This morning is a drag ๐Ÿฒ

Puff the magic dragon by lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. It’s cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. Fog around, and it’s in my head this morning and I’m not stoned but maybe I wish I was as I stumble around this morning skipping my morning walk.

So I can get at least some steps in ๐Ÿ‘ฃ taking the long way around the High School ๐Ÿšธ superblock to the express bus ๐Ÿš as I have enough time. Breakfast was a bowl of light red kidney beans with sugar free maple syrup and a little bit of Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. I have a bit of sore throat this morning and maybe that’s my excuse for my dragging ass, though truth be told it’s the gray skies my struggle to recover from summer vacation. ๐Ÿ› I was in bed shortly after 9 pm and slept well but had to run to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ a few times during the night as I had a bunch of lemonade ๐Ÿ‹ after my evening bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride to Voorheesville.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 78 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Lighyg south wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

If the weather was going to be better today โ›ˆ I would definitely be riding into work. ๐Ÿšฒ It was a nice bicycle commute yesterday, although my ride home was a bit heavy with all that sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ, zucchini, cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’ and that watermelon ๐Ÿ‰ I had loaded into the back of my bike. Howard Street does get a bit crazy ๐Ÿš˜ at 5 o’clock but once I hit the bike path under 787 and do the climb out of the valley it’s a bit of serenity. Tomorrow I’ll ride down to the dentist ๐Ÿฆท and then to work.

Yesterday I rode close to 30 miles or maybe more. ๐Ÿšฒ Not sure though I did GPS log it. Sunset is getting earlier ๐ŸŒ‡ and I was running late ๐Ÿƒ after dinner but it was still a great ride. That said my mountain bike is so slow compared to the road bikes and it’s boring ๐Ÿ’ค to ride on asphalt but take it to the places I like to camp โ›บ it’s wonderful and it beats walking ๐Ÿšถ around town. It just annoys me as road bikes fly by on the bike path, and general boredom of the bike path, but I remember it’s a compromise compared to the great places I can get up in the wilderness. I am thinking the gravel/stone dust of Pennsylvania’s Pine Creek Gorge might be fun this autumn.

I’ve been kicking myself for not stopping in Triangle on my way home from the Finger Lakes to get more zucchini and have been desperate ever since. ๐Ÿฅ’ The zucchini I had in the Finger Lakes was so good that all I’ve been dreaming of all week is more zucchini. Fried with onions, some MSG, some pepper and a bit of stevia and olive oil it was so good. Eat way too much but there are worse foods to over indulge in. Sweet corn also for dinner and a plum for dessert. ๐ŸŒฝ This morning as I mentioned it was red kidney beans and syrup, and lunch is going to be onions, rice with peas and lentils and then some edamame thrown in. Haven’t had edamame in a few weeks, and it’s good, mostly because of vacation.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 63° from the due south horizon (-7.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:27 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:06 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:35 pm, which is one minute and 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:15 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind around 8 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Another summer weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ– Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

This weekend I’m thinking of either riding or driving out to Our Families Harvest farm stand ๐ŸŒฝ in New Scotland to stock up on produce then maybe some mountain biking / trail riding in the Albany Pine Bush ๐Ÿฆ‹, I think that could be a lot of fun. Do it early as I see thunderstorms โ›ˆ๏ธ and rain popping up by afternoon. Then maybe go to see John and get some groceries at the Walmart in Albany. I specifically like those little pearl onions they have, I haven’t seen them at other grocery stores. They’re like candy and you can eat them raw after you peal the outer skin or toss them in a frying ๐Ÿณ pan and they quickly get brown and extra sweet. Maybe head a bit further north in Colonie and do some of the Canalway trail but I doubt it. Quiet day Sunday, maybe Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and go out and see the folks. ๐Ÿ‘ช

I asked the secretary ๐Ÿ—“ to schedule no meetings for me on Thursday and Friday of next week, lest I want to head up to the Potholers for a long weekend and to ride Piseco-Powley Road on Blackie ๐Ÿšต and camp at House Pond Campsite โ›บ assuming it’s open. I could go for a nice few days at the swimming ๐ŸŠ hole there maybe with some clams again ๐Ÿฆช and tons of fresh farm produce ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿฅ’ ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿง… to toss in the beer and clam broth. We’ll see, it depends on the weather. I could use some time floating on the tube โญ• and cooling in the Potholers before summer is done. I can’t do the following week as the other director is off. Right now the second half of next week looks good, and we might finally get some warmer and drier weather. One last stand before summer is done. I’m also thinking of seeing if I can work remote or take a personal day that Friday before Labor Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ so I can get camp set up early on Friday, then work or have fun as time would allow.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:16 pm with dusk at 7:43 pm. It will mean darker mornings especially for walking ๐Ÿšถ although I should be able to walk for a few more weeks after then at 6:15 as dawn is about a half hour earlier and I do that most of the winter at any rate. The cooler air will be refreshing and help wake me up when those days come.

South in Gorge

What would you do if… ๐ŸŽถ

If you were listening to Joe Crocker it would be sing out of tune, and if it was David Crosby it would be find her dead on the floor. Maybe the Wonder Years weren’t as wonderful as people remember them to being. But let’s bang a gong and get it on. After all it’s the morning walk and I need to leave at a reasonable hour as I’m riding Blackie into work today and need to stop on the way mostly to get dental floss but also bananas and maybe some MSG.

Good morning! What day is it? Farmers Market Day, of course. I want zucchinis so badly. Mostly cloudy and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 am.

Not sure if I actually need to do my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ if I’m taking Blackie ๐Ÿšต to work but I’m up and going and kind of like the quiet time known as walking to get my day started. Since getting my bike I don’t get in nearly as many steps as I used to do. I think I’ll do Cream of Wheat ๐ŸŒพ and chia seeds, with fresh squeezed lemon ๐Ÿ‹ with stevia for sweetness, topped with plain non fat Greek yogurt and frozen wild Maine blueberries. ๐Ÿซ Just describing that seems so mouth ๐Ÿ‘„ watering because it is. Good for a sugar high and energy โšก for cycling to work.

Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ˜๐Ÿ‘‰ โ˜€ , with a high of 83 degrees at 5pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 63 at 11am. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The ahigh last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2001.

Going to be a nice day to ride into work. ๐Ÿšฒ I figure Friday too after my dentist appointment. ๐ŸฆทI thought about heading out of town this weekend but I really need a week off from life on the road, packing and unpacking. I’m thinking the following week of taking Thursday and Friday off for a long weekend at House Pond Campsite floating on the tube โญ• and riding Piseco-Powley Road on Blackie if it’s nice.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:28 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (293ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:07 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:37 pm, which is one minute and 20 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:17 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 74 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 24 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday all day my butt was dragging ๐Ÿ˜ด especially come the afternoon. I’m not sure why I got a goodnight sleep, had a protein and fiber rich breakfast of eggs and spinach, and nothing was extraordinary on Tuesday. I went to the planning board meeting yesterday on yet another development in the Albany Pine Bush. This time they’re proposing yet another warehouse in Colonie in prime Pine Bush in a wildlife corridor. ๐Ÿ‘ทTown is mostly concerned with the coloring of the fencing and the stucco which they want to look like every other warehouse. Developer and the government Pine Bush commission is good as they’re building on an existing site. We’re not at Save the Pine Bush as it’s more Pine Bush being developed.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 30th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1955.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

It’s so tempting to head out of town ๐ŸŒฒ as summer is rapidly coming to a conclusion but I know the responsible thing is to stay closer to town and I’m tired of packing and unpacking all of the time, taking down and setting up camp โ›บ. I really should visit John at least one last time, his wife needs help with him and time is ticking for him. โณ It would be fun to take Blackie ๐Ÿšต out on the Erie Canal Trail and maybe the Albany Pine Bush Preserve in the evening. And just rest and restore myself. Eat some fried zucchini with lots of onions. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿง… Maybe but not likely hammock camp overnight on Cole Hill.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:35 pm with dusk at 8:03 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 90 and 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1953.

Caywood Point

I have to say this has been the best vacation in my life โ›บ ๐Ÿšต ๐Ÿฆ ๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿ›ถ

The weather has been absolutely fantastic, my days packed with adventures and cold ice cream and swimming holes. I’ve ridden like 250 miles through farm and forest land. Many nights with campfires, watermelon cold beer and fresh squeezed lemonade. Dinners with Vadellia onions and peppers, lemon pepper chicken and salmon, beer boiled clams with sweet corn, zucchini and tons of fresh fruit with Greek yogurt. Many amazing sunrises and sunsets. Just not nearly enough hours in the day.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. I do know what this means, after 10 days all good things must come to an end. ๐Ÿ˜” Don’t look so sad, life goes on this world keeps turning. Summer 2024 is but a few winks ๐Ÿ˜‰ of the eye away, as is a long weekend trip up to the Potholers maybe next weekend or in two weeks. Then maybe an extended Labor Day Weekend at Spectulator Tree Farm to close out the summer. Except for the hammock, flags, bucket shitter and the kayak on the roof of the truck my home for nine short nights has been taken down. ๐Ÿ›ถ

Stunningly beautiful morning like so many this past week. Mostly sunny and 68 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. โ˜€ There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. I heard the seven o’clock chime ๐ŸŽ on my phone and it was followed by the eight, nine and ten o’clock chimes on my phone about five minutes later as I took down camp, carefully packing things for the return trip to Albany.

This morning was a delightful breakfast ๐Ÿฅฃ of cream of wheat, freshly squeezed lemon, a bit of stevia to make it sweet plus chia seeds ๐ŸŒฑ for fiber and the remaining Greek yogurt I had so it wouldn’t go bad without ice. I also had the last hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš a little while after for additional protein and as I wasn’t sure if it would survive to mid day without any more ice in the cooler. Plus two cups of cold black coffee โ˜• not that I really needed it as I made sure to get my eight hours of sleep yesterday for the long drive home.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 79 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 1st. Maximum dew point of 62 at 5pm. East wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1900.

I told myself that I should leave Ithaca by 4 pm to ensure my arrival home by 7 pm, ๐Ÿก well before dark and so I have time to unpack and run to the laundromat and grocery store before bed ๐Ÿ› at 9 pm. I’d like to get back into the habit of rising at 6 am for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ and to bed nightly at nine, as I find that’s the most natural sleep pattern for me. Of course if I ride my bike ๐Ÿšฒ to work I can get a later start as I won’t need to do a morning walk before catching the express downtown. ๐Ÿš Do plan to resume doing the stairs to the 18th floor twice a day at work ๐Ÿข at least when I’m working downtown for that extra push of intensive cardio each day. Truth be told, I really should plan on leaving Ithaca at 3 pm knowing I’ll inevitably be running late, ๐Ÿƒ stopping at farm stands ๐ŸŒฝ and pee breaks ๐Ÿšป, parks and scenic vistas. ๐Ÿ“ธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-6.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:43 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 8:52 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:33 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over yesterday.

Thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ today I’ll go to Buttermilk Falls State Park ๐Ÿž and hike the gorge and swim. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ I don’t love the idea of parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ in that tight little parking lot so I might find a city park to park at or on street, and ride some of the Ithaca bike ๐Ÿšฒ trails to get there, bypassing delays at the toll booth to boot not that it matters as I have an Empire Passport ๐Ÿ›‚.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 1am and 5am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5am. South wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 76 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1994.

Yesterday I mountain biked ๐Ÿšต riding both gravel and trails at Sugar Hill State Forest. Posted many pictures to Facebook some on the blog. About a fifteen mile loop. Swam at Watkins Glen pool ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ but didn’t ultimately go floating on my tube โญ• on Seneca Lake as it was too cool and the lake choppy ๐ŸŒŠ by afternoon. Rode another ten miles down Rock Cabin Road, ๐Ÿšฒ along old Airport Road at Catharine Valley WMA, then down to Montour Falls. Rode over to Glen Dairy Bar ๐Ÿง via the Catharine Valley Trail and the Watkins Glen High School ๐Ÿšธ and had a great hot apple pie ๐Ÿฅง sundae with vanilla soft ice cream. Rode over to the Watkins Glen Pier and watched the sun set โ›ต and then through Clute Park ๐Ÿž back to my truck and back to camp by nine. Dinner was sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ, peppers and peaches ๐Ÿ‘ that I got at the Burdett Exchange ๐Ÿ’ฑ along with a hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš. Night rode over to Foster Pond, sat and looked at the stars โœจ for a while but didn’t see any shooting stars but I didn’t stay that long as it was chilly and I wanted to get back to camp โ›บ as it was after 10:30 PM for a small campfire to warm up ๐Ÿ”ฅ before lights out.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:27 pm with dusk at 7:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 83 and 56 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1931.

Over the Pine Creek

Rainy end to the work week ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

At least it seems like the rain let up for the morning walk though it’s still drizzling out a bit this morning. It should be good for the morning commute but will likely pick up later which is why I decided against biking it in this morning. Next week though as I have the heavy u-lock now installed on my bike.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Rain showers and 71 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. The heaviest rain has pulled to the east. Muggy and damp though. But the bad weather shouldn’t last into the weekend. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

As it was dark and raining ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I put my morning walk off for a while though now I’m off at 6:30 am. It will compact my morning down a bit before work, so I doubt I’ll have time to walk all the way down to the Park and Ride but I can always catch the express bus ๐Ÿš as it heads down Elm Avenue, maybe the Lutheran Church or down by Mike Whyland’s House, whatever that bus stop is called. Going to cook some onions, peppers, mushrooms and a ton of frozen spinach, and scramble some eggs and call that a protein-and-fiber rich breakfast that will get me going, despite not getting to bed until closer to 10 PM then I would like. ๐Ÿ’ค Once again my sleep has been suffering since I got the bicycle, as I’ve been getting home late, like last night after shopping then bicycling home. ๐Ÿ”ฆ Something has to be wrong with that bicycle front light I have — it might be a crappy cheap incandescent bulb but despite the new batteries, it really is terribly dark for riding on those suburban side streets without street lighting after dark.

Today will have a chance of showers before noon, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between noon and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 68 at 1pm. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1930.

Last night I got the last part of my bike build finished, adding the heavy-gauge u-bolt lock to my bicycle. ๐Ÿ”’ It is an Abus Granite 460 u-lock, security Grade 9. I was originally thinking Grade 10 or even higher, but it’s plenty beefy hardened-steel compared to what a lot of people use for locks out in the suburbs. It should be plenty secure if I park the bicycle at the State Capitol, near the security desk, at least during the day time. Ultimately I decided to mount the lock on the back, off the rack, mainly because I couldn’t fit the lock on the frame up front anywhere it wouldn’t be brushing against my legs.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-2.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:47 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 50 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (264ยฐ) at an altitude of 19ยฐ from the horizon, 250,843 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday, I explored another Normans Kill Preserve, ๐Ÿž this time the Mohwak Hudson Land Conservancy’s Normanskill West Preserve, which is across from Delaware Plaza at the end of Normanskill Boulevard. It is a really nice preserve, ๐Ÿธ with much better views and some nice benches along the creek, along with better access for the creek for fishing, and some minor rapids. The preserve is much smaller then the Normanskill Ravines Preserve I visited yesterday, but much nicer. Gets dark early there in the ravine, though it probably is a good place to keep in mind for hot summer days. Then follow it up with ice cream ๐Ÿฆ at Jim’s Tastee Freeze, though I didn’t partake this time as I did that on Saturday.

Then I went grocery shopping with my bicycle at Hannaford. ๐Ÿ›’ I was pleasantly surprised how many groceries I could load into the basket on the back. I was a bit worried about the weight, as the $5 Walmart crate I bought isn’t super heavy, but it worked out fine. I think it will hold up for any load that I am likely to put on my bike. The U-lock comes off and connects my bike securely to the bike rack quickly and easily. It’s an extra-large U-lock and is pretty heavy, but it is secure. Then it slides back onto the mount on the rack. At some point, I’ll post a video showing off all the features of Blackie ๐Ÿšต as I put it together.

Riding home around 9 PM, it became painfully obvious how bad the front light is on my bike. ๐Ÿ”ฆIt’s okay for distance and lighting for traffic, but it doesn’t put out nearly enough light for safe riding and avoiding potholes and obstacles in the road. It won’t be good for night rides in the National Forest and is bad even in town. I was going to wait, but I think I will research and try to get a better light before vacation. Ideally, I’m thinking it would be a straight cob light that is USB-rechargeable ๐Ÿ”‹ that comes with rubber straps to hang on the down tube. This would put a lot of light over and under the front wheel, making for much safer riding, then keep the existing too dim light on the handlebar. I might see if I can clean the contacts or replace the bulb on of the existing fixture. I see they now make LED flashlight bulb replacements, which might allow me to continue to use the existing fixture but with more light output and less battery drain. Maybe that’s a good option, I could swing by the hardware store tomorrow before heading out camping. Also, I think I have dirty contacts or something else wrong with the lamp.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9pm and 11pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 60 degrees at 4am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 20th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

If the weather is decent I may go out to Bender Mellon Farms Preserve ๐Ÿˆ though I think it will likely be thundery. โ›ˆ That said, I should spend some time cleaning and getting gear loaded up in my truck for a quick start tomorrow morning for heading out to Schoharie. ๐Ÿšš My kitchen and bathroom has gotten pretty dirty from all the mud I’ve tracked in and could use a good cleaning. It’s been so humid so I should get out the ammonia and tackle the places where the mold is starting to pop up again.

On this day in 1925, Dayton, Tennessee high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined $100. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿซ Real money back in the day. Now it’s a tank of gas. โ›ฝ Darn criminals ruining, I mean running our country. The judge incorrectly set the fine, rather then letting the jury do it, so his conviction was overturned on appeal. The law would remain on the books until it was repealed 1967. ๐Ÿšจ Also in 1983, the world’s lowest temperature in an inhabited location is recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica at โˆ’89.2 ยฐC (โˆ’128.6 ยฐF). They should build a pipe and send it up north to cool off people efficiently. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 80 degrees at 6pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

The plan for tomorrow is to hit the Catskill Scenic Trail ๐Ÿ„ ๐ŸŒ„ by early to mid-morning, for several hours of riding, ๐Ÿšด before heading to Mine Kill Pool ๐ŸŠ to swim for a few hours before it closes at six o’clock then head back to the state forest to camp. ๐Ÿ• Days are getting a bit shorter now, though even at six o’clock I should be good to get to camp and set up. Maybe this is the day best to do Shauls and hike Vromans Nose, ๐Ÿ‘ƒ though it’s kind of out of my way before the riding the Catskill Scenic Trail and Mine Kill.

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. โ˜€ West wind 3 to 5 mph. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I was thinking of spending the whole day at camp on Sunday, ๐Ÿ• indulging in a lot of reading and exploring the state forest. ๐Ÿ“š However, I also have a desire to visit Shaul’s this weekend. They are open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, but closed on Monday. ๐Ÿ‘ Perhaps I could go on Saturday, taking a northern route, then drive south to Grand George and experience the beautiful Catskill Scenic Trail. Finally, I can head back north to Mine Kill State Park. ๐ŸŠ On the other hand, I don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of maneuvering in that tight campsite, securing everything, and driving on bumpy roads multiple times. It would also result in burning extra fuel. โ›ฝ I’m not entirely sure what I truly want to do. Sometimes, I simply enjoy arriving at camp and being able to relax ๐Ÿฅฑ there for a few days without venturing out daily. I have some tough choices to make! Worse comes to worse, the real vacation starts Friday.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž when the sun will be setting at 7:50 pm with dusk at 8:18 pm. But with all the rain we’ve had lately, I’m sure I’ll want the DEET this weekend. And the bug net for on the hammock.

A very pleasant summer morning ๐ŸŒ…

Cool enough this morning to be reminded of what fall feels like without the humidity and wildfire smoke mugging you the moment you step outside. That said, autumn is just around the corner as is August. It will come quickly come August 8th when I’m back from summer vacation, and I loose all the sunlight in the evening as I’ll be back farther east.

Good morning! Mostly clear ๐ŸŒ… and 61 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees.

Out walking ๐Ÿšถ at 6:15 am which probably isn’t good idea as I didn’t get to bed until much too late after the late return from the hike last night, which I followed by sitting out back for a while and then running inside, taking a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and checking carefully for ticks before bed ๐Ÿ›. A hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš and some grapes ๐Ÿ‡ for protein and sugar before the morning walk. Whole grain oatmeal with fresh blueberries and black berries with more black coffee after the morning walk.๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ“ Plus maybe some carrots ๐Ÿฅ• for a fiber boost.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10am. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 97 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1991.

Finally finished my bike build. ๐Ÿšฒ I’m much happier with Blackie now that I got all the accessories installed except the heavy gauge u-lock holder ๐Ÿ”’ because I’m debating if I should mountain on the frame or on the rack, for better balance center and axle wise versus blocking the location for future additional water storage unit under bike lights for safer nighttime riding for finding potholes and rough terrain on the trail. The waterproof phone holder is great with the Zeopoxa Cycling app which not only tells me my speed but also distanced traveled and provides a map of my route. And every mile it barks out how many miles traveled, average speed and calories burnt. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

That said, I think the feature I like the most about my bicycle is the 13×15 crate I have mounted on my bike rack, now with a MIK adapter for quick release so I can load the box when it’s not on the bicycle or take off for transit on the bus or in my truck. ๐Ÿงบ Or what riding in real rough country or greater efficiency. It’s great, you just throw whatever gear you want in it and go. Hammock, backpack, water, lunch, tools, etc. Also makes a good grocery carrier for heading home from the store. ๐Ÿช Detach the crate, load in the store and I never have to worry buying too much groceries to haul home. Probably use it tonight for that purpose. Toss in the Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š and have tunes ๐ŸŽถ and podcasts to listen to plenty loud over the roar of traffic. Ended up using six plastic cable zip ties to secure the basket to the MIK adapter, it just worked better than bolts and washee with my particular crate. The crate is the weakest link, not the twist ties but I feel confident it could safely carry 20-30 lb of supplies or groceries. ๐Ÿ While the rack is rated for 30 kg or 66 lb, the mount is 20 kg or 44 lb, I think the lightweight crate I installed probably couldn’t handle that much. But I don’t often get juice or milk at the grocery store — milk but usually at Stewarts where I walk, and only a gallon at most of the time. Bicycle water bottle holders are inexpensive, but I’m not sure the advantage over just tossing the water in the back. Maybe for long trips I’d want additional water closer to the front axle.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-2.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:47 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 9:01 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (275ยฐ) at an altitude of 15ยฐ from the horizon, 251,882 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:44 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Well that certainly was an interesting evening hiking in the Norman’s Kill Ravine Preserve. ๐Ÿšถ The loop trail was just longer than I expected and the terrain was more rugged then I would expect for suburban Delmar. Not even all that exciting, just a lot of ridges and swamps along a flatwater, very muddy from the recent rain โ˜”. I think the trails are a bit rougher than I would want to take my new mountain bike on but might walk them again come the autumn when things are colorful and the views are better. ๐Ÿ‚

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 67 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4am. South wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 72 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1974.

I am thinking tonight maybe of checking out another nature preserve along the Normans Kill, the Normans Kill Preserve behind the Justice Center on Normans Kill Boulevard next to Delaware Plaza. ๐Ÿธ๐ŸŒธ This preserve looks much more interesting then Normans Kill Ravines Preserve, and is much smaller / quicker hike, though a slightly longer bus ride. I was thinking I could go there and then go grocery shopping for the weekend thereafter, all using my bicycle. ๐Ÿšด

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11’s crew successfully makes the first landing on the Moon ๐ŸŒ• in the Sea of Tranquility. Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, well at least in England. Us Americans would get to watch it the next day. ๐Ÿ“บ Funny how time zones work. The world conquered the moon, returned a half dozen times or so and got bored and gave up visiting the moon only three years later. ๐ŸŒŽ Worldly problems like Vietnam, pollution and inflation somehow seemed more important than visiting the moon. I guess they were, but to give up so quickly after a goal ๐Ÿฅ… was reached seems like a major societal cop out.

Continues to be a nice weekend on tap. โ˜บ That said, the muggers will return after the rain tonight into tomorrow. Saturday, isolated showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

The plan continues to be to head out of town for the weekend. ๐Ÿ• I am thinking early Saturday morning through mid-day Monday, after the rain stops. I am leaning towards Catskill Scenic Trail on Saturday morning from Grand Gorge to Stamford, then swim in Mine Kill State Park, then Sunday maybe mountain bike around Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest truck trails. ๐Ÿšด I do want to get Shaul’s too, I haven’t decided if that will be Saturday or Sunday. ๐ŸŒถ Probably Sunday as Shaul’s closes at 5 PM. โŒ› Maybe that could be another pool and bicycle day. ๐ŸŠ Biking along NY 30 from the Blenhiem Bridge and maybe doing another afternoon at Mine Kill Pool could be good for Sunday, even though I’d rather hang out at camp for the day and not have to take down camp or at least lock things up, and then have the fun of getting out of that rough site and the bumpy roads. But whatever. Then maybe more of the Catskill Scenic Trail on Monday morning, such as Stamford south to Bloomville. ๐Ÿฎ ๐ŸŠ And another swim before heading out to the folks house. ๐Ÿ– Truth is I don’t want to get home too late on Monday as I need to pack for summer vacation like the next day.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Campfire Day ๐Ÿ”ฅ when the sun will be setting at 8:15 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. On that day in 2022, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 90 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1975.

Across Cedar River Flow

I used to be so burly

And now I’m so tall and lanky compared to that picture on summer vacation three years ago with me wearing that second amendment t-shirt. The thing is the change was worth it, I’ve learned a lot about food and nutrition and I’m so much healthier these days, and my meals are so much filling without the hunger or extreme fullness I used to have.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Clouds, wildfire smoke and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. The air quality index is 131, unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Today is the 200th Day of Year. โณOnly 165 days remain. It will be 2024 before you know it, a fact that a lot of people are already a lot more focused on then I am. Maybe because lately the markets have been on such an upswing. ๐Ÿ“ˆ I’m glad because the end of the year last year was so depressing. While there is storm clouds in the distance sometimes the storm breaks up and doesn’t hit and I’m young and I fundamentally believe that the US economy will continue to grow and if it slows too much the politicians will goose it and at least boost the markets. ๐Ÿฆ†

Another hot and humid summer morning with the wildfire smoke ๐ŸŒซ making everything look quite dull. At least there isn’t that acrid smell from the smoke currently like there was around dusk last night when I was riding back from Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. When you smell wildfire smoke it’s really not pleasant, more like smoldering PVC plastic then wood smoke. ๐Ÿคฎ And it kind of burns your lungs. Fortunately that’s not all the time, usually just around dusk when the air settles down.

Moving a bit slowly this morning ๐Ÿ›Œ though I slept surprisingly soundly. I didn’t get out walking until nearly 6:40 AM as I hit the snooze button a few times โฐ and then by the time I got downstairs, did the bathroom thing ๐Ÿšฝ and had some cold coffee โ˜•,  along with a hard-boiled egg I pulled out of the fridge, and a few carrots. ๐Ÿƒ Did my walk, then came home and had some cream of wheat, fresh blueberries and Greek yogurt for breakfast with a side of some red kidney beans with a bit of sugar-free maple syrup. Black beans, farmer market tomato, mushrooms and another hard-boiled egg for lunch. Not sure yet what is for dinner, maybe brown rice and shrimp, though the shrimp is still frozen. Haven’t had that in a while.

Today will have isolated showers before noon, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between noon and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Widespread haze. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 84 degrees at 2pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 72 at 4pm. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953.

Payday today. ๐Ÿ’ต Money hasn’t hit my checking account quite yet but I’m sure it will shortly. It better hit relatively soon as I will need it to pay the rent because I don’t have a lot of excess funds due to double paying my credit card ๐Ÿ’ณ and the bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ purchase. At least my bicycle license wasn’t expensive, only a single quarter or 25¢. It looks like they haven’t changed that fee since 1958. Next payday is during summer vacation ๐Ÿ– and it’s a three paycheck month. Good I’ll need it, lol. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Today I made sure to bring deodorant into my office for after climbing the stairs. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

Electric bus ๐Ÿš โšก downtown is well air conditioned though the way the driver is heading downtown with hard braking and acceleration it can’t be real fuel efficient. He’s pretty much on time but driving very aggressively this morning. ๐Ÿ”‹

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.4° from the due south horizon (-2.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:49 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 9:02 pm, which is 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (296°) at an altitude of 6° from the horizon, 251,986 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:46 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 69 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then isolated showers between midnight and 1am. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 62 degrees at 6am. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 31st. Maximum dew point of 70 at 7pm. Another muggy evening tonight. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1875.

After riding out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and walking ๐Ÿšถ around the preserve I spent some time reading ๐Ÿ“– then rode home around 8:30. Even with the new batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ I was surprised how dim the lights were on my bike. Maybe I need to think about upgrading them eventually along with adding a better more comfortable seat. But I’m going to wait a while on that I’ve spent enough money and time on the bike for now. If the weather is decent tonight I might pick a different local preserve to visit like Norman’s Kill West or Bender Mellon Preserve. Or maybe I’ll just go for an ordinary walk down to the Elm Ave Park ๐Ÿž.

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drives his car off a bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, dies. ๐Ÿš˜ And in 1984, there were McDonald’s massacre in San Ysidro, California: In a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. ๐Ÿ™ After that, California implemented strict new gun control in that state, and there have been no more mass shootings. ๐Ÿ”ซ Aren’t you glad, the liberal agenda has saved the world.

A picture perfect summer weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. Summer humidity but not oppressively hot and humid, especially out in the mountains. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I am pretty sure I’m going to take off Monday and do a three day weekend to swim ๐ŸŠ‍โ™‚๏ธ at Mine Kill Pool and ride the Catskill Scenic Trail. ๐Ÿšฒ Do some camping ๐Ÿ• and get veggies at Shauls. I don’t really need that much time to pack for summer vacation in the Finger Lakes National Forest the following Friday. It’s my best chance to get away in a long time. Who knows what the rest of summer will look like. โ˜€ That said, I do see the weather pattern improving in the coming weeks. Or so I hope.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until August ๐ŸŒป when the sun will be setting at 8:17 pm with dusk at 8:48 pm. On that day in 2022, we had hot, partly sunny and temperatures between 89 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 101 back in 1933.

Looking East

How many quarters do I need to register my bicycle ? ๐Ÿช™

The town fee schedule doesn’t list it. I checked the town code, and it says one quarter. Twenty five cents! Cheaper then a payphone, if you can find one. I thought it used to be 75¢ the last bicycle I registered but that was 15 years ago and my memory could be bad. I’ll bring a handful otherwise the town clerk’s office is just going to have to make change from a five.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Fog ๐ŸŒซ and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 66 degrees. The AQI is only 25 right now, good, but expected to drop into the unhealthy range of 150-200 by afternoon. Look forward to the air burning your lungs and making it hard to breathe with the Cannunks burning their forests. The muggy weather ends Thursday around 2 am. ๐Ÿ˜“

That said, the first thing in my agenda this morning is to register my bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ๐ŸŽซ with the Town Clerk before heading downtown. I have a $70 hardened steel u-lock ๐Ÿ”’ to secure my bicycle should I decide to park it outside, though my plan is to bring it inside the office ๐Ÿข most days. At lunch time I’ll walk ๐Ÿšถ up to the hospital ๐Ÿฅ to visit a friend recovering there. Hopefully at that hour the air pollution won’t be quite as bad. ๐ŸŒ† Yesterday walked 2.5 miles and rode my bike 28 miles including to the Corning Preserve and Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. ๐Ÿธ

Started out my morning with a hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš, a good source of protein and not so good saturated fats which I will follow up with cream of wheat, fresh blueberries ๐Ÿซwith a dap of plain non fat Greek yogurt. It’s nice knowing now that should I run low on yogurt or other supplies mid week the grocery store is just a quick ride from home – I figured out a back way involving the rail trail and sprawl roads to avoid Delaware Avenue completely when going to Hannaford. โ˜บ Cold black coffee โ˜• with ice to get me moving.

Once the black beans are done this morning๐Ÿง† I should be done cooking for the week as I’ll have plenty of good things to eat all week either fresh, in the freezer or refrigerator. ๐Ÿ” Have five remaining hard boiled eggs in the fridge, cold kidney beans waiting for maple syrup, cooked chicken and shrimp, couscous with edamine and spinach, brown rice with edamine and lentils along with all the usual suspects – red and sweet onions, tomatoes, hot and regular peppers, cherries, grapes, blueberries and a long list of other good eats. Getting fresh sweet corn at the farmers market on Wednesday and will enjoy with MSG. Lots of lemons and stevia for ice coldy lemonade ๐Ÿ‹ in the evening. Good eating this week.

Today will be widespread haze and wildfire smoke after 10am. ๐Ÿšฌ Think it’s going to be a half pack kind of day outside this afternoon. Otherwise, mostly sunny โ˜€, with a high of 87 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7am. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1900.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.6° from the due south horizon (-2.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:49 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:31 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 9:03 pm, which is 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the New ๐ŸŒš Moon in the borthwest (305°) at an altitude of 0° from the horizon, 251,045 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:47 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 33 seconds over yesterday.

This evening ๐ŸŒ† I plan to ride out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and some walking out there and read ๐Ÿ“– until 8:15 pm when I’ll head home. I have both a front and rear light installed for safety. My new goal ๐Ÿฅ… is to walk 7.5 miles or ride 15 miles daily or any combination of the two. I figure based on calories that 1.7 ridden equals 1.0 miles walked. That said, it takes me roughly 16 – 20 minutes to walk that equal calorie burn on the bicycle in 8-12 minutes.

Tonight will have scattered showers, mainly after 5am. Widespread wildfire smoke and poor air quality. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒซ, with a low of 67 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 4am. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1939.

I superglued my boots ๐Ÿ‘ข so I can get a few more weeks out of them, but I do think I’ll need to replace them come vacation. Might want to bring and wear the old ones while camping ๐Ÿ• if the woods is a complete swamp like I fully expect it to be though the Finger Lakes haven’t been quite as wet as locally.

I found I was down to a 36″ waist size for my shorts, ๐Ÿฉณ which I bought another pair on sale this weekend. Amazing thinking I used to get 42″ shorts only a year or two ago, as I liked to have them run big for comfort. They are remarkably comfortable, though very lightweight but that’s good in the heat we’ve had lately.

On this day in 1944, Near the San Francisco Bay, two ships laden with ammunition for the war explode in Port Chicago, California, killing 320. Also on this day, another deadly tragety. ๐Ÿ’ฃ In 1981, A structural failure leads to the collapse of a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri killing 114 people and injuring more than 200.

A picture perfect summer weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 9am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 62 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

This weekend I’m definitely heading out of town โ›บ probably take off Friday or maybe Monday for a schedule similar to what I had planned for last weekend bar obviously the auto show. ๐Ÿš˜ Might be fun to do the Catskill Scenic Trail ๐Ÿšฒ and get a lot of swimming ๐ŸŠ in. I feel like with a little practice and my stronger muscles ๐Ÿ’ช I’ll be a good swimmer and great at the diving board. ๐ŸŒฝ Shaul’s is open for lots of good sweet corn and other veggies. ๐Ÿซ‘

A week from Friday is summer vacation ๐Ÿ– and I’m ready for it. I’m hoping for some nice weather, if anything Western NY has been quite dry compared to any place locally. Hopefully that trend continues into early August. ๐ŸŒป Really too far out to know for sure but that’s the week I have off rain or shine. I’m hoping for nice warm weather though for sure.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž when the sun will be setting at 7:50 pm with dusk at 8:18 pm. On that day in 2022, we had another hot old late summer day – partly sunny and temperatures between 88 and 70 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1916.

 Breeze
