Last Summer Camping During the Heat Wave in August.

Last summer during a heat wave in August, I camped down at the House Pond Campsite on Piseco-Powley Road. I hadn’t camp there in years, but this turned out to be a really nice campsite with a perfect little swimming hole just across the road.

Swimming hole with a good book

Happy Place

I think over the years, the campsite has expanded somewhat, with the fire pit pushed back further, and more room to hang a tarp or pitch a tent. There also is a nice little outhouse up on the hill in back of it.

Camp

Spent lots of time reading a book, laying back in a hammock on the hill above.

I also hiked back to House Pond, which was not all that impressive, but I did find some bear poop up that way.

Fortunately though, I didn’t see any bears, because I spent most of my weekend eating clams and sweet corn and drinking lots of beer.

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡๏ธ

Not a half cold evening for the end of January. 🚶 I went for my evening walk pretty late tonight around 9 pm. Lately been going out much earlier. But I’ll still have enough time for a good night’s sleep. I’m looking forward to the nights being warm enough to sit out back especially before the bugs get bad. I think I will do a lot more reading 📖 out back.

I didn’t spend any time reading 📖 it or working on typing the labels for John Wolcott 🔖 as I promised myself I would. John has a bit of a cold and so do I have some minor symptoms so I don’t want to get him sicker. Once I get the labels typed I’ll ask Lynne Jackson to see if she can print them. That said, she’s very busy with fighting the Crossgates Mall Apartment complex now that the DEIS is posted – I’m doing some of the research but I’m no expert nor do I know how to find appropriate experts. But others know how to do that. I can just raise my voice, kick in a few bucks and help with a little GIS analysis.

I made fish sticks 🐠 and veggies for dinner in the oven. Good enough for a change from pasta. I rode the exercise bike 🚲 for a while, watched a little YouTube video I had downloaded and worked on some code. I keep telling myself that I should get out my soldering iron and build some electronics. 🔬 I like building shit but I’m so bad at soldering. I should learn wire wrapping.

Dentist visit went well today.🦷 No dental health issues, except I should floss more regularly. I need to buy newer floss, the stuff I have is like ten plus years old and comes apart when I use it. I did have a burn on my gums from pasta I made up earlier in the week. 🍝 I credit my teeth health to all the milk I drink and how don’t have candy 🍬 or soda at home and only beer rarely when I camp. 🍻

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 16 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 6th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 1am; South wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to -3 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1948.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 32% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the west-southwest (255ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, some 251,389 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 8th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The moon will set in the west (274ยฐ) at 10:51 pm. The Snow โ„ Moon is on Sunday, February 9.

The darkest hour is at 12:09 am, followed by dawn at 6:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:13 am in the east-southeast (114ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Sunrise is 58 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:55 am with sun in the east-southeast (121ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 23rd. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 14 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1913. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ„

It should be interesting to play โ–ถ with that little six dollar mini camera 🎥 I got on Ali Express. I think it will be very useful if I can use it plugged into the charger and just record video anytime it senses motion. We’ll see how it works, it’s not a big investment. So many little tiny mini and spy cameras on the AliExpress – you really have no idea when somebody might be recording you. And they’re so cheap too – some are even hidden in USB charging hubs, fake dice 🎲 and even pens โœ’ – and they’re only a few bucks. All kinds of audio recorders too.

Thinking 💭 a little about spring time trips โ›บ – I’d like to do Stoney Pond in Morrisville then drive south to Chenango County and maybe Long Pond in April. Things could and probably will change though. I would probably get away mid April maybe before things green up and the bugs are out.

I am still thinking about using the birthday and Christmas money 💵 I got from my parents to get an enclosed picnic tent 🎪 – that would really help to make Memorial Day Weekend with the black flies and any modestly rainy days in the woods much more enjoyable. I got to read up on it – probably too late for the end of season sales now and I doubt things will be on sale again right away so it’s no rush. When camping it would be nice to be able to sit out on a rainy or buggy day and not be trapped in my little camp tent or truck cap.

In four weeks on February 27 the sun will be setting in the west (259ยฐ) at 5:41 pm,🌄 which is 36 minutes and 16 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 15 and 8 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 38 and 20 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1997.

Looking ahead, Save the Pine Bush Turns 42 🦋 is in 1 week, 5:30 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 3 weeks and Flower Moon 🌕 is in 14 weeks.

🇺🇸🦅Only 16 weeks remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🦅🇺🇸

December 27, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Already, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄๏ธ. Cloudy and 41 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 8 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Getting ready for my road trip. โ›บ I have my packing list ready to and tonight I’ll go to the grocery store and get the needed supplies. I want to get another power cord 🔌, I’m hoping they’ll have one on sale. Got to check the oil in the truck, I’ve renewed my library books 📚 but I might want to get a few more. I have mantles ready for the lantern 🏮, I have growing confidence it will work besides deciding against testing it at home. I’ll make sure my Bluetooth speaker 🔊 and charge packs are fully charged. It should be a good trip even if things are bit wet and muddy Sunday into Monday – I’ll bring my muck boots and insulated hunting boots 👢. I am also bringing my muskrat trapping gear and will set up some sets on some of farm ponds at the national forest. 🐀

Today will have scattered showers, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 50 degrees at 2pm. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 11th. I didn’t bring a rain coat โ˜” but I’m not anticipating rain this afternoon and its not raining now. South wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1895. 15 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

The sun will set at 4:28 pm with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 40 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 22 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 8th. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming northwest in the evening. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ˜, with a high of 44 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 26th. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 41. โ˜€ Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. I think it will be a bit wetter and warmer on Sunday in the Finger Lakes but in exchange it will clear out earlier there on Monday. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, โ›บ I’m just glad to be getting away for a few days this weekend into next week. The Adirondacks are nice but ultimately they’re more of a weekend trip than anything else – I go up there a lot and the Finger Lakes are a much larger trip. 🚙 I am almost certain now my route of choice at least on the way there is going to US 20 to Nelson then cut through Erieville and Sheds to NY 13 over to Cortland and down to Ithaca. I haven’t been over that way in years and it would be nice to see the farms, small towns and rural landscape. 🚜

As previously noted, next Friday is Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 43 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Looking Thru Trees Towards East Hill

December 4, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 19 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Starting to melt away a bit but there is still a lot of snow in places on the sidewalks. Roads are fine, taking the express both ways wasn’t bad but walking 🚶 down to the library I noticed the locals are still running behind schedule due to snow banks slowing traffic in the city. Got home close to the regular time.

This evening was the Crossgates Maul Movie 🎦 Theater expansion variance hearing that some of the Save the Pine Bush members went to but I was tired after the long day of work yesterday and that issue is a little bit out of my wheel house 🎡You got to pick your fights and this one isn’t mine. 🌲🌲🌳🐝Shading is bad but it’s not more development of the preserve. And I try to stay as non political as possible these days with my focus primarily on saving money and making a better tomorrow for myself. Not make waves locally just because I don’t view any future 🔮 in New York beyond making money the next few years.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 27 degrees at 1am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 2nd. West wind 3 to 5 mph. Actually a relatively mild night for a change. In 2018, we had mist in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1989.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 with 67% illuminated. The moon will set at 12:14 am. The Cold Moon 🌕 is next Wednesday. The sun will rise at 7:08 am with the first light at 6:37 am, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 47 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 13 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 35 degrees at 11am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 17th. West wind 7 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had mist. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 2001. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1902.โ„

It looks an another cool down with a few inches of snow come Friday and fairly cold for the weekend. โ›„ That said, Monday and Tuesday will be mild and rainy, really eating away at the snow. Then a cold pattern will return and it might be quite cold and snowy the weekend before Christmas. This year seems on track for a White Christmas 🎄 which is actually quite uncommon around these parts but things could still change.

In four weeks on January 1 the sun will be setting at 4:32 pm,🌄 which is 9 minutes and 51 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had cold but sunny weather and temperatures between 11 and -10 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 16 degrees. The record high of 57 degrees was set back in 1966.

I’ve been working on updating the expired weather records for the blog. 📝 It took me a while to find the necessary reports on the weather service website and I had to update the code for reading the files due to changes in their field names. But hopefully I’ll have that up tomorrow.

One of my colleagues who is very conservative posted another one of those Russian pro government, cop 👮 worshipping articles and I so wanted to respond back on how I don’t worship government employees but I bit my tongue and remained quiet. I really just hate social media these days – not just because of the stupid things I say but how so often it makes me angry ๐Ÿ‘ฟ and frustrated 😤. I like my little corner of the internet much better where I’m free of nasty comments.

Looking ahead, Christmas 🎅 is in 3 weeks, New Years Day 2019 🎉 is in 4 weeks, National Bird Day 🐦 is in 6 weeks, 37th Birthday 🎉 is in 8 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 👴🏻 is in 59 weeks.

Snowy Mountain from Watch Hill

November 4, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Yes it has but I have tomorrow off as it’s Election Day. Doesn’t feel like Election Day though a I early voted last Monday. Next Monday is Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. Mostly sunny and around the freezing point at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

A beautiful morning. But it’s not expected to last. As the day progresses we will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 50 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 10th. South wind 6 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 76 was set in 1994. There was a dusting of snow in 2006.โ„

Definitely nice having that extra hour โณ in the morning to get going but the commute home will be dark on the express bus ๐Ÿš. But daylight is so limited this time of year so it’s best to take advantage of it fully.

The sun will set at 4:45 pm with dusk around 5:14 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday.

I remembered to turn on my porch light before leaving. ๐Ÿ’ก It’s on a daylight switch to save energy, so it won’t light until dusk as it seems wasteful to leave it on all day. I should see how much power the daylight switch uses itself but it may be a few milliamps or less as it’s probably a small photo cell that turns off a transistor.

Tonight will be cloudy โ˜, with a low of 42 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 9th. South wind 10 to 13 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 17 occurred back in 1951.

I had a nice dinner ๐Ÿฒ of stuffed peppers at my parents house but I left my laptop charger there. They plan to drop it off at my house after their doctor appointment.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 13 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.

Assuming that it doesn’t snow I’m thinking about Madison County and probably Stoney Pond. โ›บ I thought about leaving work early on Friday but I don’t want to get caught in a snow squall on Friday so I’ll leave early Saturday and come back Monday. My propane tank ๐Ÿฎ is full and my truck almost full of gas โ›ฝ so all I’ll need is any extra food I may need for the trip. If I go Saturday I should have time to find firewood to burn although Stoney Pond is often well picked over for wood.๐ŸŒฒGoing to be a crisp weekend but if the wind ๐Ÿƒ isn’t too bad and there is lots of sun it should be nice.

As previously noted, next Monday is Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:37 pm with dusk at 5:07 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2002.

Frost on the Leaves

October 30, 2019 8 AM Update

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Next Wednesday is Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€. Overcast and generally cloudy and 58 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ Calm wind. The dew point is 52 degrees. Mild day, I left my windows open a bit before leaving for work. Nice walk ๐Ÿšถ down to the Park and Ride.

I was in bed by 8:30 last night ๐Ÿ˜ด, listeningย  to a podcast for a while. ๐Ÿ‘‚ Woke up fairly early but it was dark with the late sunrise ๐ŸŒ… and the cloudy skies. โ˜ Kind of a depressing day but once I’m in my windowless office at work I’ll never know. And I have thermostat right above my desk, so I can make things as comfortable as possible.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 4th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 1pm. Light southeast wind. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1946. 0.1 inches of snow fell back in 1925.โ„

Tonight I’m heading over to John Wolcott house ๐Ÿ“‚ for a while. Later in the week – maybe tomorrow I need to return my library books I got out for vacation ๐Ÿ“š. Technically they are due on Friday so I could drop them off then after work.

The sun will set at 5:51 pm with dusk around 6:20 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 63 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 10 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 35 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be scattered showers, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 57 degrees at 10pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 4am. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1988.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 51. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 53 degrees. Cool but that’s what is expected for the first weekend of November.

I am leaning towards heading up to the White Rocks area of the Green Mountains ๐Ÿ—ป this weekend and if it’s decent next week, head out to Stoney Pond in Nelson Madison County. This weekend would just be hiking and camping. Next weekend I might do some hunting ๐Ÿ”ซ and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ. Lots of that in Madison County. But this weekend i also want to go back to White Rocks and do that hike again and camp up there. Beautiful country, but it’s a bit of a drive north.

I have to figure out how I’m going to invest the remaining money after my 401(k) now that I’m not able to do deferred comp with my new job. ๐Ÿ’ฐ I think I’ll stay away from getting too much into index funds, preferring FDIC-insured CDs for now. At some points the good times in the market will have to run out. Not sure when that’s going to be, but I’d rather wait and somewhat time the market, even though i know timing the market is a terrible strategy, but it’s hard to see things going up all that much now for a while. Planned now, a buck now can be a few bucks later to buy land, a tractor, livestock or more guns.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ when the sun will be setting at 4:42 pm with dusk at 5:12 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2018, we had drizzle showers, cloudy and temperatures between 54 and 44 degrees. I remember that day well driving back on the Thruway with a co worker ๐Ÿš˜. Another cycle done. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 73 back in 2015.

Fog on the Road

October 25, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is November ๐Ÿฅง. Mostly cloudy and 43 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ Calm wind. The skies will clear tomorrow around 2 am.

Kind of a typical late October day with the colors fading ๐Ÿ‚ and the air smelling like wood smoke ๐Ÿ’จ and cow manure. ๐Ÿฎ Seasons always change so quickly. Kind of a rough ride in, the driver has slammed on the brakes of the hybrid a few times. Seems to stop well though. It’s one of the older hybrids without windows that open and it smells like cleaner. Maybe I’m just a bit over sensitive as I’m not feeling all that great.๐Ÿ‘ƒ

I still feel like shit ๐Ÿ˜ซthis morning but it’s off to work. This morning I think I have fever, as I was sweating a lot when I woke up. Still have a headache too and achy but there is too much to do to call in sick. I did get to bed by 7 pm so I got twelve hours of sleep and will rest up over the weekend. I want to knock on some doors for David Bissember tomorrow but only if I’m not too sick. โœŠ

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 58 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 21st. Maximum dew point of 47 at 4pm. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.โ„

The sun will set at 5:58 pm with dusk around 6:27 pm, which is one minute and 27 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for possible rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 10 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 12th. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1952.

In 1962, in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Adlai Stevenson shows photos at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council proving that Soviet missiles are installed in Cuba.๐Ÿš€ย Fortunately, the Russians decided to back down and take their missiles back home.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 56 degrees at 2pm. Typical for tomorrow. Should be a great autumn day. North wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 1997.โ„

I am hoping that I feel good enough to be out and about tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™‹ I would like to do some door knocking in Troy then go hiking maybe at Peebles Island or possible somewhere more outlaying in Rensselear County like Burden Pond or Grafton Lakes. ๐Ÿธ If the rain wasn’t expected to start so early on Sunday morning, I’d say I’d hike somewhere in Western Rensselear County and camp overnight in the Green Mountain National Forest.๐Ÿšถ

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain. ๐ŸŒง Pretty much all day, might be pretty cold and damp one.ย High near 55. Southeast wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees.

As previously noted, next Friday is November ๐Ÿฅง when the sun will be setting at 5:48 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 59 and 48 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

Heading down to Towanda
