like I’ve done that before, and I’m not interested in the constrained forms of recreation that parks provide. I’d rather spend more time seeing the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the speed limit is 45 MPH and the curves in general are much less sharp and hills are smoother. The Blue Ridge Parkway is such a nice drive compared to so many other roads these days, especially the steep hills of West Virginia.

The one thing about this trip option is it will have me staying more in developed campgrounds then I would like. Yes, most of the $10 or even $20 fees are nuisance fees in the grand scheme of things, but I like having my space while camping. It’s just not the same to camp when you have somebody else 20 feet away and you have to keep the noise down. That said, showers are nice.

The places I would camp in West Virigina in the Mongehella National Forest, along with the George Washington National Forest are dispersed camping areas and are remote enough I probably wouldn’t see many people around except for a passing pickup. I like West VIrigina, but those roads sure are steep, twisty, and narrow. I don’t want to overheat my brakes again or worry about that.

One thing that Northern West Virginia has going for it this year with my new phone is that the AT&T GSM network has much better coverage up there, especially outside of the hollows. On the long autumn nights, I like to be connected to the Internet, surf the web, update my blog, and no I can summon emergency services should I run into mechanical problems. I’ll take a long gun and extra food but I don’t like having zero service for multiple days on end. I just hate being totally off grid, especially in such remote country. The lack of cell service with my Verizon network CDMA phone more then anything else bugged me a lot about camping in West Virigina.

This year though, if I go down, I probably won’t first visit the Alleghany National Forest but will instead stay at Asaph Run or more likely County Bridge Primitive Campgrounds. They are $10/night but they are worth it as they closer to being on the way, and I can then hop on US 15/US 220/Interstate 99 and head straighter for Cumberland, Maryland then West Virigina and either to Forest Road 13 outside of Thomas, WV or Camp Run in Fort Seybert, WV. I liked the dispersed camping a lot along the high-elevation swamps on Forest Road 13, although I always worry about their being enough campsites up there because it’s somewhat limited along the road. That would bring me close to Blackwater Falls for visiting the net day, and also along Corridor “H” which is a newer expressway to Thomas. It passes by a massive coal fired power plant, which might be interesting to drive by just to see what is like in person. Another option down in the corner of Pennsylvania by West Viriginia is the aforementioned Ohiopyle State Park, which I’ve been interested in a while but are more interested since that hunter last autumn that I ran into on the trail told me what beautiful country it is up there.

Dolly Sods Wilderness is quite scenic but it’s a way up and I’ve been there before so I may skip that. Same thing with Gandy Run Camping Area and Spruce Mountian, the highest elevation in the Mountain State. I’d rather hurry down to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I would at some point crossover to Viriginia — I’m thinking US 250 — then drive down in the Shenandoah Valley for a bit before heading up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’ve seen the Shenandoah Valley from Shenandoah Parkway but never spent much time down in it.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a nice drive. The North Creek Campground in Bucchan, VA is quite nice, for $10/night and even had a bit of CMDA cell service there. No showers though. The next overnight would be the Flat Rock or whatever the developed campground is on the Blue Ridge Parkway is south of Ronoake. I think that one is like $25/night but they they have showers and maybe even electricity at campsites.

At that point, I would almost be to the Tennessee line and I doubt I would go further south. I would probably come back part of the way I came, then more of the Shenandoah Valley, camping over again at North Creek Campground in Buchanan then probably heading up to West Virigina and camping over at Camp Run in Fort Seybert. I might then drive home from there or maybe overnight at County Bridge or Asaph Run in Wellsboro, because I really don’t like driving that much, and it gets dark so early in October.

I don’t have everything planned out and I need to study maps some more. But that’s fine. I’ll work on that tomorrow, and realize there is more to plan. That said, next Saturday, October 7th will be here before you know it.

The Hills of West Virgina

This October, I am thinking about taking another trip to West Virgina. People from New York don’t know much about West Virginia, thinking it’s a backwards, coal producing state, but it’s also one with incredible scenic beauty. I love the beauty and the back country roads, but boy are those hills steep, the roads narrow and twisty. They’re tough on your brakes going down them, even in low gear, and tough on your engine climbing them.

Looking Back Into West Virgina From Middle Mountain

But then again, I was in the highest elevation part of West Virginia, visiting places like Dolly Sods and Spruce Mountain. Great country, but you are up high. Climbing and descending the mountains, really isn’t much fun in West Virginia, especially with a lifted truck with a low gear ratio and somewhat undersized brakes.

South

I kind of would love to see that country again, but I think I would try to stay off of some of those hills, preferring to stick to main roads, that go through valleys as much as possible. I would definitely avoid mountain passes, because I really don’t find that driving that much fun, with my fear of having issues with the truck, with no cell service in much of the northern part of state, due to the National Quiet Zone.

Farm in Riverton, WV

If I do go down there, I will skip Shenandoah National Park. That park was fun to see but I would like to do more of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and head further south. I do need to plan which campgrounds I would stay at, because there aren’t the free camping opportunities along the Parkway, as I might find in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. But so be it. I can survive in a lightly developed campground, like North Creek Campground in Buchanan.

Straightaway

I don’t know how far south I could go on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but at 45 MPH, you can make a lot of distance. The parkway is a fun drive, it lacks the sharp curves and hills that you find in either West Virginia or Skyline Drive at Shenandoah National Park. I got to really hate the hills in West Virginia. I actually found the Blue Ridge Parkway to be the most pleasurable part of my trip, even if there was a lot of speed traps on gently sloping downhills. Cruise control and Waze helps with that.

Road Trip to Coal Country by Nate Matthews

It would be a fun trip. I just got to keep planning, and play it out by ear as the autumn approaches.
