May 9, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Next Thursday is Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ. Seems like it was just yesterday we were looking forward to temperatures in the 40s during the cold of winter. Six weeks to summer, eight to Independence Day.๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Been remarkable how cold and rainy this spring has been. Overcast and 57 degrees. โ˜ Calm wind.

I walked down to the express bus ๐Ÿš today and I’m the only one on it. Good thing I walked down there ๐Ÿšถ it makes the drivers trip worthwhile. While this bus is usually lightly subscribed compared to early buses its been a while since I was the sole rider.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Not a real nice day but no rain and relatively mild. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 82 degrees. Last May was so warm compared to this year. The record high of 93 was set in 1979. 1.6 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

The sun will set at 8:04 pm with dusk around 8:36 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 17 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after midnight. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 21st. South wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1958.

Saturday continues to look sunny, and Sunday won’t be the washout it once said it would be. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 60.๐Ÿ˜Ž Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. I don’t think I would mind a good breeze, as it would control the black flies to an extent and dry things out. I still willl bring a shit-ton of DEET. Don’t think I would want to go kayaking though, as it could be pretty choppy. Sunday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 40%. That actually isn’t that bad for a typical summer weekend, especially when it falls on a Saturday. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

I think I’ve decided to head north this weekend. โ›บ I’d like to camp down at Stewart Landing before the summer crowds arrive. It looks like the rain will end relatively early Friday night so I won’t be setting up in the rain. Saturday should get progressively warmer although I’ll probably be in a hoodie a good portion of the day. Maybe fish the Middle Sprite creek and possibly drive down to Little Falls and spend half the day at Moss Island and walking the rail trail then return in the evening to camp and walk down to the lake to fish. Sunday doesn’t look really good, but might be good for fishing with the clouds and only light rain. I might hike back on Sunday to Tamarack Vly or hike some of the trails around Rockwood Lake.

The following weekend is the Albany Pine Bush Lupine Festival ๐Ÿฆ‹, which I will be tabling, so I’ll be stuck in town for that weekend. But it’s fine. The following weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, I’m planning to head up to the East Branch for that to fight the black flies, unless maybe it’s exceptionally warm, then I might consider Vermont for swimming in Grout Pond. Although I can think of some nice swimming holes along the East Branch. I’d probably hike back some of the trails there.๐ŸŠ Not sure how many of those sites fill up, but there are enough obscure ones that I’m sure I can find one, especially if I leave relatively early on that Friday afternoon. I don’t expect super nice weather for Memorial Day Weekend, as in recent years it’s been pretty cool and rainy, as it’s still spring time. One year was hot, but that’s the exception not the rule for Memorial Day Weekend. Independence Weekend is much nicer. ๐ŸŽ†

As previously noted, next Thursday is Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:12 pm with dusk at 8:44 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 72 and 51 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1991.

 Stack

April 25, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Three weeks until the average high is 70 in Albany. ๐Ÿฎ But still a pretty nice day here in the Sieamese Pond Wilderness. Blue skies and sunny and 53 degrees at the end of the East Branch Sacandaga River Gorge Trail. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

This afternoon will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 4pm. One degree below normal for Albany, which is similiar to a typical day around April 24th. Not terrible for being in the Adirondack Wilderness in the spring. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Really not a cloud in the sky. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which tapered off to light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„That’s the year they laid the cornerstone of the office building I work at far away from the wilderness I’m currently at.

Yesterday I kind of got stuck in the office ๐Ÿข until 5:30 so I didn’t get on the road until 5:45 but I drove straight out to Amsterdam so I was up to camp around 7:45. I kind of had some trouble getting the lantern ๐Ÿฎ started after replacing then again breaking a mantle but then I got it working after fiddling for a few minutes. It kind of was getting dark and I forgot to bring a bright ๐Ÿ”† light bulb ๐Ÿ’ก but with the flash light I finally got it going. Then I got the fire started ๐Ÿ”ฅ which really took off with some of the brush and other stuff that they had cut out for the new privy they built up at the campsite. ๐Ÿ’ฉ I was the first one to use it. The lights were up and the fire going good by 9ish and I stayed up listening ๐Ÿ‘‚ to podcasts until around 11:30. An obnoxious barred owl occasionally woke me up during the night with his who? Who? But so be it. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Today I hiked back to the East Branch Gorge Trail aftee hiking around Fox Lair for a while which I took pictures with from my other camera. ๐Ÿ“ท This time the trail wasn’t so icy unlike the time I tried it in 2014. ๐Ÿšถ Still its a pain to find the trail head, the best way to find it is to bushwhack following the East Branch until you reach the somewhat challenging to cross Kibby Pond outlook then follow it until you spot and old woods road and then ford the creek on the rocks and look for a herd path across from the old woods road. You never leave the view of the East Branch although at one point you do get quite a way above the gorge on the herd path up a good sized mountain. I was pretty underwhelmed by the end of the trail which had a pretty unimpressive designated tent ๐ŸŽช spot and then a relatively small water falls, maybe at most 20 feet tall. Further down the trail where the gorge is narrower is more impressive.

The sun will set at 7:52 pm with dusk around 8:22 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 57 degrees. Should be a delightful evening once I get that campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ a roaring and some good eats cooking. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over yesterday. Almost to the point of the the fourteenth hour day.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly after 5am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1972.

Tomorrow will have periods of rain. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง High of 49 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 27th. Southeast wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1990. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1993.โ„

Today is definitely a beautiful day ๐Ÿ˜Ž but maybe not so much tomorrow.๐Ÿ˜ฐ โ˜” I’m going to enjoy today and tonight I guess tomorrow I’ll head home. If it’s going to pour than be followed by cold rainy weekend no reason to stay up north. I would have liked a four day weekend but I had a nice big ass fire last night and the hike back to the East Branch of the Sacandaga River Gorge is pretty nice although I have to admit I’m a little bit under impressed the falls. The trail really ends after the narrows of the gorge and the most scenic part is relatively unaccessible. But the best is yet to come of the summer …

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:49 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 72 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1991.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, showers, mainly before 11am. High near 44. West wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees.

In four weeks on May 23 the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 8 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 81 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 72 and 49 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 1964.

Looking ahead, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 3 weeks, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 8 weeks, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 10 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 14 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 5 months and Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 23 weeks.

 Looking at the Lake

April 22, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy with some clearing to the west and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 46 degrees. Made for kind of a nice sunset but I do wish it was a little sunnier all of today. The skies will clear around 10 pm.

It was a nice enough of an evening that I went to the park after work for a while with a book. ๐Ÿ“™ It was one of those self improvement type books that encourages you to think more about who you are and how to make a better future for your and make life more enjoyable. I’m really kind of bored with many parts of life, I’m kind of looking for new adventures and things to do while I’m still in New York making and saving money.

Looking for new ideas on things to do, not just the same trips year after year after working my job all week long. It’s all gotten too routine and life is going by too quickly. My desire to change is part of the reason why I’m thinking in a few years of getting a bicycle to replace my truck. ๐Ÿšฒ I feel like not having a vehicle would force me to adjust my life, have new experiences. Truck camping is fun but its all become the same. โ›บ Maybe this year once the black flies are done, I’ll do more wilderness camping with the hammock and packing light.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 21st. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, it was clear in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1975.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 76% illuminated with the moon rising at 11:28 pm. The moon will set at 9:04 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Thursday night with partly cloudy skies. The Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Friday, May 17th. The sun will rise at 6:01 am with the first light at 5:32 am, which is one minute and 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 10 hours and 14 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around May 27th. I’ll take a late May day without the black flies and the humidity. Maximum dew point of 47 at 7am. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had sunny. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2007. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Tomorrow I shop ๐Ÿช and pack for camping. โ›บ The plan is to set up camp in the Southern Adirondacks for two nights starting Wednesday after work. Friday looks fairly wet, so I’m thinking about driving up to Tupper Lake and maybe camping and hiking around there on Saturday then drive home on Sunday, maybe stopping a few places on the way back home. Probably take an easy drive back down along NY 30 both ways as I hate expressway driving. I think I’d rather do that then sit in the rain โ˜” on Friday plus I haven’t been up to the Tupper Lake area in years, I think it’s five years since I camped at Horseshoe Lake and Jones Pond in that area. Not bringing the kayak, there is plenty to do on foot and I want to use the solar on the sunny days.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 58. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 40 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees.

I’m still thinking about possibly one more camping trip before Memorial Day Weekend โ›บ, namely that Moss Island and pre summer season trip to Piseco-Powley Road but worse comes to worse that can wait until June. Going to be a busy month for me. A trip to Madison County and Rogers Environmental Education Center is another real possibility as is a trip to Spectator camping where I did last Labor Day Weekend. I figure I should travel and camp these next two years as much as I can if I’m thinking about going car less in 2021. That said, most of the places I’m planning on going this year are pretty ordinary, I kind of wish I could do something new and different for a change. I really need to think about more wilderness camping in the back country. It doesn’t have to be that heavy miserable big pack frame we used in Boy Scouts with no technology at all.

In four weeks on May 20 the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 29 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 71 and 48 degrees. The record high of 91 degrees was set back in 1962.

I’m really fascinated by possibilities and power of the Processing Modeler in QGIS. ๐ŸŒ By plugging different filters together, extracting and manipulating raster data and vectorizing it there is some pretty remarkable things I could dream up. There is a lot of great things you can do with digital mapping I’m just discovering now after all these years with QGIS. I think running out of state land to map in many ways is a blessing as it’s forced me to become more creative with the stuff I do with map data and add other useful features. Too often in life I find myself in a rut lacking creative energy or a desire to try something new.

I really should find time to rebuild my electronic VMS sign for my office but I think I need more wire and I’ve been loathe to spend more time with the soldering iron. ๐Ÿ”ฌI should spend more rainy days on that kind of thing.

It’s still pretty early by I’m tired. ๐Ÿ˜ด I should finish putting my wash away and get to bed. Each night I keep retiring earlier but that’s fine because I wake up earlier. A good night’s sleep is important for doing a good job at work. Plus I have to pack for camp tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 2 months, Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 9 weeks, July ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ is in 10 weeks, Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚ is in 12 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 16 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 19 weeks, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 5 months and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 24 weeks.

Mountains lost in fog

March 2, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clouds and 30 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. No snow today, not are there much for stars this evening when I went for my walk. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

This morning I met my parents at Jakes Moon for breakfast ๐Ÿณ then came home and rode the excerise bike for a few while, then went to Walmart to buy groceries and out to my parents house for dinner. ๐Ÿ˜‹ I fixed the loose chain ๐Ÿ”— on the excerise bike ๐Ÿšฒ so now it doesn’t keep coming loose and rides much better than before. Worked on some blog posts ๐Ÿ’ญand then went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ.

Ever since I did the hard reset on my phone and reinstalled the software it’s been working great. ๐Ÿ“ฑMuch faster now ๐Ÿ‘with many software updates, and I’m very impressed with the performance. I bought a new battery ๐Ÿ”‹ for the phone as the current one isn’t holding charge for a long time ๐Ÿ”Œ and I want to get more life out of this phone if possible.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 11pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 14th. Relatively mild for this time of year. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. That had to have been a nice evening. ๐ŸŒƒ The record low of -10 occurred back in 1950.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain and snow, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around February 25th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about going for a walk on the rail trail in the morning ๐Ÿš†then over take the bus ๐Ÿš over to John Wolcott’s house in the afternoon to continue working on his history project. ๐Ÿ“šA year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 42 degrees. I’m really not sure how big this snow storm will be. I’ve parked on the grass so it will probably turn out to be nothing. The record high of 64 was set in 2002. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

Tomorrow night will snow. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 25 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 14th. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. โ›„ Maybe I did make the right choice to go grocery shopping and out to the folks house today and park ๐Ÿ…ฟ on the grass. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1950.

Today in 1989, Twelve European Community nations agree to ban the production of all chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the end of the century.๐Ÿ‘ I think you can say that they were mostly successful on this although occasionally you hear about CFC releases into the atmosphere from the new sources, the hole in the ozone is healing itself. ๐ŸŒŽ

I do get annoyed when people get all political on Facebook. ๐Ÿ‘‘I know that the temptation is to respond back but the smarter option is just to hide the post from those people ๐Ÿ‘Œbut that’s sometimes harder than you would think. The nice thing about the blog is I have complete control over the content and commenting is limited to only certain sections of the blog. ๐Ÿ“„ For years I didnโ€™t allow any comments on the blog at all. ๐Ÿ’ญI do allow some now though. Blog posts are a better format for sharing ideas even if it means fewer eye ๐Ÿ‘€ balls.

In four weeks on March 30 the sun will be setting at 7:19 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 32 minutes and 48 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny, mist and temperatures between 50 and 37 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 51 and 31 degrees. The record high of 86 degrees was set back in 1986.

Looking ahead, Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ is in 8 weeks, 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 9 weeks, June ๐Ÿน is in 13 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 16 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 19 weeks and Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 25 weeks.

I’m getting tired, I probably should get some sleep. ๐Ÿ˜ด I want to get an early start tomorrow morning. ๐Ÿ’ค

Following Snowshoe Trail Up Blueberry Hill

January 30, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? A sunny and fresh snow on a Hump Day, of course. Six weeks to 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ†. Partly sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Doesn’t feel that cold out with the sun plus I left the heat turned up in my apartment in preparation for the couple of days of cold weather to come. After last night’s snow storm are 9 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒย Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Going to be really nice then.

I took the local bus to work this morning ๐ŸšŒ as I slept in a bit later than normal because I did not sleep well. ๐Ÿ˜ฉAs expected, yesterday was an awful day at work but I made it through it. Roads are pretty good this morning and the bus is running relatively close to on schedule though. I’ll make it through today with toothpicks holding my eyes open and move forward to tomorrow. At least there should be a lot of sun and blue light in my office, for the first part of the day.

Today will have increasing clouds ๐ŸŒžโžกโ˜, with a high of 22 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -9 at 6pm; Breezy, with a light west wind increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Watch for snow showers between 3pm and 5pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow after noon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible but still could impact our evening commutes. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

The sun will set at 5:06 pm with dusk around 5:36 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 12 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be -7. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 21 mph breeze โ›… from the west with gusts up to 34mph. Yuck. Today will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of -5 degrees at 5am. 20 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -16 at 11pm; West wind 7 to 15 mph. I’ll definitely have to leave the cabinets open and the heat up tonight if I want a warm shower come the morning. ๐Ÿšฟ In 2018, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 12 degrees at 1pm. 20 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -15 at 6am; West wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1913. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ„

Yesterday was a tough and crazy day at work. I got 53 work emails in one day, responding back to 33 of them.๐Ÿ“จ I had to run over to the Capitol a few times, write many memos and postage requisitions. Some days at work are less pleasant than others. Hopefully I’ll get caught up on work sooner than later. Maybe I should have stayed late last night, but I was so tired after the insanity around the place yesterday.๐Ÿคช

Despite the crazy day at work, I left at 5:10 andย gotย home a little before six which wasn’t so bad with the snow. The bus was running a little bit late but I still got home earlier than I expected.๐Ÿ˜ย Normally, it’s closer to 5:40 – 5:45 PM with regular traffic.ย And despite the snow last night, this mornings commute wasn’t too bad at all, as the roads were pretty good.

My birthday dinner was fish sticks and corn. ๐ŸŸ I even cracked open a beer. I could have gone out but I was really tired. I’m not complaining, I got the super-sized bag a few weeks ago do its very economical. This morning I had waffles. Cleaned the counter up well but I still have a problem with ants. I got to get some ant bait, probably tomorrow when I go out to John Wolcott’s house. I hope I can get Big Red out of park in the cold. I think the next time I have Big Red in the shop for his oil change that I no longer do myself I will see if they can replace it at least get working the sensor again.๐Ÿ…ฟย It’s fine when it’s a bit warmer, so I don’t know.

I mounted the old hard drive in the DVD slot on my laptop. ๐Ÿ’พ Worked great although I think I might have gave cracked some of the bezel clips when I removed the bezel from the DVD drive. I know they do sell them on eBay for not that much money so if I decide to get one — I’ve seen them listed for as low as $5 including shipping. I don’t necessary need a new one, just one without broken clips to replace the broken one, and also one to put on the DVD drive for when I swap them — although I can’t remember the last time I actually used the DVD drive.๐Ÿ’ฟ

I had a nice evening walk, lots of snow outside for sure.ย I was really surprised how much snow was on the ground when I went for my evening walk last night around 8:30 PM,ย โ„ย almost 6 inches at that point. Didn’t get much more snow though late into the night, maybe a another two inches. It was deep walking through the snow, especially the sections of the sidewalk out past Adams Station Apartment Complex later in the night.ย ๐Ÿ‘ข

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012.

Lots of sun this weekend, and actually relatively nice and warm on Sunday for a change. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 27. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. I want to get some glue so I can fix my ski boots and skis again before heading out on Sunday to maybe do some cross country skiing, maybe in the backcountry of Partridge Run. โ›ทShould be a great time skiing, assuming the snow isn’t too sloppy with the warmer weather although in the hill-towns I can’t imagine it will be that high above freezing.

In four weeks on February 27 the sun will be setting at 5:42 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 12 seconds later then today. The later sunset will be nice, especially as dusk is much later. In 2018 on that day, we had sunny and mild day with temperatures between 56 and 28 degrees.ย  An early taste of spring. I do remember that last year, I walked outside to the Capitol. Typically, you have temperatures between 38 and 20 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1997.

Looking ahead, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 6 weeks, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 13 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset โ›ฑ๏ธ is in 18 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 103 weeks. I am almost looking forward to the black flies at this point.

Setting Sun

January 2, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? First Day Back to Work in 2019, of course. But more important: Three weeks to National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€. That cheese fondue I had at my parents house last was pretty good but I think I’m done for cheese until about Cheese Lovers Day. Alsoย one month until Ground Hog Day,ย although it’s been a fairly mild start so far to twenty nineteen, although Iย wish New Years Eve had been nicer.ย ๐ŸŽ‡

A beautiful sunny day for heading back to work in the new year. Mostly sunny and 24 degrees in Delmar. There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Sun angle has improved enough come January that it’s not right in my eyes walking down to the express bus. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Not bad as we are in the cold of winter when the average high is only 31. It’s January, although it doesn’t feel that way as it’s been relatively mild and I was out camping last weekend.ย I did make it down to the express bus stop this morning in plenty of time, in part because I installed the clock in my bedroom.๐Ÿš

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 6th. Fairly mild for sure. We only look forward in the new year. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the morning. A year ago, we had with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 20 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

The sun will set at 4:34 pm with dusk around 5:05 pm, which is 54 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a increase of 52 seconds over yesterday. Within a month, we will have 10 hours of daylight, which is pretty nice.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 28 degrees at 7pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 22nd. Around the time they pass the one house budgets in Albany. Warming up through the night. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2018, we had clear skies. It got down to 7 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1970.

Yesterday I broke down and bought a clock for my kitchen. ๐Ÿ•— After eleven plus years of living in my apartment, I broke down and got a clock in my kitchen, as it makes it much easier to determine the time,ย ๐ŸšŒย meaning there is a better chance I can catch the earlier bus to work. I don’t like spending money on things I don’t need or later have to discard,ย but I found that I often don’t have my phone on me in the morning for the time,ย when making breakfast. The clock was only $4 and while it takes a battery, the similar one I have had in the bathroom for years (after debating for a long time if I needed one),ย ย has only had it’s battery replaced once before, like every two years. It uses a quartz timer to drive the second hand ahead, it’s very conventional old-fashioned style hands clock, that kids supposedly don’t know how to read but I find very easy to follow up on.

My goal is this year to catch the earlier bus more often to work,ย ๐ŸŒ„ย taking the express bus in whenever I don’t have to wear a suit or get all dressed up for work.๐Ÿ•ดThe walk is good way to kick off the morning, plus it’s a much nicer commute then taking the local. The scenery is nicer, and it’s a smoother ride on in. Plus I like the refreshing nature of the morning walk.

Speaking of walking, I went for aย nice walk last night,ย and it wasn’t too bad of a walk.๐Ÿšถย Rather mild, good weather for a change. I am kind of glad that January was a lot more mild then it was last year. Every day when I look at the display in my bedroom, with the past year weather displayed, it’s always a bit shocking how much nicer this year has been.๐ŸŒƒ

I have not planned any road trips for a while,ย but I might go out camping somewhere for the Martin Luther King holiday if it’s not too cold.ย ๐ŸŽฃย Possibilities include going out to Balsam Pond in Chenango County to camp and ice fish, maybe NY 8 in the Adirondacks or maybe Charles Baker. I’m really digging how they plow Brown Road past Truck Trail 8, although I guess if the snow is deeper, I would have to park and haul gear back to the campground.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:28 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 48 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.

As it rose

November 9, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Two weeks to Buy Nothing Day 🛍๏ธ. Thanksgiving is coming early this year as is the long weekend after it. Partly sunny and 31 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind.

Kind of a cold start to the morning, I really need to consider turning the heat on soon in my apartment. 🏠 It’s a bit chilly when I get out from under the sheets. That or may be put on a sweater. Beats though where I was staying in Syracuse and the heat was blasting every morning.

Today will rain, mainly after 2pm. โ˜” High of 44 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. I would consider leaving for my camping trip but not with cold rain and snow expected today. Tomorrow though will be nice so I’ll probably leave early for that. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1975. 10 inches of snow fell back in 1900.โ„

This morning I have some code I want to work on for the blog, then I’ll head down to the library to do some internet work and get some books.📚 I also want to swing by the town hall and get my hunting license and later this evening – maybe fairly late after the Friday shopper are gone – to pick up food for my camping trip including coffee โ˜• which I realized this morning I lack. I’m not a big coffee drinker but on a cold autumn morning that will be nice.

The sun will set at 4:38 pm with dusk around 5:08 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain โ˜”and 42 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 57 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain before 5am, then a slight chance of rain and snow. โ˜” Low of 35 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2017, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow I’m heading up to the East Branch of the Sacandaga River for a long weekend through Tuesday morning.โ›บ It wasn’t my first choice but with the possible lake effect snow expected today, these sites are close enough to an all season road that I won’t have to worry about icy roads. Noisy yes, but at least it’s a good option and many of the sites have cellphone reception. That’s nice for passing the long nights.

My hope is to get a site with good sun so I can leave the truck shut off all weekend but the batteries fully charged. 🔌 I will set up a tent so that I can warm up by the heater and possibly hot tent if the nights are cold. Expecting a dusting or maybe a couple of inches of snow there, I would likely go for a hike back to Cod Pond and maybe back along the Stewart Creek Trail. I’m hoping not too much snow or I’ll have to haul my gear back to the site. I doubt it based on the snow fall predictions and the fact that it will be sunny and above freezing on Saturday. I will come back most likely on Tuesday or maybe Veterans Day Monday as I have to work on Wednesday through Friday. Wednesday I’ll be out out in the field to work, then Thursday it’s back to the Alfred Smith Building via the bus service. I look forward to returning to the old routine.

I checked the oil and it was down about half a quart after the many miles I drove for work this past few months, so that has been topped off. I wasn’t concerned about it. I do need to gas up the truck this evening. โ›ฝHeadlights better aimed help driving on the rural roads at night although I still don’t particularly like driving at night on those rural roads. I’ve noticed no more suspension issues lately but I haven’t cranked the wheels to a full lock lately. I think it will be fine until I schedule service later this month. Yesterday I started to hook up the shunt for the new amp meter for the solar panel but stopped when I realized that I needed more connectors. Maybe I’ll play around with it come next week.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Buy Nothing Day 🛍๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.
