August 12, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Sunny and 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees.

This morning was a bit more breezy than expected but that’s kind of the norm on the Hector Backbone. ๐Ÿƒ Kind of a quiet and lazy morning today, I’m in no rush to get going. ๐Ÿ’ค I kind of wanted to catch up on sleep and avoid a crazy morning rushing to get to the park before the parking lot fills and closes. That said, it seems like my fears ๐Ÿ˜ฑ are rather misplaced – there has been no evidence of that happening this week. Much less hot and humid.

Enjoyed a nice quiet morning in the hammock ๐Ÿ˜ƒ looking at the trees swaying above and just relaxing. Monday and Tuesday were too much of a rush. Vacation should be about relaxing. ๐Ÿ’ค I really am enjoying camping ๐Ÿ• where I have no cellphone reception ๐Ÿ”• as it keeps me from constantly checking social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Facebook is nice but it sure is addictive.

I am thinking today of exploring the Caywood Point historic site ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and if there is a place to fish down there ๐ŸŽฃ tossing in a line. I wanted to get night crawlers ๐Ÿ› but I can get them today when I shop ๐Ÿช. I am going to leave the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ on the truck and I might put in at the Hector Town Park where there is supposedly a boat launch and paddle around mid lake. ๐Ÿ›ฅ In the evening I’ll probably go down to Watkins Glen for ice and groceries and maybe a brief swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ to close out the day.

This afternoon will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. North wind around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1944.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:13 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:43 pm, which is one minute and 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and one minute of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday.

It looks like the party ๐ŸŽ‰ broke up this morning based on the number of cars going by so tonight I might hike down to Foster Pond and see if I can see more of the percid metroid showers ๐ŸŒ . I am thinking it might be a nice clear night for that with less humidity for better visibility. Sitting along the pond provides a good view of the stars โœจ. Hopefully the kids ๐Ÿง’ ๐Ÿง‘didn’t trash the area too much.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. Calm wind. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1957.

Shopping ๐Ÿ›’ at Wally World the other day I couldn’t get any more paper bowls ๐Ÿฅฃ so I ended up getting Styrofoam. I always used to use Styrofoam while camping as I figured it burned better, was cheaper and didn’t involve cutting down trees ๐Ÿ”ฅ but lately I’ve been using paper products when camping because I was reading how noxious the blowing agents are for expanded polystyrene and it stinks and burns burn if you don’t have a hot fire. Paper ain’t great either – it’s plastic coated – but in some ways it’s a better. I don’t know, I use regular reusable stuff at home ๐Ÿก but camping it’s just easier and cleaner to let the fire do the dishes. Often my water supply of potable ๐Ÿšฐ water is limited. When I have my off-grid homestead with the burn barrels for unlimited trash disposal ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ I’ll have to decide what is the right option for me – water might be precious ๐Ÿ’ฆ .

I’ve continued reading Gebe Brown’s book ๐Ÿ“™ on Regenerative Agriculture. It one part ideological but also kind of a rethinking about orthodoxy when it comes to agriculture. ๐Ÿšœ When he gets off his high horse ๐Ÿด he actually has some interesting ideas. It really makes me think when I own my off-grid property I’ll put a premium on diversity of plants ๐ŸŒฟ and wildlife and work hard to remove and burn up invasive species on my land. I have no moral quams about using glyphosate or other pesticides responsibility to manage land and I do see a lot of benefits to planting milkweed ๐Ÿฆ‹ and other native species ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ to bring in wildlife for hunting ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ‡ and observation ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ”Ž. It’s really beautiful what things were like at that farm I visited the other week for the party ๐ŸŽ‰ where they had irradicated nearly all invasives in favor of natives.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 64 at 9am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Honestly, if the weather is going to be bad ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I’d rather it happen on the day vacation ends. It seems like a busy week at work and I’m sure things will be crazy next week once I clock in. ๐Ÿ•’ But so it goes, I have to make money ๐Ÿ’ต to have money to spend on vacation.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:20 pm. On that day in 2019, we had sunny and temperatures between 78 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1948.

Dusk on East Canada Creek

August 11, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Partly clear and 74 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 65 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 10 am. ๐Ÿ˜“

To end the first half of summer vacation ๐Ÿ– I thought things went remarkably well. I spent about six hours at the pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and two paddling the Montour Falls canal. ๐Ÿ›ถ While it was a bit choppy at the end of the day on Seneca Lake for the most part it wasn’t bad. ๐ŸŒŠ A 38 mile lake, even if across its relatively narrow and sat below tall hills is always going to be somewhat rough. Might be even less windy tomorrow – I left the kayak ๐Ÿ›ฅ on the truck and come morning I might decide to do more paddling tomorrow.

That caramel sundae ๐ŸงI got from the Glen Dairy Bar was pretty good today. I will have to get there a few more times before I leave the Finger Lakes for a few more options. It’s fun having good ice cream when you camp. Had more of those sausage paddies with cheese and ketchup on a hard role for dinner. ๐Ÿ” They’re a nice easy treat. I have two more to finish off tomorrow maybe for lunch and then I’ll figure out what is next for camp meals ๐Ÿด.

Tonight will be partly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 65 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 8pm. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 46% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:41 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:12 am in the east-northeast (69ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:51 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 58 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over last night.

I hiked back to Foster Pond this evening to watch the percid metriod showers ๐ŸŒ but stayed only for about fifteen minutes when there was what appeared to be a very wild party ๐ŸŽ‰ on the one end of the lake disturbing the solitude. Based on the noise and the late arrivers it seemed like an under age drinking ๐Ÿป party. I wasn’t going to get mixed up with that and honestly myself I wasn’t that sober after having a few drinks with dinner to toast off the day and wash down those sausage paddies. That said, in the brief time I was there I saw two shooting stars and by the time I was heading back it had clouded up.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6am. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1944.

It should be another nice day tomorrow. โ˜€ I am not going to rush to get going tomorrow though as I need to try to get some more sleep tonight. ๐Ÿ’ค I am thinking about more kayaking tomorrow ๐Ÿ›ถ, maybe off of Hector Park boat launch or maybe the Watkins Glen boat launch and paddling up along the shoreline of Seneca Lake to Hector Point. I don’t think I’ll do more of the Montour Canal – I found it kind of boring and it stunk of raw or partially treated sewage and was kind of green from pollution. I was hoping I could get off the canal to explore Bad Indian Marsh but there wasn’t a lot of navigable streams – I saw only one and it didn’t look very promising. ๐Ÿ›‘

In four weeks on September 8 the sun will be setting in the west (278ยฐ) at 7:29 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 56 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 73 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 55 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 2015.

Looking ahead, September ๐ŸŽ is in 3 weeks, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡ธ is a month away, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 6 weeks, Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 12 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 13 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 3 months, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 14 weeks, December ๐ŸŽ„ is in 16 weeks, Bill of Rights Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 18 weeks, Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ is in 19 weeks, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 20 weeks, National Bird Day ๐Ÿง is in 21 weeks, 5:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 24 weeks, Ground Hog Day ๐Ÿป is in 25 weeks and Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 6 months.

 Mohawk River

August 10, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Partly cloudy โ˜๏ธand 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

I don’t think I would describe today as bad day, ๐Ÿ˜’but things didn’t quite go exactly to plan. While I did get a shower ๐Ÿšฟ in and about five minutes of swimming โšก it wasn’t the full day of swimming ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I had planned. I was prepared for thunderstorms โ›ˆ in the evening but not the countless rumbles of thunder after 2 pm. I guess I can’t complain about the rain much – I didn’t get wet until very briefly at Clute Park ๐Ÿ’ง and I was dry by the time I got back to camp.

I like the Watkins Glen State Park pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ a lot but this year is like no other. During the pandemic we are all living through I was really freaked out by the crowds at the entrance and the pool. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง While I’ve never been a real people person, crowds are scary during a pandemic. ๐Ÿ‘พEven parts of the trail – until I got west of the trail were kind of scary with the crowds. I tried to maintain my social distance and flip the mask over my face ๐Ÿ˜ท but sometimes it’s just scary. I want to enjoy my vacation in these most scary times, but I also don’t want to end up on a ventilator choking for life, all alone in a hospital ๐Ÿฅ.

I couldn’t get goggles anywhere in Watkins Glen ๐Ÿ‘€ so I guess I will have to do without. Hopefully my eyes won’t get too irritated from the pool chlorine. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ That said after today’s experience I don’t expect to be spend a lot more time in the parks although I do like a good shower ๐Ÿšฟ or swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ while camping. I thought a Monday at the parks in August would be a heck of a lot quieter. It seems like everybody is craving outdoor recreation during the pandemic. ๐Ÿž Or maybe it’s just I notice people and crowds a lot more during the pandemic. ๐Ÿ˜ท I can wear a mask and wash my hands ๐Ÿ‘ good bit there is only so much I can do.

Glen Dairy Bar was good ๐Ÿฅค, ultimately I decided on a strawberry ๐Ÿ“ slushy over ice cream. No complaints there, I could taste the pieces of strawberry in it. I am sure I’ll be back for more tomorrow. Thinking ice cream tomorrow. That banana ๐ŸŒ sundae I saw somebody have looked amazing. Of course with social distancing these days the lines look much larger but they were busy too with the hot weather. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ

Sat down by Seneca Lake for a while ๐Ÿผ/strong>๒Žฑกnd it was quite pleasant but a fair number of people around. Started to walk along the shoreline and the sky just opened up and started to pour. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Ran back to my truck and by the time I got to Bennettsville the sky was clear. โ˜€ Go figure. It looks like they got pounded with rain just north of Elmira today. I wonder if there was flooding or storm damage down that way ?

Made up hot sausage paddy burgers ๐Ÿ” with American cheese which when the bun is well toasted and with some ketchup is quite the treat. I often also put red sauce on the patties but not this time as I decided to bring only one cooler so I have limited space for cold stuff. I actually like them better than beef burgers ๐Ÿฅฉ but don’t tell a cow that. I also had a couple of beers ๐Ÿปto wash the day away.

I normally bring too coolers but last minute on Saturday I decided to leave one home to save space. ๐Ÿ—ƒ I am already regretting that decision as it limits meal choices. ๐Ÿด In the early spring or late fall one cooler is fine but this time of year I like to have two so I can store both cold and cool foods. But I get tired of always buying so much ice and having to move and clean with two coolers all the time. โ„ Ice takes up a lot of space but true automotive refrigerators use a lot of electricity expensive and aren’t real energy efficient. โšก

Tonight will become mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at pm. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 56% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:50 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 24. The darkest hour is at 1:14 am, followed by dawn at 5:40 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:11 am in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:50 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Sunny and hot ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 93 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

Tomorrow planning on another early start, ๐ŸŒ… I think first heading for a good swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ at the Watkins Glen State Park Pool then paddling from the new boat ๐Ÿ›ฅ launch just east of Clute Park. Lake was very placid today and I expect the same tomorrow but I’m more concerned about thunderstorms tomorrow. โ›ˆ I got some nice muffins to have with my coffee โ˜• tomorrow morning.

Heading to bed ๐Ÿ› early so I can get up early. Between the clouds ๐ŸŒฅ and the fact I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด decided against a hike to Foster Pond tonight. Still a ton of people camping up there tonight. I came out here a large part for that great pool I’ll be disappointed if I can’t have some good fun in the sun tomorrow.

In four weeks on September 7 the sun will be setting in the west (278ยฐ) at 7:30 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 73 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1945. Just another reminder that autumn is coming.

Looking ahead, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 2 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 4 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is a month away, Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 months, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 16 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 4 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 19 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 20 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 23 weeks, Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 23 weeks, 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 24 weeks, February ๐ŸŒง is in 25 weeks and Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is in 6 months. So you have a lot of time for garbage to accumulate on your computers before it’s time for a big bonfire. ๐Ÿ’พ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Hot but nice morning

August 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Hardly a bummer during summer vacation. I’m hiking the Finger Lakes Trail this morning ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ, getting nice and hot and sweaty before going to the swimming pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ later. Two weeks to until the Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ. But you won’t think that today. Partly sunny and 87 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 69 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

Yeah, it doesn’t get much hotter in the Finger Lakes. ๐Ÿ’ฅ It’s a hot one for sure. But I’m enjoying my hike up past the Upper Reservoirs and Group Camp on Glen Falls and I might even hike as far west as Sugar Hill State Forest. One consideration with the heat though is I better not get to th pool too late lest thunderstorms โ›ˆ come rolling through and they close.

Absolutely stunningly beautiful day โ˜€ but it’s already hot.๐ŸŒก๏ธAlready quite hazy and the air conditioning in Big Red is pissing moisture like a cow pisses. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ’ฆBut it’s cool up here at the park ๐Ÿž and camping up on backbone. ๐Ÿ—ป Fixed my dash cam so hopefully I won’t be getting a ton of pictures of the sky today. ๐ŸŒž

Well I got a bit of a late start due to sleeping ๐Ÿ˜ด in as I as I ended up staying up late last night, laying back in the hammock after my walk to Foster Pond๐ŸŒŒ. Still can’t believe how many people were camping ๐Ÿ• up that way. Honestly, I don’t mind not having cell service at camp ๐Ÿ“ถ and having

Regardless, I made it to Watkins Glen by a little after 10am and was able to get parking by the pool ๐Ÿ…ฟ even during the pandemic.๐Ÿ‘พ I was worried they’d be limiting parking and it would be closed if I got there after 10. Pools open at eleven in the Finger Lakes. I have my bandana on and are flipping it up as necessary as a mask. ๐Ÿ˜ท I’m staying out of the gorge as I think that would more difficult to maintain social distancing there. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธBought some crackers and cheese ๐Ÿง€ to snack on for lunch.

I really wanted to get goggles as my old ones broke and needed to be replaced so my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ don’t get irritated by the chlorine.๐Ÿ‘๏ธโ€๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ But after trying two stores they’re gone for the year. It might be 90 degrees out but all they’re selling is Halloween Candy ๐Ÿฌ and Thanksgiving Turkey. ๐Ÿฆƒ

Today will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 10am. That’s a cooker for the Finger Lakes. ๐ŸŒก๏ธPeople must be roasting back in Albany. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

This afternoon I plan to spend most of my time at the pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then get ice cream ๐Ÿฆat Glen Dairy Bar and groceries at Tops. Then I’ll sit at Clute Park and fish ๐Ÿ  and watch as the sun starts to drop. ๐ŸŒ‡

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 63ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:25 pm. Not sure if I’ll hike back to Foster Pond this evening ๐ŸŒƒ but I will probably spend some time at Clute Park fishing ๐ŸŽฃ before heading back to camp. At sunset, look for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Saturday may not be the greatest day ever. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 75 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

August 9, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 72 degrees at Foster Pond. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees. Nice starry night ๐ŸŒƒ at least at times. Crickets are cricketing, cows are mooing with occasional hoots of an owl and the blood curling sound of a coyote. ๐Ÿฆ‰

Didn’t get kayaking ๐Ÿ›ถ today but that’s fine, I ended up doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– and hiking, taking in the vast landscapes of the grass lands known as the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐Ÿ–ผ Sometimes I like days when I don’t have to drive or take things down or secured for heading out of camp. Read a bunch of Gebe Brown’s book ๐Ÿ“™ on Regentative Agriculture. While he is a shameless promoter of doing things his “new way” on his farm, he does have some interesting insights into the land much like Joel Saltin. Do I agree hundred ๐Ÿ’ฏ percent with both of them? No but it’s interesting to hear their voice – same reason for trying to listen and be an informed person.

Hiking a bunch of Interloken Trail today was nice ๐Ÿšถ and it’s been dry enough lately that the trail wasn’t too mucky. Often the shallow soils of the Hector Backbone mean lots of mud. ๐Ÿ‘ข Saw and heard lots of cows ๐Ÿฎ and the ponds are small but nice. One of these days I’m going to have to do some fishing in some of them. ๐ŸŽฃ

I have a bunch more pictures to upload to the blog โคด๏ธ but they’ll have to wait until tomorrow ๐Ÿ“ธ when I have a more reliable internet connection down in the village. My uploader works poorly on a bad connection. It’s quite pretty in the Finger Lakes and I’m really digging my new camera phone and being able to post more things close to live. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

This evening I hiked down to Foster Pond which is about a mile from camp ๐Ÿšถ but I was a nice walk. Really didn’t need my flashlight much ๐Ÿ”ฆ, I know the area pretty well and I always enjoy a good night hike. I did carry a flashlight mostly for safety on the road so any approaching cars could spot me early on. I am surprised how many people are camping ๐Ÿ• up by Foster Pond, usually it’s quiet on weeknights. I wonder if the folks frogging ๐Ÿธ got some to eat this evening. Certainly a lot of frogs on the lake but none real big. I’m actually glad I’m a bit farther away from Foster Pond than usual with it being so busy this week.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10pm. West wind around 7 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1955.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 64% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:25 pm. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:38 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:09 am in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 7 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:48 am with sun in the east-northeast (74ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

The plan for tomorrow is get a relatively early start โ˜• and do some hiking in the Upper Gorge Trail above the main park and then swim ๐ŸŠ at the Watkins Glen Park Pool. Also need to buy some food and ice – I’m very low, and then maybe fish ๐ŸŽฃ and take in the sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ or at least the evening at Clute Park.

In four weeks on September 6 the sun will be setting in the west (279ยฐ) at 7:32 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 21 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 72 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 91 degrees was set back in 2018.

Exploring Mine Kill

August 9, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Six weeks to Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ . Sunny and 71 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. Tree๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees.

Went for a walk ๐Ÿšถ again this morning on the Interlaken Trail and to Foster Pond. Definitely a nice morning, ๐ŸŒž lots of sun and wildflowers. ๐ŸŒปHad a nice pan of corned beef hash and cheese for breakfast. ๐Ÿณ Some eggs ๐Ÿฅš would be nice but I’ll have to get them today.

Wildflowers are definitely better this time of year ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ compared to earlier in the summer when I often take my vacation. It just makes my vacation a little more enjoyable seeing the road sides in bloom, the butterflies and bees. And yes, all that field corn ๐ŸŒฝ is getting tall.

Been quite busy up here ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ง, with so many things closed during the pandemic based on the number of cars ๐Ÿš˜ I’ve seen on the road. Fortunately, my campsite is quite remote and quiet ๐Ÿคซ so nobody is bothering me. Seen more equestrians ๐Ÿด than normal – in part because the Upper Assembly Area is closed at Sugar Hill. ๐Ÿ”

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 4pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2001.

Kind of breezy up here on the backbone ๐Ÿ—ป but I’m hoping the breeze will die down later and I can get out on Seneca Lake and the Montour Canal later. ๐Ÿ›ถ I’m excited about all the wildlife I might see there. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿข๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸŸ I just don’t want to go on Seneca Lake if it’s at all breezy ๐Ÿšฃ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ because it’s a big lake and can be very choppy. ๐ŸŒŠ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:13 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:46 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:26 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 68 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1955.

Been reading ๐Ÿ“– more of the Real Goods Solar Living Handbook. Half marketing catalog, half pseudo green living for rich folk, it sure seems like it’s gotten real dated fast. ๐ŸŒŽ Still an interesting read even if it’s more ideological and about marketing over-priced organic crap and green products for the landfill ๐Ÿ—‘ then practical realities of providing for one’s self and obeying the laws of nature.

I was noticing how much of the forest along Potomac Road was ash trees. ๐ŸŒณIt’s only a matter of time before much of the forest is going to be dying than gone. I see they have an Emerald Ash Boerer trap on the road to detect the invaders but I doubt they’ll treat all of the trees. Already as little as 50 miles south of here in Wellsboro you can see the devestation of the forests from EAB. ๐Ÿ› Forests are always in a state of decline – thats entropy – but they’re always changing with the land and introduced species.

One week from now I’ll be taking down camp and heading back to Albany. ๐Ÿก Or at least heading closer to that direction. But there is a lot more reading ๐Ÿ“–, hiking ๐Ÿšถ and paddling to do before then. Vacation really is just beginning – today is my first full day in the Finger Lakes.

I am still thinking I want to go the way I came ๐Ÿค” although I would want to avoid that rough seasonal use only road. If it’s really nice a week from Sunday I might overnight at Cherry Ridge ๐Ÿ’ and then head back home through Madison County. I like seeing the rough dairy country. ๐Ÿฎ The hills, the cows, the rundown shacks and hollows. ๐Ÿ—ป

I really like the wild country ๐Ÿ and wish I could live out here full time. Somehow I like it even better than the Adirondacks. Redneck country life is fun, even if at times it’s dirty and smelly. ๐Ÿ’ฉ But alas I’m making good money at my job ๐Ÿ’ต and are able to save a lot of it for a better tomorrow. It’s nice having some professional success in life and knowing it will lead to a better tomorrow, especially as I try to live frugally as possible. Some days I’ll live in a small town, have land and be able to listen ๐Ÿ‘‚ to the moos of cattle full time. ๐Ÿ„

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ when the sun will be setting at 7:06 pm with dusk at 7:34 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 79 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 71 degrees. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1946.

August 3, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Partly sunny and 72 degrees at the Swift Wetland Preserve. There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 65 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

It certainly is a real muggy day. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ Last night was much worse, especially before dinner time. I ended up going to Tractor Supply and getting my propane tank filled, along with washing Big Red and getting groceries and two flash drives ๐Ÿ’พ to replace the one that I lost that had all my music ๐ŸŽถ on for listening in the truck and was using to move files ๐Ÿ“‚ between my personal and work laptop.

I thought yesterday was going to be a lot cooler and rainy โ˜” then it turned out to be. After packing up hammock camp on Irish Hill I fished at White Birch Pond. ๐ŸŽฃ It was cloudy to start out the morning but it cleared and got hot and sunny. Caught two rock bass, one was big enough it would have filled a large frying ๐Ÿณ pan but I tossed it back in because they’re all bones. I saw a red tailed hawk overhead a couple of times then I looked up and noticed one of the hawks had a white head and some white tail feathers and realized it was a Bald Eagle. Neat!

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 8am. West wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-6.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:34 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (288ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (295ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 11 seconds with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon in the east-southeast (117ยฐ) at an altitude of 0ยฐ from the horizon, 243,864 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:25 pm. At sunset, watch out thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. Another super muggy evening There will be a west-southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 15 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 69 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 4am. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1966.

I got my new cellphone in the mail โœ‰ yesterday. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I was surprised it came on a Saturday. I have yet to activate it but my old phone is barely holding a charge and once I get the case today I’ll switch over to it. ๐Ÿ”‹ The new phone is charging now and once I get the case today I’ll move the SIM card ๐Ÿ’ณ and SD card over to the new phone and download apps that I normally use at the library ๐Ÿ“š this afternoon.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 63 at 9am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 87. Maximum dew point of 65 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

I am going to request next week off for vacation. โ›บ Not totally sure if I will get it but maybe I can work remotely part of the week if necessary. I think I’m going to my old standby of the Finger Lakes National Forest. Not going to spend a lot of time at the state parks but maybe a day or two I’ll go to the pool and swim but I’m sure parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ will be severely limited so I’ll have to get up early to swim ๐ŸŠ. My oil change is tomorrow and after that I should be good to go.

There are 3 months until Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time).
