Good morning! Cool and clear start to the Tuesday. Partly clear ๐ and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ก๏ธ
I’ll be the first to admit that it is a cold start to the morning with the heat off ๐ธ but it’s spring and I’m not going to pay for heat if there is no danger of pipes freezing or excessive cold. Indeed this afternoon it should be in the mid 50s. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my February – March electric and gas bill was only $85. Heating blanket boosted the electric side of things a bit but keeping it at 48 except the coldest days helped a lot. ๐ต I was expecting a little bit over $100 for the bill like the January – February bill with the cold we had mid February.
Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ, with a high of 56 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 8th. Light and variable wind becoming west 6 to 11 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1921. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1905.โ
What can I say, it’s going to be a a nice day. ๐ข Too bad I’m going to be in the office all day downtown. Now if we could only have another pandemic and I could be remote working from my truck at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center like I was three years ago. ๐ฆ Watching the birds while I wrote the memos ๐ and endless Zoom meetings. Those were the days.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 6:31 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐ธ
I cooked up some of the wild salmon I bought on Sunday. ๐ I have to say it was tasty. And easier to cook than fish sticks or breaded fish filets. Healthier too. I don’t know why I had never done it before, you just take it out of the freezer in the morning, toss it in the refrigerator before work. Then in the oven broccoli ๐ฅฆ and also brown rice with lentils and seasonings – chilli ๐ถ powder and garlic powder. Being individually vaccum wrapped its more plastic than I would like but I’ve cut plastic out in other ways like not buying apple juice or as much milk and it’s a lightweight plastic bag that should make an excellent fire starter especially with the fish oils. ๐ฅ Really easy to bale that plastic wrap into a tight ball โฝ. Cost wise, it’s slightly more expensive but the portions are perfect and actually save money by ensuring you only eat the right amount as the rest is frozen and can’t be eaten right away. ๐ต
The sunset is in the west (271ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:09 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:36 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:10 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.
Last night I went to the Elm Ave Park ๐ and walked until dusk ๐ which was nice for the first time after work this year. ๐ถ It helps to get in the extra steps ๐ฃ and it’s fun to walk in the woods around dusk ๐ฆ and see what wildlife is out there. Still though not a lot of evening after dinner but it’s good to get to bed relatively early.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a low of 31 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1875.
Finished my taxes last night, ๐ and while checking the paper forms for my state taxes noticed that I hadn’t reported any Capital Gains on my federal taxes, panicked for a minute and double checked my investment statement and confirmed no capital gains received this past year as the market ended down ๐ so much this past year. I didn’t sell anything this year but in better years I do get some capital gains just from the index funds that sell off parts at times to make sure they are still accurately tracking the market. But not in 2022, as most of the leading stocks were down. Got lots of dividends though but I prepaid enough to cover them. I filed ๐ my federal taxes online but did paper state taxes as the state ones are simple as I’m a renter but not super poor so I don’t have any real state tax credits except for my contributions to my neices education account.
Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, rain likely, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all rain after 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 40. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 49 degrees.
I was hoping that the upcoming weekend would be warm and sunny โบ for camping at Rennselearville State Forest but I don’t think it’s likely. I was figuring the fire risk would be low if there is snow on the ground. The fire ban applies only to brush burning not campfires kept small and in eye sight. ๐ฅ
Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Average High is 50 ๐ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:17 pm with dusk at 7:44 pm. On that day in 2022, we had cold weather, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 27 and 18 degrees. Debbie downer. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1945.
Good morning! Cloudy and 36 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. ๐ฅ There is a south-southwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. โ๏ธ
The past few days I’ve decided to take a break from social media and the blog ๐ so I can spend more time in the woods hiking and thinking, ๐ listening to podcasts and drinking ๐ป beer and being away from it all. Two nights is never enough, especially since I got used to remote work from camp. I could have taken tomorrow off but rain is coming.
I was on the fence about where to this long weekend โบ but settled on Brookfield as there was more trails I wanted to explore and the forecast while cloudy for Sunday and today looked less wet. I had been at Rennselearville State Forest three weekends ago and wanted to mix things up especially so I didn’t burn up too much firewood. Plus I like the rural landscape ๐ heading out to Brookfield. Longer drive though but a pleasant one.
Saturday I walked around Glimmerglass State Park ๐ and it was cold by the lake but in the woods with the wind ๐ blocked by the mountains it wasn’t so bad. I didn’t stick around very long as such. Deep blue skies and a pretty sunset ๐. Got to Moscow Hill Horse Camp ๐ด and set up camp then hiked over to Elmer’s Place and then bushwhacked over Grassy Hill trying to find a good view which didn’t exist but I did flush out a ton of grouse. ๐
By the time I got back to camp it was 6:10 and nearly pitch black but I had previously gathered firewood, set up the lights and propane, ๐ฎ had everything ready to go so it was a pleasant night. Had a big fire ๐ฅ though it was smokey at times due to all the wet wood, wet stuff in the burnables as I’ve been eating healthier. Heard a local fire station whistle go of ๐๐งโ๐ and thought I might have some unplanned visitors but no it was some other call. This place isn’t as remote as some places I camp. โบ Forgot to buy lighter fluid but once I got the somewhat damp and frozen wood going it burned well but was sparky until the wind died out. Saturday was a star filled night โจ and very mild which was nice.
Sunday was cloudy and breezy at times ๐ฌ๏ธ especially up on the hills. I hiked the bulk of the day, visiting most of the outer truck trails at Charles Baker State Forest ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ as I didn’t want to hike muddy horse trails. Checked out the Elmer Spring Campsite which is remote but accessible by vehicle and is really nice and private. โบ Hiked the Ledges Trail which was kind of interesting as was Truck Trail 7 which is cut into a ledge on the side of the mountain โฐ๏ธ. Icy in spots especially on the road but cold enough even the horse ๐ด trails weren’t too icy.
For today, Washington’s Birthday will have showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Not bad for the high country in in. Just wearing the vest. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ
While it hasn’t been sunny โ๏ธ the mid weather has been nice. Not having to deal with frozen water ๐ฆ, frozen food like milk ๐ฅ or eggs ๐ฅ is good for a change. The batteries are healthy and happy ๐ in my truck ๐, I haven’t had to start the truck all weekend long. Used the propane heater โจ a lot less than I have in recent trips, no icy propane lines to deal with. But it’s been cold enough that things have remained generally frozen in the ground, keeping the trails from being too muddy.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:16 pm with sun having an altitude of 36.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-34.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 5:01 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (249ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (256ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:40 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 6:07 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ Moon in the west-southwest (253ยฐ) at an altitude of 2ยฐ from the horizon, 228,419 miles away. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:41 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.
Today I decided to hike back and explore a few more ponds ๐ธ in the northern part of the state forest. Then midday head back home. I figure enjoy and explore as much of the land while I’m here. Then I’ll have to head home. I thought about taking Tuesday off but it looks like rain โ and maybe snow here.
Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 4am. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 23 degrees at 2am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 5th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 4am; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015.
Planning to go out and see the folks ๐ช when I get home, that is after showering ๐ฟ and unpacking. Then I want to run to the car wash ๐ and then Walmart for fruit and vegetables for the upcoming week. ๐
Brookfield looks cold and snowy for next weekend. ๐จ But I got my fun in. Saturday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.
I don’t necessarily plan on being back to Brookfield anytime soon though I might do my April trip to Cazenovia rather than the Adirondacks East Branch Sacandaga River for a change. ๐ป Easter is late this year and depending on how mild the spring is things could be greening up by then. Probably few black flies up north ๐ but I’ve been itching to do the Gorge Rail Trail is Cazenovia – Canestota for some time again. March maybe a camping trip โบ to Rennselearville State Forest again or Burnt Rossman. Depends on how much snow. It will be after the time change at this point.
Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until 8 PM Dusk ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:39 pm with dusk at 8:06 pm (Daylight Savings Time) in Brookfield. Earlier back in Albany. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, warm and temperatures between 74 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. Thinking spring thoughts ๐ญ on this cloudy but mild morning. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Snow fog, cloudy and one degree above freezing for the morning walk. ๐ซ There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. โ We ended up getting less rain than expected and no snow over night. So things melted but there is still snow around. Things will freeze again tonight. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. โ๏ธ
Kind of damp and chilly for the morning walk ๐ถbut the lack of ice is nice. Reminds me of the snowy icy day camping at East Otto State Forest in November or that day camping in December in the Vanderwhacker wilderness. Lots of slop for snow. Dawn is now 6:45 which means that except for the cloudest days the start of the walk isn’t pitch black.
Today was a breakfast reheat morning ๐ฅ which meant it was a quick and easy start to the morning and I set my alarm โฐ 10 minutes earlier to ensure that I maintain my schedule. I like my calorie reduction program it saves so much food and money ๐ต. With inflation every dollar is precious, especially if I can invest it while the market is down.
Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. West wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 12 to 17 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became snow by afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1950. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1949.โ
Taking the express bus ๐ in as today isn’t a session day. Looks like they’re running the big articulated bus this morning ๐which means that the driver will likely leave right on time or even a bit early as those pusher buses are slower to drive through traffic. So I have to put my phone down, shower ๐ฟ quickly leave right on time for the express.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 28.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-42.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 10 seconds over today.
I got milk ๐ฅ at Stewart’s yesterday and was disappointed that the expiration date is a week from Friday. Compared to the grocery store that’s good but it’s not as fresh as it used to be. Plus with my calorie reduction program I’m not drinking as much milk as it once did.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a low of 24 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Clouds and mild for the weekend ๐ฅ Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. South wind 10 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Good morning! Happy Tuesday from back in the cesspool. New York let’s go chase that money. Partly sunny and 21 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk ๐ถ on this third week of January after the long weekend, which seemed too short. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ก๏ธAnd then more rain this evening. I will pack my umbrella for the evening commute.
It’s back to work after the long weekend. ๐ง๐ป๐ผ Already got paid for the weeks gone by. Memories of the weekend come and gone loom large. Despite the thermostat set at fifty in my apartment I was much too warm with the heat. โจ I felt like a husky brought inside in the freezing weather. I’m sure I’ll feel hot all day in the office ๐ข and I’ll have my fan running.
Today will have a chance of rain, mainly after 2pm. Increasing clouds ๐ฆ๏ธ, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Got paid this morning ๐ธ before I could even get out of bed and look ๐ at the NY Post cover on the wall from Dan Halloran and the ducking money and his hair brained scheme to sell the New York City mayor-ship. If you are planning on putting a knife ๐ก though some ones back make sure you actually will be successful at killing them. Usually it’s the dumb criminals that get caught. Smart ones amend the law โ so their conduct is lawful.
Running a bit late on my morning walk so I had to walk past the smoking cars ๐ past the high school ๐ธ but whatever. I am taking the local ๐ to work so I have a bit of extra time to iron my shirt, take a shower ๐ฟ and pack a lunch. ๐ฅช I’m not going to pack a dinner, I’m hopeful it won’t be too late of a night. But I don’t care, once I get home ๐ก if it’s not raining I’ll do my evening walk ๐ถ and then head to bed after dinner.

It just back to the grind, ๐ ๐ข ๐ and Madison County was so nice but I know I’m working for a better future ๐ฎ. I was fortunate enough to have a job that I could work in Madison County for a brief period of time โณ but those days came and went so quickly, just as did Dr. King’s ๐ weekend. But so be it. Not the other side of the world, I could go back there at some point in the spring. ๐ท I’m thinking though for President’s Weekend I might be back at Rennselaerville State Forest. That is five weeks off though. I can’t complain too much, just a four day week and it will be the weekend before you know it.
Tonight will have a chance of rain before 2am, then a chance of rain and snow. Cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1957.
Fixed the chain ๐ on my wallet. I find old USB cables work good for tying my wallet to my belt and usually last a year or two. Now that’s real recycling โป and means that I don’t loose my wallet. ๐ค
Continued mild for the weekend though Sunday will be the best day. โ Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Probably cold enough that things will be frozen on Bennett Hill though for hiking I’m thinking. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. The coldest time of the year isn’t so cold.
Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Valentines Day โค๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:27 pm with dusk at 5:54 pm. Good morning! Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! ๐ I think his birthday ๐ was yesterday, so a happy belated birthday to him. Now when do we get a holiday to celebrate the life of Fred Hampton?
Mostly sunny and 15 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. โ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐. Cold start to the morning but it’s warming up fast especially as the sun gets above the hills and into the holler. ๐ก๏ธ
Cold enough this morning I started Big Red ๐ป for a while to be safe and ensure the battery ๐ would be good by the time to leave. I don’t like idling my truck too much while camping due to oil consumption from idling and the famous 5.3 lifter tick but I didn’t want a dead starting battery either in the cold. She started right up though. It was in the single digits last night. I was a bit concerned as it appeared some voltage was bleeding through the relay last night to the accessory battery from the staring battery when I was idling the truck, not sure what that was about, but it didn’t cause any issues. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
M. L. King Day will be sunny ๐, with a high of 32 degrees at 2pm. Typical for M.L.King Day. It’s the coldest week of winter on average though not this year. LA Nina and global warming from rednecks like me who drive big jacked up trucks and burn too much plastic. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light freezing rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ
Today I’m going to take down camp and maybe hike back to Tassell Hill from Chittenden Pond. โฐ It’s the highest point in Oneida County and I’ve never been there before. Might also hike around Brookfield Creek loop and or Glimmerglass though I’ve done the later a few times. Then I want to head home relatively early and take a shower ๐ฟ and wash the salt and sand off Big Red ๐ป and get ready for a regular session work day on Tuesday.

Good morning! Made it what is normally the coldest โ part of the year and I’m out camping ๐ in Madison County. What can I say, I’m kind of nuts ๐ฅ and I like burning shit ๐ฅ and spending time out in the country where things are real. ๐ For a while last night that fire was rip roaring and that smoke was black! Mostly cloudy and 13 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. โ There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐. The current wind chill is 2. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ Things will start to thaw out at Tuesday around 10 am. ๐ก๏ธI’ll be home by then then.
I planned to leave by nine yesterday and started down the road and realized that I didn’t know where my hat and gloves ๐งค were which are kind of essential for winter camping. So I ended up heading home and searching ๐ for a half hour until I realized that I stuck it in the cooler to carry it out.
Then I had to stop in Esperance for food and fuel. โฝ ๐ฅฉ The roads were just wet and salty all the way until I got out to Brookfield where they were snow covered. They don’t have a bare pavement policy in Madison County though the roads did have plenty of sand on them. I got to camp โบ on Saturday around 12:30 which left plenty of time to gather and chop wood for the night ahead ๐ฅ and set up camp and listen to a podcast then go for an hour walk in a beautifully snow ๐จ covered woods before dusk. ๐ And cook some sausages up for lunch. ๐ญ
Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ โ , with a high of 27 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal. North wind around 8 mph. I’ll believe it when I see it for the sun, โ so far this morning has been pretty cool and gray. I’d like some sun, preferably by midday to top off the battery bank ๐. The weatherman promised sun for today but I’m not that hopeful with the skies so gray.
Today I have planned out a ten mile hike around the state forest, ๐ด hiking the horse trails which should be well frozen this time of year. In the summer they can be quite swampy from the horse hooves churning things up but things are well cold and frozen today.

Going to be a cold night ๐ I may need to start my truck up to be safe before bed. ๐ But once I’m under the covers I should be good. But first I plan to have a big ol fire ๐ฅ just like I had last night.
Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until 40th Birthday ๐ when the sun will be setting at 5:11 pm with dusk at 5:40 pm. On that day in 2022, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 14 and 0 degrees. Maybe I’ll go camping then too. โบ LOL ๐. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.
