Memorial Day 2023

I guess it’s official that the unofficial start of summer has begun. That said, my summer really doesn’t kick off until legislative session is done though I expect next weekend not to be super busy so I will be able to get out of town. I’m just looking forward to a long quiet weekend totally off-grid with no work concerns to think about or address.

Good morning! Talk about a beautiful Memorial Day. Sunny and 68 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest. 🌞 There is a east breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

I have to say it’s been nice hammock camping up at Cole Hill State Forest. β›Ί Only sixteen miles, two traffic lights and speed zones, 22 minutes to home. Sure beats fighting traffic on NY 30 to get home and unpacked. Very few black flies, a nice breeze and good meals 🍴 cooked over the campfire. πŸ”₯ I liked the simplicity of it all and the taste of the meals. Since I’ve gotten into healthy eating, the quality of food has improved enormously and I don’t mind the lack of hang overs at all.

Memorial Day will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 11am. East wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

Not rushing to take down camp πŸŽ’ that said I don’t have that much gear to take down. I do want to have time to go for a stroll around the forest before heading home, unpacking and showering 🚿 before seeing my folks for Memorial Day. In the evening I might do a quick hike up Bennett Hill before heading home for the night. πŸŒƒ Then three session days this week, with only one likely late night on Wednesday and obviously the work picnic at six tomorrow. 🧺 I also have my doctors appointment for my yearly physical in the morning at 8:30 on the morning, I plan to leave by 7:45 am so excited can walk 🚢 there.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.8Β° from the due south horizon (-1.8Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294Β°). πŸ“Έ

I stayed up until after 11 pm last night πŸŒƒ but it was such a nice evening last night and I figured I could sleep in. Chicken, rice, onions, lentils, tomatoes in a wrap was dinner last night cooked over the fire. πŸ”₯ As you might have guessed, it was amazing. Lots of moonlight followed by stars ✨. Hiked 10 miles yesterday along the Long Path and truck trails, along with trips back and forth carrying food and supplies back and forth to the truck. πŸ›»

The sunset is in the west-northwest (301Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south (183Β°) at an altitude of 47Β° from the horizon, 246,793 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 7th. Southeast wind around 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1967.

The beautiful weather keeps rolling into the weekend. β˜€ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees. Fantastic. Not sure if it warrants a trip to the Adirondacks but I definitely want to be camping πŸ• and hiking somewhere fun and nice. Water temperature is still real cold. Truck cap camping again I’m planning on. It’s certainly more convenient that way.

Looking ahead, next Monday is 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ with dusk at 9:05 pm. Nice! On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1925. Before my time.

Muddy, But Dramatic

May 14, 2023 7 AM Update

Happy Mothers Day! 🌷

As ol Merle Haggard would say, there are two kinds of Mothers. I’ve been called a mother before but I’ve not had any kids.

Good morning! Partly sunny and 43 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest. 🌞 There is a north breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Kind of a cold start to the morning πŸ₯Ά sleeping in the hammock. I wish I had brought more blankets but I survived. I wanted to go as minimally as possible and it gave me an excuse to get up and going at day break like I normally do.

Went for a nice walk to start the day, 🚢 roughly five miles after taking down camp. Hiked some of the Long Path and the trail around the swamp. Had a small fire πŸ”₯ last night, nothing major as I was wilderness camping and it was breezy though the flip side was there was an established fire pit there. Next time I go up there I’ll make sure to bring a chair as sitting on the stone I stacked wasn’t all that comfortable. No bugs but by morning it was pretty cold.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 59 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Going to be a cool day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

The plan is to have a nice pan 🍳 of eggs πŸ₯š when I get home with lots of spinach and feta cheese and then get my clothes πŸ‘š unpacked from the wash yesterday, go to the car wash 🚿, get groceries, top of the tank in my truck, β›½ put the tire back on my truck πŸ›» and then maybe in the evening πŸŒƒ go for a walk. 🚢 Maybe just the town park or Five Rivers though I was thinking about Norman’s Kill Falls or maybe the Rail Trail to the Bender Mellon Preserve. πŸ‰

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 66Β° from the due south horizon (-4.9Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:30 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290Β°). πŸ“Έ

I saw at the trailhead πŸ“„ somebody left a note about the passing of Forest Ranger Tom Edmunds. He used to patrol Burnt Rossman State Forest but I only met him once. I think he got transfered to Vermontville in the Northern Adirondacks a few years back. πŸ‹οΈ Just another reminder how short life can be and why it’s important to eat healthy and exercise.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (297Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:11 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 8:42 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 37 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

I’m going to keep that campsite β›Ί in mind for Memorial Day Weekend in case I decide to do a quick overnight. Probably stay to close to home that holiday weekend as it depends on how much work I have to do. Hammock Camping is easy especially for a quick overnight. Next weekend is the Lupine Festival πŸ¦‹ and the first week of June if it’s nice I’ll either do Schoharie or Charles Baker and truck camp, especially if I have my bicycle 🚲 up and running by then. Second week of June I’ll probably be exhausted from work but I want to go with dad to the Gas Up, third weekend is Juneteenth Weekend and want to do four or five days at Piseco-Powley, taking off the Friday before Juneteenth Weekend so I can get the House Pond Campsite and if it’s more than three nights go up to Powley Place on the Sunday / Monday night when I can enjoy it without neighbors.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until the Gas Up β›½ 🚜 when the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.

 Reflection

May 6, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. β›Ί

Made it to the May camping trip, the first quote unquote summer camping season. The black flies are swarming but as far as I can tell they aren’t biting. I’m glad I’m not getting eaten alive in the Adirondacks and truth be told it’s a lot quieter than camping on NY 8 East Branch Sacandaga River with all the road traffic.

Kind of a chilly start to the weekend, especially with the wind. Mostly sunny and 47 degrees at the Burnt-Rossman State Forest. There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ.

I kind of played hookie and snuck out of work at 1 pm on Friday, that is with the big directors permission, β›Ί I wanted to get up to camp early so I could ensure I could get the Duck Pond campsite which sometimes is taken, and then have time to do some hiking before dark. Plus I had the time I would otherwise loose come next Wednesday so I made the leap.

I managed to forget my day pack πŸŽ’ at home. I realized it yesterday when I was in Middleburgh. What to use for hiking to have food and carrying water? πŸ’¦ I figured out a chair bag would work for that slung over my shoulder. It looks a bit odd but works okay. I think I need to update my packing list – things have changed but my packing list hasn’t kept up with the changes. πŸ“ƒ

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 63 degrees at 5pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 24th. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.❄

Black flies are out and swarming 🐜 but they aren’t biting. If it’s anything like yesterday, get into the darker parts of the woods away from water or come dusk they’ll be gone. I’m sure it would be worse in the Adirondacks.

But regardless it’s a nice morning. πŸŒ… I woke up at six o’clock like usual but decided after peeing to get some more sleep. Then it was coffee β˜• and oatmeal – banana pancake πŸ₯ž mix topped with blueberries. Going to read πŸ“– and listen to a podcast until around 10:30 then start a road hike, heading back to the woods 🌲🌳 after spring turkey πŸ¦ƒ closes at noontime. I want to check out the Rossman Hill Leanto and Looking Glass Pond 🎣 and then maybe head down to Panther Hollow along the Long Path.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 64Β° from the due south horizon (-6.9Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:24 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287Β°). πŸ“Έ

Hsd a loose connection on the inverter last night πŸ”‹ which kept it tripping out due to under voltage. Tightened it up and now it seems great. After all these years I’m really figuring out the system working out all the bugs. πŸ› That said, I’m already considering what I might do different on a future truck. πŸ›» I was thinking about how much I miss having the little truck for navigating the back roads – I’m always careful about where I take Big Red as he’s tough to navigate on the narrow roads and sways a lot on the rough roads which I don’t want to break my big expensive truck on.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (294Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:03 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 8:34 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:13 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 21 seconds over yesterday.

When I get back I want to do a wrap 🌯 with chicken πŸ” rice 🍚 tomato πŸ… and fresh spinach. Maybe include some tofu, mushrooms πŸ„ and hot sauce. Already my mouth is watering. πŸ˜‹ I was going to go that last night but I ended up doing fish with asparagus and tomato πŸ…. Also good. Next time I might bring more beer 🍻 and I might get a small package of cookies. πŸͺ I’m really trying to improve my diet but I think I can make exceptions in moderation especially if I’m planning a high activity day. 🦡That said in general I’m not going back on my now healthier and often more delicious eating habits.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1874.

Last night I did a nice hike πŸ‘£ down into Cole Hollow along the Long Path. Strangely enough I had never done much hiking down there. That Cole Hollow campsite β›Ί is pretty nice, I should keep it in mind especially if I’m going to Mine Kill Pool or planning to bicycle 🚲 ride in the Schoharie Valley. I feel like I could potentially ride right from there as the elevation is relatively low. Deep hollow though, no cell service or likely much radio service. Kind of like Betty Brook.

Too bad it was so cloudy yesterday night for the full πŸŒ• moon. It cleared out late but not until very late when I was in bed for the night. Maybe I can enjoy the moonlight tonight. I do enjoy how much quieter it is up here compared to what it would be on NY 8. Plus far less black flies, or maybe not they were really swarming last night when the sun was still up. It’s May everywhere.

Trying to upload some pictures this morning πŸ“Έ but the internet up here is a bit temperamental though at least I now have a card reader that allows me to upload photos taken by my good camera on the phone. πŸ“± But even that is a bit tricky as my phone doesn’t like the uppercase JPG extensions which force me to rename the files πŸ“‚ before I can even preview them on my phone.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Latest Sunset πŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:40 pm with dusk at 9:13 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

Burnt Knob Overlook

An interactive map and listing of the 280 peaks over 3,000 feet elevation listed in the Open Street Map database for New York State.

January 13, 2023 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 33 degrees for the evening walk in Delmar. ☁ There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. The skies will clear Sunday around 4 am.

Survived Friday the 13th πŸ‘» though I hardly noticed it. Busy at the end of the day. Rain stopped fairly early, got in 18k steps or eight miles for the day.

The work week has come and gone, πŸ’Ό it’s a three day weekend ahead. I won’t say it was an exceptional week but busy though most days I got home at the normal time. Thursday was wet. Friday morning at work was quiet for a while than it got busy.

Just out for the evening walk 🚢 after doing some cleaning and packing around the apartment. Toilet 🚽 needed a good scrub, as did the sink, counter tops and kitchen floor. I’m dirty, everything I own is dirty and worn but I kind of like the life. Maybe that’s why I idolize farming so much, especially the ramshackle, rundown farms in the hills. 🐐 Maybe tomorrow when I get out of town I can see some of them.

Getting ready to head out of town for a few nights of winter camping and hiking. β›Ί I still haven’t fully decided how far I want to head from home. Tomorrow night will be cold but Sunday and Kings day pretty nice. I’ll bring the microspikes but won’t need the skis due to a lack of snow basically everywhere except for the Adirondacks.

I’m just happy 😊 to be getting away. I just feel so trapped living in the city. Earlier in the week, one of colleagues from high school wanted to know when I planned to move back into the hills. β›° It’s a question I ask myself a lot. At the same time I keep hearing stories about people falling over and dying from heart attacks in their 40s and 50s.

Tonight will be cloudy ☁, with a low of 27 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. North wind around 10 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -24 occurred back in 1957.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter πŸŒ— Moon with 59% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:34 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:05 am, followed by dawn at 6:53 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:24 am in the east-southeast (119Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Sunrise is 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:09 am with sun in the southeast (127Β°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 35 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 33 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. Typical for this time of year. North wind 10 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1932. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1999.❄

I keep thinking about Mission Fifty, πŸ€” and thinking who I want to be in ten years. πŸ”Ÿ I often always took the easy way out, the slow and steady path. 🐒 I have the corner office, the desk in a private office with the brass lamp that overlooks the Capitol and the Hudson River and several garbage dumps and smoke stacks. But there is still so much wild country out there I’ve never explored. Maybe though I’m waiting too long to take the next step. But if I keep walking 🚢, try to eat healthier and save more πŸ’΅ I can build a better tomorrow.

In four weeks on February 10 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (251Β°) at 5:21 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 33 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 25 and 12 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 16 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 1955.

Looking ahead, tommorow is , Clean Your Computer Day 🧹 is in 4 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ is in 5 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ is in 5 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day πŸ€ is in 9 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ is in 12 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🀠 is in 16 weeks, National Nude Day πŸ‘± is in 26 weeks, Average High 70 πŸŽ‘ is in 33 weeks, September 🍎 is in 33 weeks, Labor Day Weekend Begins πŸ‘¨β€πŸ is in 33 weeks, Autumn πŸ‚ is in 36 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing 🌌 is in 10 months, Buy Nothing Day πŸ›οΈ is in 45 weeks, December πŸŽ„ is in 46 weeks, Bill of Rights Day πŸ“œ is in 48 weeks and Days are Getting Longer β˜€οΈ is in 49 weeks.

Looking for state land to wheel on? This list shows all of the conservation department-maintained DEC truck trails and public access roads that are more then a 1/2 mile long. This roads are varied, but most of them are dirt roads that take you through the back country. Town maintained roads through state forests are generally not shown on in this listing.

The Catskill Wilderness Areas

Trees and Mountains

The text of today’s fodder is based on the Catskill Park State Lands Master Plan, as revised in 2008. Maps were rendered by myself, using Quantum GIS and DEC Lands and Forests data.

Big Indian Wilderness

(Formerly Big Indian – Beaverkill Range Wilderness Area)

This wilderness is located in the Towns of Hardenburgh, Denning and Shandaken in Ulster County. It lies generally west of Oliverea and the Frost Valley Road, south of Belleayre Ski Center, east of Seager and Hardenburgh and north of Willowemoc and Claryville. The area ranges in width from 1 to 5 miles, is about 19 miles long and contains approximately 33,500 acres of land. Elevations range from 1,500 feet in McKenley Hollow to 3,840 feet where the state boundary crosses Doubletop Mountain. The mountains in the northeastern portion of the area are quite rugged, while those to the south and west are more characteristic of high hills. Water from the area flows into three New York City water supply reservoirs and the Delaware River Basin. Nine mountains or ridges with elevations of over 3000 feet make up the area.

Peaks

Doubletop* 3,860′
Haynes 3,420′
Big Indian 3,700′
Spruce 3,380′
Fir 3,620′
Eagle 3,600′
Hemlock 3,240′
Balsam* 3,600′
Beaver Kill Range 3,377′

* Maximum elevations given are not necessarily located within the Wilderness Area.

The forest cover is predominantly hardwood mixtures in various associations. Spruce and fir, while present at some of the higher elevations, are less noticeable here than in other Catskill wilderness areas.

Interior facilities consisting of foot trails and lean-tos are generally considered adequate.

A UMP for this area was completed in June of 1993.

Hunter – West Kill Wilderness

(Formerly West Kill – North Dome Wilderness, Ox Clove Wild Forest, and a portion of the former Hunter Mountain Wild Forest)

The unit generally lies within the following boundaries: New York State Route 42 on the west, the Shandakan Wild Forest and NYS Route 28 to the south, and NYS Route 214 on the east. The northern extent of the unit is County Route 6, and continues along a line 100′ parallel to, and south or east of, the edge of Spruceton trailhead parking area and the centerline of the Spruceton Truck Trail, to the junction of the Colonel’s Chair Trail. A corridor, 100 feet either side of the center line of the Spruceton Truck Trail, from the Colonel’s Chair Trail to the summit of Hunter Mountain, culminating in a circle 175′ in radius from the center of the chimney on the observer’s cabin shall be within the Rusk Mountain Wild Forest.

The unit contains approximately 27,000 acres of land, and inside it’s boundaries are found the named mountain peaks of Balsam, Sherrill, North Dome, West Kill, Sheridan, Hunter and Southwest Hunter. Hunter Mountain is the second highest peak in the Catskills at 4,040 feet, and portions of it’s summit, along with a fairly extensive area on the summits of West Kill, North Dome and Sherrill Mountains are within the Catskill High Peaks Bird Conservation Area, and are of special significance in that they provide habitat for high elevation spruce-fir inhabitants such as Bicknell’s Thrush and the Blackpoll Warbler, among others.

There are currently two lean-to’s on the unit, the Diamond Notch lean-to located just off the Diamond Notch Trail, and the Devil’s Acre Lean-to off of the Devil’s Path Trail. Waters from this unit drain into Schoharie and Esopus Creeks and then into the Schoharie and Ashokan Reservoirs, which are in the New York City water supply system.

Area statistics:

Approximate Area 27,000 Acres
Foot Trails 18 Miles
Lean-to’s 2
Parking Lots 5
Minimum Elevation 920′ Maximum Elevation 4,040′

Indian Head Wilderness

(Formerly Plateau Mountain – Indian Head Mountain Wilderness Area)

This wilderness is located in the Town of Hunter, Greene County and the Towns of Saugerties and Woodstock, Ulster County. It lies generally west of the east boundary of the Catskill Park, south of Platte Clove, east of Devil’s Tombstone Campground and north of Lake Hill and Shady. The area ranges from 1 ½ miles to 3 ½ miles in width, is eight miles long and contains approximately 16,800 acres.

Elevations range from 900 to 3840 feet and the four major mountains in the area are visible against the skyline from all directions. Echo Lake, the only natural lake in a Catskill wilderness, is located in the east-central portion of the area. Water from this eastern section flows into the Kingston and Saugerties water supply reservoirs, while drainage from the central and western section flows into two New York City water supply reservoirs. Six named mountain peaks over 3,000 feet in elevation dominate the area.

Peaks

Plateau 3,840′
Indian Head 3,573′
Sugarloaf 3,800′
Olderbark 3,440′
Twin 3,640′
Plattekill 3,100′

The forest cover varies from extensive oak stands on the eastern most slopes to mature spruce-fir on top of Plateau Mountain. An excellent mature stand of northern hardwood and hemlock occupies the slopes south of the Saw Kill.

Echo Lake, unique to the Catskill wilderness, is very popular for undeveloped camping. A small number of scattered primitive tent sites with fire rings have been established and public camping is limited to their capacities.

Public access is provided by several foot trails entering the area, including the old road from Meads to Overlook Mountain.

Area statistics:

Approximate Area 16,800 Acres
Roads 6.6 Miles
Foot Trails 24.1 Miles
Cross-country Ski Trails 5.6
Lean-tos 3
Designated Campsites 10

Public Use (visitors/year) 8,000
Length of Boundary 33 Miles
Minimum Elevation 900′
Maximum Elevation 3,840′

A UMP for this area was completed in October of 1992.

Slide Mountain Wilderness

(Formerly Slide Mountain – Panther Mountain Wilderness Area)

This wilderness is located in the towns of Shandaken, Denning and Olive in Ulster County. It lies generally south of NYS Route 28, west of West Shokan, north of the Peekamoose Road (County Route 42) and east of the Frost Valley Road (County Route 47). It surrounds the Woodland Valley Campground and abuts the Sundown Wild Forest to its south. This area ranges from 1 to 10 miles in width, is about 13 miles long, and contains approximately 47,500 acres of land. The wilderness boundary is 118 miles long.

The terrain is rugged and steep with elevations ranging from 1,100 to 4,180 feet. All water draining from the area eventually reaches three New York City water supply reservoirs by way of the East and West Branches of the Neversink River, Rondout Creek and Esopus Creek. Twelve named mountain peaks with elevations over 3000 feet exist in the area. Of these, six may still be considered trail-less to the extent that they have no marked and maintained trails.

Peaks with Trails

Slide 4,180′
Peekamoose 3,843′
Cornell 3,860′
Wittenberg 3,780′
Table 3,847′
Panther 3,720′

Lone 3,721′
Rocky 3,508′
Friday 3,694′
Van Wyck 3,206′
Wildcat 3,340′
Balsam Cap 3,623′

The forest cover consists of nearly every possible mixture and association of hardwood and softwood trees native to the mountain region. While hardwoods predominate higher elevations are often covered with red spruce and balsam fir.

This area receives more public use than any other Catskill wilderness. Superb vistas are found on Slide, Wittenberg, Cornell, Giant Ledge and Panther Mountains. Access via foot trails is available from the north, south, east and west.

Area statistics:

Approximate Area 47,500 Acres
Foot Trails 35.3 Miles
Lean-tos 3
Parking Lots 10
Designated Campsites 29
Public Use (visitors/year) 23,000

A UMP for this area was completed in March of 1987 and revised in October of 1998.

Windham – Blackhead Range Wilderness

(Formerly Blackhead Range, and North Mountain Wild Forests, and portions of Windham High Peak, and Black Dome Valley Wild Forests)

The combination of these Wild Forest areas creates the Windham – Blackhead Range Wilderness Area, which lies within the Greene County towns of Cairo, Hunter, Jewett, Windham and Durham. The classification of these former Wild Forest areas was changed to Wilderness because their combined area comprises approximately 17,100 acres and contains rugged, high elevation land that clearly exhibits wilderness character. This newly classified area has seven named mountain peaks over 3,000 feet in elevation.

They are:

Peaks Black Dome 3,980′
Windham High Pk 3,520′
Blackhead 3,940′
Stoppel Point 3,420′
Thomas Cole 3,940′
Burnt Knob 3,180′
Acra Point 3,100′

The unit also contains six unnamed peaks over 3,000 feet, which range from 3,040 feet to 3,540 feet in elevation. Of the five highest peaks in the Catskills, three – Black Dome, Thomas Cole and Blackhead – are in this unit. This concentration of 13 peaks over 3,000 feet, within an area of approximately 28 square miles, with limited access, structures and improvements (30 miles of maintained foot trails and two lean-to’s) make the Windham – Blackhead Range Unit an area with excellent wilderness character.

A fairly extensive area of old growth forest can be found on this unit at the higher elevations, along the ridge stretching from an area west of Thomas Cole Mountain to Blackhead Mountain, and on Windham High Peak. The presence of this old growth forest, with its distinctive flora and fauna, add to the wilderness character of the unit. The unit also includes the headwaters of the Batavia Kill and, to the south over the Blackhead Range, the headwaters of the East Kill. Both of these rivers flow into Schoharie Creek, and are an integral part of the New York City Watershed system.

The western boundary of this unit shall be the east side of the Elm Ridge Trail, Black Dome Trail leaving it within the Elm Ridge Wild Forest, continuing north along the drainage to the Catskill Park boundary. The southern boundary of the unit shall be the Escarpment Trail approximately one half mile south of Stoppel Point to a point on the Escarpment Trail where it comes closest to the eastern Forest Preserve boundary. Both North Point and Stoppel Point will be within the Wilderness area. Lands to the south of the south edge of the Escarpment Trail in this area, will be in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest.

Because the Windham – Blackhead Range Wilderness surrounds the smaller Colgate Lake Wild Forest Unit, and because they are linked together by public use, the Unit Management Plans for the two units shall be contained in one document.

Area statistics:

Approximate Area 18,0000 Acres
Foot Trails 30 Miles
Lean-tos 2
Parking Lots 1
Minimum Elevation 980′
Maximum Elevation 3,980′
