Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ then down to work for another busy day. Depending if I have to work late I might go out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center to look at the birds ๐Ÿฆ. Hopefully I’ll get back my truck today.

Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

I am thinking of heading up to the Speculator area again on Thursday. โ›บ Another working weekend but it will at least be cooler in the mountains. I could change my mind though. Some of the beaches are open like Glimmerglass but it looks like the campgrounds at Charles Baker State Forest are still closed. ๐ŸŠ

As previously noted, next Tuesday is Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 84 and 55 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1888.

Heading Around Streeter Lake

This morning dropping off Big Red before work ๐Ÿš˜ then head home ๐Ÿก and work from home. I double checked to make sure I have my charger ๐Ÿ”Œ for the laptops. Hopefully it will be ready to be picked up this afternoon. I will get a good walk out of this ๐Ÿšถ and hopefully won’t have to worry about the uneven wear any more and the tires will pass inspection in November.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 13th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. It seems like a good weekend to head north. โ›บ It’s disappointing that the road to the Potholers is closed and that Mine Kill pool will be closed but I expect to be busy this weekend so I’ll probably end up in the Speculator area. I still have to decide if I want to bring my kayak or not. Probably leave on Thursday.

From the blind

June 13, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. A bit chilly this evening.

So today I pretty much stayed close to home. ๐Ÿฆ Did some bird watching and nature walking at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and worked on my laptop a bit uploading the fixes to the blog. Got groceries at the sprawling Shop Rite – they have a lot more choices and different things that Aldi buy its so much more walking past crap you don’t want and navigating the aisles during a pandemic when you want to be in and out as fast as possible.

Been reading up and refreshing my memory on the money supply ๐Ÿ’ต and the velocity of money. ๐Ÿ“ˆ Basically the federal reserve is buying assets left and right to flood the market with money to keep interest rates low but because most wealthy people are just sticking the money in stocks and bonds its not causing much inflation right now. But in the future ๐Ÿ”ฎ that’s to be determined.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 44 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 7th. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 42% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:56 am, followed by dawn at 4:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:18 am in the east-northeast (57ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:01 am with sun in the east-northeast (64ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 22nd. North wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1892.

In four weeks on July 11 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (301ยฐ) at 8:33 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 86 and 71 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1936.

Looking ahead, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 1 week and the Mine Kill State Park Pool opens in two weeks ๐ŸŠ .

 Belden Lake

June 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day from the Adirondacks, of course. Two weeks to Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ†. Filtered sunshine and 62 degrees at the Speculator Village Park. โ›… There is a southeast breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 56 degrees.

So camp is taken down once again ๐ŸŽช and after work today I’ll most likely head home. I’m out of food and ice, well except for some dry goods like peanut butter and jelly, some mustard and eggs. ๐Ÿฎ I dumped out the last cup of so of milk in the milk jug in the cat hole ๐Ÿ’ฉ before breaking camp because otherwise I figured it would go rancid and it already was two days expired. I had to take down camp as my three nights in I e location, as the regulations state, had expired. Plus I don’t think today will be a very good day for solar power. โ˜€

To start out my day, I walked down to the boat dock at Speculator Village Park โ›ฒ with my binoculars to observe birds ๐Ÿฆ and ducks until the first email ๐Ÿ“ง or call ๐Ÿ“ž of the day comes in. I know at eleven o’clock the texting program gets underway and that should keep me busy the bulk of the day besides all the other memos ๐Ÿ“ written, database imports โซ and all other necessary tasks.

Today will be scattered showers between noon and 1pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partlu cloudy โ›… , with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 14th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Southeast wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2008.

I have my bathing suit and beach towel ready ๐ŸŠ should the weather be nice enough and I get a break to swim during lunch or after work. I’m not sure how stormy today will be but I’m sure we might get some large booms from thunder โšก. While I’ve been washing my hands and rinsing out my hair and shaving each day, I could definitely use a good shower ๐Ÿšฟ when I get home as it’s been a week since I’ve had a good scrubbing. Been cool enough up north that I’ve not been swimming.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the borthwest (304ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:39 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 31 seconds with dusk around 9:13 pm, which is 34 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 10:01 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 11 mph with gusts up to 21mph. Today will have 15 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 44 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 9pm, then a chance of showers between 9pm and 3am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 67 degrees at 1am. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10pm. South wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1980.

Tomorrow I’ll run to the laundromat ๐Ÿ‘š and continue unpack and get things cleaned up. It’s yet another work day but I can work remotely from my truck while at the laundromat. I’ll also need to get groceries. ๐Ÿฒ I’ll call ๐Ÿ“ž the shop ๐Ÿ”ง about them looking into the wear pattern on the tire, have them rotated and a synthetic oil change. I know the service light isn’t on yet but I always like to do oil changes early to avoid sludge build up. โ›ฝ

On this day in 1964, United States Senate breaks a 75-day filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, leading to the bill’s passage. ๐Ÿ‘ That was a big change back then and fifty years later I expect even further changes in our country. I’m glad police ๐Ÿšจ reform and defund the police has gotten so much attention – I think it will make a big difference in the future of our country.

Cool but sunny this weekend and at least in Speculator. Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 49 at 8pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

Saturday I’ll probably walk out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿšถ for bird watching ๐Ÿฆ and then Sunday I’ll probably hike at one of the local preserves before going out to mom and dad’s house for Father’s Day. ๐Ÿ‘ช I’ll bring my own fork and knife ๐Ÿด along with plate, and set up the screen tent ๐ŸŽช to help further social distancing. That said it’s at least in New York that pandemic is winding down at least for round 1.

I expect it’s likely that the Capital Region will be in Phase 3 of the reopening ๐Ÿข and I’ll most likely be working downtown next week. Do I have any evidence of that? No. I’m just waiting to see when CDTA reopens. ๐Ÿš I’ll probably be taking the 719 back and forth to work ๐Ÿ’ผ as that bus is rarely crowded, especially the 8:26 downtown.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until the Latest Sunset of the Year ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:42 pm with dusk at 9:18 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 85 and 56 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

 Silence

June 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Clear and chilly around 55 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. โ˜” There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. That breeze along with the dampness of the rain earlier make it kind of chilly.

I did lay back in the hammock for a bit until I decided it was getting cold and I put my jeans, ๐Ÿ‘–, hoodie and vest on. I don’t think I was fully prepared for how chilly this evening would be after the rain shower and strong winds pushed through followed by the rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ. Stars โœจ are real pretty now that I’ve cut the lights for the night ๐ŸŒƒ but it’s cold so after sitting by the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ for a while I hit bed in the truck.

While this campsite โ›บ is quite beautiful ๐Ÿ—ป it is very exposed to the weather. Sunny days are hot. The wind is always quite strong here. ๐Ÿ’จ It’s a great place to be cold and get a sunburn. A few of the days working under the screen tent ๐ŸŽช may have pleasant but they sure where hot.

It was nice hiking ๐Ÿšถ through logging roads down from Mud Pond Road to NY 30, through mixed age woods and some more recently cut areas. Part of the less used part of the logging road was a bit muddy but the recent cut areas are well maintained. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒDefinitely see a lot of grassland birds including grouse that are relatively uncommon in other parts of the Adirondacks. Seeing the pig rock ๐Ÿฝ up close was neat – I’ve only driven by it before and while I’m not sure if Jessup River under NY 30 has currently enough water to paddle ๐Ÿšฃ it looks like good fishing ๐ŸŽฃ. More photos to come when I get home.

I am afraid my love ๐Ÿ˜ of apple juice ๐Ÿ as an alternative to beer ๐Ÿป due to the recycling returns โ™ป restrictions due to Coronavirus caught up with my after dinner in the sense I had to run to the bucket shitter ๐Ÿ’ฉ twice after dinner. That plus the greasy sausage patty despite the cheese and sauce toping did not help. At least mornings are nicer with no hang over. ๐Ÿ˜– Feeling fine now but I was hot and I pounded the apple juice rather than the water ๐Ÿ’ฆ when I got back to camp.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 46 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 14th. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1958.

Tonight will have a Full ๐ŸŒ Moon with 97% illuminated. The moon will rise at 9:51 pm. Late enough for some star viewing โœจ before the moons light pollution drowns out everything. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:18 am in the east-northeast (57ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Sunrise is 19 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:01 am with sun in the east-northeast (64ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 40 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 57 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. North wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1999.

I am still kind of ruminating about the loss of Eli the family dog ๐Ÿถ I hadn’t seen in weeks due to the pandemic. I knew he wasn’t doing all that well and he was getting old for a dog but it just bothers me a lot about so much of the world ๐ŸŒ keeps moving on while we social distance. Virtual life isn’t the same as human contact. I should call ๐Ÿ“ž mom again on Monday. I’m probably going to camp for one or two more nights at a different campsite and work up here for a few days before heading home. I’d still like to do some shore fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at Mason Lake.

In four weeks on July 4 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:41 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 5 minutes and 56 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had hot and humid weather, mostly sunny and temperatures between 91 and 66 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 104 degrees was set back in 1911.

Looking ahead, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 2 weeks.

North 3

June 5, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Today 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ. Partly cloudy and 70 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. โ›… There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 61 degrees.

A pretty nice summer morning. โ˜€ Laying back in the hammock – with the breeze, Picardin on the legs and a hammock sprayed with Permethrin its not too buggy. ๐Ÿ›

Rained for a while โ˜” last night but by morning things were clearing out by morning. Things were just a little damp by morning.

I expect it will be a nice day for working remotely from up in the woods. ๐Ÿ’ป I good cell phone reception ๐Ÿ“ถ here and ample sun for solar power. Maybe even take the laptop and work from the hammock as I look out at the clouds and mountains or if I do need to work from the table use the binoculars for bird watching. ๐Ÿฆ

Today will have isolated showers before 11am, then isolated showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 22nd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10am. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1925.

Tonight will have a Full ๐ŸŒ Moon with 99% illuminated. The moon will rise at 8:45 pm. The Strawberry ๐Ÿ“ Moon is on Saturday, June 6. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:18 am in the east-northeast (57ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Sunrise is 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:02 am with sun in the east-northeast (65ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 41 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and one second over last night.

Tonight will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 60 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 27th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had heavy rain in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1971.

The lantern post I bought to use the lantern in the tent๐Ÿฎ worked quite well. I am quite happy with it. Still having some problems with the lantern with one of the mantles not getting proper gas pressure. I may try to take it apart if I have some downtime today at work. But I don’t know – it might be a pretty busy day at work. ๐Ÿ“

In four weeks on July 3 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:41 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 6 minutes and 53 seconds later then today. In 2019 on that day, we had hot, partly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 90 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 102 degrees was set back in 1913.

Campfire After Sunset

June 4, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly sunny and 61 degrees at the Speculator Village Park. There is a west breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 56 degrees. It was neat watching the deer graze along the river early this morning.

So I’m up in the Adirondacks for an indeterminate time period ๐Ÿ—ป like most of us are living through these days. Working from my phone and the Speculator library Wi-Fi, ๐Ÿ“ถ might as well take advantage of the nice weather and remote work before the office reopens at some point in the near future. Wearing a banada over my face won’t be fun while working, although I have a private office at my current job ๐Ÿข so I doubt I’ll have wear a mask in the office.

It should be a nice weekend up north, โ›บ although I’ll have to watch out for thunderstorms and plan appropriately with the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ bank to keep things properly charged. I have enough food and supplies through probably Monday but I’ll need ice from Speculator before then so I can get additional supplies as needed if I decide to stay longer. I will have to move to a different campsite if I stay beyond Sunday but next week is kind of up in the air. Once I’m set up at camp I probably won’t drive anywhere, instead just hanging out and relaxing and walking wherever I need to go like down to the swimming ๐ŸŠ or fishing ๐ŸŽฃ hole.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 10th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 9am. It should be a great day outside. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1919.

Today’s plan between the emails and the messages and calls ๐Ÿ“ž is to some birding ๐Ÿฆ and enjoying the sun before setting up camp. After 11 am I expect a fairly busy day but my laptops are fully charged and ready to go so I anticipate no issues. ๐Ÿ’ป Plus I should have ample solar. โ˜€

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 69ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 29 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 44 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the southeast (134ยฐ) at an altitude of 14ยฐ from the horizon, 230,416 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:56 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 7 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 15th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 4am. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1990.

I am glad that the state is forcing stores to take back cans ๐Ÿป starting this week. While ultimately I found eight cans in my refrigerator I didn’t buy any more beer for camping in ground I didn’t have a lot of space for empties. I didn’t want to have to make a special trip to the transfer station to dispose of them – it’s not like you can burn aluminum cans. โ™ป Most Coronavirus is passed by close physical contact indoors so it seems silly to ban returns. Instead I bought apple ๐Ÿ juice which is not only cheaper but also slightly more healthy even if it junk food with all the natural sugars and calories. But I plan to be splitting wood and hiking this weekend so I’ll have plenty a chance to burn calories.

Next week I’m going to call the mechanic ๐Ÿ”ง about the toe in on the rear left tire which is now showing very noticeable wear. I think something was bent when I damaged that shock bushing back in 2017. I’ve known about the issue for a while but rotating the tires addressed it but now that things are getting worn down its more noticeable. I was hoping to wait to do repairs and get a full alignment when I got new tires in a year or two but it needs to be addressed sooner than later. I know it should have been the responsible thing to do some time ago. ๐Ÿ™

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. West wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Maximum dew point of 45 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees.

It’s actually going to be pretty cool up north ๐Ÿƒ but hopefully with the sun won’t be too bad. I left the kayak home ๐Ÿšฃ as I didn’t want to have to bother taking it on and off for the needed solar power for work.
