Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar for my evening walk. ☁ Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡️

Monday’s almost Done. Not a bad evening walk, not real cold no ice but the moon hasn’t risen enough to be visible on the horizon. Windy late but a fairly mild night by January standards.

Tonight will be cloudy ☁, with a low of 29 degrees at 8pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Maximum wind chill around 28 at 8pm; Light west wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. I finally got that mouse trap I ordered a week and a half ago. 🐁 I am as excited as a pig in shit about that. Finally got one of those Rinne bucket traps you snap on a five gallon bucket full of water 💦 and they fall in, the peanut butter 🥜 flap drops and they drown. Their popular with farmers and snake owners as they can catch several mice in a night and they don’t involve toxic chemicals and can be used indefinitely. I figure just dump the buckets in the woods out back and it’s clean food for predators. Been waiting for a long time for the trap and I’ve not had a lot of luck lately with the spring traps or sticky traps. Both worked for a while till they stopped. I’m just annoyed the mouse chewed through the hole I patched a few years back.

Tomorrow is the State of the State Address. 🎤 If there was ever a day I avoid the Capitol or Empire State Plaza that would be it. I’m not sure how many protestors there will be this year but I’m quite comfortable watching them from the window of my office 🏢. When I take the local in the bus 🚍 drops me two feet from the Alfred E Smith building where I work and I can slip in and upstairs without the craziness.

I sent the state a $250 estimated tax payment for Q4 of last year. 💸 With work and everything else I missed my Q3 payment though I should be good as I usually only average about $1,200 a year in taxable dividends. It always angered me a lot to have to take money 💵 out of my pocket to cover dividends I’m reinvesting and not taking but I was doing the numbers the other day how important reinvesting dividends is to a secure future. 🌎 That said, I probably should have paid estimated taxes to the fed as I’ll probably owe but those limits aren’t as tight. I think my taxable income will still be low enough this year to free file 📂 which is nice.

January 8, 2023 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 26 degrees during my moon lit evening walk here in Delmar. 🌖 Calm wind.Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. 🌡️

I was going to stay home this evening after walking about ten miles today 🚶 but with the weeks schedule ahead and the moonlit night I decided to go out and walk this evening. Making good progress on breaking in the boots, they’re pretty comfortable now 👢 but I figured give them a rest and then do my evening walk with the old ones. I’m really trying to maximize them as much as possible with inflation.

Walked out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐸 in the morning, then visited John Wolcott up in Colonie for a few hours and then stopped at Colonie Center Maul to look for reasonably priced dress shirts. First time I’ve been into a shopping maul since the pandemic. I looked at Boscov’s first but ended up at Macy’s. 👨🏻‍💼 They didn’t have a lot reasonably priced. I did find one I liked ultimately. That said, I think I’m going to take a risk order online next time from like Amazon or Ebay take the risk and if I find something I like order more.

I felt so out of place at the Maul. 👨‍💼 Especially those fancy department stores like Macy’s and Boscovs. I liked the old Sears better, but truth be told, I’d rather be in the woods 🌲 or a barnyard 🐮 then any maul. The whole maul environment seems so oppressive, with so much future garbage on shelves. 🗑 I guess people need stuff and want fancy things for their suburbanite homes, but I can’t imagine spending money on half the things they sell at mauls. 🚜 Of course, that’s why on Facebook I look at farm tractors and implements so much lately. But at least they’re not all shiny and fancy. 🏚 The more time I spend in suburbia the more I want to have my off-grid homestead, as simple as possible. Maybe even no electricity. 📺 Don’t get me started on the television.

Later on I did an evening hike in the Pine Bush 🌲as it got darker out. The crowds thinned out before dusk, I did the loop from the Discovery Center past the landfills. I really don’t get up to the Pine Bush as much as I should but I don’t like driving 🚘 and try to avoid the city as much as possible. I would and probably should visit John more too but like the Pine Bush I really avoid the city as much as possible. Northway traffic is so heavy. Then I picked up a few more groceries I forgot at the store 🏬 on Friday. Should be good for the week now.

Money is a key part of Mission Fifty, but there is so much I can do learn and become better also over the upcoming decade. Soft skills can make it easier to succeed beyond age 50, provide income and so many other benefits — and they are as key to Mission Fifty as saving and earning in the mean-time. 👨‍🏫 When that day comes in 2023, the adventure is really just starting, but the next ten years, on the mission gives me a change to develop who I want to me as I undertake whatever my goals are to be implemented with Mission Fifty. Skills, life experience, are equally as important as money as I look to the next ten years. 📈

January 7, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. 🍃. It got cold out once again with the wind though needless to say it’s more like early March than January.

Moms 75th birthday party was fun 🎂 we had it at a Mexican restaurant in Saratoga. I find it hard to believe my mom is 75 and I’m going on forty in a few weeks, though my focus is entirely on Mission Fifty. I don’t think she appreciated when I pointed out at this point I was more focused on my fiftieth birthday than 40. But time goes by so quickly as an adult 👨🏻‍💼. Been five years already since I’ve been too old to be a Young Democrat. Where does time go? It’s always nice to spend time with mom. 🤶 Never know if I’ll be able to join her for her 80th. Time is precious as it compounds.

But the more I think about it, the more Mission Fifty becomes what I think 🤔 about. Older people keep telling me I’m rushing my life and wasting time ⏳ but I’m really excited to think about where I could be in ten years if I maintain and build on my progress. While I’ve long known about the power of maintenance of effort, dividends and compounding – the brushing up on financial literacy textbooks and video – really reminds me how important it is in all parts of life from health to work skills to knowledge. Don’t overextend yourself and don’t sweat a down day but know things add up over a decade. I keep telling myself that this is the decade that will define so much of my remaining years and I should work every day to build 🏗️ towards Mission Fifty in all parts of my life.

Begrudgingly the heats back on and my thermostat is turned up to 50. Had to do it with freezing weather expected ♨ and the inside temperature dropping into the forties. The main reason for heat inside in my view is to keep the pipes from freezing. I kind of admire those who live without running water in their households as they don’t have to waste so much energy on heat especially when they’re not home. I really hate modern life, I look forward to the day I can live a simpler life.

January 6, 2023 Night

It’s a nice evening 🌃 for me evening walk after a rainy start to the day. I’m wearing my old boots 👢 as my new ones are bothering my ankle in part because they’re not broke in. I got the higher ankle boots to protect my ankles but they’ve not worked out good. I’m hopeful though. I will wear them to work on non session days but keep my old boots for walking around town until they are fully broke in.

Christmas Party 🎉 at work was good, but odd with the holidays come and gone and people busy with session things. The bananas 🍌and oranges 🍊I brought went quick but I brought much too much milk 🥛. I kept the extra milk in the fridge and brought it home and froze it. I’ll thaw it when I run out of milk. It’s odd as the last holiday party was pre COVID but I still wore my muzzle 😷 during most of the party. I was thinking with all that spare milk I need hogs. 🐽 Maybe some day. But first my investments have to grow.

I just can’t wait until it’s warm enough to have the windows open 🔲 for the summer season and it’s easier sleep. 🛏 That said, I do better going to bed before nine most days.

I was looking at the January 6th memes on Facebook 🤜 thinking what a tragedy the whole thing was all together. So many lives and families ruined for the sake of stupid politics. People who chose a life in politics often loose their lives and their freedom in America 🇺🇸. We like to pretend that’s not true but I would argue that those who die for their country without pay or benefits are the true American heros. While I think the whole rigged election thing was sham – Biden won fairly under the various state and federal rules in effect in 2020 – you got to respect anyone who raises their voice based on their convictions. But I would argue personal and family well being is far more important than the country as a whole. Making money 💵 to put food on the table 🦃 is more important than any ideological belief you may have.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! A January 6th, holiday party day at work. I skipped my morning walk 👣 due to the rain and my ankle being sore from the new boots 🥾 and because I need to go to the store and get milk, bananas and fruit for the holiday party.

Shopping 🛒 first this morning and then I’ll catch the electric bus 🚍 ⚡ downtown. I swear the electric buses are always the hottest buses to ride, which isn’t great for bringing milk on 🥛 but I think it will be okay. I thought they used diesel heaters on the electric buses but it turns out to be all just heat pumps moving waste heat and resistance heating. They keep adding more and more electric buses.

Today will rain, mainly before noon. 🌧 High of 40 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Light and variable wind. I keep penciling ✏ in my ideas for Mission Fifty, my plans for my life at age 50 and how to get there. I have been doing a lot of research into financial literacy and how to make a better budget and minimizing expenses on things that really don’t bring you joy. 💵 Mission Fifty isn’t primarily about money but having adequate resources and spending them in ways that is meaningful to you is key to living a good life. 🚜 I’m in a position where I can turn my life around if I only do the right thing for myself and don’t get distracted by silliness like consumerism and politics, the two things that destroy so many lives – things we should remember on this January 6th, a day when thousands of lives were tragically sacrificed for politics. 😔

I don’t know it feels warmer than that in the land of the Delmaritian ♨ but certainly darker than that. It will certainly be colder than that by the weekend but still above average. I figure they’re saving the really cold weather for my birthday 🎂. It won’t be forty out when I turn 40.

Took care of the dentist bill I got yesterday. Last summer my insurer sent me a check for the “out-of-network” visit because my dentist screwed up the paperwork. I set the check I got aside and then waited to hear from the dentist. The bill was the same as the check, so I just online paid my dentist and deposited the check. I thought about getting the SEFCU app and doing a mobile deposit, but I don’t trust my phone is secure, that is compared to my computer that is offline a lot of time, and I keep up to date with Linux security updates.

Tomorrow is the rescheduled holiday party at work 🍪 🎄 so I’m going to need to get to the store 🏬 tonight. Been running low on groceries for a while as I did only a quick shop last week after washing my truck and returning the shit ton of beer cans that had been accumulating since spring. ♻

I did some looking though, and maybe I should just take the risk and order one online. Sears is closed now, but I was reading online that Boscovs and Macys also sell dress shirts, and I can try one out there. I don”t want to spend a lot of money, but I do want comfortable button down collar shirts I can wear with a tie and sport-coat for work. Can’t totally look like a hillbilly on session days.

Looking ahead, next Thursday is Coldest Day Recorded in Albany 💨 when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm. I think it’s likely we will be closer to the 2020 record then that one from 1970 but only will tell.
