Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. Cool and clear for a change.

It was a decent day but cloudier and grayer then I would have hoped for part of the day. โ˜ Did get a nice hike along the Burnt Hill, Gorge and Interlaken Trails although parts were muddy. Swimming wasn’t that great with the cloudy skies but so be it. ๐ŸŠ I spent about two hours at the Watkins Glen library working on the blog and Save the Pine Bush stuff.

I’m thinking about tomorrow staying on more night in the Finger Lakes but not at this campsite as you can see from the pictures, the driveway is a muddy mess. ๐ŸฝI figure I should let the land recover and if I do stay in the Finger Lakes another night, it will be at a different site. I’m not worried about getting my big jacked up truck stuck but I don’t want to tear it up anymore.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 56 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Yeap, Labor Day Weekend will come and go before you know it. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Light northwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was sticky. It got down to 75 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter Moon with 49% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:03 am. ๐ŸŒ—The moon will set at 12:57 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tonight with mostly clear skies. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:51 am with the first light at 5:18 am, which is 57 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 11am. Light northwest wind becoming north 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1941.

I’m really not sure about tomorrow. If it’s beautiful I’m all about staying another day in the Finger Lakes.๐Ÿ’ญ But if I wake up tomorrow and it doesn’t look good for swimming then I’ll head west. 72 degrees is pretty cold in my book for swimming especially if it’s cloudy and stormy like today. Often it seems like the wonderful forecasts are over predictions. ๐Ÿ˜Although I wouldn’t mind seeing a good sunset tomorrow in the Finger Lakes like I could see if I camped on Matthew’s Hill. Beautiful sunsets up there, especially in the pasture to say nothing of the views of the stars โœจ and the wineries amd farms across Seneca Lake. That campsite didn’t look to muddy when I was up there yesterday, it’s not flooded like two years ago. Otherwise I could go out to one of the state forests in Allegany County tomorrow like I had planned and then Thursday drive up to Letchworth State Park and then maybe camp Thursday night at McCarthy Hill / Rock City in Salamanca and do the Allegany State Park Friday and Pine Creek Gorge on Saturday. On my way out, I’ll probably also hit up the Sugar Hill Firetower not because the views are that great but it’s pretty much on the way out to Hammondsport and all points west. ๐Ÿ‘“

In four weeks on August 20 the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1937.

I lost my deodorant that I just replaced on Saturday so I bought more at Walmart today when I returned cans and bought groceries. I felt so stinky hiking without deodorant. I also bought milk ๐Ÿฎ and ice and a summer sausage that appealed to me. No ice cream today as I was thinking I could get ice cream tomorrow ๐Ÿฆif I stayed anl extra day in the Finger Lakes.

Looking ahead, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 4 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 8 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 10 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 67 weeks.

I’m feeling remarkably tired so I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay up.

Evening Shadows

May 27, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees in Dormansville, NY. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. Sleeping in the truck once again tonight at my parents house. ๐Ÿ˜ด Enjoy this beautiful evening while it lasts, we might be in for a period of unstable weather once again for the week.โ˜ Clouds and rain tomorrow, once again.

It was a pretty decent weekend up in the Green Mountains, bar my hammock ripping into two, the black flies, and forgetting to pack extra socks.ย ๐Ÿงฆ I was sure I had the socks with me, and I started to paw through my pack on Thursday night, and I just assumed they were burred in my pack. Frustrating through. I’ve started to use a packing list before camping, but i didn’t have a printed copy of the list to check off when I started packing on Wednesday night, as Thursday was busy with the Pine Bush event.โœ So be it. The black flies weren’t truly bad until it got really sunny and nice this morning, but I had a nice drive down Forest Road 71 on this sunny morning, and I got home relatively early to unpack.๐Ÿ’ผ

Hiking the Stratton Mountain, Stratton Pond loop sure was exhausting but well worth it in my opinion.๐Ÿšถ It got my goal of doing something new and different at camp and the change was special even if the 12 or 13 mile walk caused by me missing Winhall River trail made it exhausting. I got to see some new and different trails,โ›ฐ the other side of Stratton Pond and even the summit of Stratton was enjoyable as it’s the first time I’ve hiked it in six years. Been kind of achy and sore all day today, but I’m sure in a few day I’ll be feeling better or I should go to the doctor prior to June 1st when the Health Insurance deductibles go up. ๐Ÿ˜ท We need universal healthcare, ain’t that obvious.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. North wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1994.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ˜ with 27% illuminated. The moon will rise at 2:44 am. The New Moon is on Sunday night with scattered showers. The Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:23 am with the first light at 4:49 am, which is 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain likely before 11am, then periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 4pm, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 58 degrees at 12pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 4pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.โ„

Tomorrow I should pick up my dry cleaning, ๐Ÿ‘• and maybe I should think about trying to get up to LL Bean to see if they will once again exchange my broken hammock. Well, if I paid a premium for the hammock, well with my card rewards, and they have a wonderful lifetime guarantee, they should replace it, because I don’t think I did anything to kill it besides flopping in it after being tired hiking. If they don’t replace it for free (again — the carbinaner snapped on the first one I got), I’ll get another brand, because I really want to do more hammock camping. I also want get the battery box and maybe the marine battery for my second battery I plan to install in the truck, in my cap, giving me extra storage for cloudy days up at camp. Then I should be able to be 100% solar for all my camp electrical needs.

Right now, next weekend looks cool but sunny. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6pm. Sunny and low humidity. No complaints there. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees. Things could definitely change by then.

I plan to stay in town next weekend, although things could change my mind.๐Ÿค” For example, if it looked like it was going to exceptionally hot out, I might consider going up to the Potholers, but not necessarily. Instead, I have a lot of projects I’d like to work on at home, including wiring up and mounting the second accessory battery in the cap of my truck.๐Ÿ”‹ I don’t imagine that project will take more then about an hour, but who knows. I might also have some work stuff I have to do next weekend.

But maybe the following weekend I’ll get out of town — I’m hoping by then that Jessup River Road will be open, then I might camp on Hardwood Hill then hike back on Saturday on one of the trails into the West Canada Lake Wilderness back to Pillsbury Lake from Sled Harbor and then on Sunday paddle around Speculator. ๐Ÿ• If I camp up there, I’ll have good cellphone service for any work matters that come up. Plus I love the views from the campsite — assuming the road is open for the spring, and that campsite is not taken.

In four weeks on June 24 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 14 minutes and 33 seconds later then tonight. Latest sunset of the year or pretty darn close to it. Almost all of the time — except for 2 minutes — we gain over the next few weeks will be in the evening, as earth wobble brings the transit of the sun closer to 1 PM. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 76 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1943.

Amazing to think in four weeks, we will be well into summer, but that’s what happens when Memorial Day Weekend comes to a close. Maybe that weekend I’ll be in Schoharie County, and can camp at Burnt Rossman after spending all day at the Mine Kill State Park pool.๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ

Looking ahead, Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 weeks, July ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ is in 5 weeks, Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚ is in 7 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 11 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 14 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 19 weeks.

Another Collapsing Adirondac Village Building

May 12, 2019 Night

Good evening! Yup, still raining and 43 degrees โ˜” in Delmar. Talk about a cold wet ending to the weekend.

But it was a nice weekend especially on Saturday up at Hildervandt Vly and the wilderness back country of the Southern Adirondacks. I’m thinking of doing more day hikes like that and some overnights when it warms up a bit more and the black fly season is done. A nice starry night in the wilderness in the hammock would be wonderful. โ›บ

While it was interesting driving through Tribes Hill and Fort Hunter, the bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ between the two is pretty narrow when two pickup trucks have to pass on it. Then I managed to make the wrong turn in Schenectady County and ended up in Mariaville and ended up taking the Thruway back home. At least traffic was light and the more rural parts of Schenectady County is remarkably scenic.

Sunday dinner at the folks house, Mother’s Day was meatballs riggis which was pretty good. ๐Ÿฒ Always a fun ending to the weekend.

Tonight will have patchy drizzle with a slight chance of showers after 2am. When it’s not raining look for clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 40 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 24th. Light northeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 2005.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 73% illuminated. The moon will set at 3:03 am. The Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• is on Friday night with a chance of showers. The sun will rise at 5:35 am with the first light at 5:03 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 9 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy drizzle with a chance of showers before 11am, then rain likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 55 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 9th. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2004. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.โ„

I was a bit annoyed with the amount of litter ๐Ÿšฎ I saw in the woods over the weekend. You usually don’t see as much in more remote country as I saw up at the campsites at Stewart Landing and Rockwood Lake. Hiking along NY 8 was pretty bad too. I didn’t pick up everything I saw in Rockwood State Forest but I did pick up the multiple six pack rings that were along the road. I get it – not really the consumers fault but a society awash in oil and the byproducts of it – plastic but still how hard would have it been to at least burn it completely or pack it out?

The long range doesn’t look that great for next weekend but the Lupine Festival might be fun. ๐Ÿ˜ž Next Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 51 at 1pm. Next Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees. At least by then the temperature will return close to normal.

In four weeks on June 9 the sun will be setting at 8:32 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 24 minutes and 15 seconds later then tonight. Almost the latest sunset of the year only gain about five minutes on that. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 80 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1933.

Looking ahead, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 5 weeks, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 9 weeks (skinny dipping?), Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 16 weeks, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 19 weeks and Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 22 weeks.

East Kill Valley

January 22, 2018 Evening

Good evening! Light rainโ˜” and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. It’s my final Monday evening commute as somebody who is 34. Feeling better this evening but still a bit achy and tired. Maybe it’s Monday sickness. I fell on ice while taking down camp on Sunday, I’m hoping I’m just recovering from the fall and I’m not getting sick again.

I got out of work at 5:30 and are taking home the bus, listening to Simon and Garfunkel, as the evening commute grinds along. It’s raining, a light rain, but not that hard on the window panes looking out the window at the streetscape. 💧

Tonight will rain, mainly after 4am. Areas of fog after 7pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low of 35 degrees at 6pm. โ˜”21 degrees above normal. East wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon with 32% illuminated with the moon setting at 10:35 pm. The moon will rise tomorrow at 10:48 am. The First Quarter Moon will be tomorrow with partly cloudy skies. The Wolf Moon is on Tuesday, January 30th.🌕 The sun will rise at 7:17 am with the first light at 6:47 am, which is 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 14 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain before noon, then showers,โ˜”💧โ˜” mainly after noon. The rain could be heavy at times. High of 50 degrees at 2pm. 19 degrees above normal. South wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mist in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1906. 10.6 inches of snow fell back in 1963.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. 🌞Sunday, rain and snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. โ˜Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees.

Saturday is the Save the Pine Bush hike which I am leading. Lynne Jackson was supposed to lead it but she is sick. So I’ll be the leader. Toying about tent or truck cap camping in Schoharie County next weekend as the snow will be gone and it will be mild and sunny next weekend but I don’t know. I kind of want to stay home and work on my electronics projects.

I am really interested to see if I can build decent looking acrylic boxes for my LED matrix sign because if I can it will be the basis for many future projects. I’ll use the Arduino, a date module the LED Matrix plus a few colors LEDs to make a beautiful display with all kinds of timers and countdowns. I’m holding off buying future components until I figure out how to build the clear or colored acrylic boxes to hold them.

Next week on Monday I’ll be 35. 🎂Really not a big deal but only 20 more until I turn 55. If I stay with the state that long, I may retire then. I’m not convinced a late retirement is worth the extra money. I’m trying to save whatever I can afford for retirement. It’s tough. 💰But who knows, that’s a long time away. Although honestly after app these years, time goes by quickly. When you do basically the same thing day after day, it’s all starts to become a blur.

At some point the future became the present. It’s remarkable how fast the seasons come and go, 🌆and I could definitely use the warm and long days of summer. Camping this past weekend at Cole Hill State Forest was niceโ›บ but nothing like those wonderful summer nights to come. I did love listening to the howls of the coyotes, the bellowing of the cows, 🐄and barred owl. But I still prefer those long summer nights. I like truck cap camping with the lights and being able to stay up late and not feel cold. Those days will be here before you know it. Even four weeks out from tonight the weather will have started to moderate, especially with climate change making winters โ„less harsh than they used to be. I really want summer to be back so that I can go truck cap camping along Piseco Powley Road.

Discovered after washing that another of my Sears shirts was damaged by bleach.😯 I don’t know where the bleach is coming from, maybe it’s actually the rags with floor cleaner or bleach for the counters although I usually try to rinse them before washing. Unfortunately Sears locally is no more, I’ll have to research what I can get online or at JC Penny. I do really like those Sears shirt. 👕Also my dress shoes are getting beat up from the salt and some of the facing material has pealed off. The soles are worn, making them slippery on ice and water. I was thinking of replacing them but first I think I will buy some shoe polish to see if I can stretch a few more months out of them.👞 I hate to waste them, and money is always a problem. While I donate my worn clothing and shoes to the local recycling bin, you have to wonder how much is actually recycled. โ™ป

When I get home this evening, I’m going to reheat some food in the freezer🍛 then start to play with with the date boards that were delivered last week.:D I don’t know if I will build a clock display tonightโฐ📙 but I may very well get the time set up on one and play with the various library features.

In four weeks on February 19 the sun will be setting at 5:33 pm,🕤 which is 36 minutes and 29 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 52 and 31 degrees.โ˜€ Typically, you have temperatures between 36 and 18 degrees. The record high of 66 degrees was set back in 1981.

Looking ahead, My 35th Birthday is in 1 week, Presidents Day is in 4 weeks, Memorial Day is in 18 weeks, Labor Day is in 32 weeks and Columbus Day is in 37 weeks.

🍻Only 122 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🍣

December 17, 2017 9 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday is Christmas Eve. Mostly sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Looks like a beautiful morning, sitting inside looking through the window as I sip a cup of coffee but it sure is cold. I guess without the wind and with the sun, it’s not that cold.

Today will have increasing clouds, with a high of 27 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 5 mph. I guess that’s reasonable for the second half of December. A year ago, we had light snow and mist in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1984. 11.1 inches of snow fell back in 1970.

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 22 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 25 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 16 seconds over yesterday. By next week, the sun will be setting four minutes later. Summer is coming st some point.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low of 20 degrees at 7pm. Typical for tonight. Maximum wind chill around 21 at 6pm; Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2016, we had light freezing drizzle in the evening, which became light rain and mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1919.

A bit of a cold Sunday on tap. I got to head to the store later today and I want to remove and update some code to the blog that I’ve been working on.

I might also go for a hike somewhere but I don’t want to go too far this weekend if I’m thinking of heading out of town next week. Maybe a walk along the rail trail? I could hike that section out to Voorheesville through Font Grove, although that sounds flat and boring. I could also do the Normans Kill Gorge, but I’ve done that a lot lately. I don’t know, this morning I’m feeling lazy after staying up late last night after smelling that delicious hazelnut coffee and deciding I need a cup. I’ve gotten back into flavored coffee again. But I got a lot of new code written for better Facebook integration with the blog.

Yesterday’s Save the Pine Bush hike was fun, not too cold but a little more sun would be nice. The Pine Bush isn’t my favorite place to hike but it is good that it remains somewhat wild even if sprawl runs through it. The Pine Bush exhibits such natural beauty and the ugliness of suburban life that abbuts it. Motoring is nice but it’s so noisy. While the displays made out of polyvinyl chloride and paintedย  aluminum are tacky its still nice to have such a nice place close to home. Too bad they bus service is so piss poor that only the adventurous can get to the Pine Bush without a car but I guess that helps limit use and abuse of the land.

Looking forward to going up north next weekend to the real wilderness, assuming that the weather isn’t too cold and I can dig myself out a parking space and a campsite. Alternatively, I could backcountry camp at Cole Hill or Rensselaervile State Forest.

I do need to get some data so I can make up some more graphs and maps. Maybe when I go down to the library to upload and test the other code.

Been studying soldering techniques for YouTube more, and I’m going to try to work with the silver solder some more today, as the leaded 60/40 solder got delayed in the mail. It only was coming from New Jersey but it got delayed in the mail. Leaded solder is actually safer from a fumes perspective then silver solder as it melts quicker so your breathing in less of the toxic flux fumes.

Still chewing over going grocery shopping at Shoprite and using Walmart onlineย  to order other supplies and dry goods. Shoprite has good prices for food as does Walmart online for supplies. I like the idea two day free delivery, although I worry about excess non recyclable packaging. I think about waste a lot because I am anti-landfill and anti-municipal incinerator and plus I haul my own trash bags to the transfer station at $2 a bag.ย  At least the plastic grocery bags can taken back to the store for recycling.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Christmas Eve when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 42 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015. I remember that rainy day at the bus stop after work. For Christmas in 2015, I went to Glimmerglass State Park and camped in Brookfield. That was a very nice way to spend Christmas but this year there will be a fair amount of snow in both of those places.

June 16, 2017 9 AM Update

Good morning! It is about 61 degrees under cloudy skies with a few sprinkles as I walked down to the Park and Ride this morning. More rain expected later, I don’t expect it to get much about 69 degrees today. I think I just beat the rain walking down to the express bus. I’m sure it will be wetter soon, based on the radar. I did bring my rain coat for later. Much hotter come Saturday, although I’m not expecting much of a washout for the weekend.

The sun will set at 8:35 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 21 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 65 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 17 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6pm. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2016, it got down to 56 degrees with mostly sunny skies. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1954.

Got home and watched the PBS Newshour Live last night.ย It was actually a much more informative coverage tonight, rather then just gore and sex appeal. Maybe they didn’t obligated to cover flashy stories tonight, and got more into the meat of the serious policy discussions going on, and our president’s continuing ethical problems.

The rain stopped and I walked down to the library.ย Started making up some maps but didn’t get real far on that. Maybe more tonight. Ended up watching a video on one of the farming channels that I follow on Youtube. It’s just quite interesting all of the things and technologies that farmers nowadays use to produce food and fiber.

Then I got watching videos on off-grid cabins and mini-houses. In part because I’ve gotten into 12 volt wiring, and in part because I hate how overly complicated and energy wasteful modern housing, I’m just fascinated by the technology. I would rather own more land and much less house, and be able to manage my energy generation and consumption myself, along with water and waste disposal. I’m not somebody who loses much sleep about a piece of plastic wrapper tossed into a fire, especially compared to the multi-national owned landfills that are corporate alternative. Fresh eggs are good too.

Sat out back for a whileย playing on my phone and doing some reading. My truck accessory battery has kept a good charge all week, despite using the fan quite a bit and the truck cap lights. LED lighting technology is quite energy efficient, and the fan doesn’t use that much power. By the low voltage disconnect protecting against battery abuse, I am also allowing the battery to charge quicker and not become damaged. The next time I go driving somewhere, the charge in the accessory battery will be fully restored.

On this day in 1911, IBM founded as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in Endicott, New York. Today it’s continuing to create jobs in the form of environmental remediation for all the hazardous solvents that leaked out of the chip manufacturing plants in Endicott, poisoning many families drinking water in the region. Technology is the gift that keeps giving in the form of toxic byproducts. God only knows how much toxic chemicals are leaking out at the SUNY NanoTech laboratories in the Albany Pine Bush, but we can guess even the smartest scientists only have a hint of what nasties they are releasing into the air and water.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until National Nude Day when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2016, we had thunderstorm, rain, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 87 and 73 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995. Skinny dipping in mid-summer is always fun in the creek. Heck, even this weekend might be warm enough to spend in a creek after dark.

Still studying getting a campstove reflector oven.ย I have found that Coleman Camp Oven that I was looking at on Amazon for $32 with two day shipping. Ebay has a mix of new and used/old ones — I would consider getting an older model, as the steel probably is a bit higher quality — but it seems like they are actually more expensive when you consider shipping. I might end up buying new. The reviews seem pretty good, although they do suggest putting some kind of pizza stone or thermal mass under what your baking for better heat dispersion, and to use a stand-alone oven thermometer over the built in one. Maybe I can get that at Wally World. As much as I like my Dutch Oven, it’s such a pain to get it the right temperature, especially with a wood fire, and it’s heavy and bulky to carry around to camp. The propane stove in contrast, you just push the pilot light button, set the heat and it works. It won’t be automatic temperature control, like a real oven, but should work decently for corn bread, fresh muffins, and cookies.

Saturday I am going to get my hair cut then go to the Gas Up.ย My hair is so long and shaggy, it needs to be cut.ย It’s going to be a hot day, but not too stormy. I could set my tent up in the woods and spend the night out camping Saturday night, but at this point I’m leaning against it, as I don’t want to have to set up a tent and load all the gear. But then again, I won’t be far from Cotton Hill and Dutch Hollow State Forests, so I could change my mind. I still haven’t put my camping gear away from last weekend. I also want to permanently wire the color changing lights in my truck cap to a switch, rather the cigarette lighter port it’s currently in, for ease of switching on and off. Should be a good weekend.

It was a pretty smooth commute in, although it’s starting to rain now. Well, I’m almost to work. Have a great day!

May 12, 2017 9 AM Update

55 degrees with partly sunny skies with another ten degrees to go before we max out today. Making good time downtown on the express bus but it’s chilly with the air conditioning blasting. TGIF. I’m just glad that summer is coming even if this weekend will be yet another rainy weekend.

The sun will set at 8:08 pm with dusk around 8:40 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 59 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 9 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2016, it got down to 52 degrees with rain and fog and patches of fog and mist and cloudy skies. The record low of 30 occurred back in 2005.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Memorial Day Weekend when the sun will be setting at 8:22 pm with dusk at 8:55 pm. On that day in 2016, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 88 and 58 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 72 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 2010.

It was pretty nice evening down at the park then back home, watching the moon rise during my evening walk. With the halo of the clouds, if almost looked like a flower. Saw a bat flying around scooping up bugs. White Nose has wiped out a lot of cave dwelling bats but it seems like in Delmar you still see them around, probably surviving under the eves of houses. Bats are good, they eat a lot of bugs.

Sat our back until around ten, watching the PBS Newshour on the tailgate of my truck. Got a bit chilly after a while but then again it’s still only mid May. A lot of road noise though as it seems everybody is out and about in the nice weather.

Continued to look at vests and I found a place that has free shipping and a good price but I’m concerned it will be delivered while I’m downstate. I’ll have to think about what I will do, I might have it shipped to a friend’s apartment. Or I might hold off now. I always like to think about purchases before I buy them. My old one is really falling apart, that’s why I decided to skip it this morning.

Two quick weeks from now I will be finishing packing my truck and heading to work then out to Vermont. I don’t have a Vermont fishing license but there is plenty of other things to do during my three day weekend. It’s not a big trip so if the weather goes bad, I can always head home. I don’t mind a thunderstorm but I don’t want a weekend of heavy rain while camping.

Been starting to research heavier rear wheel to put on my bike. I’ve always liked riding from place to place and my bike is nice but I got to have something that doesn’t keep breaking spokes, leaving me broken down along the road. I am thinking of possibly riding through some of the Pine Creek Rail Trail Gorge on my summer vacation. With nearly 80 miles of bike trail, there is a lot to see. Nearly half of the trail is in Wilderness, all of it is quite rural, flat and in the deep Pine Creek Gorge.

That said, like years past I will spend the bulk of my summer in the Finger Lakes National Forest and spend my days swimming and I hiking in the cold gorges of the Finger Lakes. It’s just a fun and relaxing way to spend a summer. I have the Empire Passport again this summer, so I have unlimited park visitation, and then I can camp along old Chicken Coop Road, have a nice fire, cook some burgers on charcoal while I listen to the soft mooing of the cows across the way in the pasture.

I am feeling a bit achy this morning. Not sure why. I’ve felt like I’ve had a upset stomach for most of the week but I’m thinking it may be all the hot sauce. I really need to use it in moderation, maybe in a bottle that pours slower. And maybe get to bed earlier, so I get sufficient sleep. Often when I’m tired, I get achy and don’t feel great. With the nice evenings though, I’ve been sitting out back until 11 PM, which is much too late, especially with the sun coming up early and waking me before 6 AM.

Speaking of speed, they’ve put once of those temporary your speed signs on my road, and it’s amazing how fast people are blowing past it. People are often going 40-45 miles per hour in 30, around a fairly tight curve past pedestrians. In the era of cruise control and electronic throttles and eight speed transmissions this seems very non sensible. You reach the speed limit limit and hit a button on your steering wheel. How difficult can it be?
