August 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. ๐ŸŒƒ Another quite pleasant mid summer evening with the crickets ๐Ÿฆ— singing their song. ๐ŸŽถ

Called the forest service today ๐ŸŒฒ to confirm that camping ๐Ÿ• was still open after the earlier Coronavirus closure. It is.. Did some packing but the first half of the day I was super groggy for unknown reasons. ๐Ÿ˜ด Didn’t do the laundry ๐Ÿ‘š as I figured do it all on Friday while I work before heading out in the evening. Assuming tomorrow evening isn’t a complete washout.

I discovered I had accidentally deleted the code that allows me to display charts ๐Ÿ“Š and history comparisons today but if you hit refresh ๐Ÿ”„ that should be good now. Also uploaded a few other new things. Then it was a busy afternoon at work, getting things lined up before vacation. ๐Ÿ– Went to the Town Park and worked on the blog for a bit.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 58 degrees at 3am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 9pm. Light north wind. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1994.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 88% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:08 pm. The darkest hour is at 1:02 am, followed by dawn at 5:22 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:54 am in the east-northeast (66ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 9 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:33 am with sun in the east-northeast (73ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 45 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have isolated showers, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1918.

I started packing this evening and doing some cleaning during the downtime today. ๐Ÿงน The beer ๐Ÿป is in the fridge being chilled, I started packing clothes ๐Ÿ‘– and the water containers are loaded in the truck. I’ll do the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ and propane tomorrow.

I am thinking of leaving tomorrow after work for Madison County ๐Ÿฎ but I might not leave until Saturday morning early if Friday night is going to be a real washout. While I’d rather be farther west and break the trip up going out there not if it means camping the first night in the pouring rain. โ›ˆ๏ธ I don’t want to get soaked my first night of camping. Still thinking about the mid state route via NY 13 and Cortland.

Weather looks pretty good for next week ๐Ÿ‘Œbased on the at least some forecast models but others show more clouds ๐ŸŒฅ and rain. It’s summer and it’s a crap shoot but if the weather is too bad I’ll just stay in camp and read ๐Ÿ“–. Nice thing about the National Forest is you can camp for up to two weeks, no permit needed.

Been drinking a lot more water ๐Ÿฅค with lemon juice in it. ๐Ÿ‹ Much healthier than all that apple ๐Ÿ juice I’ve been drinking lately. No sugar in it although I’m sure the acid ain’t great for the teeth but I still drink plenty of milk. ๐Ÿฅ›Plus a whole lot less plastic trash. โ™ป

In four weeks on September 3 the sun will be setting in the west (281ยฐ) at 7:25 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 43 minutes and 17 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 79 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 56 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1953.

Looking ahead, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 5 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 6 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ and Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 8 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 10 weeks, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 16 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 4 months, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 4 months, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 18 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 20 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 21 weeks, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 23 weeks, Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 25 weeks, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 6 months, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 27 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 28 weeks.

April 24, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is May 1st. Been such a cold spring it’s hard to imagine that next week is May. It’s only just starting to green up in Albany. ๐ŸŒธ Rain and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. 0.14 inches of rain is expected before it ends around 4 pm. Not a lot of rain predicted and Saturday will be nice.

Coffee โ˜• and wild berry muffins this morning for breakfast. Also cream cheese. It was a pretty decent breakfast not as heavy or labor intensive as making eggs ๐Ÿณ like I did yesterday. No birds ๐Ÿฆ out the window to give the middle finger too. I do get a laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚ out of giving the bird to the birds. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m nuts.

Wish it was nicer out but I really shouldn’t complain much ๐ŸŒป– I am sure hot and humid days are right around the corner. It will kind of suck this year if state park swimming ๐ŸŠ pools are closed because of Coronavirus.

Today will rain likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 53 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Kind of a dreary day for sure. ๐Ÿ’ฆ April Showers bring May flowers although they’ll be no tulip festival ๐ŸŒท this year not that I ever went to that except for tabling for Save the Pine Bush a few years ago. But it’s nice when things green up except of course for the black flies.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-10.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:10 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (289ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 4 seconds with dusk around 8:18 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (282ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, 247,483 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:55 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 49 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 38 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 36 degrees at 4am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 12th. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 23 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Typical for tomorrow. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

Sounds like a remarkably nice spring day. โ˜€ I have to get early up tomorrow but I should have most of the day to enjoy spending in the woods. ๐ŸŒฟ I’m thinking about hiking in the afternoon and maybe hammock camping โ›บ in a state forest, although it might be a bit chilly and wet by morning. I think the rain is coming early come Sunday.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 52. East wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Definitely going to be a real dreary day. I’m going to have to get some more videos to watch from the library Wi-Fi and some more data to make up maps.

Paid my rent or actually the bank did ๐Ÿฆ as next week is May. Hopefully enough of my neighbors are too and my landlord isn’t going bankrupt. ๐Ÿก He does have a nice house over the river but who knows what his cash flow situation is like. I know a lot of out of work people aren’t paying rent. I also had to cancel the double bill for my car insurance – they kindly sent me a second bill for the time period with a later deadline and a reduced payment – but it meant that I cancel that from auto bill pay as I had already paid my bill for the next six months. ๐Ÿ’ต

I am still waiting on my stimulus check to arrive ๐Ÿ’ฐ but because I didn’t owe or get anything refunded from the federal government this year, I don’t think they have my information on file and the last I checked their website wasn’t working. I was hoping it would come sooner rather than later so I could use it partially to buy index ๐Ÿ“‡ funds when the market is still cheap. I’m young I’m not phased much about the sluggish performance of the market lately. I do think at some point Coronavirus will kill who it’s going to kill (hopefully not me or loved ones) and then we’ll move forward. Ten years from now I expect the markets to be a lot stronger and then I can buy land. ๐Ÿšœ

As previously noted, next Friday is May 1st ๐Ÿ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 56 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.

February 22, 2020 Night

Good evening! Clear and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 9 am. 🌡๏ธ

Not a half bad day, sunny but fairly cool. โ˜€ Pine Bush Hike 🌲 in the morning, than Yonder Farms, 🍪 came home for lunch, picked up my dry cleaning, hiked and watched the sun set at Schodack Island State Park, 🚶 gassed up and washed off Big Red and but groceries at Aldis and Wally World. 🍓Good day but a bit muddy at the Schodack Island but lots of birds 🐦 and they were chirping.

The Pine Bush Hike was fun 🚶 as one of the people there was from Missouri and worked for years with the Farm Bureau and also the Forest Service on conservation planning. 🌲 Similar to all of the stuff that the DEC does for UMP and the National Forest down there also leases out grazing rights similar to the Finger Lakes National Forest. 🐮 I’ve always been very interested in the Ozarks – as she was saying it’s a lot cheaper and less snowy down there and folks are much less high strung than us New Yorkers. Plus gun laws are much better and fewer restrictions on open burning. 🔥 They also do a lot of fire management and controlled burns on the national forest as they do in the Pine Bush.

Plus I always like Schodack Island. 🐦 Castleton on the Hudson is always pretty as is driving past the mud flats and the very gritty outskirts of Rensselaer. Maybe not the great farm country as up the hill 🚜 but still a nice drive. Plus I like Aldis in Rensselaer. Inexpensive but a nice store 🏬.

Only pet annoyance was the guy in the big truck wash bay at the car wash 🛀 while all the other bays were empty. But I just pulled out my phone and waited 📱, listening to the radio and the results of the Nevada caucus. 📻 I think Bernie Sanders will be a good candidate to run against Donald Trump this cycle and he very much may win although the Republicans in Congress will block everything he does and probably win back the house and senate in two years – the off year 2022 railing against the socialist in the White House.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 23 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Light south wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1972.

Tonight will have a New 🌚 Moon. The Worm 🐛 Moon is on Monday, March 9. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:15 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:44 am in the east-southeast (104ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Sun is rising quite a bit earlier these days as the time change approaches. The golden hour ends at 7:23 am with sun in the east-southeast (110ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 5 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 24th. South wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2017. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1935.โ„

Going to be a nice day, so I want to get a fairly early start and hike at Partridge Run. 🚶 I’ll probably start at Gifford Hollow Road but I might wander quite a ways west but I’ll stay on the roads because the woods will be a muddy mess. 👢 🐽

In four weeks on March 21 the sun will be setting in the west (271ยฐ) at 7:09 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 33 minutes and 44 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 48 and 38 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1921.

How to Get Out of New York

President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that people leave Upstate New York got me thinking about my own plans to eventually get out of New York, buy land, and have my off-grid property in 10-20 years. Not that I totally agree with Trump’s remarks — Upstate New York’s economy struggles as much as virtually any old industrial and rural area — but because I like the idea of living in a state that is lower cost and has more freedom to enjoy my life as I so wish.

Save and Invest

Money can’t buy happiness, but it can keep you from being trapped into debt and poverty. Spent not on things but on land and experience, can make your life much better. Probably my top priority for figuring out my plan to get out of New York is to have the money to live a decent life, have options, even if it means taking a lower income job going forward. I don’t want to jump until I know I have a sound landing place.

Learn

I am pretty comfortable with being in the wilderness, building fires, working with low-voltage electricity. I understand energy doesn’t come from God, it’s not unlimited. I am willing to conserve. But I still have a lot to learn. I don’t know much about building maintenance or codes. I understand the basics of batteries and solar but are no expert. I need to become a much better hunter and fisherman. I need to read, need to travel, need to read more.

Nail Down Places to Move To

I want to move out of New York State so I can have lower taxes, cheaper living, more freedom. That’s a given. But where to? The rest of the nation, except for the short time I’ve spent in parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Vermont and New Hampshire. I like Pennsylvania, but it’s still kind of cold and snowy, and the taxes are high. But Pennsylvania has good gun laws, they respect the second amendment. They allow open burning, they are pretty relaxed out in the country. There is some pretty nice country in the Pennsylvania wilds for sure, and it’s a reasonable distance. West Virigina is also beautiful but the state’s politics are a bit troubling to me, but in general it’s a wonderful state, especially out in the hills and hollers around the National Forests.

Find Work

It’s hard to relocate without a job. I have some skills from the past decade, maybe two decades by the time I leave New York, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of jobs they would directly translate into. Maybe I could go back to school or continue to learn new skills on my own. I think though doing my best at my current job and building a solid work history is key to me figuring out what I can do next when I get out of New York. Obviously, I might have to a long drive, for interviews, or even take a plane. At the same time, it’s a bit hard to judge a piece of land without going there and seeing it in person — the Internet is great — but it doesn’t give you answers overnight.

Move

When I finally get my ducks in a row, the big thing wil be the move. I will probably have a truck at that point, and I can probably buy or rent a trailer, or maybe just use something like a U-Haul. It would be quite the adventure, but fortunately I don’t have that much stuff, and i probably could move it relatively easily and inexpensively. Nothing is really tied up.

Rent a Place

As much as my goal is to eventually live off-grid, I think I’ll probably end up renting first before I buy land and a cabin. Renting gives me a place closer to where I work, and lets me have some time to find the best land and property around to buy. Try before you buy say the TV commericals. And if for some reason I don’t like the area I end up in I’m not tied down it.

Buy Land/Home

The final step is to buy land and a home. I am still thinking I like the idea of a small cabin, up in the middle of nowhere, away from the road, far away enough from neighbors so I won’t bother them and they won’t bother me on my land. I want to have as low expenses as possible, I want to have land where I can generate my own electricity, manage my own waste, minimize my consumption of natural resources. Land where I can hobby farm, hunt, and enjoy without anybody else bothering me.

It’s a Process. A Journey.

It’s important to have a vision for one’s future, and work to build for it. I am in no rush to leave New York or get on to my next step in my life. My focus is building my investments, learning, and enjoying the life I have right now. Tomorrow will come, and it will be a better life if I prepare for it appropiately.

Cattails along the pond

February 21, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Three weeks to 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ†. Sunny and 19 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. ๐ŸŒž There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Honestly with the sun at a relatively high angle, it feels a lot warmer — I turned my heat down this morning to 50 degrees before I left for work.ย  There is a little bit of snow and ice on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Should be a great day tomorrow at the Save the Pine Bush Hike.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high around the freezing point at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 5th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2018. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ„

All and all a beautiful morning. ๐ŸšถI know I enjoyed my walk down tot he Park and Ride.๐Ÿ•ถ Took Gillig 4115H downtown, which was fine, but it seemed like the hybrid portion of the bus wasn’t working right, so the bus accelerated really slow (almost like a blown turbo) and there wasn’t a lot regenerative braking. ๐Ÿ’ฅ Believe it or not, that bus is now 13 years old, so it’s past it’s lifespan but as long as they can repair the problems, I am sure it will get a few more years of use. ๐ŸšŒ Unlike the Gillig 4114H which is blowing a ton of black smoke — at least the last time I rode it.๐Ÿšญ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 36.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-34.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 40 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. South wind 7 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. The record high of 68 was set in 1997. 14.8 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 48. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Sunday should be nice, I am thinking about hiking at Partridge Run or maybe Renssleearville State Forest again, as there might still be enough snow out there. โ›ท Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

Gobler's Knob Stage

February 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the long Presidents Day Weekend! I am hoping to go skiing ๐ŸŽฟ on Presidents Day, at Rennselear State Forest. Too much snow right now for camping. โ›บ Six weeks to Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ. There is hope for spring. Sunny and 5 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The It’s actually not as cold as you might think with the sun and no wind. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out Sunday around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

With the sun โ˜€, Big Red started right up ๐Ÿš˜ this morning. All of the batteries were fully charged after yesterday’s bright ๐Ÿ”† sun. ๐Ÿ”‹ I did have to warm up Big Red a bit though and use my ice scrapper. Out hiking in the Pine Bush this morning before the Save the Pine Bush meeting. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ Later on I’m going to Reszin Adam birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ to record more for the documentary. ๐Ÿ“น I also need to get to the store ๐Ÿฌ and get frozen broccoli and corn ๐ŸŒฝ, maybe also some cheese. Tomorrow I’ll probably stay home – going to be mild but cloudy โ˜ – except for walking down to the library. ๐Ÿ“–

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 27 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees below normal. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Cold but not that bad. One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Ides of March โœ when the sun will be setting at 7:02 pm with dusk at 7:30 pm (Daylight Savings Time). Approaching the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower

February 14, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Valentines Day โค๏ธ! I already got the email 📧 from Fur Bearer Conservation wishing me a Happy Valentines Day. Skunk trapping is kind of a skill as you don’t want to get sprayed but it’s a marketable fur. People like skunk coats. Four weeks to 7 PM Sunset 🌆.

For this Valentines Day it’s partly cloudy and 16 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ›… Breezy, ๏ธ17 mph breeze from the northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 32 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 0. Probably warmer for those folks milking the cows 🐮 outside Valatie with all the heat they kick off – I’m sure though with the curtains down in the barns. That said, I don’t think it’s that bad out in Delmar but it bet it will be frigid downtown. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around 10 am. 🌡๏ธ

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 18 degrees at 1pm. 16 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 5 at 1pm; Northwest wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Cold. But it’s been a pretty mild winter so far. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. Tomorrow I have a Save the Pine Bush meeting at ten o’clock 🌲🌲🌲but first I might go out hiking in the Pine Bush if it’s not too cold. Hoping like today it will be reasonable with lots of sun โ˜€ making it less cold. Following that I’m going to meet Rezsin Adam’s and do some video taping 📹 of her telling her story for the documentary. Then maybe an evening hike in the Pine Bush if it ain’t too cold.

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 41. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees. Depending on how nice Sunday is I might go hiking locally – too much snow to camp up north 🚶 but it should be a nice day. Presidents Day I’ll probably go skiing 🎿 out at Rensselaerville State Forest, it’s a long time since I’ve been out that way.

🌹🌻🌼Only 34 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until 7 PM Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time).
